The Story of Abraham
• Abram sought to live righteously among the wicked
• “My fathers, having turned from their righteousness, and from the holy commandment with the Lord their God had given unto them” (Abraham 1:5)
• “Therefore they turned their hearts to the sacrifice of the heathen in offering up their children unto these dumb idols” (Abraham 1:7)
• “having been myself a follower of righteousness, desiring also to be one who possessed great knowledge, and to be a greater follower of righteousness … and to keep the commandments of God” (Abraham 1:2)

The Plot Thickens
• Abram’s other desire• “desiring … to be a father of many
nations” (Abraham 1:2)• “And Abram said (unto the Lord),
Behold, to me thou hast given no seed” (Genesis 15:3)
• “and I, Abraham, was sixty and two years old” (Abraham 2:13)
• “and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.” (Genesis 18:11)

The Covenant or How God Answered Abram’s
Prayers
• 1) Move (Abraham 2:6; Genesis 12:1)• 2) Change your names from Abram to
Abraham and Sarai to Sarah (Genesis 17:5; 17:15)
• 3) “I (God) will make thee exceedingly fruitful” (Genesis 17:6)
• Just a reminder - “Abraham, was sixty and two years old when I departed out of Haran.” (Abraham 2:14)

The Lord’s Timing
• Abraham is 62 when he is promised posterity
• From Abraham’s perspective, how might that cause spiritual conflict, before and after the promise?
• Abraham is 66 when Ismael is born of Hagar (Genesis 16:16)
• Abraham and Sarah are told that the covenant will come through Sarah
• From Abraham and Sarah’s perspective, how might that cause spiritual conflict?
• Abraham is 99, and Sarah is 90. Still no posterity.
Holy Visitors
• Three Holy men visit Abraham, who is 99 years old
• “And they said unto him, Where is Sarah thy wife? And he said, Behold, in the tent.”
• And he said, I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son.” (Genesis 18:9-10)

Isaac
• “For Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.”

• “And Abraham was an hundred years old, when his son Isaac was born unto him.” (Genesis 21:2-3;5)
Sarah Acknowledges the Miracle
• “And Sarah said, God hath made me to laugh (rejoice), so that all that hear will laugh (rejoice) with me.”
• And she said, Who would have said unto Abraham, that Sarah should have given children to suck? For I have born him a son in his old age.” (Genesis 20:6-7)
Hagar and Ismael• “Sarah saw the son of Hagar the
Egyptian, which she had born Abraham, mocking.” (Genesis 21:9)

location at 62• Live in a tent• Finally have child at 66, by a
handmaid, which creates jealousy and strife in the home
• Lord says that child is not the covenant child
• Wait 33 more years for covenant child to be born
• Get to kick out one of your children• Can we liken this to ourselves?• Can we choose to be more grateful for
blessings?
What does the Lord now require of
Abraham?
• “Take now they son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I tell thee of.” (Genesis 22:2)

Why did the Lord ask Abraham to do what seemed a wicked act?
President Hugh B. Brown said that God commanded Abraham to
sacrifice Isaac because “Abraham needed to learn something about
Abraham” (in Truman G. Madsen, The Highest in Us [1978], 49).
