Ladies Meeting will be in the Green Room

Happy Independence Day!June was a great month for Tangier with

the Shrine Bowl game at the start of the month. I want to thank the Shrine Bowl Inc. for the incredible job they did this year. The “Beyond the Field Experience” with the patients and players was a great success. Thanks to everyone who participated that day and over the weekend. It was a great time!

Don Streeter and his crew did a wonderful job on the Show & Shine the Sunday after the Shrine Bowl game. Congrats to Lady Connie for winning the Best Motorcycle Award. A Big Thanks to Joe Hodges and Jim Smith Jr. for organizing the Shrine Picnic and making it a day to remember. Also, the Shrine Soccer Classic was a success again this year thanks to Drew Rodehorst, Steve Spear, and the rest of their committee.

July is another busy month. The first week your Divan will travel to Tampa for the Imperial Session, which should be comfortable. In our absence, your Oriental Guide Allen Smith will be in charge and will lead the Ralston parade. He will finally be able to listen to the Shrine Band this year. It is a treat to hear them play.

July 14th will be the Stated Meeting. The dinner will be in the Main Room. Your Divan will be cooking and serving (so bring Rolaids). After the dinner, the ladies will meet in the green room and the men will have a regular meeting in the main room.

Because of remodeling in the kitchen, the LL and kitchen will be closed from July 10 through July 25.

July 29th is the Annual Pote’s Golf Tournament, with FSCAN, at Willow Lakes Golf Course in Bellevue. Please register at the office. It will be a fun day. Thanks to Illustrious Sir Gary Unger and Pete Larson for setting this up.

We need your CSSA reservations for Little Rock as soon as possible. It should be a great time. Also, remember if you have dates and/or articles you want to get in the Hot Sands, you need to get them in before the 10th of the month.

Continue to work hard on membership. We will have a Friendship Dinner at the Scottish Rite on July 28th at 6:00. Please bring prospective new members to see what our fraternity is all about. Remember it’s a great time to be a Shriner.

JULY 2016TANGIER “HOT SANDS”

Arab PatrolBy: Steve Bugajny, SecretaryGreetings one and all.Another beautiful spring day and plenty of

rain recently to keep the lawns green. However thankfully, not too much rain here to curtail the parade schedule.

By now the parade season is in full swing. Hopefully you will receive this issue of Hot Sands before the 4th Of July Parade in Ralston, but either way, a phenomenal parade nonetheless. One of the largest parades in the state and one of the most represented by our Tangier Shrine. If you would like to participate, join one of the clubs or units. We at Arab Patrol would welcome you gladly.

We continue to have our monthly meetings on the second Monday of the month at 7:00 pm downstairs in the Aladdin room. Please come check us out.

We continue to have a good year at the Arab Patrol – numerous dinners, cooking events, and social gatherings.

Have a safe summer.

ChantersBy: Bernie HauberLast month, the Chanters

performed a fund raising concert in Sioux Falls SD on Sunday, June 26th with El Riad Shrine Chanters (Sioux Falls) and three other select Midwest Shrine Association Chanter units. The freewill offering was donated to the Minneapolis Shrine Hospital. Through the appreciation of our audience, the Chanters hope to promote “…the purposes and welfare of Tangier and Masonry and to provide musical entertainment...” (from our charter).

The summer is still upon us, and the Chanters will probably forgo some practices, and our singing schedule is limited due to vacations and the like. When we resume practices, we will be making plans to sing for some local churches and begin preparations for our annual fund-raiser (the Rib Feed).

The Chanter practices will focus on preparation for our performances at area churches in August. Except for August 21 at Carson United Methodist Church (Carson IA), the dates that we plan to sing are still tentative but will be at least two other Sundays in August. The exact locations are still to be determined. This illustrates that there are often public and Masonic Family events, and if you want us to sing at such events, your request should be received early to verify our availability.

We can use your help in our musical promotion of Shriners philanthropy. If you are or if you know a noble (or a mason) with a love of music, an interest in musical fellowship, and any kind of singing voice, please contact any Chanter or just leave a message at the Shrine Center. That’s my update for July.

“As long as we live, there is never enough singing.” Martin Luther (16th-century German Cleric)

Arbor ShrineBy: Don LarsenThe Arbor Shrine Club has been busy with

parades in their area and the next parade will be at Syracuse, on Saturday, July 9th, with a 10:00 am lineup, then Saturday, July 30th, the Syracuse Otoe County Fair, with a 4:00 pm lineup. Arbor Shrine Club would like to invite any Divan, Noble, Unit, or Club to join them at these parades.

The Arbor Shrine Club Ladies hosted the Tangier Women’s Auxiliary in Nebraska City a couple of times and it was reported that they had an enjoyable and productive time, so they will be hosting them again in Nebraska City.

Arbor Shrine Club is a very active club and is always looking for new Members in the Nebraska City area. If interested just contact a member of Arbor Shine Club.

Boone & CrockettBy: Charlie Binge, SecretaryIt’s July – the Shrine Football

Bowl Game and the Soccer Classic are history. Both were a success and showcased our young Nebraska athletes. Thanks to all the units and clubs that made these functions possible.

July brings warm weather, continued parades, fireworks and many outdoor activities. The Boone and Crockett members are out fishing and reports are the fish are biting. The water is still high, but the members are filling their limits.

The B&C annual Walleye fish fry is coming up on Sunday July 31st. Keep the date open for some great eating and door prizes. Captains Tables will again be available. A shotgun will be given away to a Table Captain for every five Captains tables sold. Tickets are available from B&C members and from the Tangier Shrine Office.

The B&C Annual Gun Raffle was again a success. All 200 tickets were sold, monies turned in, and the 12 lucky winners drawn and notified. Thanks to Nick Mayfield , Mick Dudzinski, and all the ticket sellers for making this year a success.

All monies the Boone & Crockett Club raises from the Fish Fry, Wild Game Dinner, and Gun Raffle are used for the purchase of the vans we use to transport our patients to the Hospitals.

We are still looking for a couple of fisherman to join us on September 11-14 for a fishing trip to Sheboygan, WI. We are fishing later this year in hopes of catching the larger 20+ pound King Salmon.

The Boone & Crockett Club meets in the Shrine Center basement the first Thursday of the month at 6:30 pm for a short meeting and dinner afterward. Please feel free to come and join the brothers and see what we are all about.

THINK MEMBERSHIP – visit your Blue lodge and bring a Brother into the Shrine.

JULY 2016TANGIER “HOT SANDS”

Corvette ClubBy: Paul BohannonThe Corvette Club has been having a great

turnout for the parades. Thanks Keith Kortright for picking out all the great places to gather before the parades. We’re having a great time. We hope to see all of you at the parades and invite your families and friends to come out and enjoy the fun.

Plans are in the works for a summer picnic, our annual crab feed and other fun activities. It looks like we’re going to have a large group of Corvetttes going to the CSSA competition in Little Rock in August. It sounds like they have found us a great hotel close to a trolley line to take us around town. Looking forward to the trip.

Thanks to all that came out and support Shrine Hospital Benefit Days Car Show. Hope to see more of you out for the fall show.

Congratulations on the Corvette Club for meeting the membership challenge from the divan this year. That’s two years in a row. We’re going to see if we can double that challenge. It will be fantastic if all the Units and Clubs can reach their goals. Good Luck to All.

The Corvette Club is always looking for new members. You don’t have to own a Corvette to join. We have a lot of fun, and sometimes we need volunteers to drive a car in a parade or at a car show, or competition. Contact us today and start your adventure down Highway 2016 with us.

Jo De RaBy “Rib Eye” CostelloOur article for the July issue of the Hot

Sands has to be in by the 10th June . So by the time you read this, we will have driven the Divan in 4 Parades, Kearney, Blair, Papillion and Red Oak, which our Captain, Bob Krause encourages everyone to come to this one as their Oasis is one the best.

Special thanks to Gary Churchill and Ron Calvin for making the Kearney Shrine Bowl parade. Thank you guys. According to them, the free breakfast was the best part. What they will do for a free breakfast.

It’s great to welcome back Tom Upton and Alan Marsh. Hope you’re feeling better.

“WANTED: NOBLES THAT WANT TO HAVE FUN” Bob Krause is calling on Nobles that would like to be part of this club. We sure could use a couple of new guys to help us drive the Divan. In order to entice you to give us a try, our Captain has added dessert to the drink and meal offer! If you would like to join us, we’re trying a new place to meet this month, It’s at Brother Sebastian’s, located around 119th and Pacific. We meet the second Monday of each Month.

I remember the last thing my grandpa said to me before he kicked the bucket. He said, “How far do you think I can kick this bucket?”

Director’s StaffBy Maynard CrispinHello and Happy Summer fellow Shriners.

Everyone seems to be having a great time at the parades. Our attendance has been great so keep it up. Please give President Maynard a call if you are available to help with any of the parades. Come out and have some fun on a Saturday enjoying the parade and fun fellowship after the parade. Check your Hot Sands for the parade schedule and put the date on your calendar to attend. The Director Staff has a trailer that is pulled with the hearse so all ladies or fellow Shriners are welcome to ride on the trailer with us. Hope to see you there.

The Shrine picnic was a fun time had by all. We always enjoy the fun times at the Shrine and always look forward to seeing each of you. Please try to attend these fun fellowship events.

We have been having a great attendance for our monthly meetings so Keep It Up Directors and your Ladies. The ladies are ordering new Staffette tee shirts so if you are interested please see Nancy Crispin. The shirts are $20 each. Keep an eye out you will see some of the ladies wearing the shirts. If any other club is interested Synetta Crispin is designing and making the shirts so just contact Nancy for information.

Don’t forget the Tangier Shrine Lounge is a great place to meet friends, get together, chat, and have a drink. It is a fun place to go and hope to see you there soon. If you are interested in becoming a member of the Director Staff, contact any Director Staff Member or visit us on the fourth Monday of the month in the lower level of the Shrine at 7:00 pm. Our ladies meet at the same time. We would welcome you to join us.

Remember: “It’s A Great Day to be a Shriner”.

GreetersBy: Donald L. MastnyHello Greeters! It’s

parade season and if you would like to be in the parades you can ride the train, since we do not have our float anymore.

I understand George Lauritsen is out of the rehabilitation facility and is back home, Robert who is a waiter at Garden Cafe gave me this information and this is good news. We will not have any Greeter meetings in June, July, or August.

Mark your calenders for Sunday August 7th for our Greeters picnic. This year it will be at the West Omaha Masonic Center, three blocks North of Center on 135th Avenue. The picnic will be behind the building in the grass area from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. We ask that bring your own drinks, chairs, and a side dish. The Greeters will supply the main dish and its a good time for everyone to get together for the summer.

We will start having the Greeters meeting September 13th at the Garden Cafe, 108th and Center street in the Rockbrook Village Shopping Center. Don’t forget the next Tangier stated meeting is July 14th and we never have too many Greeters at the doors.

Keep Tangier and the Greeters strong, get new members.

By: Noble DonWhat a great year to be

a Shriner thus far. An inspirational Divan & many exceptional events already behind us with so many more to look forward to.

Hats off & our personal thanks to members Alex & Pam Mueller for again hosting the May 15th Mo-Ri Fish Fry. We’re proud of our fisherman & host. Need to also thank Charlie Fuglsang for keeping our parade car shined up & ready to go at a moment’s notice.

Mo-Ri is very proud to have been a part of the recent $2000 donation made to our Brother Nobles in the Boone & Crockett Club towards the upcoming purchase of a new Hospital Transportation Van. The majority of the donation was made possible from the donations forwarded to the Club after Past President Richard Japp’s passing. One of Richard’s favorite pastime was to help drive our patients to the hospitals.

One last thank you and that goes out to Noble Jim Ryan for helping to arrange the location & donate towards Mo-Ri hosting the Oasis following the Blair Parade on 6/11. It was also a pleasure working with Steve Cook who is actually the main Go-To-Guy at the Blair Marina and a Nebraska Shrine Bowl player from Blair on the 1994 squad.

Hillbilly News Keystone KopsBy: Captain Travis “Jinxie” DrewsHappy Independence Day to all and God

bless our great nation and God bless those that have and still defend it. Speaking of which, back in May the Kops visited the Eastern Nebraska Veterans Home. We met with and brightened the day of over 96% of the heroes and spouses of heroes who reside there. It was an honor to be there! We will be there again next year.

Thanks to all who have helped out and represented the Kops at the Shrine Bowl and Shrine Hospital Benefit Show and Shine!

Parades are in full swing and we are ready to debut the New Paddy Wagon. It’s bigger, longer, wider, taller, safer, and can handle all of us. Are you excited yet? There is still much to be done. In the years to come it will be the duty of the unit to improve upon or add to this fine vehicle. In the mean time we all must pitch in together to prep the new paddy wagon for parades. Contact Chief if you can do so.

The Kops will be holding a Christmas in July fundraiser on July 23rd at Tangier. All Kops are needed to make this fundraiser work. Join us in the fun, fellowship, great food, and drink. This party is for adults only. Rumor has is it that Santa and his elves will be there when they should be on vacation and they may have some coal for some naughty Nobles and Ladies.

Happy anniversary to Officer Gino and Haley Dawson. Happy Birthday to Past Chief Gene “Shave” Holman, Past Chief Darwin “I didn’t do it” Baker, and Kutie Kim Burnham.

This month’s edition of remember your first pie is from Past Chief David “Double D” Shaw. He got his 16 years ago at circus roughly the same time as Past Chief Tyler “Boom-Boom” Goodman. The whipped cream was so thick it was almost impossible to see his assailant. [Editor’s note: Since Noble Shaw has only been in the unit for 12 years, it looks like Jinxie broke the article.]

A friendly reminder to all: Please keep a Shrine Hospital referral card in your wallet or purse. You may never know when you run into a family that has a child that needs the care that only Shriners can offer from our wonderful Hospitals.

Keep thinking Membership and support your Blue Lodge, Scottish, and York Rites.

Remember if it’s not broken don’t fix it! If it’s broke…..I’m sorry.

Pickup Truck ClubBy: Will WhitneyCome on down and join in on the fun. It

is getting hot and summer is upon us so turn on the air in your truck and come on and be with us in the parades. All you have to do is come to our meeting at the Shrine Center by the game room on the third Wednesday of each month to become a member.

JULY 2016TANGIER “HOT SANDS”

By: Jan MooreHi everyone, what a bright shiny

morning. I hope that you are staying cool and hydrated during this very hot time.

The Auxiliary continues to meet and prepare items for sale. We sell at each Temple meeting which is the second Thursday of each month. We try to have things that are seasonal, so that you can use them immediately. Our main event of course is the luncheon/bazaar/style show in October. This is the event that nets us the most money during the year.

When we attended the general meeting in Minneapolis, we learned that many of the groups that meet are as small as we are. They sell nuts, have dances, have craft sales, and many other events. One group meets in a town that does not have a Shrine Center, but is affiliated with a center in another town. They really work hard. Remember, Minneapolis is the only hospital that has an Auxiliary. If you have memorial money that you really don’t know what to do with, the Auxiliary is a good place. Every bit of the money goes directly to Minneapolis.

Pop tabs are still needed. Pop tabs/beer tabs, etc. are used to help finance the buying of new wheelchairs and the refurbishing of the older chairs. The kids outgrow chairs or just plain use them up.

If you are traveling this summer be safe and remember to be kind to one another.

Talk to you next month, when this article might just be a bit bigger.

Women’s Auxiliary

Mobile NoblesBy: Dave StolpWe are certainly well prepared to handle

the 100 degree heat in July as we have already experienced it in June. Maybe winter will begin in September.

We are pleased to report that we had a full club car for the La Vista parade. There was not one empty seat. Thanks to all for a great turn out.

Tickets are still available for our Lifetime Membership to Tangier raffle. The top prize is the Life Time Membership or a cash equivalent of $2,150. There are also three prizes of $100. Only 250 tickets will be sold. Please contact your favorite Mobile Noble to purchase.

We are currently building a “Little Brother” to “Old 357”. Plans are to have 10 individual cars.

“Old 357” is running well but we are experiencing problems with our generator that powers the air conditioning for the club car. We may miss a parade or two due to the extreme heat.

Everyone who rode the train to Kearney had a fun time in spite of the generator “Gremlin”. We hope to have this problem solved soon.

Well, I am running low on steam in my boiler. See you down the tracks.

Motor ABy: Larry HulsebusBattling inclement w e a t h e r

conditions, the mighty small cars of Motor “A” made their first parade of 2016 at Florence. This is the longest parade route for the high powered machines, but Roger, Al, and I made it with no problems, just brakes that were a little hot at the end! We always appreciate a cleanup crew that follows the horses in the parade route, it makes for one less obstacle when we perform our strategic routines.

At the LaVista Parade, six little cars attended and one of our members, not mentioning any names (Dick), didn’t like a few raindrops falling on his Little ‘57, so he tried to drive under cover with the “big boys”, the Corvettes. Maybe it was the raindrops in his eyes, or possibly a slight loss of memory that made him think he was driving his Corvette!

Peg and I hosted the June Motor “A” meeting at our house and I want to thank Illustrious Charlie Marchand and Lady Connie for coming and enjoying a few laughs with us. Charlie and Connie will always be a part of Motor “A” and will always be welcome at any of our events. I don’t know if I was having a “Senior Moment”, or if I had too many Bud Lights, but I forgot where the Blair Parade was – hello! So remember guys if I’m not at Blair – come look for me, I might be in Papillion!

“Keep your gas tanks full and remember to turn the key.”

Motor BBy: Chuck ClineJune has been a busy

month for Motor B. Parade season is in full swing, the weather has finally warmed up and every day is a great day for a ride. The Pioneer Village trip was a fun and enjoyable ride with members and friends. Thank You Ed for planning this event. Nothing starts a trip better than a breakfast at Burger King in Wahoo! More rides to be planned in the future.

Our monthly dinner rides this time of year are always great. We have completed two and have planned the third meeting ride for July 11th to Round The Bend Steak house in Ashland NE. I would like to invite anyone with an interest in motorcycles or who ride motorcycles to come out and join us for one of our dinner rides. We have all types of bikes in our unit (owning a Harley is not required) We meet at Tangier at 5:30 pm and depart at 5:45 pm, or meet us at the restaurant at 6:30 if you don’t ride.

Anyone interested in joining a unit that likes to ride motorcycles, and sell Christmas Trees, yes I said Christmas trees in July. Selling Christmas Trees is our annual fund raising event which we start planning now. More on that in the future. Ask any member of Motor B about the unit for details.

That being said please ride safe and watch out for motorcycles.

Daughtersof the Nile

By Queen Cheryl ElliottIn an earlier edition of

my newsletter, I had asked if anyone knew how many Past Supreme Queens had been members of our temple. There were two. They were Ruth C. Denton serving in 1946-47 and Fay H. Andrews in 1970-71. They were honored at a very moving Memorial Service, at Supreme Session in Indianapolis, Indiana this June. We had 17 of our members that were able to attend this year and have a very fun time.

Our members are now relaxing and enjoying some other Nile summer events. Our new Social Club, with Princess Erin Marr as the Chair person, have had these events in June: a Scentsy Warmer coloring party and then the River City Star Riverboat Cruise on June 25th. The next event will be Family Stormchasers Baseball Game on July 30th at 7:05 pm. For more information, please contact me or visit our Facebook page. Any Nile member and guests are welcome to any of these events.

We will start up our monthly sessions on the first Thursday in August. We will meet on the 4th. Dinner will be at 5:30 pm and served by the Pageantry and Dancers Unit. The Session will start at 6:15 pm. Our quarterly Nile Newsletter will be mailed out before that Session to give more information. If you do not receive one, come to the Session to pick one up or contact your Queen or Princess Recorder to make sure your mailing information is correct on our records.

Don’t forget about our Kid’s Carnival on August 14th at the Shrine Center. We need your help and attendance. We will also be joined by some of the Tangier Shrine units and Masonic lodges. Many volunteers are needed to help promote community awareness for Daughters of the Nile and what we all do to help the Shriners Hospitals for Children.

We welcomed five new princesses from our May Ceremonial, and we want to welcome more. Remember “Membership begins with ME”. Submit a “Proposal For Membership” form that can be downloaded from www.daughersofthenile.com. This is for any lady related to a Mason that you know would enjoy our wonderful organization and love helping the Shriners Hospitals for Children.

“We have fun, so the kids can run.”

Due to remodeling

By: Maxine Lorraine Powers Oh! Happy Day, a three day weekend for many workers this month. The 4th of July, Independence Day, is celebrated in many enjoyable ways. However, let us not forget to take a few moments to remember the utmost importance of the day. The Declaration of Independence from the United Kingdom of Great Britain was signed on July 4th, 1776. The American Revolutionary War commenced and did not end until the last battle at Yorktown, Virginia in October 1781. Golden Girls will meet on Tuesday, July 12. Same time (12-noon) and place – lower level (Oasis room) of the Shrine Center. Jeane Morgan will serve as hostess. Our July birthday ladies are Ramona Artherton, our president, and Donna Walter. Happy, happy birthday ladies. You are wished many more. As I write this article in early June, we are experiencing / tolerating 90 degree weather. It appears we are in for a very hot summer. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could can some of this weather for use next winter? Stay well and count your blessings. Until next month.
