Most of us know that Sunday is the most segregated day of the week. But what you may

not know is that it is also the most violent day of week according to the experts. Do-

mestic violence is a big part of the problem. Our Bishop is asking all North Texas United

Methodists, lay and clergy, young and old to come together to say no to domestic vio-

lence. Domestic violence is something we cannot ignore. It affects our families. It affects our

children. It prevents us from living into the fullness of the loving and grace-filled commu-

nity Christ calls us to be. Here are some of the statistics in Texas:

2,632 Texas women have been killed in family violence since 1990

223,000 Texans called family violence hotlines in the past year

79,000 people, mostly women and children, sought services from family violence

programs last year

27% of young Texans have been victims of physical dating violence. When emo-

tional and verbal abuse are included, the percentage rises to almost 50%. In the US:

1.3 million are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner each year

$5.8 billion is the cost of intimate partner violence each year

$4.1 billion is spent for direct medical and mental health services for family vio-

lence victims

Twice as likely are the chances that boys who witness domestic violence will

abuse their own partners and children as adults.

The Bishop concludes by asking us to lift up domestic violence, get involved, and make a

difference and perhaps save a life. Let's join the movement to make NorthTexas a safe

place for women, children, and families. For a downloadable list of resources, go to

Grace and Peace

Pete

On the first Saturday in September we sent 24 dedicated volunteers out to the streets in

order to share the love of Jesus with members of our community through the simple

kindness of a cold bottle of water. Even though we ran into a few roadblocks along the

way we did our best to refresh, bless, and invite. Thank you to all those who donated

their time, cases of water, and/or the use of their wheeled coolers!

I am crazy excited about the first few weeks of the re-launched Ignite service! The ener-

gy in the room is amazing. The team is proud of the work we are doing. The chairs are

filling up. Lives are being transformed. God is good! To quote my friend Carol, “The best

is yet to come!” We’d love to have you worship with us on Sunday morning in the Fami-

ly Life Center. And when you come see us, bring a friend with you!

I look forward to seeing all of you in worship and in ministry this month!

Peace,

Pastor Dean

Prayer Makes a Difference 1 Timothy 2:1-8 After observing some of the trends in our nation, we recognize need for

change. But God’s solution for our predicament is surprising. Paul instructs

Timothy to establish some priorities in the church, and first on the list is prayer

“for kings and all who are in authority” (1Timothy 2:2). The reason for our peti-

tions is so that we can live tranquil and godly lives and thereby have unhindered opportunities to tell others about the

Savior. Paul wouldn’t have given Timothy this instruction unless he believed the prayers of the church would make a differ-

ence in achieving God’s purposes for their nation. Our problem is not with the Lord’s promise or capability, but with

our lack of faith. By focusing on the enormity of the problems or the power of those in office, we lose sight of our

sovereign God who waits for us to request His intervention. Political policies and legislation are not ultimately determined in conference rooms and governmental chambers, but in

prayer closets. The voices that shape the direction of a nation are not necessarily those that ring out in legislative

halls, but those that approach the throne room of God with bold faith (Heb. 4:16). As the church believes and prays,

the Lord will respond. Knowing that God can change a country, you may be wondering why He has waited so long. Maybe He is asking you

a similar question: “Why have you waited so long to pray?’ Every authority on earth can be touched by the power of

prayer if we are willing to ask and believe God.

Sweet Hour of Prayer, invites you to join them for time of prayer every Tuesday at 1:00 pm in the Prayer

Room. The room is on the 2nd floor of the educational area. The room is open any time the church is open and is a

special dedicated room offered to you for a place for prayer. Also, there are cards in every pew in the sanctuary for

prayer requests. Use them for a specific person or situation and we will lifted your request in prayer.

THE BEST IS YET TO COME, OCTOBER 26TH Quite a number of years ago the idea for a Fine Arts Series be-

came a fairly regular topic of discussion among a small group of

people. As some of us would travel to Dallas and places beyond

to go to performances in other church’s Fine Arts Series, we

would come home with the renewed desire to have something like

that happen at our church. The ideal would be shared, the talk

would be positive and inevitable, but busy schedules and lack of

time would see it by the wayside for one more year. This past spring, I had the opportunity to go to the Fine Arts Se-

ries performance at St. Matthew’s Cathedral in Dallas. The fea-

tured performer was Bass singer, Jared Schwartz. It was an after-

noon of music I’ll not soon forget. Jared, accompanied by the

amazing Mary Dibbern, sang and danced and acted for his audience

with gusto and energy and beauty! It was spectacular! During this

trip to hear Jared the idea came again to start a Fine Arts Series at our church. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if someone of

Jared and Mary’s caliber could come? Well, the long and short of it is Jared Schwartz and Mary Dibbern are coming to

SSFUMC for the inaugural performance for our Fine Arts Series. Please save the date Sunday, October 26th, 2:00 pm in the Sanctuary. The cost is $10.00 per person. Seating will

be limited so you may call the church office to reserve your ticket (903-885-2185). A reception will follow so you will

have the opportunity to visit with Jared and Mary. We are so excited to have this wonderful young performer come

to Sulphur Springs.

CHRISTMAS CARE PACKAGES FOR KIDS IN HAITI We will be collecting and assembling care packages for children in Haiti on Wednesday, October

15th. The items needed for the care packages are:

2 bars of soap, size 4.5 to 5.5 oz unpacked and sealed separately in a small Ziploc

2 Pkgs. of sugarless gum 1 tube 4 oz. toothpaste

2 Pkgs. of Lifesavers (or similar) 1 toothbrush (packaged)

2 Tootsie Roll Pops 1 washcloth

1 spoon (not plastic, they often have to eat the rice & beans without utensils)

* Optional– stickers and other small fun toys.

Anything you can and want to help with would be greatly appreciated. This goes for anyone reading this, not just

youth families. We will assemble the packages if you want to bring any of the above items by October 15th.

WEDNESDAY OCT. 8TH–6-8 PM Come help us Pack-the-Prim

as we gather with all the youth

(and adults too!) of our community for a night of stu-

dent-led worship and prayer for our schools, communi-

ty and country. This is a great night to join with our

brothers and sisters from all our churches (and those

who do not belong to a church) to unite as one. I hope

all students and parents will plan to be at the football

stadium on this evening. Youth are to be dropped off and picked up at the stadi-

um (or better yet, parents stay and join us!) Invite all

your friends! Call Jason with any questions.

DISCIPLE NOW WEEKEND FRIDAY, NOV. 14TH-SUNDAY, NOV. 16TH I’m very excited about our upcoming Disciple Now

Weekend with the two churches we did Camp

Anakainoo with this past summer. (Wesley Greenville &

FUMC McKinney). A D-Now Weekend is basically an in

town retreat (although it will be out of town for us.)

Kids will be divided into small groups that will be staying

in host homes (FUMC-McKinney families) But there will

be all group activities throughout the weekend, worship

experiences, service opportunities, etc. It will be in

McKinney on Friday, Nov. 14th –Sunday 16th. Cost will

be around $50; more details and registration forms will

be coming.

I know there are some possible conflicts with this date if

(when) our varsity football team makes the playoffs, but

we will cross that bridge when we get there. I just want-

ed you to have the dates.
