ICSPECIAL APPLICATIONS

iv Autoquip Corporation © 2001

Choose the right equipmentAutoquip products have been designed to perform

specific tasks. Customer satisfaction is paramount

and it is important that consideration be given to

all of the following conditions to insure the proper

lift is matched to a specific job application.

Lowered Height - Model selection considerations should includemaximum lowered height for application. Forground level operations, consider pit mountingof the unit.

Vertical Travel - Decide how high a load needs to be raised andnote the distance. Specifications for allAutoquip lifts show “standard vertical travel.”Distances are expressed in inches. Select oneof these standard travels (or the next highertravel) from the specification tables shown forthe product being considered.

Raised Height -Model selection considerations should includemaximum raised height for application. Forhigher level operations, consider a double highmodel.

GENERAL & TECHNICAL INFORMATION

Double Long, Double Wide and Double High

Single Scissors LiftAlso referred to as “Single Stage” type with power unit normally mounted between legs.Depending on application, can be combined into Double Long, Double Wide or even Double High.

Double Long Scissors LiftFor applications requiring very long platforms. Combination consists of two standard scissorslifts with a common platform and base. Single power unit controls both lifts. Rated maxi-mum capacity for combination is 80% of combined catalogued capacities of single scissorslifts selected. Consult Sales for pricing.

Double Wide Scissors LiftFor applications requiring very wide platforms. Combination consists of two standard scis-sors lifts mounted side-by-side with a common platform and base. Single power unit con-trols both sets of lifts. Rated maximum capacity of combination is 80% of combined cata-logued capacities of single scissors lifts selected.

Double High Scissors Lift For applications requiring high travel with relatively short platforms. Combination consists oftwo standard lifts stacked one on top of the other. The capacity rating is that of the upperlift. Lower lift must be sized to raise rated load plus weight of upper lift. Single power unitin lower lift controls both sets of lifts. Travels which exceed 60” may require guarding –consult sales. Double pantograph models are also available

© 2001 Autoquip Corporation v

Lifting Capacity -Lifting capacity is the gross weight a lift isrequired to raise. Determine the maximumweight that must be handled. Select a “stan-dard lifting capacity” for one of the Autoquipproducts from the specification table. Whendoing so, be sure to consider the following:

Side-End Load - the amount of static load thatcan be applied over the edge of a lift platformin the fully raised position.

Axle Load - rolling load which takes intoaccount the added forces applied to the liftthrough momentum and impact of the wheels.

edge4,500 lbs. 4,500 lbs.

8,000 lbs.8,000 lbs.

4,000 lbs. per axle

4,500 lbs. 4,000 lbs 4,000 lbs.

axleEdge and Axle Loading

The Edge Load capacity of a lift is the maximum “static”weight that can be supported along the edge of the platform. In order to derate a static edge load rating to an allowabledynamic axle load rating, divide by 1.5.EXAMPLE: Lift with 4,500 lb. edge load rating has3,000 lb. axle load capacity.

The Axle Load capacity of a lift is the maximum “dynamic”weight that can be rolled across the lift’s edge. In order toconvert a catalogued axle load rating to a static edge loadrating, multiply by 1.5.EXAMPLE: Lift with 4,000 lb. axle load rating has a6,000 lb. edge load capacity.

GENERAL & TECHNICAL INFORMATION

Platform Size -Determine overall dimensions which thelargest load will occupy and attempt toselect a “Standard Platform Size” from anAutoquip product specification table. If anon-standard platform size is required, findthe minimum and maximum size of theplatform for a particular model lift. Be surethe required size falls within the availablerange. Factors affecting platform size arelifting capacity, vertical travel, pit installa-tion requirements, mounting of variousaccessories, etc. Electric toe guards orhanging toe indicator bars are required onunits equipped with straight side plat-forms. Toe protection is required per ANSIMH29.1.

Oversize Platform - will also require derating. The end or side load capacity must bereduced by 2% for each additional inch thatis added to the Standard Minimum Platformwidth or length.

Pit Mounting -For pit mounted installations, OSHA requiresplatforms be equipped with toe protection, (i.e.beveled toe guards, electric toe guards or hang-ing toe indicator bars). The minimum loweredheight is noted in the product matrix for eachmodel; however roller shades or accordion skirt-ing may increase the lowered height of the unit.Pit mounted turntables require bevel toe guardson lift, skirting on turntable and an orientationinterlock if the turntable platform dimensionsare equal to or less than the lift platformdimensions. If turntable platform size exceedslift platform size, beveled toe guards onturntable and an orientation interlock arerequired.

Operating Speed -Product specification tables will provide thestandard operating speed for a unit. If differentrequirements are needed, request informationfrom sales.

Duty Cycles -Standard duty - for general industrial applica-tions. Number of cycles should not exceed100,000 per year. Equipment downtime doesnot adversely affect production under theseconditions. (The “frequency” of lift operationsshould not exceed standard shown below.)

High cycle - when total number of cycles peryear exceeds 100,000. When possible equip-ment downtime could seriously affect produc-tion. Speed and cycle frequency determinessize of power unit, motor horsepower, pumpoutput, and tank capacity to dissipate heatbuildup. Power units are usually built for con-tinuously running operation. Special pivot bear-ings are used which have longer life at highcycles. Units are designed to accommodatefatigue stress and extra wear.

High Speed - when required speed exceeds stan-dard catalogued speed, larger pump and motorsare used.

Frequency of Lift Operations - Intermittent duty rated motors are used in allstandard applications and are rated for a fre-quency of operation not exceeding one full liftevery 2 minutes. Failure to observe these fre-quencies could cause motor to overheat.

If “jogging” is required, as a part of a feedingoperation, be sure jogs are limited to one 2 sec-ond jog every 10 seconds for a limited time, but not to exceed 200 motor starts an hour. Ifapplication should require greater frequency, check with Sales department for a high cyclerated special lift, which is equipped with a con-

tinuous-running power unit. (NOTE: All inter-nally mounted power units are equipped withoil and power cord. Externally mounted powerunit does not include either.)

Turntables -Stand-alone1. All standard turntable capacities assumethat the load on the turntable is uniformly dis-tributed and that the C.G. of the load is placedwithin 10” of the center pin.

2. Standard turntables are not designed towithstand true edge or axle loading. If edge oraxle loading is anticipated, additional turntableplatform support at the edges must be consid-ered and provided.

3. The smallest turntable platform size withbevel toe guards is 44” x 44” to adequatelyclear the support rollers mounted to the stan-dard 24” x 24” turntable base plate.

4. Turntables are available with optionaldetents, locks, physical stops, limit switch sig-nals, or powered drive.

Mounted to Lifts5. If the lift platform provided is the standardminimum size (with or without bevel toeguards), the lift capacity does not have to bede-rated for the mounting of manual turntablesup to 48” x 48” in size.

6. Regardless of platform size, the lift capacitymust be derated by 500 lbs. for the mountingof catalogued powered turntables which exceed36” x 36” in size.

viii Autoquip Corporation © 2001

GENERAL & TECHNICAL INFORMATION

7. As a rule, turntable platform dimensionsmust not exceed either maximum allowableplatform dimension of the lift that it mounts to.Exceptions will be reviewed and approved byEngineering on an application by applicationbasis.

8. Turntables that mount to lifts in pits must beat least 10” in lowered height to accommodatebevel toe guards and a “home position” limitswitch on the turntable platform.Tilters -Stand-alone1. A tilter application form & approval isrequired if at least one of the following condi-tions exist:

a. Tilt angle in excess of 45 degrees, or

b. Platform requirements exceed standard, or

c. Off-center loading along the width of the platform is required, or

d. Container size exceeds, in any dimension, 50”W x 50”L x 55”H without a pallet or 50”W x 48”L x 48”H on a pallet up to 5”H, or

e. Any container load (including pallet) which has a height/length ratio greater than 1.0

Mounted to Lifts2. Regardless of platform size, the liftingcapacity must be de-rated by 500 lbs. for themounting of catalogued tilters.

3. Tilter platform width must not exceed themaximum allowable lift platform width.

4. Tilters mounted to lifts must tilt over theroller end of the lift, never over the side. Totalload plus tilter weight must not exceed themaximum allowable end load of the lift.Power supply - Standard for single phase horsepower units is230V/1PH/60Hz. 115V/1PH/60Hz is also avail-able. Standard for three phase power units is208/230/460V/3PH/60Hz. (NOTE: Alwaysspecify power supply requirements. Properoperation on 115 Volt power involves the provi-sion of a separate 30 amp or larger circuit andadequate wiring to assure an actual 115 Voltsat the control box during operation under fullload.)

Controls - 24VAC is standard control voltage, 115VAC and24VDC are available upon request. Whereapplicable, standard controls include anUP/DOWN constant pressure pushbutton sta-tion. Also available upon request are foot, keyand automatic (PLC) operating devices.
