On Monday November 3rd Deb
Parent led a Wen-Do Self-Defense
workshop for female residents at New
College.
Wen-Do workshops are de-
signed and taught by women, for
women. They empower women of all
ages, sizes, and fitness levels to avoid
assault and protect themselves with
their voice and body in the case an
assault occurs.
Many women may feel that
they are too weak to protect them-
selves but Deb busted that perception
by teaching us techniques to use our
bodies to maximize strength and im-
pact on an attacker. It was empower-
ing to come to understand how much
strength we actually embody and Deb
led us to harness and embrace that
power. By the end of the session the
camaraderie and support for one an-
other in the room was palpable. Resi-
dents left with a sense of empower-
ment and accountability for informing
fellow women about their agency in
protecting and defending themselves.
We also discussed issues sur-
rounding male dominance and were
provided a safe space to discuss our
real experiences as women in a patri-
archal society. I learned a great deal
from the Wen-Do workshop and my
attitude towards my ability to value
and protect myself has shifted to one
of confidence and pride. Female resi-
dents can take what they learned to
make residence a safer and more em-
powering space for all.

AFRO-LATIN DANCE PARTY
WEN-DO SELF-DEFENSE WORSHOP
On Friday, November 21, the
residents of 45-7 and their don orga-
nized an Afro-Latin Dance party.
Held in the Wilson Lounge, over fifty
students from different countries and
cultures came to dance.
Students came with an eager-
ness to learn from one another. The
African students taught everyone how
to dance in forms that are traditional
to Africa. All the attendees formed
lines and circles following one anoth-
er and vibin’ off each other.
Later as the night went on, the
Latin students from Ecuador began to
teach all the attendees how to Salsa,
Bachata and Bomba. Everyone kept
dancing till their shirts were soaked
with sweat!
The Afro-Latin dance party was
an extremely fun event, filled with
energy, enthusiasm and passion for
dance that nobody wanted the night to
come to an end!
On Saturday, November
29th, New College hosted over 450
residents for its annual Holiday
Dinner! Much merriment and
laugher filled Wetmore Hall and
Wilson Hall as Chef Robert served
up a delicious holiday spread. Poin-
settias, brightly decorated ever-
greens, and candy canes galore
helped bring the holiday spirit. At
the end of an amazing meal shared
with friends, residents were treated
to Simon’s Famous Baked Alas-
ka—if it wasn’t famous then, it cer-
tainly is now!
With their bellies full and
their faces aching from laughing,
New College staff and students
made their way over to the William
Doo Auditorium for another extra
special treat! The Holiday Talent
show, organized and hosted by the
New College Residence Council ,
featured some of New College’s
most talented residents. The audi-
ence cheered and laughed along
with their fellow residents on stage.
At the end of the night, residents
enjoyed some more delicious des-
serts.
Thanks for coming!
