About MAGIC Project

• MAGIC: Middleware for collaborative Applications and

Global vIrtual Communities

• 2 year H2020 project co-funded by the EC, from May 2015

• Aim: Seeks to establish a set of agreements for

participating World Regions, aiming at consolidating and

completing the building blocks of middleware necessary for

the establishment of a marketplace of services and real-

time applications for international and inter-continental

research groups which facilitates mobility and the work of

global science communities.

Global Science Communities

• Groups of experts

(researchers and/or

academics) from

different parts of the

world with a

common interest,

working together on

activities, sharing

best practice,

knowledge and

experiences

Establishing the Communities

• Contacts requested through regional reps, who in turn

contacted NRENs

– WACREN Focal Points proved very useful

• Invitations sent directly to the contacts to join the GSCs

• Community spaces created on Virtual Collaboration

Platform, Colaboratorio: https://colaboratorio.redclara.net

• Champions and anchors identified

• Initial engagement events organised in February 2016

Lessons Learnt

• GSCs are a forum or platform where people with special

interests come together

– Removes isolation

• Low participation from the Arab World and Africa

– Dissemination?

– Interest?

– Connectivity?

– Tools?

• Not easy to attract in existing communities

• NRENs (and institutions?) need to catch up with services

– Connectivity

– Identity Providers/Federations

Page 18: Global Science Communitiesasrenorg.net/eage2016/sites/default/files/files/Tiwonge Msulira Banda.pdfAbout MAGIC Project • MAGIC: Middleware for collaborative Applications and Global

Closing the gap

• How can we close the gap between NRENs and End User

Communities (small or big/organised)?

• How can we bring more participation from the Arab World

and Africa?

• Participation is open
