Watch the video. Listen to greetings from
around the world.
Let’s Watch and Think
Goal: Listen to different greetings from around the world.
・Considering the developmental stage of 3rd grade students, it is
probably difficult for them to visualize what life must be like in other
areas, other countries, or in other cultures. Using the digital materials,
we can expose students to images and get them interested in foreign
languages and foreign cultures.
・While listening to the different greetings, students realize there are
different languages throughout the world. Get the students to repeat
the greetings as they heard them. As each student will hear the greeting
differently, this will be a great source of interest for them.
・Have students watch and think about the similarities and the
differences with Japan. Get the students to realize there are many
different people engaged in many different activities in their
communities and around the world. Get students to realize they live on
the same earth and are members of a global community.
Let’s Chant
・Help the students think of gestures they can use with the song.
Present the material in a way that is fun for the students. After students
are comfortable with the chant, get them to further enjoy the activity
by work in pairs or having them use their own name in the song, etc.
After your friend says their name, get them to write
their name here.
Note: Use the supplemental worksheet for extra
space, to extend the activity, or to repeat the
activity, etc. A bingo version was also provided by
MEXT.
Listen to the greetings. Connect the character
with the flag.
Tips: Get students to make predictions before
listening.
(Listening is always linked to some sort of
expectation. Thinking about what you are going
to hear can make the activity easier, more
enjoyable, or even more surprising.)
Greet your friends. Say your name.
ALT Note: An example name card template is
provided on the last page. Making
personalized items such as business cards or
items that aid in communication can motivate
students and enliven activities.
Unit 1: 2 hours
Unit 1: Hello! Let's greet and become friends
(Related Materials: HF1-L1)
Goals:
[C] While finding ways to communicate with your partner, try to
say your name and exchange greetings.
[F] Become familiar with greetings and saying names in English.
[A] Become aware that many languages exist around the world.
Expressions:
Hello. Hi. I'm (Hinata). Goodbye.
*The expressions "How are you?" "I'm (happy)." are also used.
Vocabulary:
[greetings] (hello, hi, goodbye, see you), friends, I, am, how, are,
[feelings] (fine, happy, good, sleepy, hungry, tired, sad, great)
About the Unit: Learn about different greetings in the
world. Tell your friends your name.
・The third grade hosts lots of new activities for students.
They begin to study new subjects such as science and social
studies, and learn many new skills such as how to play the
recorder. They start the year with lots of excitement.
Studying English at this level is especially exciting and
interesting, as third graders are filled with curiosity about
their world. In this first unit students are encountering a
foreign language for the first time. The first classes can
shape attitudes toward upcoming lessons and later years,
so it is important that this unit is enjoyable and memorable
for all the students.
・First, students see and experience images of different
countries and languages through the video. For students in
the third grade, their knowledge of the world is often
limited to their immediate environment that surrounds
them on a daily basis. Through this activity, they can
discover that there are many countries in the world, that
there are many people involved in activities around the
world, and that they themselves are part of this world.
Through this realization, students will be more motivated to
study English.
・The main activity involves students greeting each other
and telling their classmates their names. Students realize
that everyone has a name, that were give a name for a
reason, and that every person is an important, irreplaceable
existence. Also, through the act of greeting others, students
can experience the joy of communication and make their
class atmosphere a friendly one.
Let’s Listen
Goal: Listen to the greetings, connect the flag with character.
・The characters will say their name, their country name in English,
and a greeting from their country. Before listening students predict
what they will hear and what each character will say. Through
predicting, students are given a reason to listen as they naturally
will want to check their predictions.
・Student will not be used to hearing non-Japanese names, so this
is not an exercise in accurate listening. It is more important for
students to know the expression for saying one’s name, and to
know that everyone is important and has been given a name.
Activity
Goal: Make pairs and say your name.
・Students exchange name cards with their teachers and their
friends. Students see their friends on a daily basis, but through
greeting in English while exchanging name cards, it becomes a new
experience. Here is a good chance to emphasize that
communication with other people is a joyful experience.
・Depending on the needs of the class, students can make and
decorate small name cards and exchange those with their
classmates.
Students become familiar with English through actually using it.
・From the perspective of language acquisition, it is said that children acquire
language by using it. Although there are methods that stress that teaching clear
rules is important, this is not appropriate for the developmental level of the
students at this age. Giving students the opportunities to listen, make
predictions, and to interact with others (classmates and teachers) is the most
important point at this stage. Likewise, the new Course of Study stresses the
important of interaction while using the language to experiencing
communication. Whenever students are engaged in communicative activities, it is
important that they also think about their partners and how to best express their
ideas to their partners.
The instructors are models of language usage.
・ In order to make an environment where students try to use English in
communications activities, it is important for the teachers to actively use English.
The teachers are models of language usage. If teachers have negative views or a
dislike of English, then the students might also develop a similar attitude. Instead,
teachers that say, for example, “I can’t pronounce as perfectly as the digital
materials, and I can’t speak like the ALT, but I am not running away from English
and I am trying to communicate my ideas,” are good models as they show
students a positive attitude they can imitate and be encouraged by.
Points for the teachers to be aware of when using English:
・As much as possible, use gestures, a variety of facial expressions, and tones of
voice. This helps the students, who are unfamiliar with English, understand and
grow more accustomed to English. Repeating words and phrases while using
props or lifelike objects also makes understanding easier for the students.
