BEATINGTHE BULLY
Protect children fromcyberbullying
From hate pages to extreme humiliation on the digital space,
cyberbullying has caused severe stress, depression, andanxiety among todays youth.
While it is more prevalent in the US, cyberbullying has startedcreeping into the online habits of Filipino children and teens atan alarming rate.
As the number of Filipino kids on the Internet increases, sodoes the risk of cyberbullying. Eight out of 10 Filipino children(82%) access the Internet weekly, while more than a third(37%) are daily Internet users. Seventy three percent (73%) ofFilipino teens have online social proles as of 2010.
The thought of their children being bashed and bullied incyberspace is a nightmare for most parents, but it is worse
for the children being cyberbullied; they could suffer fromextreme depression, which could lead to fatal consequences,as reported in recent newspaper accounts.
PAY ATTENTION TO THE RED FLAGS.
Kids who are cyberbullied send
behavioral signals that they need
help, and parents should watch out
for these signals. If your child gets
mood swings, is constantly angry,
or distances himself from his family
and friends, it may not just be partof growing up; such behavior could
actually be a cry for help. If parents
notice these red ags, they could
resolve the problem before it gets any
bigger.
JOIN THE CLUB.
If your child is active in the social
network scene, you should be too.
Create your own Facebook account
if you still dont have one, and make
sure to add your child as family. That
way, youll be able to see what your
child is posting in cyberspace, and the
responses that he or she is get ting.
Without being intrusive, make sure
to observe your childs social network
activities.
HAVE A ONE-ON-ONE TALK WITH YOURCHILD.
If your child mentions having trouble
with people online, like being
threat ened, insulted, or otherwi se
subjected to inappropriate behavior,
sit him down for a s erious one-on-one
discussion. Listen carefully to what
he has to say, and try to nd out how
he feels and what exactly disturbs
him. Assure him that you are always
there to support him in what ever he is
going through. Make him understand
Here are some ways to protect your childfrom being cyberbullied:
that nothing is w rong with him, tha t
it is the cyberbully who is w rong by
trying to be soc ially dominant and
abusive online. Let him know what
cyberbullying is and how seriously it
affects the victim.
On the other hand, if your child
happens to be the cyberbully, step in
immediately. Make it clear that it is
never right to abuse, offend, or bash
others, online or otherwise. Stressout the consequences of his actions.
SHOW SUPPORT.
Take cyberbullying seriously, and help
your child cope wit h the stress. This is
a very difcult situation for your child;
he will need your guidance to help him
get through this. You may also tap
professional help to work with you and
your child on this problem.
FIND BETTER THINGS TO DO ONLINE.
Your child doesnt have to stay of ine.
Make your childs Internet experience
positive by nding better onlinecommunities or visiting websites with
afrmative content. Protecting your
child against Internet threats does not
mean never exploring cyberspace ever
again. Remind him that with proper
guidance, the Internet can still be his
tool for learni ng and discovery.
TAKE ACTION.
Parents who seriously want to protect
their childr en from cyber bullying and
other Internet threats but do not
want to deprive them of the joy of
learning and exploration will nd an
ally in Tattoo. Tattoo Home Broadband
