Q: We’ve had hardwood floors in our house for several years and although we love the look and the flow of having the same flooring everywhere, we’ve noticed some damage in high traffic locations, especially our kitchen, laundry room and bathrooms. We’re very careful about mopping up water spills, so is there anything else that could be causing the damage?A: Water is not good for any type of wood floor. If you have a leak under the floor; over time, solid wood will warp and a lot of people will notice the damage after it’s been wet over a period of time. Oftentimes, the wood will raise up where the seams are. On rare occasions, you will see a water stain on the top surface when the water is coming from above. A lot of times; however, water damage comes from below, either from the slab or underneath the house from broken pipes.

Q: What are some other flooring options that will give us the look of wood that will be more durable? A: Let’s see what Sami would say.

Q: Okay, what would Sami say?A: Samantha: Sami would say you should get L.V.T. (Luxury Vinyl Tile). It comes in planks that look like either wood or tile. If you get water on it, it’s not going to ruin it, unlike hardwoods and laminates. L.V.T. can look like any type of flooring, including hardwood.

Q: If I can’t find the look I want in L.V.T., are there any other viable options? A: Several manufacturers have come out with tile that looks just like wood. Tile will hold up against water better than wood. The problem with tile comes if you ever decide to change it. It costs a lot of money to take it out and it costs a lot of money to put it back in. But water can flow over tile without really hurting it. So, it’s all a matter of what look you want. A third option is to do a full spread vinyl instead of L.V.T. There are a lot of inexpensive vinyl floors available that simulate the look of wood.

Taking Charge of Your Choices

The last time I heard someone vent over how another person screwed them over, it made me stop. And then it made think. Boy, do I hate when that happens!

I remembered a time not so pleasant. It was the first time I moved out on my own with a buddy of mine from college. Things went well for the first 8 months and then one day my roommate suffered another emotional melt-down and totally bailed out on me. Without a single word of explanation; he split, leaving me with a huge mess in our apartment and all the unpaid bills.

When I added up the bills for his share of the rent and utili-ties it totaled just over $250, which was an overwhelming amount of money for me at the time. After all, we were both starving students attending the local community college and working at night to barely make ends meet for the grand sum of $3.75 an hour. Boy, have things changed in the last three decades! I might be making even less now.

When I saw the physical and financial mess my so called friend left behind for me to clean up, I was outraged and furious for weeks. How could he screw me over like this? I thought he was my friend? All my thoughts gravitated on the events that happened after the fiasco. Not once did my thoughts venture any deeper into the past.

If I had a time machine and could console and consult my younger self, I would have a lot of questions to ask, like what’s with the hair? In all seriousness, I would have questions that would force my younger self to really examine. “Didn’t you notice all the red flags, all the unstable emotional ups and downs your friend exhibited prior to moving in and sharing a bachelor pad? Did you not have more than enough information to come to the conclusion that your friend was extremely unstable and the next major earthshaking event would have him come crumbling down faster than a building in a third world country?”

The good news is once we become adults and we’re no longer financially dependent on our parents or the adults who raised us, it’s up to us to choose the people we invest our time with wisely. When I turn back the hands of time to an age when I still had hair in all the right places, I can honestly say that I was completely responsible for that tragic event. Nobody put a gun to my head and said you must move in with someone who’s more flakey than a dandruff sufferer in a head and shoulders commercial. As for the hair, I refuse to accept

responsibility for that; I’ll take the easy way out and blame it on the 80’s!

We all have our reasons for fall-ing into bad habits. We grow so ac-customed to doing certain things in a certain way that when we change, it can throw off our routine. With the kids out of school, we are busy taking vacations, camping trips, and going to birthday parties, so all these things combined makes it hard to maintain the same oral hygiene regimen. So, to prevent falling into bad habits, here are a few tips on how to keep a healthy mouth even when you are on the go.

* Travel toothbrush is essential. You can find many types of folding or two-piece toothbrushes that serve as their own travel toothbrush holders, which is especially helpful if you have limited space.

Travel-sized toothpaste and a small container of dental floss. You can put this in your purse, brief case, coat pocket or office desk drawer. It’s also smart to make sure you have one in your carry-on bag as well. Keeping a kit stocked with these items will make sure they’re ready to go when you are.

Chew gum If food and water are scarce on a trip, bring a pack of sugar-less gum with you. Airplane travel can contribute to a dry mouth, which can promote tooth decay. Chewing sug-

arless gum will help restore the saliva in your mouth, which can help rinse away excess bacteria.

Snack right. If you’re stranded at the airport or a budget hotel with nothing but selections from a vend-ing machine to sustain you, your teeth will thank you if you choose peanuts over pretzels or candy. Some evidence

suggests that nuts might help protect tooth enamel from plaque by neutraliz-ing acids in the mouth and providing a dose of healthy minerals. Natural fruits and veggies are the best option.

By keeping a consistent hygiene routine and following these tips, you can prevent cavities and problems down the road.

The Benefits of Looking Your Best

When I hear from people who want to lose weight, I like to tell them that aside from the obvious benefit of looking better, they are going to experience so much more than that and they will be blown away! Aside from obvious benefit of looking great,

you feel better when you’re in shape. When you feel better, you have more energy and greater mental clarity to make better choices in your life.

When you look the way you want to look, everything in life becomes easier. You have more confidence and people treat you differently. You may find yourself attracting different people into your life, especially people that you really admire and respect. As you attract more and more positive thinking people into your life, chances are very good that you will make more money, which usually makes life even more enjoyable.

When you feel good about yourself because you like the way you look and you’re feeling great, everything starts happening for you. I think it’s very important that people realize this. Oftentimes, when my clients begin the process of losing weight, they see all of these benefits adding up and become even more excited and motivated to reach their goals. Their success in multiple areas of their life propels them forward to continue their quest to be the best they can be.

Once you’ve experienced the positive ripple effect of losing weight, the total experience becomes the real reason why you’re making healthy changes. You won’t be content with just losing weight for the sake of looking great. You will want it all and you deserve to have it all! You will want to be healthier, you will want to attract healthier people and let’s face it, healthier people are attracted to people who

improve themselves. They will say things to you like this: “I’ve noticed you Bob, you look different, you look lighter, what have you been doing? I never would have said that to you 6 months ago because I didn’t notice it. But now I’ve noticed a change in you. Tell me what you’re doing?”

On our program, you will eat better, feel better and be better. You won’t be relying on outside substitutes to give you energy. Instead, you will be making healthier choices and you will be shocked by all the positive changes that will come as a result of your hard work and determination.

It only takes two things to be successful on our program: A mental commitment and time. You’ve got to learn how to make healthy choices and the process has to come internally. You can focus on the bad in things and I know about that because I was really good at that for awhile. Or, you can focus on the good things, the things that you like. That’s what I’m doing right now and life has never been better!

Car Tech TalkSafety First for our Newest Drivers!

With kids now back in school, parents have good reason to be concerned with safety. Safety is especially important for our new drivers, so now is a good time to have an overall safety check of your vehicle before you hand over the keys. First of all, a teenage driver is a new driver, so they are inexperienced. They tend to be more inattentive when compared to more seasoned drivers. You

want to make sure that your car is in good overall health. Kids have enough challenges operating a car on a public highway, so you don’t want to throw them any curveballs. A good place to start is to make sure that the brakes and tires are in really good condition.

When inspecting your brakes, be sure to have plenty of life on your brake pads and the rotors are in good shape. You really want to check the rotors to make sure they don’t have any ridges, even though the pad doesn’t run across the whole face of the rotor. You want to look at the edge of the rotor, because that’s a clear indication of how much has been taken off. With most cars nowadays, the old rotors are tossed out and new ones are put on. They are relatively inexpensive now compared to what they used to be. As for the brake pad itself, you probably want 3/32 of an inch or more. The issue with the brake

pads is the more material it has, the more heat can dissipate, so the less likely it will stay under pad in stopping conditions.

When you inspect your tires, make sure you have a decent amount of tread on them, especially now that the rainy season is just a few months away. In the old days, people used to use a penny as a guide and measure to the top of Lincoln’s head, which is 2/32 of an inch. In the state of California, you’re allowed to have a minimum of 2/32 of an inch on your front steer axle. The rear axle must be a minimum of 1/32 of an inch of tread. A word of caution is that these are minimums.

Most new cars now tend to be a little sportier, with tires that are more of a summer tire. So, I would take my car to someone who really knows what they’re doing and ask if the tires will be good for the wintertime. If you’re driving a vehicle with a sports package, you’ll

likely have a tire that is a performance summer tire. If you only have 2/32 of an inch, it’s pretty useless in the rain. So, be sure to examine not only the trend depth but also the tred design.

The city of Rancho Cordova just celebrated its 10 Year Anniversary in July with a 5-day party that included concerts, a parade, an art show, fireworks and a pyrotechnic birthday cake! If you were wondering how they could possibly top that, just wait a few weeks and then look UP!

The eighth annual California Capital Airshow will be roaring across the skies of our region again, October 5-6, 2013. There will be spine-tingling performances, including an international jet team, the Snowbirds, jet demonstrations, world-class aerobatics, wingsuit flyers, barnstorming, wing walking, endless entertainment and dis-plays. And the best part? Nearly ALL of the high-flying action hasn’t been seen in the Sacramento region ever before!

And be sure to check out the latest art exhibit at Rancho Cordova City Hall. UP! will be on display from Oct. 1 and will feature original works in various media from local artists that have been challenged to think flight, birds, clouds, airplanes, balloons and things that are aloft. Meantime, be sure to visit Our Town, on display through Sept. 30.

And stay tuned for great things being planned for 2014. Things are looking WAY UP!
