Foreword

This book is the result of the three frustrating

years I spent trying to find a ‘real’ work-at-

home job. At the time, my husband and I had

just moved to a remote section of east Texas

and I was in need of work. I tirelessly searched

online, trying to find a legitimate way to make

money from home. After six months of turning

up nothing but work-at-home scams, I gave up

hope of ever finding a real home-based career.

I ended up taking a low-paying job that was a

mile from my home so I could contribute

something to our household budget. I resumed

my search for that elusive at-home career,

doing countless hours of online hunting at

night while working a regular job during the

day. After three years, I finally realized my

dream.

Yes, it really did take me three years of

research to find all the outstanding home-

based jobs and careers that appear in this

directory, but my standards are incredibly high

– I simply would not settle for a low-paying,

thankless job just to be able to work from my

house. I wanted a REAL job with REAL pay,



benefits, and all the other perks that come

with traditional employment.

The research alone proved to be a job in itself!

That’s why I decided to write this book. I

vowed that no one else would ever have to

search that long, or experience such heart-

breaking disappointment, in order to find a

genuine home-based job.

Chapter One Kick the Commute!

With more and more of us feeling the pain of

skyrocketing gas prices, telecommuting has

become a very attractive option for stay-at-

home moms, military spouses, retirees, or just

about anyone who is searching for a

legitimate way to make money working

from home.

Whether you’re looking to contribute to your

family’s finances, earn extra cash for

unexpected expenses, or secure a full-time

home-based job, you’ll find that perfect

all the scams to reveal the most lucrative and

legitimate work-from-home career options.

From freelance to full-time, I’ve included a

wide variety of career fields and resources to

However, only you can decide if an opportunity

There are many career fields to choose from,

covering a wide range of skills and

specializations. The most popular position is

remote Customer Service Representative,

or Home Agent. Next in line are positions that

are clerical in nature, such as virtual

assisting, data entry and transcription.

Freelance opportunities are numerous and

can be very profitable if you have the right

skills and training.

Customer Service Representative

As a customer service representative or home-

based agent, you work from the comfort of

your own home office providing customer

support via phone, email, chat and/or

instant messaging. There are inbound and

outbound call positions depending on the

company. Inbound calls focus mainly on

taking product orders, resolving customer

issues, troubleshooting, etc. Outbound calls

consist primarily of cold-calling, appointment

setting, fundraising and sales.



This is a great work-from-home opportunity as

it offers the ultimate in flexibility – you get to

schedule your own hours! To be successful

in this position you must have a pleasant

phone voice, strong customer service skills,

high-speed internet access, updated

computer, land-based phone line and a quiet

place to work. Having a professional home-

office set-up is crucial as well. If you need to

upgrade or replace any component of your

home office, you will find trusted vendor links

listed at the end of Chapter Three.

Data Entry

It’s sad to say, but let’s face it – 99% of the

work-at-home data entry jobs on the internet,

in newspapers and magazines are SCAMS.

There are precious few that are legitimate

but you’d never know they exist because they

never advertise! These companies have been

in business for years and have never had a

problem filling their job openings. The jobs are

filled solely by word-of-mouth advertising.



If you can type at least 60wpm and key at

least 10,000kph with exceptional accuracy,

then this career field would definitely be worth

looking into. To prepare you for this type of

work there are free practice drills and

tutorials available in Chapter Four that will

help you improve your typing and ten-key

speed and accuracy.

Freelance

Freelance opportunities are exploding! The

traditional workforce is being downsized but

the work is still piling up, so many companies

are looking to freelancers to fill their

staffing needs.

Freelancing is a very viable option for

people facing job uncertainty. There are a

number of web sites dedicated to connecting

freelancers and employers of all types and

sizes, and I’ve included them in Chapter Six.



Transcription

Due to the rise in popularity of online

lectures, webinars, podcasts, webcasts

and the like, the need is quickly growing for

skilled typists to transcribe these types of

audio files.

If you possess exceptional English language

and grammar skills and you can type at

least 75wpm, then you can transcribe audio

to text. Some companies will require you to

take a transcription test as part of their

application process.

There are companies out there who will hire

you with no experience. If you’re looking to

break into this lucrative career field, Tigerfish

you-earn’. Although the pay is low, it’s a

great way to get your feet wet and prepare for

those high- paying, high-demand transcription

jobs.

Virtual Assistant (VA)

If you’ve got secretarial, accounting, travel

or management experience consider

becoming a Virtual Assistant. VAs handle

bookkeeping, administrative duties,

clerical work, travel arrangements,

transcription and other business support

services that can be done remotely via e-

mail and phone. A VA is often hired by small

business owners and executive professionals

who need an assistant but can’t afford to hire

one on a full-time basis, or they just don’t

have the office space to accommodate one.

Therefore, they hire Virtual Assistants from

remote locations to do their administrative

work for them.

I’ve provide you with many valuable VA

tools and resources to aid you in securing a

job in this high-demand career field. They’re

located at the end of the ‘Virtual Assistant’

chapter.



Chapter Two Accounting/Bookkeeping If you have accounting or bookkeeping

skills, why not consider working from home?

There are many businesses, both brick-and-

mortar as well as online, that require a

bookkeeper. It's an easily outsourced

position and it pays well.

Freelance Bookkeepers can make upward of

$30/hour easily. Some bookkeepers will

charge a flat monthly fee ranging from $200 -

$800 a month depending on the

responsibilities.

Typical duties for a freelance bookkeeper

include tracking business income and

expenses, reconciling bank statements, making

deposits, payroll, billing and reports.

Many small business owners can't afford an

accountant or CPA and so they opt for a

bookkeeper. Or they may use the bookkeeper

for general duties and hire a CPA to handle

their taxes.



You can find clients locally through small

advertisements and word of mouth. There are

also many jobs that come through freelance

job boards like elance that you can bid on. To

help jump-start your search and get you on

your way, on the following pages I’ve included

four noteworthy companies that hire you to

small, mid-size, and fast-growing businesses.

As a CPA, you are responsible for managing

providing controllership services to BYB

clients. They are looking for self-motivated

candidates, who can provide superior

professional services on a telecommuting

basis. Excellent verbal and written

communication skills and the ability to

prioritize multiple client and staff needs are a

must.

Additional CPA requirements:

• CPA plus 5 or more years-prior public

accounting or controllership experience

with small to mid-sized companies and

start-up businesses

• Proven experience in managing a staff





Outside Salesperson

BYB is looking for experienced, upbeat

individuals to give presentations for

outsourced bookkeeping and controllership

services. In addition to visiting prospects,

this position also solicits new clients around

existing clients’ and prospects’ locations. As an

outside salesperson, you function as a

communications link to increase service to

clients and obtain referrals. You would also

manage the supply of business

information and lists for the inside

marketing department.

Outside Salesperson requirements:

• Excellent communication skills

• Some evenings and Saturdays

Bateman & Company primarily prepares

individual, partnership, and corporate tax

returns, including reviewing accounting

Telecommuting Staff Accountant
