Agriculture is currently on crossroad, needing utmost attention of science and technology along with policy and investment to ensure food and nutritional security. In this context, the GAP Report (2014) brought out by Global Harvest Initiative and Global Nutrition Report of IFPRI-2015, have clearly projected the challenges and promise expected by 2050. These reports also highlight the global revolution in agriculture and projects the need for Food and Nutritional Security, with specific emphasis on India. A mention about self sufficiency and revolution in horticulture has also been made highlighting the challenges and options. Required Investment, technological interventions and policy reorientation needed to continue and expand the story of successes in India have also been emphasized. Further, the reports have concluded that business as usual will not help in meeting the challenges, as population pressure on land and water will continue to increase, rapid urbanisation will take place and middle income people will play a major role. With increasing income and urbanisation, there will be a greater demand for quality food, to be produced in changing environment. Therefore, total factor productivity has to be increased by rationally conserving and utilising our natural resources.

Understandabily, there is an ever increasing global concern for meeting the food and nutritional security of ever growing population, necessitating concerted efforts to meet the food, nutrition and health as well as environmental security despite declining land and water resources, beside, the threat of climate change. How this challenge could be addressed is a question before us all? Will the technology-led agriculture succeed in producing more from less of land and water, while mitigating the climate change? Past experiences of producing more through various science-led revolutions is a testimony of our capability to address such challenges successfully. But the emerging scenario is more challenging than ever before. However, revolution in science and emergence of new technologies like biotechnology, information technology, nanotechnology etc. provide new hopes. Hence, we need to harness new technologies for future agricultural growth. This approach is referred to as climate smart agriculture or precision agriculture. As such, resilience in agriculture holds key for future successes.

Dynamics of this approach revolves around greater emphasis on new innovations needed to address the challenges. Hydroponics, aeroponics, hybrid technology, fertigation, conservation agriculture are emerging innovations to address many emerging issues leading towards industrial agriculture or horticulture. Hence, all these issues necessitate a global dialogue to analyze emerging options and find solutions to our priority problems.
