Vol. xVi, No. 1 GloBAl VEDANA 5

[In the ollowing article a devotee, who preers to be anonymous, has written that, as a spiritual practice, just looking at a picture o Sri Ramakrishna can be spiritually bene-

cial. He also has commented that, according tohis knowledge, this kind o spiritual practice is generally not taught in the Ramakrishna  Movement.

In this context I would like to inorm the author as well as the readers o Global Ve-danta that the idea o looking at the picture o  a divine incarnation like Sri Ramakrishna,as a spiritual practice, is not at all against the tradition o the Ramakrishna Order. In act,it is very much a part o the tradition.

Sri Ramakrishna himsel once said, “Can’t

one meditate with eyes wide open?” (inBengali: Chkh cheyey k dhyān hy nā? ) In other words, according to him, it is not es-sential or every one to meditate on God only inside the heart. One could meditate on God outside the heart as well.

Photographing Sri Ramakrishna, the Divine Incarnation o this age, was anunprecedented event in the history o human-kind. No such pictures o the earlier Divine  Incarnations are available. Tis is the rst time that we are able to see the exact likeness

o a Divine Incarnation. Our Holy Mother, Sri Sarada Devi, used

to say that a person and his picture are one and the same. (She said in Bengali: Chhāyāā kāyā ack. ) She, who also is revered by thousands in India as well as abroad as a Divine Incarnation, used to vividly see the  physical presence o Sri Ramakrishna in his  ramed picture that she had in her room. One day, or some reason, the worship o Sri Ramakrishna was done by someone else. Tat aternoon, resting in her bed ater lunch, the

Holy Mother dreamt that Sri Ramakrishna was lying on the bare oor o her room. She immediately woke up and was alarmed todiscover that the worshipper had let the  owers touching Sri Ramakrishna’s picture, and ants rom the owers had crept on his body. She immediately removed the ants and the owers rom the picture. (Source: Te Bengali gaphy the Hy Mthe by Swami Gambhirananda.)

Once a gentleman named SurendranathRoy, who lived in the city o Barisal in

Eastern Bengal, became seriously ill. It was

contemplating sri ramakrishna’s pictureby a western devotee

suspected that he had contracted tuberculosis.Tinking that his death was imminent, he wrote to the Holy Mother expressing his  great yearning to see her at least once beore

he died. He requested her to come to Barisal, which was ar away rom Calcutta. As it was impossible or the Holy Mother to visit Barisal, she sent him one o her pictures along with a volume containing the yearly issues o  the Bengali religious journal Udbodhan. She asked that gentleman to look at her picture and read the journal. She also assured him o  his recovery rom the illness. Surendranath put her picture next to his bed and would look at it all the time until he got cured.(Source: Te Bengali gaphy the Hy

Mthe by Swami Gambhirananda.) Aside rom all this, it is most important  or the devotee s to remembe r that they should strictly ollow the instructions o their  guru, otherwise they will not be spiritually beneted.— Editor]

Te mountain sky is a goddess air,Such lovely silks she likes to wear.Come out O soul, and see!

Her eet adorned with green and blue,Or white reecting every hue, As lake and land adore.

At dawn she dons pink-edged chifon,Bright, then brighter till dark has hone. You miss it i you sleep.

Most days her cloth is innite azure. Night cloak is black with stars you can’t measure. Both bedazzle the soul.

Some days it’s brocade, the clouds being owers,

Forming a pattern o beautiul bowers, Arching east to west.

Sunset brings satin with broad bold lines,Shining with purples and ochres and wines,o take your breath away.

Winter dusk, velvet with an orange-gold sheenSheds light everywhere—above, below, between.Full Divinity displayed!

Perhaps the git O human lie is given,o increase love,Tough All our saying Lessens it,For it is ound in silence; A touch, a look, a hidden smile. So great,

It abides humbly in little things; One element or another,Te attraction o molecules,Te pin or the magnet,Or silent understanding, And seless giving. So great, It is gravity, holding everything together. It powers universes, It is the joy that keeps planets,

In love with the sun,Spinning in their paths, And the sot surrender Radiant in the eye,Unmeasured, unremembered

Sacrice,Or the owering o corals, And spores in the wind,Blowing about, yet intent On meeting. Listen:Tere it is in the gentle cooing o doves,Or the silent urges o the simplest lives,Hidden in the soil.Perhaps,Te git o human lie is given,o increase this boon,For greater, beyond all possibility

O crossing, Are the deserts o our sufering,Without love.

I we give talks, and we are ree o choose the topics we like best,Our limit comes where knowledge ends  And ights o ancy ully cease.

When mind is lled with nobler thoughts

With hymns and songs composed by saints,Te eld or choice gets broadened out, And thinker’s sense o reedom grows.

I this is true o sense-bound man,What need to speak o Cosmic Sel, Abode o wisdom, strength and bliss,Te Source o creatures, worlds and bliss.

I we exist as nite selves,Te Cosmic Sel as God exists; Attuned to Him, we get His Grace,His reedom, strength and boundless bliss!

I thinker can, by way o sport, ranscend, with joy, all names and orms,Te Supreme ruth where selves and God Uniquely merge must stay revealed!

Tough time and space may bring againTe world o change beore the sage,For blessing all, that ruth will rain Its glories through his thoughts and deeds!
