Presentation Notes
1)i/nat programme run by the FEE and is know internationally as Eco-Schools. 50 countries involved – China ( Imill primary schools) most of Europe, USA, Africa, SA, and Asia. It is based on the EMS that biz would use. 32k schools, 6m students, 400k teachers, 4000LAs. Over 10,000 flags internationally! Can operate in any culture/educational/political system 2/3) Holistic/ethos – aims to make env awareness and action an intrinsic part of the life and ethos of a school – this should include students, teachers, non-teaching staff, parents, LA, media and local biz. GS endeavours to extend learning beyond the classroom and develop responsible attitudes and commitment, both at home an in the wider community. What sets it apart from other EE programmes? – requires whole school action Becomes normalised – without thinking 4) Award scheme- award comes in form of Green-Flag – Has anyone seen a blue flag? What are 3 things you think off? Well GF now a well respected and well recognised eco-label and shows: EE/Em/Involving the wider community/internationally recognised Name 3 things that come to mind when you see a BF (EE and info/Water quality/ Env Mgmt/clean beach/ appropriate facilities/safety Name 3 things for GF – env mgmt, ee, involving the wider community, internationally recognised 5) LT Prog- not a project – a project has a beginning– mid - end to ensure process is effective continual reduction of the school’s env impacts has to be renewed every 2 years- thematic, we will discuss this more later Can have projects within programmes Takes 2 years to get up and running Have to renew it – flags are milestones Age profile distinction jnr primary school – 6 weeks snr primary school – 6 months sec schools – 2 years (l/a feeder schools) 6) Whole school action – la feeder schools

Green- Schools Themes

1:Litter and Waste

2: Energy

6: Global Citizenship

5: Biodiversity 4: Travel

3: Water

Presenter
Presentation Notes
GS covers a number of themes, beginning with litter and waste minimisation and followed by other themes such as en, w, tr, biodiversity & global citizenship In order to implement the GS prog most effectively, the GS office encourages schools to resist taking on all the themes at the same time. Schools begin by examining the lnw theme and will receive materials – (hbook!) providing info on how to best implement the GS prog for lnw, as well as help for the LA. Building blocks All themes are interlinking – you are not losing out! Not just an EE prog – good for morale! Pilot themes. Mention and show handbooks! If you have started incorporating other themes – record for when you are applying for that particular flag Incorporate to your ability

Global Citizenship

• Long Term schools • Maintenance programme • Reduced workload • Draw on existing expertise • Link to curriculum as much as possible

1. Global Citizenship - Litter & Waste 2. Global Citizenship - Energy

Presenter
Presentation Notes
The Global Citizenship has been developed to keep schools that have been in the programme for ten years or more engaged in the Green-Schools programme, while hopefully at the same time reducing the workload. The main thing we ask of you is to revisit your previous themes while adding a global dimension to same. Many children in the school would not have covered previous topics so it will be a nice refresher for everyone in the school and not too much extra work as most actions should still be working quite well. The theme is easy to incorporate into the curriculum as each and every class or year deals with citizenship in one form or another. We strongly suggest that you try and work as much as possible with other teachers in the school and tailor your programme to what is happening in the school already.

WASTE AND POVERTY

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Overview of Waste Generation in less developed countries: Urbanisation is increasing at a high rate in developing countries. At the moment 1 billion people worldwide live in slums associated with urbanisation. Population increases pressures on urban infrastructures. Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) management very often one of the last issues being looked at (wastewater treatment and air pollution are mostly dealt with first) In many cities in Africa and India less than half the MSW generated is collected. Worldwide over two thirds of human waste released into the environment with little or no treatment. Most common disposal method in developing countries is open dump. Not just a problem in cities, rural areas, due to dispersion of dwellings very often lack any form of waste collection. But still high waste productions; Mining and agriculture the most obvious generating sectors. Estimated 26kg of waste per 1 kg of food produced – waste dumped on vacant lands, water and/or burned. Mining waste very often also dumped on vacant lands, destroying valuable habitats and may pollute waters also. A frequent sight on these open dumps near urban areas are locals collecting materials for recycling. These activities are now viewed as part of the solution to waste problems in the developing world. People are extremely resourceful and we might even have something to learn from them! The pictures here were taken in South Africa..a wealthy African country with still an immense high proportion of people living in poverty. In this township MSW is collected but not frequently enough resulting in litter problems and consequently vermin that may be associated with this. But as you can see, waste is being used to create housing for the poorest in the township societies..of course not an ideal scenario but as I said before we have a lot to learn here in the so called developed world

ELECTRONIC WASTE

Page 15: Global Citizenship - Green-Schools · 2016. 9. 8. · Global Citizenship - Litter & Waste 2. The Global Citizenship has been developed to keep schools that have been in the programme

ELECTRONIC WASTE

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Electronic waste is classed as hazardous waste and it accounts for >70% of all toxic waste found in landfill sites. Electronic waste contains valuable metals like eg aluminium and copper, but it also contains hazardous materials such as lead, mercury and cadmium. These metals can contaminate our waters even in small amounts if placed in landfill sites. Producer responsibility...Do you know where your electronic waste ends up? Do you really need to buy new electronics? Think twice before you buy! Major electronics firms should stop using hazardous chemicals to make their products safer and easier to recycle. All companies must take full responsibility for their products and take back their old products back for re-use, safe recycling or disposal. Pressuring major electronic makers to reduce the toxicity and amount of e-waste being dumped every year. You can do your part by supporting companies that make are making an effort to clean up their act by checking Greenpeace’s Guide to Greener Electronics www.greenpeace.org/eastasia/news/stories/toxics/2014/ Think twice before buying whether you really need a new device and return your old equipment to the manufacturer if possible. As with a lot of our other waste, electrical and electronic equipment should not be considered waste but looked upon as a very valuable resource (that is part of the reason why most of our e-waste ends up in the developing world, these people are extremely resourceful and thus do a lot of this recycling for us, be it illegally or legally!). Aluminium recovered from WEEE uses 95% less energy than if we make aluminium from raw ore, it also uses 97% less water when recycled. Better still, re use of electronic waste! All data wiped off and send to local, reputable, charities It is very important we know what happens to our waste and we have the responsibility to ensure it is not dumped in lesser developed countries who might have less stringent policies, guidelines, and laws when it comes to environmental problems! Be aware of “the Man with a Van”! If it sounds too cheap to be true it probably is!
Page 16: Global Citizenship - Green-Schools · 2016. 9. 8. · Global Citizenship - Litter & Waste 2. The Global Citizenship has been developed to keep schools that have been in the programme
Presenter
Presentation Notes
Responsible waste disposal, in this case e-waste disposal, will aid people in developing countries by ensuring they don’t, unwittingly, pollute their valuable, and already hard to come by, water resources.
Page 17: Global Citizenship - Green-Schools · 2016. 9. 8. · Global Citizenship - Litter & Waste 2. The Global Citizenship has been developed to keep schools that have been in the programme
Presenter
Presentation Notes
Us taking a responsible approach to our own waste management and pressurising companies to do the same and reduce toxicity in their products will aid in ensuring people in developing countries can improve and maintain their sustainable farming practices and lives.

ENERGY AND POVERTY

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Energy has been recognised as a basic human right. Unfortunately many people across the globe still lack access to energy/electricity. In order to alleviate this problem The United Nations Secretary-General recently launched a pioneering new initiative, “Sustainable Energy for All,” to mobilize urgent global action. The Initiative brings all sectors of society to the table: business, governments, investors, community groups and academia. This initiative encompasses three inter-linked objectives:   •         Ensure universal access to modern energy services. •         Double the rate of improvement in energy efficiency. •         Double the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix.   The role we as citizens can play here is to keep pushing our policy makers to incorporate renewable energy in the production of goods and services for us all. We can also, more importantly reduce our own individual energy consumption to aid in the alleviation of a much greater problem..Climate Change

Climate Change

http://www.carbonmap.org/

Presenter
Presentation Notes
As you can see from the carbon map, developed countries, like ourselves are most responsible for carbon emmissions while the less developed countries are most at risk. The cartoon may indicate reasons why our politicians are not too inclined to make too many changes, so it is up to us.

Page 22: Global Citizenship - Green-Schools · 2016. 9. 8. · Global Citizenship - Litter & Waste 2. The Global Citizenship has been developed to keep schools that have been in the programme

Step 1: Committee Structure

• Students (N.B) • Coordinator • Teaching Staff • Non-Teaching Staff • Principal • Board of Management • Parents • Community Members • Added extra: you will be

encouraged to include as many different nationalities as possible in your committees, from within the school and the wider community

Top Tip: Why not hold an election campaign to select your committee members for the citizenship theme!

Presenter
Presentation Notes
The committee should be as student-led as possible and representative of the whole school Have regular meetings Record minutes!! – minutes are nb to the success of your programme, we will also ask or a copy of minutes when you apply for the flag. Election of Committee: Hold an election, volunteer students, formal application, competition... Communicate issues and decisions made at meetings to school You will probably need to meet more regularly at the beginning Being on committee allows students develop election skills- public speaking Look at our case studies In terms of the citizenship theme, it might be a good idea to encourage as many different nationalities as possible to become involved. This will enhance the committee and the work on the citizenship theme. Top Tip: Why not hold an election campaign to select your committee members for the citizenship theme!
Page 23: Global Citizenship - Green-Schools · 2016. 9. 8. · Global Citizenship - Litter & Waste 2. The Global Citizenship has been developed to keep schools that have been in the programme

Step 2: Global Citizenship - Litter & Waste Review

Essential Actions : 1. Litter & Waste audit 2. Conduct the global awareness survey 3. Research Nationalities in the school

Presenter
Presentation Notes
the environmental review tells you “where we are now” There are 2 main ways of assessing bins 1) tip bin over and sort waste – wear gloves! 2) Put a checklist above bins Good, bad, ugly QQWF – quantify, qualify, where from Use same units
Page 24: Global Citizenship - Green-Schools · 2016. 9. 8. · Global Citizenship - Litter & Waste 2. The Global Citizenship has been developed to keep schools that have been in the programme

Action 1: Litter & Waste Review

• The same as original review • We ask you to identify

areas for improvement – Food waste disposal – Electronic waste disposal – Lunch box waste – Reduce, reuse – Increase recycling

Page 25: Global Citizenship - Green-Schools · 2016. 9. 8. · Global Citizenship - Litter & Waste 2. The Global Citizenship has been developed to keep schools that have been in the programme

Action 1: Energy Review

• The same as original review • We ask you to identify areas for improvement

– Reduce Energy consumption further if possible

– Food and energy – eat low carbon? – Energy Star label – energy efficiency – Carbon Calculator – how much carbon

does your school emit? – Investigate Climate Change – Investigate where your energy comes from

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Again, most important to find out where you are before you a=start making an improvemnet so that it can be measured. Your energy review may be carried out in the same way as your original review. Either by looking at you energy bills or by reading your energy meters. A comprehensive guide on how to read your meters may be found on our website. However we would strongly suggest that you read your meter for a period of two days at least, once in the morning, once in the afternoon at home time and again the following morning. This will give you a good idea about how much energy is used (wasted?) at night and will give you a good guide as to how much energy you could possibly save.
Page 27: Global Citizenship - Green-Schools · 2016. 9. 8. · Global Citizenship - Litter & Waste 2. The Global Citizenship has been developed to keep schools that have been in the programme

Action 2:Global Awareness Survey

• Hands-up survey – 14 questions with representative sample of school only (4th, 5th and 6th class in primary or 15% of school population in secondary)

• Gauge existing awareness levels of different issues related to Global Citizenship.

• Pick one question/topic where the students showed lack of awareness and focus on improving

• Re-do survey at the end of the school year as part of the monitoring and evaluation step

• Repeated in second year work and inputted into the renewal application form.
