Mobile devices are a part of our lives, and students these days expect them to form part

of their learning both inside and outside the classroom. Teachers today need to know

how to use mobile devices like cellphones and tablets effectively to help students learn,

and the field of language teaching is no exception.OurGoingMobile course teaches you

how to plan for and use mobile devices in the language classroom, with a focus on

designing and implementing effective mobile-based activities with your learners. You

will examine current best practice and principles, and consider how to use mobile

devices in and outside the classroom, in formal and informal learning situations.

Going Mobile is for teachers of Englishand other languages. The courseexamines how mobile devices can beused to support your students' languagelearning through a range of dynamic andmotivating tasks and activities thatleverage the multimedia capabilities ofphones and tablets.

The course is suitable for language teachersand trainersworldwide,whether you are new tousingmobile deviceswith students, or whetheryou already integrate mobile-based activitiesinto your teaching. You will leave this coursewith a wealth of new ideas, tasks, techniques,approaches and tools for integrating mobiledevices into your teaching in a principled andpedagogically-sound way.

Course StructureYou will follow the course entirely online inMoodle, working individually, in pairs and insmall groups with the tutor. You are fullysupported by your tutor throughout thecourse. You will also take part in 2 groupvideoconferencing sessions with yourcourse colleagues and tutor, and you willget opportunities to try out mobile-basedactivities yourself. There are two coursemodules, eachmodule corresponding to 10days' work. Each module consists ofapproximately 7.5 hours work, totalling 15hours of work over twenty days:

Entry RequirementsYou won’t need any prior experience or knowledge ofonline tutoring, although very basic experience of emailand Internet use would be helpful.

You need competence in written and spoken English,whether English is your first, second or foreign language.Your level of competence inEnglishmustbeofastandardsufficient to enable you to fully understand and completethe coursework (e.g. minimumB1 on the CEFR).We alsoexpect you to be an alreadyworking language teacher sothat you can get the most out of the course.

In terms of hardware and software, you need:

- An Internet connection, preferably broadband- A headset (preferably with a USB connection)- A webcam (your computer should have one)

- An up-to-date browser- Adobe Acrobat Reader- An up-to-date media player

- A word processing package

- A mobile device (cellphone or tablet)

Our TutorsOur tutors are highly qualified andexperienced language teachers andtrainers, with years of experience ofmoderating online teacher trainingcourses. All our tutors have languageteaching backgrounds (e.g. teachinggeneral English, business English,ESP, primary and secondary-schoollearners, one-to-one, and teachertraining) and haveworked in a range ofcontexts and countries. Many of ourtutors are prize-winning methodologyand coursebook authors andmaterials writers. Feedback for thetutors on all of our courses isconsistently excellent, and they areexperts in providing guidance andsupport online, as well as being highlyknowledgeable in the fields oflanguage teaching and onlinelearning. WorkloadThe course lasts twenty days. You areexpected to spend approx. 7-8 hoursper module on online individual andcollaborative group work, includingoffline reading and reflection.Deadlines for task completion are eachten days, and you can log on at anypoint during that period to work on thecourse. There are two timetabledonlinevideoconferencing sessions, and thetimes of these are negotiated to suiteveryone. You will receive a detailedstudy timetable to help you organiseyour workload effectively once youhave enrolled on the course.

OverviewThe course teaches you how to plan for and usemobile devicesin the language classroom, with a focus on designing andimplementing effective mobile-based activities with yourlearners.

During the course, you will:

explore the practicalities of mobile use in and outside theclassroomconsider the challenges and benefits of mobile deviceuse in language learningdesign and deliver multimedia mobile-based tasks thatsupport language learningdesign mobile-based tasks for low- and/or high-resourcecontextsexplore and critically evaluate language learning gamesand appslearn to use augmented and virtual reality with learnersdeliver effective mobile-based feedback and assessment

You will also take part in two group videoconferencingsessions.

The course is hands-on and firmly based on applying what youlearn to practice. You will leave the course confident in how tocarry out awide rangeof effectivemobile-based taskswith yourlearners.Youwill alsogain a clear understandingof the choicesand challenges that come with mobile learning, and you will beable to plan for mobile implementation in your own classroomas well as at institutional level.

Youwill use anumber of online videoconferencingplatforms for chatswith coursecolleagues and your tutor several times during the course – the exact time forthese sessions is negotiated with the group. To take part in a videoconferencingsession you will need a headset with microphone. If you have a webcam on yourcomputer, you may want to connect that during the videoconferencing session,but this is optional – you will be able to see and hear your tutor even if you onlyhave a headset. Videoconferencing sessions are always recorded which meansthat even if you can’t attend all of them, you will be able to watch the recordinglater online, in your own time.

Key Features SummaryThe course develops your practicalknowledge about how best to use mobiledevices tosupport your students' learning. It isa valuable indicator to potential employersand students that you are able to use newdigital technologies effectively.

The course is hands on and practical. Youlearn about and try out mobile-based tasksand activities during the course.

The course is aimed at English languageteachers but is suitable for teachers of otherlanguages. The mobile-based teaching skillsyou acquire are transferable to the teachingand learning of other languages.

The course is run fully online inMoodle, so yousavesignificantlyon theaccommodation fees,travel etc. associated with f2f (face to face)trainingcourses, andyoucancontinue toworkwhile you take the course.

By taking the course online, you have theopportunity to experience high-quality onlinelearning first hand in the hugely popular virtuallearning environment Moodle.

You also experience a number of free or lowcost videoconferencing tools first hand, thatcan then be used by your students on theirmobile devices.

Our course participants come from literally allover the world. Working closely with yourcourse colleagues online, you meet and workwith teachersand trainers fromawide rangeofcontexts and countries.

There are a maximum of 13 participants percourse. Our course has one of the highestparticipant to tutor ratios of any online courseavailable, so you are assured of individualisedand constant tutor support.

Our tutors are highly qualified andexperienced language teachers and trainersthemselves, and they also have years ofexperience of (and are fully qualified in) onlinemoderating.
