    Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women Kairos #50 It was an amazing journey – Kairos #50 at Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women Wetumpka, AL. I was blessed to be the Leader of this Weekend and I give God all the glory for all of the wonderful things that hap-pened. It started with our first Team meeting on August 11, 2012. This was the most amazing group of ladies, and men also, who served on the Outside sup-port Team to cook meals and help with the agape bags. There was a feeling of love among this group, most whom did not even know each other but by the time we had our fourth Team meet-ing, we were certainly one body in Christ – ready to be His hands and feet. When I say this group was in unity, that does not even do them justice. There simply are no words to explain each member separately. There was so much love be-stowed upon us from my church, Rainbow City First United Methodist. The Team members were served breakfast and lunch by members of this sweet church at every Team meeting. Also, my pastor allowed us to give a short talk about the upcoming Weekend at Tutwiler prison. There was green agape given in the offering plate each week for almost two months and when it

    came time for us to go, there were many prayers strips, cookies and saltines for us to take to the ladies in white. When we arrived at the prison all of the Team members were finger-printed. This was the first time our Women’s Kairos Team had to go through this process, taking almost three hours, but my Team never be-came discouraged. When we finally got to the chapel, there was no air for the entire Week-end. It was 89° in that chapel but the Team had to die to self and do what we had come there for and that was to minister to the ladies in white. It seemed as though God had selected the right lady for every talk and meditation. These were some of the most wonder-ful, heartfelt talks that I have ever heard. The music Team, whom had never met each other before, were just beyond expla-nation. We laughed a lot, we certainly cried a lot, lives were changed and God was in control of the entire Weekend. On Sunday night at closing, as I was about to ask the Music Team to forward to sing our final song, Surely the Presence of the Lord is in the Place, a young lady in white who had been on the Weekend asked me

    action! I intend to journal every-thing I can remember about the great Weekend at Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women”. Another one of my new Team members had to say, “Kairos was a life changing experience. It is very hard to describe the presence of the Holy Spirit and how He tears down walls, re-moves bitterness, anger, resent-ment, disappointment, un-forgiveness, loneliness, broken-ness and replaces it with joy, love, peace, happiness, self-respect and gives them a family on the inside and outside of the prison for support and to carry the message of Jesus to the other inmates. It is very powerful!”

    The quote of the Weekend that made me lose it was, “This is the first Weekend of my life that I do not feel judged by man.” At the closing, the entire group of the women in white prayed a powerful prayer for the Team members for filling us back up, sending angels to sur-round us and protect us and to rebuild our relationships at home while we were gone with family and work and to keep us safe on our journey home. This has been the greatest bless-ing of my life – hands down! I highly recommend this ministry as they have stolen my heart. By Evelyn Muskett #50 Weekend Leader

    if she could pray. “Certainly you can” I told her. Well, I wish I could relive those few minutes. She asked all of the Team mem-bers to sit down and all of the ladies in white to stand up. There were many veteran Kairos ladies in the white at the closing, plus the thirty that had just gradu-ated Kairos. This young lady prayed a prayer that had my Team crying out loud. It was the most beautiful thing that I have ever heard. She prayed for God to fill the Team back up, to bless our fami-lies that we had left behind, to bless our finances, to bless us for so many more things - I cannot remember them all. Every lady in white had their arms in the air pointing over the heads of the members of Kairos #50 Team. Talk about an ending! I have never experienced anything like this in all my years of serving on Kairos Teams. This is what my pastor, who was on the Team, had to say, “I have-n’t yet found the words to ex-press the significance of this past Weekend in my own life. All I know right now is that I’m a changed person and I have a great need to tell you that I was deeply moved to watch each of you interact with the ladies in white. I was so proud of you pastor and I just wished the rest of the con-gregation could have seen you in

    KAIROS

    A universal message of unconditional love that grows as time is recycled;

    cleansing the universe, turning littered minutes into shining, rising hours; producing unselfish love;

    adding hours to days, weeks to months, years to centuries.

    Equaling inconceivable and impeccable; exponentially increasing energy that is the message of love;

    which over the burning embers of time, is not blown out; but spreads in the flammable fields of the soul and wildfire of eternal love

    I have heard the talk many times before at KI closings what a great opportunity for the men in white to share their Kairos experience with a loved one on the outside. This time it was different. I was listening to this message at a Kairos Inside team meet-ing in August of 2011. Some-thing in my spirit lifted me. The lady sitting to the left seemed to feel the same spirit. I said, "If you want to get KO started in East Texas I believe I am the one to help YOU." Though I heard nothing from her for the next two weeks God had my attention. I wres-tled with Him for a week, ar-guing that I couldn’t be the one to start it. I am “too busy” I protested. As audibly as ever God spoke back to me saying “ you are not going to do it, I will do it through you!” The peace that surpasses all of understanding came over me. “Okay Lord I will come along side of You and start Your Kairos Outside in East Texas. The rest is one God moment after another. It came together September 21-23, 2012 when we in Tyler, TX had our first weekend. Green Acres Baptist Church Retreat Center donated their

    beautiful location at no cost. When I started to talk about be-ginning Kairos Outside, it was clear God had already spoken to the hearts of many other women. They stepped forward wanting to serve in the ministry. The Texas State Chapter New Starts Committee Chair said we should not begin any earlier than 18 months from the time our pro-posal was accepted. However God had given me the Septem-ber date when Green Acres do-nated the Retreat Center for our use. Many in the community wanted to be involved. Thirty days out there were 39 confirmed registrations. Our actual weekend guests numbered 22. WHAT AN AWESOME, LIFE GIVING, INSPIRING WEEKEND. Someone com-mented that putting on a Week-end was like giving birth. The guests bonded on Friday evening. The entire team was a servant beyond what was ex-pected. We had fun theme meals, agape was abundant, and the flowers for Flowers at Dawn were a donation. A breathtaking KO cross was made by a KI volunteer as well as the table nameplates and a Christ chair sign. These items are now a permanent item for

    Kairos Outside East Texas. The talks were outstanding, the prayer chain, shields and agape wrapped the room many times over. The Closing was awesome with many of the guests sharing the impact of the weekend. Sev-eral want to return as team mem-bers and some want other family members to experience the week-end. The guests with the help of sever-al team members are committed to forming support groups in their areas. The Council plans to have quarterly reunions so everyone can stay in touch. Thanks to all for the prayers and support for our first Weekend. Our next weekend is May 3-5, 2013. We truly marvel at the GOOD-NESS OF GOD Sandee Perdue Leader

    WHO WE ARE

    In the Mailbag Dear Kairos:

    You saved my son - thank God for you and your special people. I have prayed for years that he would find God and have peace. Dear Sisters-in-Christ... I wanted to tell you how much the 3-day course meant to a dear friend of mine, currently serving her sentence at Cambridge Springs. My husband and I visited with her on Monday the day after she and others 'graduated' from the class) and I've never seen her more filled with joy, peace, assurance of God's love for her, and hope for whatever the future brings. She and I have been writing, for the most part, since she's been in prison. And, she's been reading the Bible and doing various Bible studies and reading other Christian books -- particularly the last several years. But love broke through last weekend during the Kairos Weekend, and she is experiencing the love of Jesus and the peace and joy of knowing Him in a whole new way. She showed us the cross necklace and was so happy to have received it. She is also excited that Kairos comes in once a month and is planning to sign up for that. She was very touched by the love and encouragement of each of the volunteers. You were 'His hands,' 'His voice of encouragement', 'His listening ear' to my friend and I'm sure to every woman in those sessions. She also expressed that she doesn't feel "alone" anymore. I praise God for the wonderful ministry of Kairos! I just wanted to encourage you by saying the work you're doing is having a tremendous impact on women like my precious friend! Thank you so much for giving of your time, energy, and resources. But mostly, thank you for demon-strating the love of Jesus (in human bodies!) to women who are broken and hurting. In His Love, Ann

    MEN’S INSIDE MINISTRY

    Hello, my friends. The Christ-mas holidays are upon us and we’re fixing to finish another year of this wonderful ministry. I’m passing on to you what was written in the Leader’s Report in a recent EZRA I received just a few weeks ago. This one is kind of special because it comes from Union Correctional near Jack-sonville, where Kairos started 36 years ago. But I need to give you a little background on UCI #73 so you will be fully in-formed as to what occurred there this fall. So get yourself a good hot cup of coffee and read this with great interest and an open mind. UCI, the flagship of Kairos, is one of two institutions in the states that have been allowed to conduct the Weekend using 8 Family Tables with the possibil-ity of a 9th Qualifying Table for new volunteers. They could do this because of the large size of the room. Add to this that be-cause of UCI’s success, Kairos has expanded in the greater Jacksonville, FL area into sever-al institutions. While that is wonderful news, it makes re-cruiting in Area 3 harder and harder. And so, when it came time for UCI #73 to begin Team Formation, the chosen Weekend Leader was facing a recruiting problem. To make matters worse, the WL’s wife became extremely ill and he had to drop off the Team just prior to the 1st team meeting. The Observing Leader, Phil Smith, who had

    been to AKT recently, was chosen by the Ad Council to be the new WL. So far, everything has been “by the book”; but let me first tell you a little about Phil. Phil is a retired fire fighter who underwent medi-cal retirement because he rushed into a burn-ing building to save a child; and in the pro-cess, he lost about 50% of his lung capacity due to the extreme heat and smoke. Now, my friends, that fits the defini-tion of a hero. But his love of God and respect for the gift that God gave us in Kairos caused him to show another phase of his heroism when he was faced with the situation at UCI…he had only 35 men on the team. So after long efforts in recruit-ing, he went to the first team meeting, still with only 35 on the team. From what he learned at the AKT, he made the deci-sion to cut the number of Family Tables to 5 so that the inmates could enjoy the attention they were going to receive from the 1-on-1 hosting. Phil was con-fronted with several challenges to his leadership from team members who were upset that UCI was not going to have 8 Family Tables, but he stuck with his conviction. I want you to read the rest of this story in Phil’s words as he

    wrote in the Leader’s Report in EZRA: It is with great pleasure to sub-mit this report with great hon-or. Kairos 73 was a great suc-cess and I am pleased to an-nounce that the goals that were set were made in full. As you know the team was met with many obstacles. Our original Team Leader, James Pena, had to withdraw from the leadership role as the team leader do to family health issues and it was decided for me to become the Team Leader. The support I got was so over-whelming. I watched as God took our Team and formed it into a master- piece. I was faced with many decisions to make and with the help of my Ad Council Chair, Bob Wilmot and Advising Leader, Jack Tarr, my head Clergy, Bobby Fallin, and with the help of Kairos Wisdom from Ezra, the

    decisions I made were kept and followed through. This Team was kept in between the river banks of Kairos procedures as it should. One of the decisions that had to be made, and after seeing it hap-pen, I have to say it was the best thing in my opinion that we could ever had done. In the past at UCI we were able to go in and do a 8 table setting with a 9th table for new volunteers. Being faced with other Teams being formed at other institutions, we were kept with a 5 Family Table setting. This opened a door of opportunities that we were not able to do on previous Kairos teams! With this in mind, we were able to divide our meeting room into two sections. We had a community room and a chapel. This showed our participants a true meaning of chapel instead of just turning a poster board around showing we were in chapel like before. In the past with so many people, the room setting would not allow us to set up like we were able to do so with Kairos 73. I, along with many others, felt this showed a more personal effect to the par-ticipants, not only by showing a separation of chapel and com-munity settings, but also we found that more time was spent on what the Kairos program was designed to be done. There was no rushing of our time, we were able to have longer breaks which allowed more time to get to know the participants and show them the love and attention they need-ed, to listen longer to them, and to have the opportunities to wit-

    ness to them as well. All in all we were able to give our Residents more one-on-one time and it also gave them more time to partake longer in things like open mike, and share of their poster times, too. Having experienced Kairos at UCI with both settings, I know for me personally and seeing how things went, that a 5 table setting is more efficient and gave the op-portunity to present Kairos at its best, from the beginning to the end. It would be my recommen-dation that the Ad Council review this and take this under consider-ation to follow suit. Thirty participants were repre-sented at Kairos 73 and as stated before, it was so wonderful to see our Lord work with the team. Many men found salvation and were brought to Christ. Many came to a true understanding that there is hope inside a prison set-ting and the there is a true un-conditional love out there through Christ. All learned that prayer and share works! I do not know of one participant that did not partake in the program. All showed great signs of improve-ment and found new friends they never had. God was in control throughout the whole weekend and not only moved on the partic-ipants, but also on volunteers, too. How beautiful it was to be able to be a part of this and know that each and every one of us let God lead us as a team that united as one and stayed in between the riverbanks of Kairos. Challenges came but I know God was in control and as the Leader of Kairos 73, I must say it just

    could not have been any better. I thank all who supported me and the Team. There was no “I” pm tjos Team! ent in as a Team and came out as a Team. This was a Team that God showed that, through Him, all things are possible. Kairos 73 was a great success. Sincerely, Phil Smith I want to add that within 30 minutes of reading Phil’s EZ-RA report, I received 4 addi-tional e-mails from members of the UCI #73 team. In summary of all 4, they basically said, “I went into UCI 73 with negative feelings about not doing an 8-table Weekend, but boy was I wrong. I’ve never seen any-thing like this. It was an in-credible Weekend. We did not lose an inmate, and we had more time to spend with them, to sing songs with them, to wit-ness to them than ever before. I’m going to the next Ad Coun-cil meeting with the pledge that I will work my tail off to get enough team members to have 8 Family tables. But if some-thing like this ever happens again, I will support cutting of the number of Tables to fit the number of inmates.” Go grab another cup of coffee and ponder this and pray about it. And we’ll visit about it whenever we find the time. Until next time…

    Often, people who have lost a loved one ask that a trib-ute gift be made to their favorite charity in lieu of flowers. A memorial contribution to Kairos Prison

    Ministry pays thoughtful tribute to the memory of your loved one. Donations will support sharing Christ’s love

    with the incarcerated.

    A memorial letter will be sent to the family of the be-reaved, along with the name (s) of the donors. The

    amount of the gift will not be disclosed.

    Donors will receive a letter from Kairos Prison Ministry for their tax-exempt contribution.

    Prison ministry was not a calling John Carroll Catholic High School Librarian Jenny Walker expected. Walker’s father owned his own drugstore, facing break-ins and robberies, sometimes even at gunpoint. “I developed a harsh view of criminals and had no interest in helping them,” Walker says. “I had no sympathy for criminals and never thought about prison ministry.” After several years, though, God changed Walker’s harsh view on the incarcerated when she be-came acquainted with the Kairos Prison Ministry. Kairos, meaning “God’s Special Time,” is a minis-try focused specifically on bring-ing Christianity directly to pris-ons and to those affected by any-one who has been incarcerated. It has 36,000 volunteers dedicating over three million service hours every year in over four hundred institutions, and in 2000 Walker found herself one of them. At that time, Walker met a few people who were active in the ministry. At first she simply agreed to be a part of prayer vig-ils and even baked cookies for the inmates. Still, she never felt the call to minister within the pris-ons. Two years later, however, Walker was asked to serve on a Kairos team for Tutwiler prison; this time she said yes. The process of becoming a team member was not simple. Walker was required to read and study a

    lengthy manual, collect signa-tures and letters, create a paper chain, enlist volunteers, collect donations, and obtain thirty-six hours of training. And Walker had her own set of concerns. “I was anxious that I might make mistakes--” Walker admits, “--that I might let a judgmental attitude stifle the work of the Holy Spirit.” But Walker had nothing to be anxious about. Walker says that God’s love flowed through her as she bonded with the women of Tut-wiler Prison. Walker prayed with the women, holding their hands and embracing them with acceptance and love. “I

    experienced God’s power at work as I never had before,” Walker shares. “Not just in the lives of the prison residents, but in my own life as well.” Today, ten years later, Walker not only remains an active vol-unteer in Kairos Prison Ministry but also Kairos Outside, a pro-gram dedicated to female mem-bers and friends of the incarcer-ated. She is also currently the Secretary for the Alabama Kairos State Committee.

Advanced Kairos Training gives the what, who and why of the Kairos Inside ministry. Kairos policy requires that all weekend leaders must have attended AKT-Inside prior to leading a Weekend.

    Principle Statements Concerning AKT Expenses 1. All AKTs are essentially free to any and all attendees. 2. However, paying the expenses of an attendee for AKT should be borne by the sponsoring Advisory Council (or State Chapter Committee in certain hardship cases), just as it is done in meeting other Weekend expenses. 3. This means that all Advisory Councils should be budgeting, not only for the expense of conducting Weekends, but also for any AKT expenses deemed necessary for future Weekend Leaders or other at-tendees that the Advisory Council wants to attend. 4. If an attendee wishes to make a personal gift to help defray the costs of attending an AKT, he/she should make their donation directly to his/her sponsoring Advisory Council, and NOT to the State hosting the AKT.

    The Advisory Council will make the payment to the hosting State, as in 2. above. Since an attendee’s gift to the Advisory Council is a donation, it is subject to an affiliation fee due from the Advisory Council or State.

  • WHO WE ARE

    Page 16/Winter 2012, God’s Special Time

    Leaders from more than fifty denominations attend the Rob-ert E. Webber Institute for Wor-ship Studies (IWS) and take courses rooted in the biblical narrative, drawing on the rich treasures of Christian history, and committed to glorifying God in multiple cultural con-texts. Students study with a su-perior faculty of worship schol-ars, who also hold full-time po-sitions in colleges, seminaries and/or churches. Many gradu-ates participate in the Kairos Prison Ministry, and also serve as music ministers, worship leaders and pastors.

    Offering both the Master of Worship Studies and the Doctor of Worship Studies degrees, IWS combines distance education with on-campus classes. One week on-campus intensives for each course are held twice each year (January and June) at the Jacksonville campus, but most of the work is accomplished at home and forwarded to professors. A doctorate can be completed in three years and a Masters in two years. The IWS education is de-signed to fit the student’s schedule and budget. The result is an edu-cation that prepares Christian leaders to participate more effec-

    tively and spiritually in Kairos and other Christian ministries. IWS holds accredited status with the Commission on Accredi-tation of the Association for Bib-lical Higher Education, a USDE and CHEA authorized accredit-ing association. Interested Kairos volunteers are invited to visit the website at www.iws.edu, or e-mail [email protected], or call 1-800-282-2077. You may also contact Da-vid Garmus, who is currently a doctoral student as well as Vice Chair of Long Range Planning on the Kairos Board of Directors.
