Glyceryl Trinitrate Patches are Effective in Angina But not for 24 hours

Claims that glyceryl !nnitrate [nitroglycerin] patches work to prevent myocardial ischaemia for 24 hours remained unsupported by weH-designed clinical Irials. In 1 randomised placebo-controlled double-blind study. 12 men with chronic stable angina received a transdermal system containing glyceryl ! rinitrate 25mg and in another study nearly twice thai dose of glyceryl Irinitrate was applied to the skin of patients with angina pectoris. However, both groups of wor1<ers were unable to demonstrate thai glyceryl Irinitrate was effective over 24 hours. Further, the former study did not clearly state that lhe transdermal system was effective for > 3 hours and in the latter study the results showed the preparation was ineffective 4 hours after application.
