They had to recognize his oneness with the Father and become witnesses to this mystery. “One might say they had to pass from outward to inward communion with Jesus.” (Jesus of Nazareth. Joseph Ratzinger. Benedict XVI). Now the time had come for the twelve to go forth and bring the good news to all people. The good news which Jesus proclaimed set the world on its head. Good news was the term used by a messenger of the emperor to proclaim salvation. Jesus was setting himself up against the powers of the world. Jesus infuriated the religious authorities because he claimed that the words of Isaiah were being fulfilled in him. Jesus proclaimed that God is on the side of the oppressed, the poor, those who suffered injustice. Many people put emphasis on the signs that will follow those who speak in the name of Jesus. They forget what must happen before these signs appear: speaking against injustice, speaking for the defenceless, creating God’s kingdom of peace and inclusion here and now as much as possible, and a willingness to suffer rejection. These are the tell-tale signs of those who take up the mission of Jesus. With the Ascension, the missionary era of the early Church began and it will not end until Jesus, who ascended, returns. Setting the World On Its Head In today’s Gospel, there is an echo of an earlier story, that of Jesus choosing the twelve and making them “fishers of men.” (Matthew 4:18) Before they could become fishers of men, however, they had to stay with Jesus and learn from him. The Ascension of the Lord

NEXT SUNDAY: “HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHURCH”: A RED DAY!! The Feast of PENTECOST (the 50th day after Easter Sunday) is the feast of the gift of Jesus’ Spirit coming upon his followers. It is based upon the Jewish feast which commemorates Moses receiving to the 10 commandments. For the followers of Jesus Pentecost celebrates not only commandments of old but also the giving in a special way of the Holy Spirit who dwells within us – with the new commandment of Jesus: “Love one another”! SO, it is the birthday of the Church!

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PARISH HEALTH COUNCIL Thank you to the women and men who attended the CPR-AED Training last weekend. We now have 21 parishioners who are full trained in both CPR and the use of our Defibrillator unit, located at the entrance of the church. These parishioners attend both masses on the weekend, so we have good coverage in the event that there is a medical emergency. Thank you for your commitment.

CATHOLIC WOMEN’S LEAGUE – “FOR GOD AND CANADA”

Our sincere thanks to everyone who helped make the opening mass and reception of our CWL Diocesan Convention such a success: those who helped decorate the church and hall, those who brought some baking, those who prepared the hall and cleaned up afterwards.

You are appreciated and we are thankful for your participation. We couldn’t have done it without all your help. Next year’s CWL Diocesan Convention will be held in Sault Ste Marie, April 26-28.

The CWL will be having a YARD SALE in the church hall on Saturday, June 9, 2018. Donations can be dropped off in the church breezeway Tuesday to Friday of that week between 9am-12 & 1-4pm.

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY! A PRAYER FOR MOTHERS All-loving God, we give you thanks and praise for mothers young and old. We pray for young mothers, who give life and count toes and tend to our every need; May they be blessed with patience and tenderness to care for their families and themselves with great joy. We pray for our own mothers who have nurtured and cared for us; May they continue to guide us in strong and gentle ways. We remember mothers who are separated from their children because of war, poverty, or conflict; May they feel the loving embrace

of our God who wipes every tear away. We pray for women who are not mothers but still love and shape us with motherly care and compassion. We remember mothers, grandmothers, and great-grandmothers who are no longer with us but who live forever in our memory and nourish us with their love. Amen.

SO LONG! IT’S BEEN GOOD TO KNOW YOU!!!

St. Patrick’s Parish 39 Walford Road. Sudbury, On P3E 2H2

Dear Fr. Jim and Members of the Finance Committee, Please accept this letter as my formal resignation from the Pastoral Secretary position at St. Patrick’s effective May 17th, 2018. This was not an easy decision. I have been approached and offered a position that is located in Garson and after much discussion with my husband and taking time to evaluate, we feel that this new opportunity would be better suited for not only me but for my family as well.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here at St. Patrick’s and wish you all well in the future. Regards,

Cynthia Mack __________________________________________________________________

Dear Cynthia, I am still in disbelief and shock that you are leaving us. The rest of the staff are in that same frame of mind. You have been a breath of fresh air since you came on board on a temporary basis and then just recently to welcome you as permanent Secretary. It has been a very wonderful time of your presence among us. You have been accepted and loved by many parishioners who came daily to the office. Fr. Jim

Dear Father Jim, Thank you so much for your email. I appreciate your kind words, they mean so much to me. I am still in shock as well as I was not expecting to have to make a decision like this as I was not looking for work and this opportunity presented itself to me. I want you to know it was tough but in the long run it’s better suited for my family with less commuting time, closer to the kids schools and activities and there is room for advancement. As for attending Mass, I will be there.

Regards, Cynthia

I speak on behalf of many parishioners who have come to know and love Cynthia, she was always hospitable and responsive to the needs of many parishioners coming daily to the Parish office. On your behalf I wish her and her family peace and joy in her new work environment in Garson. A public reception for her will take place on Sunday, June 10th after the 10am Mass. I do hope all would join in the parish hall to say farewell to Cynthia and to wish her well. In the Lord we serve,
