GEOrGIa haS FOUrTh-MOST ObaMaCarE SIGNUPSMolly Samuels reports that we’re halfway into the open enrollment period for the Affordable Care Act. And new numbers on Obamacare are out. In the first month of open enrollment, Nov. 15 through Dec. 15, more than 187,000 people in Georgia signed up for health care coverage. More than half bought insurance from the health insurance marketplace for the first time.
MarIJUaNa OIL TrIaLS abOUT TO STarT aT GrUChildren with uncontrollable seizures could begin receiving a marijuana oil-derived drug as early as today(12-30-14) at Georgia Regents University, and others could start enrolling in a 50-patient trial, a senior GRU official said Monday. But the state will still need to have a way of growing, processing and producing the oil on its own to meet the needs of all of the children and other patients, said a chief legislative proponent for the oil.
EVIdENCE ThaT ThE JIM CrOW Era ENdUrES FOr OLdEr bLaCk VOTErS IN ThE SOUThNate Cohn writes, Democrats have lamented low black turnout for decades, but black turnout today rivals that of white voters. That’s probably in part because of President Obama, but also because of generational replacement. Most of today’s black voters have been eligible to vote since they turned 18. They have had as many opportunities to be mobilized by campaigns as white voters. But the legacy of Jim Crow seems to endure among those older voters (now age 69 and up) who were disenfranchised before the enactment of the voting rights law. In states like North Carolina and Georgia, the black share of registered voters remains low, nearly 50 years later, among the voters who reached voting age — then 21 years old — before 1965. ChICk-FIL-a LaTEST TO INVESTIGaTE SECUrITY brEaCh Chick-fil-A is investigating a possible hacking of credit card data at its restaurants, capping a tough year for American businesses trying to protect themselves against security breaches. The Atlanta-based fast food giant said Wednesday it had received reports “of potential unusual activity involving payment cards” at a few restaurants and is working with IT security firms, law enforcement and payment industry contacts to determine if the company had been hacked. The company did not say when it expects to finish the investigation. “If the investigation reveals that a breach has occurred, customers will not be liable for any fraudulent charges to their accounts – any fraudulent charges will be the responsibility of either Chick-fil-A or the bank that issued the card,” Chick-fil-A said in a statement. “If our customers are impacted, we will arrange for free identity protection services, including credit monitoring.” Chick-fil-A would be the latest in a string of security breach victims in 2014, including office supplies chain Staples, banking giant JP Morgan Chase and movie studio Sony. In September, Atlanta-based Home Depot revealed it suffered one of the nation’s biggest hacks in the spring, netting thieves 56 million credit and debit card numbers. The company later said thieves also stole 53 million email addresses. How many consumers were harmed by the Home Depot breach is unclear, but the company said customers would not be responsible for charges made on credit cards and that it would pay for customer credit monitoring. As many as 11 lawsuits against the company, many brought by banking institutions, are being consolidated into one, according to reports. Brian Krebs, whose website KrebsonSecurity.com was the first to report the Home Depot breach, said Wednesday that talk of a potential data compromise at Chick-fil-A began in November, but that the reports were spotty. Chick-fil-A had been concerned about breaches. A company spokesman told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution in early December that the company delayed the recent rollout of a mobile payment option on its phone apps in order to triple check security.

ChoicesIn government, business and our personal life.
Non-obvious actions taken in obvious moments, difficult decisions that might be easier to avoid, responses instead of reactions, and most of all, the choices we make when it doesn’t even seem like we have a choice--all of these, taken together, define who we are and the impact we make.“I had no choice,” actually means, “I had only one path that was easy
in the moment.”The agenda we invent and act on defines our organizations, our work,
and the people we choose to become. God bless America
Grand OpeningA new specialty store will be opening its doors
here in the heart of downtown Quitman
QUITMAN, GA (Dec. 31, 2014) – ‘Testaments In Glass with other Art Creations’ will be hosting their grand opening on Friday, January 9, 2015 at 305 Screven Street during their store hours of 10 am to 5 pm. The shop will be selling stained glass pieces, photography, and a variety of other art products and decorative nick-knacks.
The owner, Marsha Bacsko, has been a stained glass artist for 16 years. She is a former member of The Central Florida Stained Glass Guild and owned a studio in Kissimmee, FL. After living in Orlando for 28 years, she and her husband Charles decided to move to Quitman this past August. In addition to selling her glass art, Marsha will also do repairs if anyone who has a piece that needs some tender loving care. Starting in February she will also start offering beginner classes consisting of no more than four students at a time. Class availability and scheduling information will be provided at a later time.
“Creating stained glass artwork has been a passion of mine for a long time. The whole creative process is so peaceful for me. When I create a colorful piece, I am thankful for the talent I have been blessed with and will happily create art for His Glory for as long as I am able,” said Marsha.
Marsha has been fortunate to travel to multiple countries and will also be selling photography from the many sights she has seen. Her daughter, Angela Wild, is a recent graduate of University of Central Florida where she received her Bachelors in Advertising and Public Relations. She will be assisting her mother in the shop and selling her own drawings and paintings. The family looks forward to meeting their neighbors here at the grand opening and sharing their talents with everyone.

GSar PUTS TraINING INTO PraCTICE
Specialized training in confined space rescue, building collapse, and heavy rigging for crane operations came in handy for the Valdosta Fire Department (VFD) in the aftermath of the EF2-rated tornado that struck through Valdosta, Lowndes County on Dec. 29. Within 3 minutes, VFD units were on scene of Langdale Forrest Products, with life safety as their primary objective. In the first few minutes, there was an assessment of those trapped or injured, after 30 minutes there were patients being transported from the building to the hospital, and within the next hour, there were four or more headcounts to be absolutely certain all personnel were accounted for at the site. Some of the first responders were members of the Georgia Search and Rescue (GSAR) Task Force Team 2, a 70-member team of highly-trained rescuers representing 11 fire departments in southwest Georgia. The VFD received the prestigious GSAR designation by Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue in 2006, which came with a $1.1 million grant through the Georgia Office of Homeland Security for the purchase of equipment and team training. The GSAR team and its resources are housed at the VFD, but serve all of southwest Georgia, as well as the entire state and the nation as assigned.

A boy stopped at a pet shop every day to play with the dogs, and one day the owner said, “Why don’t you earn some money and buy one?” “I will,” he answered, and he returned a week later with $2.00. “That’s not enough,” said the man. “But take any dog you want.” He selected one, and started out the door. “But,” said the man, “that dog is lame in his legs.” Pulling up his pants legs and showing his braces to the man, he said, “We need each other.” You need the Lord. Only He can heal your heart, save your soul and solve your problems. He needs you to witness and work for Him. Like the boy said, “We need each other.”

4 Simple Steps to Achieving Your 2015 New Year’s Resolutions
by: Alicia T. Glenn
It is that time of year again -- the time when people sweep the past behind them and embrace new beginnings. What makes the new year great is that it forces you to evaluate everything you’ve done over the previous year. Most of us cringe because we feel we haven’t accomplished much. I see it every year; people set lofty goals for themselves and end up stopping after the first month. I am guilty of it. If you’re anything like me, you feel a bit anxious about the new year. You have big goals, but completely fumbled on them last year. Therefore, you doubt your ability to achieve them this time around.
The reason why gyms get the most sign-ups in January is because people genuinely want to change, but why then do they stop going after a month? I’m sure last year you committed to something like:
• Losing 30 pounds• Learning a new language• Changing careersBut looking back, nothing has changed... why is that?
Well, it’s because there is an epic flaw with the way we do New Year’s resolutions. Most of us plan to accomplish this and that, and perhaps write it down in a notebook. However, it doesn’t go much farther than that. We set our sights on a goal, and then hope to suddenly develop the focus, drive, and resilience to achieve it.
Sorry to break it to you, but hope and wanting to change isn’t enough. If it was, then everyone would be accomplishing their goals.
The key to jump starting 2015 with a bang and bettering your life lies in the four steps below.
1. Associate massive pain with the thought of not achieving your goalAs I mentioned earlier, only having the desire to change isn’t enough. You need to first change your mindset and make the conscious decision to truly commit to that new goal. Then associate massive pain to the thought of not achieving your goal. For instance, for those that don’t enjoy working out, their brain associates pain with going to the gym and running on the treadmill. Instead, they should be associating pain with NOT going to the gym. In the long run, a lack of exercise will lead them to poor self esteem and health problems. Pain needs to be associated with the thought of not working out or not achieving your individual goal.
2. Believe you can achieve your goalThis may seem simple, maybe even elementary, but it’s important. At the end of the day, if you don’t believe deep down that you can meet your goal then you won’t.You could be thinking something to the effect of:“I’ve tried to lose weight several times, what’s going to make this time different?”The problem here is that you’ve already counted yourself out before giving yourself a chance. Henry Ford said it first:
“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t -- you’re right.”
Believe that this time will be different. Know that you can do it.
3. Take it one day at a timeIt’s a marathon, not a sprint. It can be daunting to look at what you want to achieve as a whole. For instance, the goal of writing a book can feel overwhelming. Instead of wallowing in
the fact that you have to come up with 1,000 pages, perhaps say to yourself:
“I want to write every day, be it only 10 minutes or an hour. I want to make a conscious effort to make progress every day.”
Each day is an opportunity for you to chip away at your goals. Everything counts. Here’s how to make sure you stay on top of your goals for 2015.
4. Celebrate the small winsNow if you’re like me and missed your goals last year, take a moment and look at what you did achieve. Did you...• End a toxic relationship?• Perform better in your job?• Expand your network by making new friends?• Make small changes in your eating habits to better your health?
If you did something to improve your life, that is worth celebrating. Now, celebrating the small wins is the most important aspect. Self-motivation is key! Reward yourself often, especially right after you do the act. As a result, you create a positive association in your brain to that act. You just finished your workout? Wrote 500 words? Reward yourself. It makes you want to continue meeting your daily goal.
At the end of the day, you have two options for 2015. You can either:Stop setting goals (since you’re convinced you won’t achieve them anyways)
ORTake a chance and go for what you want. You are responsible for your own success. Pursuing your goals is never an easy feat but it truly pays off in the long run. During the moments you feel like quitting, just remind yourself of the long term benefits.

A Minnesota couple decided to vacation to Florida during the winter. They planned to stay at the very same hotel where they spent their honeymoon 20 years earlier. Because of hectic schedules, it was difficult to coordinate their travel schedules. So, the husband left Minnesota and flew to Florida on Thursday. His wife would fly down the following day.
The husband checked into the hotel. There was a computer in his room, so he decided to send an e-mail to his wife. However, he accidentally left out one letter in her e-mail address, and without realizing his error, he sent the e-mail.
Meanwhile.....somewhere in Houston, a widow had just returned home from her husband’s funeral. He was a minister of many years who was called home to glory following a sudden heart attack. The widow decided to check her e-mail, expecting messages from relatives and friends. After reading the first message, she fainted.
The widow’s son rushed into the room, found his mother on the floor, and saw the computer screen which read:
To: My Loving WifeSubject: I’ve ArrivedDate: 16 May 2003I know you’re surprised to hear from me. They have computers here now and you are allowed to send e-mails to your loved ones. I’ve just arrived and have been checked in. I see that everything has been prepared for your arrival tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing you then! Hope your journey is not as uneventful as mine was.P.S. Sure is hot down here!

Stuffed Chicken With Roasted Broccoli and PotatoesIngredients• 1/2 bunch broccoli (about 1/2 pound), cut into florets• 1 pound red new potatoes (about 10), halved• 3 tablespoons olive oil• kosher salt and black pepper• 1/2 cup finely chopped roasted red peppers• 2 ounces Feta, crumbled (1/2 cup)• 8 thin chicken cutlets (about 1 1/2 pounds)• 1 tablespoon chopped flat-leaf parsley
Directions1. Heat oven to 400° F with the racks in the upper and
lower thirds. On a rimmed baking sheet, toss the broccoli and potatoes with 2 tablespoons of the oil, ½ teaspoon salt, and ¼ teaspoon black pepper. Roast on the bottom rack, tossing once, until golden brown and tender, 18 to 20 minutes.
2. Meanwhile, in a small bowl, mix together the red peppers and Feta. Season the chicken with ¼ teaspoon each salt and black pepper. Dividing evenly, roll up the red pepper mixture in the cutlets (about 1 heaping tablespoon each) and fasten each closed with a toothpick.
3. Heat the remaining tablespoon of oil in a large ovenproof skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the chicken, seam-side up, until browned, 3 to 4 minutes. Turn the chicken, transfer the skillet to the top rack, and roast until cooked through, 14 to 16 minutes more. Remove the toothpicks. Serve the chicken with the vegetables, sprinkled with the parsley.
