    God's Plan For Israel

BIBLE PASSAGE14 Therefore, behold, I will allure her,Bring her into the wildernessAnd speak kindly to her.

15 Then I will give her her vineyards from there,And the valley of Achor as a door of hope.

And she will sing there as in the days of her youth,As in the day when she came up from the land of Egypt.

16 It will come about in that day, declares the Lord,That you will call Me Ishi (Ishi means my Husband)And will no longer call Me Baali (Baali means my Baal - a false

god).17 For I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth,

So that they will be mentioned by their names no more.18 In that day I will also make a covenant for them

With the beasts of the field,The birds of the sky

    And the creeping things of the ground.And I will abolish the bow, the sword and war from the land,And will make them lie down in safety.19 I will betroth you to Me forever;

Yes, I will betroth you to Me in righteousness and in justice,In lovingkindness and in compassion,

20 And I will betroth you to Me in faithfulness. Then you will know the Lord.

21 It will come about in that day that I will respond, declares the

Lord.I will respond to the heavens, and they will respond to the earth,22 And the earth will respond to the grain, to the new wine and to the

oil,And they will respond to Jezreel (God sows; Jezreel here represents

    Israel).

23 I will sow her for Myself in the land.I will also have compassion on her who had not obtained compassion,

And I will say to those who were not My people,

You are My people! And they will say, You are my God!

    (Hosea 2:14-23)

    THE HISTORY OF

ISRAELI want to talk to you about Israel. And as Hosea chapter 2:14-23 istalking about this significant nation. And as she's consistently at thetop of the news in our day. And there are so many peoples andnations that hate her and would literally have her wiped off the faceof the earth, as they race to go nuclear. It's crazy the thinking ofmany and the attitude towards the Jews. (It's demonic.)

And so what's God's plan for Israel (I was thinking) and in these lastdays where it seems, if I can borrow a phrase, All hell is breakingloose? And it's true. (I already said it.) The powers of hell arebeginning to be unleashed. Make no mistake about it.

And so what's God's plan for Israel in the midst of all this? I want totry to answer this question by turning to the one book that has theanswer the Bible. And before we consider the opening passage inHosea chapter 2 that I'm convinced has the answer to our question, Iwant to just real quickly and briefly trace the history of the Jews asthe Scriptures reveal it. And as it's just so important to keep in mindwhere Israel has come from to understand where Israel is going.

    God's Plan For Israel

    Abraham and Israel.

She has her start in Abraham, you'll remember. And as the Lord seeks

to establish (and does!) a relationship with Abraham. God tells him, first of all, in Genesis 12 to leave his family and to go to the landwhich He'll show him. And then God promises to make Abraham into agreat nation. And to bless him and to make his name great. And forthe purpose that Abraham will be a blessing to others. That's whyGod's going to make his name great and bless him.

And isn't it the truth, as I'm thinking about it here, that the Lord hasdone such wonderful things for us and after the example of Abraham

we're considering? When you get right down to it, God has. He'ssaved us from sin through our belief in Him. It's a wonderful thing! And He (God) has blessed us, as Ephesians 1:3 makes known. Godhas blessed us, it says...

...with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places inChrist. (Ephesians 1:3b)

We're a blessed people today. We truly are! But it's not so that we'll

just sit around and indulge ourselves that God has blessed us. Amen?Rather, its' so that we'll be a blessing to others. Are you a blessing toothers in your life today? (There are some Christians that areanything but a blessing.)

God promises to bless Abraham and so that Abraham will be ablessing and as Israel has her start in him.

And Abraham goes on to have Isaac. And Isaac has Jacob. And Jacob

is actually later given the name Israel, you'll recall. (Genesis 35:9-10)And he (Jacob / Israel) has twelve sons.

    Israel and Egypt.

And then there's the whole story of Jacob / Israel's favorite son,

Joseph. We're familiar with Joseph who goes ahead of his father toEgypt. And it's through the evil of his brothers that God turns intogood that Joseph ends up there. And to preserve Israel. During the

years of subsequent famine, God makes sure Israel is well takencare of in Egypt. You might find yourself ending up somewhere thatyou'd never have wished to have ended up. But it might just be thatthe Lord has a grander plan to use you to preserve a people thatmight not otherwise have been preserved. I hope you were able tocatch the point. I'm tracing the story of Israel to begin with here.

And now as she finds herself in Egypt. And under a king who knowsnothing of Joseph. (Exodus 1:8) And things get real bad there in

Egypt. And as the Jews are oppressed. And they cry out to the Lordbecause of it. And after some 400 years, God raises up Moses todeliver them. And the plagues are used to break Pharoah's will. Andthe Israelites cross the Red Sea. And she views the great army ofEgypt drowned and done away with.

...[T]he sea engulfed their enemies (Psalm 78 puts it).(Psalm 78:53c)

    Israel and the Wilderness.

And now Israel comes to the wilderness. And as she's on her way tothe land God promised earlier to give to Abraham the PromisedLand. And there are many lessons Israel learns in the wilderness asshe's on her way to the Promised Land.

And the wildernesses of our lives they're meant to be our teachers, too. Have you come to realize that? And maybe it is that you're

walking through a wilderness in one way or another at this timeyourself. I encourage you if you are to take a different approach tothe wilderness you're encountering than maybe you have in thepast. Rather than complain or worry or become depressed or throw inthe towel, instead, seek the Lord and ask Him to make it known toyou what it is He's wanting you to learn. The wildernesses of our

lives they're meant to be our teachers.

And Israel doesn't always learn her lesson. And as you'll remember

her wilderness journey, Israel is made to wander some forty yearshere. And it's because of Israel's unfaithfulness that she's made towander.

Israel in the Time of the Judges.

But finally Joshua comes along. And as the faithless generation ofJews has passed from the scene, Joshua leads a new generation inconquest of the Promised Land. And so at last the land God promised

to Abraham is seized and by his descendants.

And now Israel is in the land. And in the book of Judges there's apattern of the Jews at that time in her history. Do you remember thepattern? The pattern of the Jews at the time in her history of thejudges: Israel would turn her back on God. God would give her overto her enemies. Israel would eventually cry out in repentance.(Sometimes it'd take many years before Israel would.) And then Godwould respond to Israel's cry by sending a deliverer. It's the pattern of

the Jews at the time in her history of the judges.

And let me just say that I can't help but look at what's happening inour time and in the Middle East and with the history of Israel and thebook of Judges in mind. And I'm of the opinion that this is partiallywhat's going on now. And it's going to be going on in the last days.God'll give Israel over to her enemies ultimately to the person andrule of Antichrist. And it's to get Israel's attention that God's going todo this to awaken Israel to bring her back to her senses that she

might recognize who it is that is her true Messiah, the Lord JesusChrist. There's a pattern of the Jews during the time of the judgesthat's starting to play itself out again and even in our day I believe.

Israel in the Time of the Kings.

    God's Plan For Israel

And I'm continuing now with Israel's history and as it's after the timeof the judges that Samuel arises in Israel you'll remember. And it'sduring the time of Samuel that the Jews beg for a king after the

example of the nations around her. You see, God isn't good enough.

And God isn't good enough for some people in our day, too. (Is Hegood enough for you? Are you showing it in that you're not submittingyourself to another king?)

God isn't good enough for Israel. And so the Jews beg for a kingduring the time of Samuel. And she gets in a whole lot of trouble withthe first king, Saul. And then king after king after evil king. There are

a few good ones along the way (including David). But it's theexception to the rule as there are many kings of Israel (and also laterkings of Judah) who are vile and wicked and untrustworthy. Theselead the Jews into idolatry / the worship of false gods and away fromthe true and living Lord.

And so God sends prophets to His people to speak to them during thistime of the kings. And in just a moment I'll return to consider theministry of the prophet Hosea in the opening text as it has the answer

to the question, So what's God's plan for Israel in the end times? But I want to continue to trace the history of Israel beyond the timeof the kings and prophets, first. And just briefly a little further. I wantto bring it up to present-day Israel.

    Israel and Jesus.

And as I'm skipping ahead now and beyond the Jewish captivities inAssyria and Babylon. And skipping also through the so called silent

years that 400-year period, according to my Open Bible, betweenthe prophecy of Malachi [(the last book in the Old Testament)] andthe advent of Christ.

And so now I'm up to Jesus arriving on the scene. At long last Israel'sMessiah has come. And what happens? Israel doesn't recognize her

    Messiah. John puts it...

[Jesus] came to His own, and those who were His own

(the Jews) did not receive Him. (John 1:11)

This rejection of Christ by Israel results in her destruction and as ourLord Himself prophesied it. Jesus said to his disciples as they weremarveling at the temple buildings...

...Do you not see all these things? Truly I say to you,not one stone here shall be left upon another, whichwill not be torn down. (Matthew 24:2)

And it's because Israel doesn't realize her visitation that Israel isultimately removed from the scene.

    Israel and her Reappearance.

And she is gone as a nation for nearly nineteen hundred years and upuntil the year of our Lord, 1948. The fig tree (Matthew 24:32-33)blossoms as Israel becomes a nation again in 1948. It is nothing short

of a miracle. And it's due to God's intervention and purpose that Israelis reestablished in her homeland.

    GOD'S PLAN FROM

HOSEAAnd God has a plan for Israel beyond this and in these last days. And I want totalk about the plan now. And especially using Hosea 2.

    God's Plan For Israel

A Prophet to Marry a Prostitute?

And let me just speak of the book of the prophet Hosea itself for a

    moment.

It's an interesting book as Hosea's ministry is an odd one. It's theonly way I can describe it. Do you know about Hosea? God asks himto marry a prostitute. (And you thought God asked you to dosomething hard in your life!)

The timing of this request of the Lord of Hosea (and as I've alreadyreferred to the time of the kings and prophets in my brief outline of

the history of the Jews) is during the days of the northern kingdom ofIsrael and as they are estranged from God. (Hosea's ministry yearsare approximately 750-725 B.C. He is a contemporary of Isaiah.) It isat that time that God asks Hosea to marry a prostitute. And for thepurposes of illustrating Israel's unfaithfulness to Him (the Lord) inthat day. This is the reason why God asks Hosea to do such a thing. And just so you get the full picture of the relationship of Hosea to hisprostitute wife, I want to give you a quote from an author who writesabout it this way...

Hosea's wife Gomer practiced unfaithfulness as a lifestyle[and during their marriage. And u]ltimately [Gomer] left[her husband] and their three children, to live with aseries of other men. Yet Hosea continued to care for her.(I'm repeating it for emphasis) Yet Hosea continued tocare for her. (Teachers Commentary by Richards)

Wow. It's a picture of the care of the Lord (Hosea is) for those whoturn their backs on Him. (Do you see it?) And as it is God who"causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain onthe righteous and the unrighteous." (Matthew 5:45bc)

There are people away from Christ in my town and family (and yourtown and family) this very moment. (Is it you, too?) And yet they are

still having their needs met. They have jobs. They have food on thetable. They have money in the bank. They have healthy kids andgrand kids. And other things are going well for them. And why is this

the case with these who are away from Christ? It's not because the"gods" they're running after have any way of providing for them.Rather, it's because Jesus Himself is continuing to care and for thosewho've turned their backs on Him.

It's "the kindness of God [that] leads [people] to repentance," Paulwrites. (Romans 2:4b)

Do you know somebody away from the Lord today? Pray for the

chance to remind him or her about God's faithfulness and that it is Hewho is providing for them even though they'll have nothing to do withHim.

And so Hosea has this relationship with a prostitute as God hascommanded him to. And Gomer (his wife), who's ultimately given toadultery during her marriage with her husband ~ she representsfaithless Israel in the days of the northern kingdom long ago. Let mesay it again: Gomer represents faithless Israel.

And Israel is "faithless" in our day, too.

    God Still Loves Israel.

Israel, the nation, is in a state of unbelief. She is "without faith" /unfaithful ~ just like in the time of Hosea and after the example hewas called to portray. Notwithstanding the fact that many Jews arecoming to realize that Jesus is their true Messiah and as such are

coming to faith in Him. But that's the exception as mostly Israel isaway from God in our day. She's given to other lovers just likeHosea's wife, Gomer, was.

And yet God still loves Israel in our day like Hosea did Gomer.(Selah~pause to reflect)

    God's Plan For Israel

And just as God works in the midst of Israel in Hosea's day and doesso to bring her back to Himself, so the Lord is doing it in our day. It'sGod's plan for Israel in the end times. This is the plan: He's working

in Israel's midst to draw her back into a relationship with Him. Justlike the relationship God had established long ago with Abraham(James 2:23), God's working in Israel's midst today to bring her backto Himself.

"I have loved you with an everlasting love," Jeremiah writes of theLord's love for His people in Jeremiah 31:3. Did you know that aneverlasting love ~ it lasts forever?

And so God hasn't given up on Israel. Uh uh. No way. Not on your life.

    Israel Ultimately Restored.

Hosea 2:14-23 is just one of the many passages in the Bible thatspeak of Israel's ultimate restoration into a relationship with God inthese last days.

And let's just look at that text now applying it to what I believe is

happening in our world today as regards the Lord Himself and Israel,His people. Hosea 2:14 starts out...

"Therefore, behold, I will allure her, Bring her into thewilderness, And speak kindly to her."

It's Israel God is talking about here. And how He's going to beinvolved ~ in attracting, charming, fascinating and wooing her. And asI believe this is even true in our day as it was long ago. It's takingplace. We may not be able to pinpoint or document or put our fingeron it, but we can trust it's happening since God's Word has said it'ssupposed to. The Lord really is working behind the scenes in Palestineto bring about His purposes for the Jews. Think about it. And eventhough the network news will never represent it, the Lord really isworking. And in the life of His people, He is.

    God's Plan For Israel

And to restore the song that once filled her heart, God is working inIsrael. Notice now the middle ofHosea 2:15 speaks of the song...

"And she (Israel) will sing there (when the Lord restoresher to Himself) as in the days of her youth, As in the daywhen she came up from the land of Egypt. (See Exodus15:1-21)

And not only will Israel have her triumphant song of old restored, butIsrael's relationship with God will be changed as He's working in themidst of her in the end times. Notice Hosea 2:16 goes on...

"And it will come about in that day," declares the Lord,"that you will call Me Ishi ("Ishi" means "my Husband")And will no longer call Me Baali (which means "my Baal"~ a false god)."

The Lord is doing these things in Israel. I'm convinced of it! He'sattracting, charming, fascinating and wooing the Jews. He's workingto restore the song that once filled Jewish hearts. He's causing things

to go in a direction whose end is that Israel's relationship with God ischanged back to what it once was. (Revelation 7:1-8)

Israel Will Call Upon the Lord.

"For I do not want you, brethren, to be uninformed of this mystery so that you will not be wise in your own estimation that a partialhardening has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has

come in; and so all Israel will be saved." (Romans 11:25-26a)

The Lord is doing these things in Israel. I'm convinced of it! (You needto look at the Middle East and think like this.)

God is removing - notice Hosea 2:17 goes on now...

    God's Plan For Israel

"[T]he names of the Baals (false gods, idols) from [Israel's]mouth, So that they will be mentioned by their names nomore."

And God is betrothing the Jewish people to Himself. A person who isbetrothed is "engaged to be married." Notice Hosea 2:19 continues...

"And I will betroth you to Me forever; Yes, I will betrothyou to Me in righteousness and in justice, In lovingkindnessand in compassion. And I will betroth you to Me (Hosea2:20 goes on) in faithfulness. Then you will know the Lord."

And now one last thing I want you to see in the middle ofHosea 2:23.Israel will finally call upon the Lord when His plan is completed in her.Israel will finally call upon the Lord! The middle of v. 23 says notice...

"And I will say to those who were not My people, 'You areMy people!' And they will say, 'Thou art my God! - Andthey will say, 'Thou art my God!'"

It's the plan of the Lord for Israel in the last days I'm talking about.God is working in her midst as has been spoken about in many Biblepassages He would. God is working today to bring back Israel toHimself.

And it is those Jews who express faith in Jesus Christ that'll bebrought back and those who of their own choice do it. The way to getsaved is the same - how many of you know? - whether you're a Jewor Gentile. The way to get saved is the same. You must "confess with

your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raisedHim from the dead" and then you'll be saved. (Romans 10:9) The wayto get saved is the same whether you're a Jew or Gentile.

And so Israel, in being restored to the Lord in these last days, she willembrace God's Messiah, Jesus Christ. It's part of God's plan for her.

    God's Plan For Israel

And so we need to be praying for the peace of Jerusalem as Psalm122:6 states. And that the Prince of Peace would take up residenceamong the Jews. (Isaiah 9:6) That's the only way true peace will

    come.

And there's certainly a whole lot more that's ahead and that musttake place before Israel turns back to the Lord and as the book ofRevelation reveals. But it's gonna happen. The Jews will eventuallycome back as it's God's plan that they do.

And it just seems so exciting to me to see the initial soundings of iteven in the turmoil in the Middle East today.

God is working. And Christ is near. Very near. (Revelation 22:20a)

Do you believe it yourself? Are you living your life like you do?
