Sitting watching her Pathfinders shoot practice arrows in the archery program, Connie-Lee Heath smiles and says, “we made it.” The Fort McMurray, AB Guider and five other leaders are here with 19 Pathfinders who didn’t even let a forest fire stop them from attending GM2016. “We don’t know how we got here, but we’re here and with everything we needed for camp,”said Connie-Lee. The girls had been fundraising for their GM trip for some time when the forest fire in May nearly dashed their hopes of attending camp. But the generosity and support of the Guiding sisterhood at the district, area and national levels gave hope where there was little, and ensured these 19 girls made it to camp. “The response from across Canada has been overwhelming,”said Connie-Lee. “The Peace River, AB Guiders made individual blankets for the girls, embroidered with their names, and that’s what hit us the hardest with Girl Guides; we realized that everyone has come together and wanted to get us here.” The road to GM2016 hasn’t been an easy one for the Fort McMurray girls. Even travelling to camp kept their ordeal fresh, as they had to pick up girls who Cont’d on page 2. Connie-Lee Heath proudly displays her Fort Mac Strong crest.
