Global citizenship at Ustinov College is about cultivating diversity, through dialogue and debate across different cultures and disciplines. Speaking as part of the college management team, we genuinely value our scholars’ individual ideas, skills, and experiences, and the Global Citizenship Programme is designed to be a mutually rewarding partnership. The programme offers specific project and leadership roles, as well the opportunity to develop and lead new initiatives—from seminar series, workshops, film clips or publications, to outreach projects, music events, and art exhibitions. It allows you to pursue your own interests and develop leadership and interpersonal skills—and subsidise your living costs during studies! The programme offers scholarships in the form of accommodation awards to postgraduate students interested in contributing to Ustinov College life.

Ustinov Scholars support the college management team in the coordination and delivery of academ-ic, social, and cultural projects: from seminars and discussion groups, to research forums, conferences, media and communications. Bring your ideas, en-ergy, and expertise, and in the process develop new skills and networks for your future career.

My time as a Global Citizenship scholar and college project leader is difficult to capture in just a few words, primarily because the diversity that defines all the college projects is something that must be experienced as it is an integral part of college life at Ustinov. The number of events taking place throughout the year is both impressive and wide-ranging, so whether you’re interested in politics of the Middle East, Chinese cooking, climate change and environmental issues, or volunteering in the local community, there is bound to an event you can attend or an activity to get involved in.

Durham is a research intensive university. The Global Citizenship Programme offers you unique opportunities to develop both professionally and academically and is designed to complement your studies.

As a Ustinov Scholar, you formulate themes for interdisciplinary seminars and conferences, develop networks with academics, engage in public speaking

and learn to communicate research to a wider audience. As a team member or project leader, you can develop an enviable set of interpersonal skills such as team working, leadership, mentoring, problem-solving, and communication, all useful for careers in academic or non-academic fields. Whichever projects you are involved in, you gain invaluable event management experience.

Since I joined the Ustinov Intercultural Forum as a GCP scholar, I have found myself more enthusiastic and motivated about my personal, educational, and career development. My participation has improved my knowledge of interesting areas of research, communication skills, networking, team-working, and attitude towards challenges, and I find myself continuously developing and advancing to new levels.

The Ustinov Seminar has developed into the signature seminar series and interdisciplinary forum for postgraduate students across the university who meet to share their research and friendship.

Seminars generally take place on a Saturday morning three or four times a term. The Ustinov Seminar includes three or four 20-minute presentations from

a range of disciplines, typically grouped around a common theme to prompt discussion, and ends with a buffet lunch. Students come along to rehearse a potential conference paper, practise presentation skills in a relaxed and friendly environment, or simply enjoy introducing their research and ideas to students from various disciplines.

What I found particularly interesting and enriching was chairing events, as I have never moderated a similar format with speakers from different backgrounds before. It was interesting to proactively react to the dynamics, which emerged – especially in Q&A sessions – among the multidisciplinary audience.

The Communication TeamAs a member of the College, this is an opportunity to provide your perspective and insight to communicate to people just like yourself, and build your CV in the process. Most team members are section editors of the highly regarded college magazine, The Ustinovian, which reports on college life and news for current students, staff, alumni, and friends of the College, but there is also opportunity in graphic design (from posters to logos) and social media.

The Media TeamThe Media Team offers a fantastic opportunity for students with experience in photography, filming, and editing to bring their skills and ideas to college life. Many of our talks and events are filmed and edited, to be made available to a wide audience through social media. This also enables alumni from across the world to keep in touch with the Ustinov community. You can find creative ways of using media production for the benefit of Ustinovians near and far: from participatory research projects and documentaries, to capturing college life for the College marketing team.

Global Citizenship Programme Project Coordinator This role coordinates the activities across all the different strands of the Global Citizenship Programme. You ensure that the activities planned fit within the college’s strategic aim, attend and lead committees, and liaise closely with the College management team. You monitor the performance of the different strands, keep track of budgets and project resources, and mentor the project leaders.

Global Citizenship Programme Communication CoordinatorWorking closely with the College management team, you are a key driver of the College’s communications, effectively developing and delivering the College’s communications and marketing strategy. Communications include both social and printed media, notably the college publication The Ustinovian and its associated blog. You also provide direction for a team of fellow student contributors, some of whom you help recruit.

One of the most affecting moments came as I was laying out the Epiphany issue of the magazine; I left the media office one evening, and stepped into the Ustinov Bar to meet the former editor, who was up from London for a visit. Working on The Ustinovian with Matthew the previous year had introduced me to Ustinov College in a unique way, but as we caught up over Durham Brewery ales (naturally), I realised that the magazine was now part of how he stayed in touch with the College and his friends here, almost as a ‘letter from home’.

As the GCP Project Coordinator I seek to ensure that all college projects are actively involved in promoting the goals of the Global Citizenship Programme. Defining aspects of my position are always being reachable, as I serve as point of reference and connection for over 20 scholars and the college management; and evaluating many competing options and making important decisions under tight time constraints.

Café Politique Ustinov College Café Politique is the premier politics discussion forum in Durham outside the School of Government and International Affairs (SGIA). Starting in 2007, Café Politique has provided a focus for debate and discussion on the topics of the day—from area studies, international relations and security, elections, global finance, to the politics of football. Use your interpersonal skills to network with academics, politicians and activists to find speakers, while building closer links with a number of academic departments.

Café Scientifique Ustinov Café Scientifique was set up to bring science and technology out of the lab and into the café. Participants don’t come just for a public lecture, but to take part in a public conversation. The typical format involves presentations around a particular theme, followed by a Q&A session and refreshments. Your brief to communicate scientific issues to a non-specialist audience puts you in contact with speakers from the University’s science labs and leading science communicators.

Being accepted onto the Café des Arts team gave me a new way to share my love of art, poetry, music and dance from different cultures with the whole Ustinov community.

Café des Arts Café des Arts provides a cultural space that challenges perceptions about the role of the arts in our culture, asserting that the arts are more than just relevant — they are vitally influential in our society. Your mission: bring in high-profile speakers, postgraduate students, and performers so members of the Ustinov community can find innovation and inspiration in art, culture, and literature.

Not only did I get the opportunity to meet fantastic people as part of the Café Politique team, but I met a significant number of politically minded individuals at our events. People ask how they could get involved with the Café Politique in the future (the Facebook page is a good start if you want to know).

We have run a number of successful events this year including ‘Killer Weather’ and ‘The Gender Divide in Science’, that have been well attended by students and academics from across the University. I have also honed important skills such as team-work, effective communication, and chairing events, but it isn’t all glamorous—I also roll up my sleeves to help set up the events and tidy away afterwards!

Ustinov Intercultural Forum (UIF) Ustinov’s college motto is Diversitate Valemus: ‘strength in diversity’—which is apt as students from more than 100 countries around the world live here, making us one of the most multicultural and multinational student communities in the UK. Through the UIF, you help prompt exploration and celebration of our many social, cultural, national, and religious differences. You might organise international dress and dance parties and calligraphy workshops, as well as a careers seminar for international applicants or a seminar series on faith and science in academia.

Ustinov Volunteering The Ustinov Volunteering project gets staff and students involved in the wider local community and bring awareness to the opportunities available within the volunteer sector. The project supports charities and foundations in and around Durham; activities range from creating mosaics with art therapists to landscaping bird habitats to performing for senior citizens. The team also provides a host of volunteers for all kinds of college events such as the Summer BBQ, family events, and college celebrations; and organises and runs various careers events.

Race, Crime, and Justice The Race, Crime, and Justice project offers a platform for the discussion of problematic aspects of race, crime, and justice, from both a UK and international perspective. You promote critical discourse on sensitive, but often marginalised themes, not only to raise awareness about lived experiences, but also connect theoretical debates in the field of race, crime, and justice to contemporary realities. You bring together international scholars, activists, and stakeholders for seminars, trips, visits and conferences. You also support the work of the Race Crime and Justice Regional Research Network, which undertakes independent and commissioned research, and analyses and comments on policy and practice issues in relation to the experience of ethnic minorities in the region of the criminal justice system.

Race, Crime, and Justice seminar on ‘Human Trafficking’

As team leader, I have organised events concerning complex aspects of the current globalised world, such as increasing discrimination against what is labelled different, as well as exploitation of weakness in the form of modern slavery and human trafficking. Nothing has been more valuable than engaging in debates to get to the root of such issues. My life as a postgraduate has enormously benefited from this continuous exchange of ideas and the opportunity to engage in debate with scholars from all around the UK.

Being a GCP scholar […] is a valuable experience as I get to do and learn things I wouldn’t have done and learned otherwise. For one of our projects we worked with a charity on an art project—a mosaic for a local school. Knowing that this mosaic will be on the wall of this school for a very long time makes me proud. It is also a way of saying thank you and giving back to the community for the wonderful time I’ve had in Durham and Ustinov College.

The Global Citizenship Programme & Scholarships are open to all current and prospective full time members of Ustinov College, from any subject or discipline.

The application process for the Global Citizenship Programme & Scholarships opens around 30 April and closes 30 June each year. Decisions are communicated in July.

Applications are accepted throughout the year for non-funded positions in the Global Citizenship Programme.

To take up a scholarship, you must have been accepted to a programme of postgraduate study at Durham University.
