WASH Plus Team

WASHplus launched a comprehensive three-year project to address the underlying causes of inadequate water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) conditions in hard-to-reach areas of southwestern Bangladesh. In partnership with WaterAid Bangladesh (WAB) as the prime implementing agency and in collaboration with experience Bangladeshi NGOs, the project supports national WASH initiatives as well as WASH-related Millennium Development Goals through three specific objectives that can be broadly defined as: 1) increasing access to water and sanitation facilities and promoting consistent and correct WASH behaviors; 2) strengthening the effectiveness of local governance to sustainably support WASH services; and 3) strengthening the evidence-based programming guidance for coordinated WASH-nutrition interventions.

In rational with objective 1; WaterAid Bangladesh support PNGOs working in south western region to observer Global Hand Washing Day, 2014 through different promotional activities with the involvement of Local Government institutions, Upazila Administration, Schools, community people and other stakeholders to create awareness and to ensure hand washing practice. AVAS, SAP-BD, DAM and DORP are the partner’s at field to observe the day in colorful manner respectively in Patuakhali and Bhola district. For sub-district has been covered under these initiatives

WASH Result Team

WaterAid Bangladesh supports PNGOs to develop WASH situation in the unserved and underprivileged area where inadequate access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene promotion. WASH Result project of WaterAid is working in Shaghata and Sadullapur of Gaibandha, Raiganj of Sirajganj, Debiganj of Panchagarh and Baliadangi of Thakurgaon district. SKS Foundation is responsible for Shaghata and Sadullapur Upazila of Gaibandha, VERC is responsible for Raiganj of Sirajganj, ESDO is responsible for Baliadangi of Thakurgaon and Debiganj of Panchagarh Upazila to implement the WaSH activities under WASH Result Project. Above mentioned partner NGOs celebrated Global Hand Washing Day, 2014 through different promotional activities by the involvement of Local Government institutions, Upazila Administration, Schools, community people and other stakeholders to create awareness and to ensure hand washing practice.

Climate Change Programme Team

WaterAid Climate change program is working in different geographical area of Bangladesh focusing safe water, sanitation and hygiene in the context of climate change complexities. Climate change program partners – Rupantar, Shushilan, UST and SUS performed different types of activities through their working area to observe sanitation month and global hand washing day which are presented in following section.

A rally was organized coordinating with upazila administration, DPHE, and other organization where upazila chairmen, government officials, UDMC, WDMC, local leaders, teachers, other NGO were present and raised their voice on behalf of hand washing, hygiene latrine and so on.

Small Town Programme

Under the slogan “Clean hands save lives”, the driving theme for Global Hand washing Day is children and schools. Children acting as agents of change, taking the good practices of hygiene learned at school back into their homes and communities. The active participation and involvement of children, along with culturally sensitive community-based interventions aim at ensuring sustained behavioral change.National Sanitation Month is also observed in this month to emphasize the significance of sustainable sanitation for safe environment and healthy nation.The partner organizations of Small Town programme of WaterAid Bangladesh, jointly celebrated these two events with municipalities, Local Government institutions, Upazila Administration, educational institutes and communities to build attention and awareness and ensure hand washing practice in a wider aspect.

Akota Janashangathan (people’s platform) organized a hand washing demonstration session in Rakibnagar slum of ward no.: 09. 45 females and 30 children (under 5 years) were participated in the session. Sub-Assistant Engineer of local DPHE was also participated in the session. Five critical hand washing times was discussed & everybody practiced Hand washing system with soap & water.

� A discussion session was conducted to mark the importance of hand washing in Protimabonki Government Primary school. Altogether 111 students, 04 teachers, 02 SMC members were attended in the session along with Assistant engineer of Shakhipur Municipality.

Sustainable Environmental Health Initiative Project inPaikgacha Municipality, Paikgacha, Khulna

Hand washing demonstrations were conducted two different spots with the participation of 409 students. In Model Primary School, the Upazial Nirbahi Officer discussed about the importance of hand washing and demonstrated all right steps of hand washing among the students. In other spot, the respective staffs firstly demonstrated it and then the same practice done by other participants.

A rally was organized from Upazilla o�ce premises and covered the major road of the municipality. The rally was led by Upazila Nirbahi O�cer, Municipality Mayor and councilors. Rural WASH Programme

Global Hand Washing Day and Sanitation Month 2014 mobilize thousands of students, parents and local government leaders around the country to wash their hands with shop. 15 projects under Rural WASH programme organize massive mobilization campaign throughout the months to raise awareness on Safe Sanitation and hand washing with shop as a key preventive approach of communicable diseases.

WaterAid and its 12 Rural WASH partners joined hands with the government initiatives at 97 unions, 18 upazials in 13 working districts holding several colorful programmes jointly with district administration, local government institutions and communities.
