Educate yourself
GMO! The WHAT and WHY you
should be concerned
8 Facts
1. According to the USDA, in 2009, 93% of soy, 93% of cotton, and 86% of corn grown in the U.S. were GMO.
2. The FDA does not require labeling to indicate the presence of GMOs and does not monitor new genetically engineered products.
3. Most developed nations do not consider GMOs to be safe.
4. Monsanto is the leading producer of genetically engineered (GE) products, provides 90% of the seeds used in the US market.
5. GE crops are contaminating neighboring crops worldwide.
6. A branch of Terminator Genes have been created which are imbedded in seeds to make the next generation planting cycle extinct-‐the previous years seed saved will not germinate, causing you to buy new seed each season.
7. The process of genetic engineering can thus introduce dangerous new allergens and toxins into foods that were previously naturally safe.
8. Unlike chemical or nuclear contamination, genetic pollution is self-‐perpetuating; It can never be reversed or cleaned up.
1
In 1996, the first genetically modified seeds were planted in the United States for commercial use. Now they are grown on 102 million hectares worldwide-‐ United States being the largest followed by Argentina, Brazil, Canada an India. These laboratory-‐created mutation crops are most times unlabeled, virtually untested and now on grocery shelves everywhere-‐ yes, even your own.
“So…?”
A recent study showed that GM corn caused significant immune system changes. This might be contributing to the rise in allergies or other immune disorders in North America. Further, fertility problems were seen among American pigs and cows fed on GM corn. These ‘unknown long-‐term effects’ could have a lethal future for the human race, starting with your health and that of your family.

Why we should be concerned: “Nobody knows what the long-‐term effect will be.”
– Geneticist, David Suzuki, giving the 2008 Commonwealth Lecture in London
What is “GMO?” Genetically Modified Organism
Genetic engineering is a radical new experimental technology that forces DNA together from different species, which could not occur in nature or traditional crossbreeding creating unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and viral gene.
This means their DNA is specifically engineered to withstand more pesticides and other chemicals, which increases the crop’s profits. It also increases GM produce we’re ingesting into our bodies, and the growing number of resulting health problems is something we may never know.
What you can do: § Purchase Organic products § Buy fresh and local-‐ Support
farmers through farmers markets § Avoid crops you know to be
genetically modified § Write a member of Congress § Grow your own produce § Educate others and family
members § Ask questions
