ATLANTA—The Martin Luther King, Jr. National Park Service is ready to welcome visitors from near and afar to the Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church Heritage Sanctuary.

The Heritage Sanctuary is open again, following a three-year multi-million dollar restoration to its 1960’s appearance.

Inside the sanctuary, visitors can sit on one of the wooden pews and hear a tape-recorded sermon of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Close your eyes and imagine that you are part of the congregation witnessing the words of the great Civil Rights leader as he spoke boldly about fighting segregation in the face of the immediate danger on his life and his family’s.

From the stained glass windows to the wooden plaque posted bearing the numbers of church hymns, visitors can step back in time. The church’s balcony, original wall color, hardwood flooring, wooden pews, pulpit, altar furniture, stained glass windows, baptismal pool and other interior structures have been restored to their original form a half century ago.

“The structure as it appears now is not only beautiful but, because of its role in American history, it possesses an inspirational power that can once again be experienced by all who visit,” said Judy Forte, Superintendent, Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site.

The restoration, which was launched in late 2007, was unveiled in a ceremony on April 15 during a week of celebration events, which included a panel discussion with Civil Rights leaders and scholars exploring the role of the African-American Church during the

Civil Rights Movement. While Ebenezer Baptist Church has a

rich local history spanning over 100 years, it garnered the world’s attention during the years of 1960-1968. It was during that time that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. returned to Atlanta to co-pastor with his father, the Rev. Martin Luther King, Sr., at Heritage Sanctuary. The African-American church in general, and specifically Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, played a critical role as a social, economic, and political institution in the Civil Rights Movement. Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church gave rise to a spiritual leader who forever changed the social climate of the United States. The courage and conviction with which Dr. King led the modern Civil Rights Movement had a strong spiritual basis, which was founded at Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church.

Ebenezer Baptist Church was founded in 1886. Because of its associations with King and the modern day Civil Rights Movement, it is one of the best-known and most historically significant churches in Atlanta. It was the site for many Civil Rights conferences and strategy meetings, as well as Dr. King’s funeral in 1968.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site and Preservation District was established by Congress on Oct.10, 1980. It consists of more than 38 acres (13 federally owned) near downtown Atlanta. It includes 67 historic buildings, most built between 1890 and 1910. The preservation district surrounding the site includes nearly 230 historic structures.

If You Go:Heritage Sanctuary is located at 407 Auburn Ave. in downtown Atlanta. Self-guided tours are available daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For guided tours of Dr. King’s birth home, also located on Auburn Avenue, register in person at the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site’s Freedom Hall, 449 Auburn Ave. The birth home tours are free and conducted daily by park rangers every half hour to hour. Parking is available at the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site. For more information, call: 404-331-5190.

ATLANTA—Join the celebration as the Atlanta Braves plays host to Major League Baseball’s fifth annual Civil Rights Game. The event pays tribute to those who have fought for civil rights on and off the field. Jimmie Lee Solomon, MLB’s executive vice president for baseball development, called Atlanta, the home of slain civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr., an easy choice as the host city for the 2011 event. The Civil Rights Game began in 2007 as an exhibition but has been played as a regular season game since 2009. Cincinnati has hosted the event for the last two years. One of the highlights of the Civil Rights Game weekend celebration in Atlanta will be held on Saturday, May 14, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Centennial Olympic Park in the city’s downtown. Take the kids to meet MLB players and celebrities. They will also have a chance to participate in baseball and softball clinics.

In addition to the free clinics, the annual “Wanna Play? Spectacular and Youth Summit” includes interactive stations, performers and local celebrities. The park’s event winds down with a parade to Turner Field.

At Turner Field, the action picks up again with the Braves vs. the Phillies at 1:10 p.m. With your game ticket, you can enjoy a one-hour performance by Ludacris after the game. The Braves play the Phillies again on Sunday, May 15, 1:35 p.m., at Turner Field. The game itself will feature pre-game ceremonies and in-game musical performances highlighting the Civil Rights Movement. Both teams will wear throwback Negro League uniforms.

Log Cabin Storytelling series offers blast from the past

The DeKalb History Center will present its Log Cabin Storytelling series this summer beginning June 1. Kids, ages 4-12, will learn about the past through old-fashioned hands-on activities that give a glimpse of American pioneer life. The Wednesday programs will be held 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., at the Biffle Cabin, 720 West Trinity Place, Decatur.

Local historian Fran Fratz will lead the sessions, including basket weaving and a summertime favorite—churning ice cream.

The series begins with candle making on June 1 and continues throughout July. Organizers say kids will learn first hand what pioneer life was like through history lessons, children’s chores, bartering and science.

The cost to attend is $6 per child per session. Adults may accompany their child at no charge. Students ages 4 to 5 must be accompanied by an adult. For more information, call 404-373-1088 or visit http://www.dekalbhistory.org/index.htm.

Other activities include making bug-shaped cookies, making presentations and learning the best way to catch an insect.

“When some students come here, they are somewhat shy, but by the time the camp is over, they have developed the ability to go up in front of their peers,” said Jule Macie, who has helped with 4-H summer programs for more than 10 years.

Rockdale County’s Cooperative Extension office is located at 1400 Parker Road, Conyers. The price to attend the session is $50. 770-278-7373.

CONYERS—You can learn about the dedicated lives of monks, see their handiwork, and taste their wonderful baked goods at the Our Lady of the Holy Spirit’s new Monastic Heritage Center in Conyers.

The monastery is rolling out the welcome mat to its 17,000-square-foot center—where a restored barn is the cornerstone—with a grand opening on May 7, noon to 5 p.m. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled at 1 p.m. to officially unveil the $6.5 million project.

Restoration of the barn started last June. The structure was the first home to 21monks who arrived at the old Honey Creek Plantation in 1944 from Kentucky. The barn fell to such disrepair over the years that it was near collapse when restoration began last summer.

The new center now houses interactive exhibits chronicling the history of the monks, as well as examples of their stained glass work. Visitors also will have a chance to see the monks’ bonsai artistry and purchase their fudge, fruitcake, cookies and biscotti, for which they are also well known.

With the center’s opening, the monastery is hoping to build on the 80,000-plus visitors it attracts annually for day trips and retreats. The 66-year-old Monastery has become a top tourist attraction for Rockdale for people of all walks of life.

The monastery, nestled among 2,000 acres in south Rockdale County, offers some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. The site includes the gothic Abbey Church, the Abbey Store with its excellent selection of books and the Honey Creek Woodlands, Georgia’s first green cemetery grounds. In 2007, part of the monastery land was designated as one of five gateways to the Arabia Mountain Heritage area, a National Historic Site and federally-protected green space that will eventually link a bike/walk path from DeKalb County to Rockdale County.

Today, about 40 monks call the Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Monastery home.

The monastery is located at 2625 Highway 212 S.W., Conyers. Visitors are welcome daily 7 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. The Welcome Center and Abbey Store are open Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays, 12:30-4:30 p.m. For more information, visit www.trappist.net or call 770-483-8705.
