Just this year, 12-year-old Lilliana Libecki conquered her final continent – Africa. With a passion for adventure and humanitarian work inherited from her parents, Lilliana learned the joy of traveling comes from sharing culture, friendship and giving back to those you meet along the way. On this special trip to Africa and in addition to summiting Kilimanjaro, she organized her own giveback project.

We supported Lilliana by sending six employees to install solar power and lights at the Kilimanjaro Kids’ Community. This is their story.

Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world, towers over the surrounding savanna at an impressive 19,341 feet. Lilliana Libecki, age 12, and her father, Mike Libecki, were five days into their summit push when they started the final leg of their ascent. After hours of hiking the faint glow from the horizon painted the mountainside and they were greeted by an unforgettable sunrise. As they reached the summit, emotions ran high and Mike and Lilliana embraced. This summit signified more than just a father-daughter adventure. At 12 years old, Lilliana had already been to six of the world’s continents; this summit celebrated the seventh. In her relatively few years, Lilliana has visited 16 countries and experienced their landscapes, people and cultures. “This whole thing was her idea. She planted the seed for this entire trip,” commented Mike. “Africa was her seventh continent, the last one she had to tick off the list, and she wanted to do Kilimanjaro.” The summit wasn’t the only objective of the trip, Lilliana dreamed of a giveback project. While planning the expedition the Libeckis ended up at the offices of World Wide Trekking (WWT). This adventure based company was also closely tied to Human Outreach Project (HOP), a humanitarian effort that endeavored to help the areas in which WWT would visit. Dean Cardinale, WWT and HOP founder, not only provided the logistics for the climb, he also owns an orphanage near the base of the mountain. After learning the Kilimanjaro Kids’ Community (KKC) was in need of power and lights, a plan to install Goal Zero solar

systems was added to the itinerary. Dell® also joined in and sent multiple computers to help the children learn technical skills and further their education. Goal Zero not only wanted to support Lilliana’s project with equipment, we also wanted our employees to get their hands dirty and help make this dream a reality. Six Goal Zero and NRG employees met the expedition team as they descended Kilimanjaro. These two teams joined forces to provide over 1KW of solar power to the 13 beautiful children and caretakers who call the KKC home. “When we arrived at the Kids’ Community, they had minimal light in the dorm room; one in the kitchen and one in the eating area,” commented Stacie Larsen, a Goal Zero employee. “Structures on the grounds are connected by dirt paths and separated by a corn field and garden. When it got dark, these paths were close to pitch black.” Over the course of three days, the teams brought sustainable power and light to every building on the KKC premises, along with a local church and public school. “The next night when the kids headed off to bed my heart swelled knowing they each had their own little light, a lit dorm room, and security gate,” continued Larsen. “The animal caretaker also got light and power in his humble room next to the chickens and goat pen. He can now gather eggs in the morning without fear of being surprised by a snake roaming in from the corn field for an egg feast.” The KKC wasn’t at all what our team expected. Each of the children, ranging from 5 to 14, is well

cared for and live as brothers and sisters. Many of them had a very difficult start to life but now they’re flourishing. They’re eager to learn, work hard and play hard. They grow their own food and are learning English, an invaluable skill in a country where tourism rules. They are looked after by several “mamas” who work tirelessly to provide food, order, attention, and love to this unique family. The family atmosphere within the premises makes everyone feel at home, and the stark contrast from dark to light was immediately evident. The children can study into the night, safely navigate to the bathroom in the dark, and know their home is safe. The music heard from the kitchen to the corral brings smiles to the workers, and the power for their newly donated computers brings knowledge of the world to this little village in the middle of nowhere. When all was said and done, the team left the

smiling children behind and Lilliana’s dream of empowering the community was fulfilled. “It can only be hoped that one, some, or all of these children find paths to success. That their education takes them to heights thought previously unattainable,” said David Rosner, another Goal Zero employee. “The success of one educated passionate child permeates into the community, creates a ripple that sets a new standard of living. Over the years enough ripples make a wave that changes the entire way of life for a neighborhood, village, and possibly the world. One can only hope to have been one of the thousands of pieces that allowed those ripples to wash over the world. This is the hope I have. So long as Goal Zero provides these opportunities to children around the world, we create more chances of more ripples, and hedge global bets for the next wave to be a positive one, and maybe even a solar powered one.”

As the team was flying back from the Serengeti to the town of Arusha, I couldn’t help but have tears of happiness. I could see the mud huts of the Massai people and thoughts came flooding to me about the amazing people we worked with at the Kids’ Community. Witnessing what little material things they have, but of the happiness they freely gave,

made me want to change my lifestyle. Visiting allowed me to see that many complexities of life are self inflicted and get in the way of my ability to savor simpleness and prioritize higher the people around me. The pure joy I felt while in Africa is something I reflect on often. – Stacie Larsen

Visiting BelizeBY TRAVIS BURKE

Heading to Belize in Central America was like going into the unknown. Of course I’d seen the postcard-worthy white sand beaches and heard great things from the people who traveled there, but it seemed like there were other incredible places begging to be explored. So I got a few maps, packed my bags and jumped on a plane.

We spent the first week in the central part of the country. Here, the lush tropical rainforest hides ancient Mayan ruins

where elusive jaguars still run wild and toucans fly overhead. We canoed through the same underground rivers the Mayans used as sacrificial offering sights thousands of years ago. Skulls, pottery and bloodletting tools could still be seen deep within the caves. As we made our way to the coast, the white sand beaches gave way to warm crystal clear water holding some of the most abundant marine life in the world. Days were spent more underwater than on land. Small islands dot the coastlines which are surrounded by the second largest barrier reef in the world, each dive makes you feel like you’re swimming through an aquarium.

“Where to?” Guillaume asked, after eight months of towing our tiny house on wheels with no agenda and no timeline.

“North.” I chirped, and soon after we crossed the border into British Columbia.

There’s something magical about road-tripping without a plan. I enjoy getting lost in nature; it creates just enough vulnerability to truly discover your surroundings, and to fall in love. And I was falling in love with the music and scent of this fresh landscape. While wandering through British Columbia, Guillaume and I created a series of private wilderness retreats by positioning our cabin on wheels in picturesque landscapes. Our ever-changing backyard became a Garden of Eden. We couldn’t wait to explore the mysterious terrain and spent our days hiking the hills, canoeing the ponds, fishing the streams and basking in summer sunsets. Every night I fell asleep gazing through my skylight, admiring a new angle of the Milky Way. A popular mantra among road-trippers is “Home is where you park it.” Even though our tiny abode has found us many other homes since, I yearn to return to my peaceful, wild home in British Columbia.

Jenna and Guillaume’s tiny home has 125 square feet on the bottom floor with a 60 square foot loft. They began construction in September of 2013 and hit the road exactly one year later. It took more than 1,000 hours to complete and came in under $30,000, which isn’t too bad when you consider the average home in America goes for around $360K.

Meet Jenna Spesard and Guillaume Dutilh. Roughly two years ago they realized they had become bored with their jobs and daily routines. Then they discovered tiny houses. Traveling takes a lot of sacrifice, what started you down that path? I have a passion for discovering new places and sharing my experiences with my family. I didn’t get to travel much when I was younger and being able to share that with other people is really fulfilling.What do you think makes traveling so worthwhile?I love traveling! I get to discover new places, find out about new cultures, and meet new people. I think the best thing about traveling is all the new experiences I get to have.

Besides your camera and power, what is the thing that you can’t do without while on the road?I have these heated gloves I take with me on arctic trips. The essential piece of equipment to keep my fingers warm and functional when it’s freezing cold and I’m out shooting.What are your personal travel traditions?Well a big tradition of mine is taking out my knots in my back after traveling for long hours. I couldn’t stress enough how beneficial it is to have my TheraCane.What is the biggest lesson you have learned while traveling?Less is more! In the last few trips I’ve really tried to reduce my equipment to a minimum. It allows me to move around a lot easier and get more angles of the locations I’m shooting. It’s so much easier to travel with only 1 bag instead of 3 or 4.Why don’t you just go on a pre-packaged cruise like everyone else?You won’t get the same sense of adventure. I love planning and preparing my trips and I really wouldn’t want anyone taking that part away from me. It gives me total creative freedom to go wherever I want to.Any advice for those looking to find somewhere new? Google Earth! I love checking out places on Google Earth. It can really be a useful way of discovering a place and preparing yourself for it. But it doesn’t give away too much either. What place has surprised you the most? Russia. Just because it was such an adventure to travel to – it definitely was the most extreme experience I’ve ever gone through and I don’t think I will ever forget what happened there.What is the holy grail of travel destinations for you? That’s a hard one. I don’t think there’s a real ‘holy grail’ per se. For me it’s usually the most recent trips with the freshest memories that stand out. Of course there are places I will always love returning to like: Iceland and Norway, but I really try to not get too focused on one particular location.What is the mark you hope to leave on the world?My goal is to inspire people and get people to adventure. Many times, that doesn’t always have to be complicated or expensive. It’s the simple experiences of stepping into uncertainty that make an adventure worthwhile.

Try to spend 31 nights sleeping outside between Memorial Day and Labor Day. The Big idea: Spend a month sleeping under the stars without quitting your job. I had a blast trying for 31 nights out myself, and I learned a few things over the course of the summer.

Sure, whiskey is great. But when it’s getting chilly in the mountains, hot tea or hot chocolate is a more sustainable (and lighter) morale booster right before you jump in your sleeping bag for the night.

I have no scientific proof to back it up, but I can remember every day I

rolled myself out of my sleeping bag after sleeping fitfully and having a

few minutes of “nature time” during breakfast. All the days I got out of

bed to make coffee before work just kind of bleed together. Quite a few people got close to 31 nights out by Labor Day, but not quite. For 2016, we’ll make it a longer season to give everyone a bigger chance of success—even though any number of nights sleeping outside is success, really.

I was happy to see a lot of great shots of people doing “balcony bivies” and camping in friends’ front yards just to get a couple more nights outside this year.

The saying is, “The more you know, the less you need.” But I also think the more you hike, the less you mind hauling in heavy stuff for a short distance. Campsite’s only two or three miles up the trail? I’m bringing cans of chili, maybe some TastyBite, some brownies. It’s as close as some of us will get to glamping.

Obviously they’re nice. But they’re not mandatory for a decent night out in the middle of the summer, when it’s light out until after 9 p.m.

I hate to think I have an unfair advantage over anyone, but I gotta say: having a van with a mattress in it allowed me to get several nights of sleep outside this summer with minimal planning. I’ll admit it.

The more friends you have around, the later you’ll go to bed. This is a very simple

equation. If you really want to get to sleep at a reasonable hour (i.e. camping on a

school night), invite fewer people to hang out with.

Yes, camping is more fun with camp food, but if the goal is to get as

many nights as possible outside, doing away with camp breakfast

and/or dinner makes the planning less daunting. Grab a sandwich or a

burrito on your way out, and a granola bar or two for the next morning

(and maybe a canned espresso drink) and boom, you’re ready to go.

Not every campsite is photogenic, and believe it or not, there are some

benefits to just enjoying the experience instead of trying to communi-

cate it to our social media followers.

EXPLORING NEW GROUND THE HONNOLD FOUNDATION

ANGOLAAngola is a stark, harsh country in many ways. Like much of the developing world it lacks the infrastructure - both technologically and democratically - to provide equal opportunity across its vast social and physical geography. The capital city of Luanda grants a striking visual metaphor: gazing from the rooftops at night one sees mud-brick hovels next door to discoteques and five-star hotels. The countryside is ravaged of any wildlife, and everywhere we drove it was ablaze with field clearance burning. At first glance it’s easy to greet this with despondence and pessimism; however, when viewed in the context of a country barely a decade free from 34 years of civil war things take on a rosier glow.Pause on that for a second: many Angolans lived a practical lifetime in a constant state of unrest, wherein the present state of peace has become the exception to their existence.

For those of us in the western world we cannot and will not ever know what that really means. Our de facto team leader Stacy Bare had spent nearly a year clearing land mines, simply aiming to return the countryside to a basic state of usability. How many times have you scouted what looks to be a promising climbing destination only to abandon it because the approach was too threatened by the possibility of land mines?

On August 30, Alex Honnold, Stacy Bare, Ted Hesser, and myself boarded flights to Luanda with some audacious goals for a two week trip: we sought to sample the climbing, see the state of affairs 10 years after Stacy’s last visit, and initiate a pilot program for off grid solar entrepreneurship.

Ted in particular (with what help I could offer) had been pushing hard and fast on the latter goal for the better part of six months. We had made great strides but hit many roadblocks - in fact our solar products were still stuck in customs when we arrived in country. Nonetheless, we had come as far as we could from our computer screens and Skype, the only thing left to do was get on the ground and figure out if all the other off grid solar companies who refused to enter Angola thus far were right after all. This is where the horizon begins to look bright. Not only did we establish a handful of routes from 5.7 to 5.13c, we learned that the HALO Trust (Stacy’s former employer) and other similar organizations just passed the halfway mark to clearing the roughly 1,500 documented minefields across the country. And it appeared that by importing just 100 home solar systems we convinced the Energy Minister to order another 3,000 units as part of a broader market test.

It is far too early to say whether Angola will see the type of micro-grid solar explosion that is sweeping East Africa, but it’s heartening to know that a country with a traditional mono-economy of oil and gas is investigating these kinds of alternatives. Our partners at organizations like SolarAid and Elephant Energy have been eyeing Angola for years, perhaps our devil-may-care effort will remove the mystique and enable them to come in equipped for success. Fittingly, our own expedition was largely powered by the sun: equipped with a lightweight Goal Zero setup our climbing team was able to charge our drill to keep bolting new routes; power phones, cameras, and computers along the way; and hand out some Torch 250s to local kids who gave us a hand with our gear. Also along for the ride was a film crew from VICE Sports, who relied on more robust Goal Zero systems to charge drones, cameras, lights, and computers of their own every night.

The last two weeks were a blur of climbing rocks, spontaneous dance battles with the locals, and late night debates about the efficacy and approaches of bridging the energy gap. There were ups and downs, setbacks and triumphs. Just like everywhere in the world, we learned that at its most basic level Angola is full of good, decent people who see and strive for a better future for their country; except these people are starting the race 10 meters back and without the starting blocks available to many of us. While our impact may be minor in scale, we at the Honnold Foundation believe that only by refusing to accept current realities can we bridge those gaps. More than anything, we hope that you believe the same thing, too.
