It is difficult to believe that this will be the last newsletter for this term! Where has the time gone? From the school’s point of view, this has been a very busy and productive term. Our Year 12 students have been interviewed and our parent information night conducted, with some hands-on activities designed to strengthen the partnership between students, parents and staff. Year 12 students have been working with their mentors in honing their study skills, and some have attended the optional Friday afternoon study skills sessions. Hopefully the hard work and organisation of students will give them the confidence they need to successfully meet the challenge of Half-Yearly examinations head on.

Our Year 10 students are currently doing their two week stint of work experience. Already, the positive stories and experiences are rolling in. I’d like to thank our local businesses for their ongoing and ever-reliable support for our students, through their generosity of time and effort over these weeks.

This term has seen a Swimming Carnival, Spirit Day (with fantastic speaker, Luke Kennedy), the appointment of a new School Office Manager (well done Chris Moulds!), evacuation and lockdown drills, the adoption of the new mobile device procedures, two rounds of OPAL for Years 10 to 12, the Gloucester Show, Duke of Ed sleepover, University Roadshow, Onstage excursion, two Parent / Teacher evenings, the Year 7 Great Aussie Bush Camp, Art Express excursion, Mock Trial, Lions Youth of the Year, Vocal Camp at Lake Keepit, major staff Professional Learning events, Term 1 Collegial Leadership Network meetings for executive staff, the completion of the 2016 School Plan update, and the completion of the GHS Annual Report. All this on top of a full commitment of lessons, extracurricular activities and sporting events. It’s no wonder we’re all tired!

If you’d like to look at what we have planned this year in our School Plan, this is on our school’s website http://www.gloucester-h.schools.nsw.edu.au/our-school/school-plan. If you would like to view what the school’s achievements have been during 2015 in our Annual Report this will also available on the school website by the end of next week.As this is the last newsletter this term, I’d like to wish you all a relaxing holiday. I look forward to a great Term 2.

THREE MONTHS EXCHANGEThis Saturday 2 April, Madalyn and Emily fly to New Zealand for three months on a Rotary Australia and New Zealand Exchange program. They have been matched with families in New Zealand and will be living with that family for the next three months.

Madalyn will be living with the Robinsons who live in a town called Kerikeri which is in the Bay of Islands on the North Island of New Zealand. Madalyn will be attending Kerikeri High School which has around 1500 students.

Emily will be living on a dairy farm at Dargaville also on the North Island and is at the bottom of the Bay of Islands which is two hours north of Auckland. Emily will be living with the Nillson Family and will attend Dargaville High School.

While in New Zealand the girls will attend a week Safari trip around the North Island with the other Australian exchange students. This will be based in Taupo and from there they will be doing many fun things like white water rafting, caving, and having the option to go bungy jumping. On Satruday 25 June, the girls will be flying back to Australia with their New Zealand exchange students. The New Zealand exchange students then will be living with Madalyn and Emilys’ family for three months. The exchange students will then both attend Gloucester High for the following three months.

Thank you to Gloucester Rotary 9650 for supporting this program. The girls are very excited and grateful to be given this opportunity.

CAREERS NEWSYear 10 Work ExperienceYear 10 students are currently out on Work Experience. There is a wide variety of placements in and outside of the Gloucester community. Fifty eight out of sixty one students were able to secure two weeks of placement, and hopefully, the remaining students acquire some type of work next week. I will be visiting or making contact with all host employers in the next week to ensure students are following the Work Experience guidelines. I would also like to remind all students to provide their host employer/s with their Evaluation Reports, as this will be the basis for the Post Work Experience activities conducted in Careers lessons next term. I hope you’re all having an amazing time! Mr De Angelis

U14’S BUCKLEY SHIELD RUGBY LEAGUE On Wednesday 30 March, Gloucester High School U14’s Rugby League squad travelled to Tuncurry Rugby League Park and competed in a carnival day set up by the ARL (Australia Rugby League). Each game was 25 minutes in length. Schools represented included, Taree, Wingham and Chatham High schools, Bulahdelah Central School, Great Lakes Campus.

Our opening game was against Great Lakes campus. We came out nervous, made some mistakes and by half time we were down 24 -0. In the second half the boys played better footy and scored a try and only conceded one against us. Great Lakes had some strong runners and we found it hard to stop their momentum. Leon scored our try and Bailey kicked the goal. Final score was 30-6.

U14’S BUCKLEY SHIELD CONTINUED...Our second match was against Taree High School who had a strong large squad of players. Due to us being under numbers, Taree loaned us a player to create our 13. From the kick off we were under pressure with Taree putting on points through some really talented players they had playing out wide. Our boys battled hard in defence and could not match it with their pace and ability to evade tackles. When we had our opposition on their line our defence was good and the few chances we had with the ball looked exciting. The end score was 44-0.

All our players where outstanding on the day with every student playing above their regular requirements, either increased work load or playing against older and bigger players. We came away injury free both Mr Cameron and Mr Wisely felt great bringing the all the boys home in one piece.

We would like to thank the parents and supporters who travelled to Tuncurry as your cheers and words of support could be heard. Thanks to Mr Cameron for driving the school bus and to Lucas for running water and your player support.

We now look forward to our next game of U14s Rugby League which is the Bulahdelah Gala Day later in Term 2. Thanks to all the players for their courage and spirit which made our day a great experience for all.

MOCK TRIAL WINNERSThe 2016 NSW Law Society Mock Trial competition got underway this month with Gloucester competing against Coonabarabran High School. These schools met at the halfway point of Tamworth Council Rooms. Gloucester was the prosecution in a 'driving in a manner dangerous' case in which Gloucester represented the police case. The team was composed of Steph -Barrister, Blake - Solicitor, Ruby - Magistrate, Kelsey - Associate and our two witnesses were Laura and Jasmin. All team members acquitted themselves very well. Laura and Kelsey scored 100% for their roles and Jasmine scored 90% for her role. Our Barrister made good objections but as the magistrate pointed out they will need to explain their reasoning more clearly next time. Both barrister performed with distinction and showed form that we hope will further develop in the next round.

Essentially, the court had to determine whether the driver of a car moving out into a flow of traffic was driving in a manner, dangerous when they collided with a motor cyclist. The court on this occasion didn't believe that the prosecution had made their case beyond reasonable doubt. The driver was therefore acquitted. However Gloucester High School ran out winners 278 to 254.

We would like to thank Mr Dunlop and Mrs L'Green who transported the students to Tamworth. Their moral support was much appreciated.

Our next round will be against Wauchope High School and will take place on the first Friday of Term 2. Best wishes to the team in this next round. This team is well experienced and will present some significant challenges. We will be acting as the defence in this case.
