Critical Thinking is a process by which we use our knowledge and intelligence to effectively arrive at the most reasonable and justifiable positions on issues.

Critical Thinking also tries to identify and overcome the numerous hindrances to rational thinking.

If we want to have a reasonable and justifiable opinion on GM food, we need to get some more information and look at both sides of the issue.

The arguments for GM foods:

• GM food is nothing new - farmers have been modifying plant and animal genes for thousands of years!

• GM seeds and foods are tested more than other seeds and foods.

• GM food could save problems with food shortages and vitamin deficiency (e.g. super rice in Africa)

The arguments against GM foods:

• We do not know if GM food is safe (e.g. genes can mutate)

• Genetically modified plants will breed with natural plants

• Farmers have to pay more money for genetically modified seeds

• GM tomatoes might be bigger and redder, but they don’t taste good!
