3Message from the President/CEO

During the year in review, FODEDE made a significant achievements toward the use of football to improve the lives of disadvantage youths. The endorsement and acceptant of FODEDE as network member of the streetfootballworld was a millstone in adding hope to Liberia youths from age 10-years old and younger make up 47 percent of the nation’s population and those 15 to 35-years old make up 28 percent of the population, meaning that 75 percent of the country population is youths who are unemployed or vulnerably employed in the informal sector face the most economic challenges. Thousands of youth who have resorted to starting and working odd jobs to earn a living make the biggest share of the 60 percent Liberians living under US $1 a day. Most cannot sustain themselves or provide for their families. In addition, they cannot consistently participate in the purchasing of goods and services in the economy.

FODEDE is optimistic that with partnership with streetfootballworld and others international and local partners, we can jointly enhance FODEDE dream of employability… the skills, knowledge and competencies that enhance a youth’s ability to secure and retain a job, progress at work and cope with change, secure another job if he/she so wishes or has been laid off and enter more easily into the labor market at different periods of the life cycle. Individuals are most employable when they have broad-based education and training, basic and portable high-level skills, including teamwork, problem solving, information and communications technology (ICT) and communication and language skills. This can be achieved through support to the CAREER HOUR vocational training center under construction in Gardnersville.

We would also like to mention in this message the great work Coaches Across Continent (CAC) have done since their partnership with FODEDE; they have provided educative coaching resources that are been very helpful to our coaching team in executing our programs, especially held during the celebration of international sports holidays (International Women’s Day, World Peace Day, International Day Of Sport For Development And Peace etc.)

Finally, I am proud of our current partners for their commitment and determination to supplement our efforts in the completions of the construction of Career Hour Center intended to provide vocational education/training. As we continue to move forward with our programs and resources, we are mindful of the traditions of the past but also looking toward the future. We are always reflecting on the needs of our members and those who work in all areas of youth empowerment through sport. It is our distinct pleasure to be able to work with everyone as part of FODEDE team.

Thank you and take care

Wallace G. Weiah

4CAREE HOUR PROGRAM

BACKGROUNDEmployability results from several factors – a foundation of core skills, access to education, availability of training opportunities, motivation, ability and support to take advantage of opportunities for continuous learning, and recognition of acquired skills – and is critical for enabling workers to attain decent work and manage change and for enabling enterprises to adopt new technologies and enter new markets.

AFODEDE seek strategies to ensure that all young women and men get opportunities to enhance their employability and improve the productivity of enterprises, the construction of a vocational training center became our main focus that recognizes the added hurdles that disadvantaged youth face in the labor market the guide pays particular attention to this group.

Young people in Liberia today face tremendous challenges securing productive work in the short, medium and long term to lead their own lives due to a huge missed out chances and educational gaps; job training programs often do not result in meaningful opportunities to learn and practice useful skills in workplace setting; especially girls overcome some of these challenges. In Liberia today, 95% of the underprivileged youths found in streets corners playing football are either illiterate or least educated and cannot afford to participate in the job market. In a bid to reduce the plights of disadvantaged youths especially girls, acquiring formal and life skills training and a more organize grassroots football programs became our concern.

The construction of a four rooms Career Hour center is ongoing at the Jimmy Jolocon School.
