Waihi - New Zealand’s Heart of Gold has a rich and fascinating history which includes over 100 years of gold mining. Today, mining operations exist alongside fascinating reminders of our golden heritage.
The breathtaking Karangahake Gorge and the golden sand of Waihi Beach are just a few of the natural attractions we enjoy while we also cater for sport, recreation and the arts. Our area also boasts a diverse range of businesses including tourism, dairy and dry-stock farming and manufacturing.

Waihi College is nestled quietly in a beautiful part of New Zealand’s Northern East coast. Our unique landscape provides for an amazing range of outdoor opportunities including surfing, kayaking, climbing, abseiling, mountain biking and more, right on our door step. Our academic courses and English language programmes are among the best in New Zealand and our outdoor education courses are a wonderful opportunity for personal growth and making friends. Our well resourced school offers up to date facilities including an instructional farm unit and kiwifruit orchard. With around 700 students, Waihi College is big enough to be able to offer great choices and small enough to feel like a family. Through outdoor education students have the opportunity to develop problem solving skills, leadership, independence and flexibility. They learn to improvise and to work as a team in challenging environments. Research confirms that students with these traits are more focussed on their studies, more likely to achieve academically and more motivated to be successful.Of course the activities are great fun too but the main benefit from outdoor education is personal growth. And when we talk with our international students, personal growth is a goal for their high school education abroad and so it makes great sense to choose a school that offers opportunities in the outdoors. New Zealand is a world leader in outdoor adventure and with the unique landscape and outdoor opportunities around Waihi, Waihi College is the perfect place for your overseas school experience.
Waihi College offers several options for English Language. With two lines of ESOL and one line of IELTS, students who are new to English may have up to half their timetable in English classes. The remaining classes are optional and often include Mathematics, Science or Physical Education. Students with more advanced English may join our mainstream English courses. All students are assessed on arrival and are placed in courses that are most appropriate for their particular needs. In addition to English classes, all students select a range of subject options according to their year level and ability. This process ensures that all international students interact with New Zealand students and English language skills are applied in a practical and academic setting.
The mission of Waihi College International is:
• To connect families within the local and global community.
• To create opportunities for students and families to share and celebrate their cultures.
• To support Waihi College programmes and improve learning and international opportunities for all students.
International students will be placed with wonderful host families and options include living on a farm, at Waihi Beach or in Waihi town. Our host families are carefully selected and are always very excited to share their homes with students from other countries. We have a homestay coordinator who will be there to support your child while the director of our international programme will oversee every aspect of your child’s stay in Waihi both in their homestay and at school.
