Let’s just start off with a little introduction. We are Mel and Linda Vogt from Region C, Nebraska, Chapter Z. We are so honored to have been chosen as the 2013-2014 National Family of the Year. As a result of having been chosen, you get to hear from us every month, like it or not.
Just so you know a little about us, we’ve been married 20 years, have his sons Mel Jr. and Rodneylee, her daughters Cindy and Tricia, and our son and daughter (adopted grandchildren) Nick and Nichole. Nick and Nichole just graduated from high school this year so we are soon to have an empty nest.
Mel was in the Air Force 20 years, worked 24 years for the Civil Service as a contract negotiator, then retired in 2009. Linda worked the last 26 years as a Customer Service Manager for CDS Global, Inc and accepted an early retirement plan in 2008.
We have been members of GWTA since August 2009. In the time since joining, we have been chapter directors (honored with Nebraska State Director of the Year in 2012). Mel is currently the Nebraska Rider Education Director and Web Coordinator. Linda is currently the Newsletter Director for Chapter Z Nebraska.
In addition to the time spent enjoying our friends in GWTA, Mel plays guitar and sings with a friend for local nursing homes and senior centers. He also loves joining
others for a jam session most Friday nights. We enjoy delivering Meals on Wheels to seniors when asked and are on the go a lot attending ball games to see the grandchildren play. Linda is a member of Red Hatters, spends time in meetings working on things having to deal with Nick’s handicaps, and spends a lot of time coordinating schedules.
We have really loved our time in GWTA. Our chapter is pretty active, very family oriented, and spends a lot of time together riding, camping, and just having fun. After returning from vacation at Gold Rush in Montana and continuing on for an Alaska cruise in July, Linda worked on finishing plans for our chapter’s Great Escape. In August, we rode our motorcycles to Minnesota to attend the Minnesota State Renaissance Festival. What fun!!! The next weekend, August 23rd-25th, found us going to Grand Island, Nebraska for our annual Friendship Campout. This is always a lot of fun and

not much work because all meals are provided except one and that is so easy to catch while we are out on a ride. Labor Day weekend is always a chapter campout for us. We go to a small city park with camping available which is not expensive. It means lots of food, great rides, and entertaining conversation around the campfire.
We’d like to add a special thank you to Gary and Vonda Brest, directors of Washington, Chapter V who showed great GWTA friendship by offering to store our vehicle a week. They also took us to the pier in Seattle and returned the next Sunday to pick us up. How terrific is that to not have to find our way in the heavy traffic of Seattle when we didn’t know where to go anyway. Thanks again Gary and Vonda, we really appreciated it.

More than 100 years after the first Labor Day observance, there is still some doubt as to who first proposed the holiday for workers. Some records show that Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a cofounder of the American Federation of Labor, was first in suggesting a day to honor those “who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold.” But Peter McGuire’s place in Labor Day history has not gone unchallenged. Many believe that Matthew Maguire, a machinist, not Peter McGuire, founded the holiday. Recent research seems to support the contention that Matthew Maguire, later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, N.J., proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York. What is clear is that the Central Labor Union adopted a Labor Day proposal and appointed a committee to plan a demonstration and picnic.

To and From Gold Rush

Hello Everyone! Mike & Kelly Downs & Randy Bates had quite an adventure on their trip to and from Gold Rush in Big Sky, Montana. The weather was pretty hot for most of the trip, but the scenery surely offset that.The guys encountered a heavy rainstorm near Big Sky Lodge on the return from Bozeman. They had to assist some vendors by holding down their canopies till some of the storm passed by. They had tri-tip sandwiches when all the excitement was over. Some of the vendors had to chase their canopies across the area. They also had a welcome rain going through Yellowstone. The guys arrived just in time to see "Old Faithful" go off. That is quite a sight if you have never been there. Mike is a western fan, so a lot of the destinations were related to Western sites. They went to Custer's last stand; bought some goodies to bring home. The rain in Yellowstone cut their trip to Jackson Hole short, another time perhaps. Mike said the rain was coming down pretty hard and it was getting toward evening. Kelly had a great picture taken near Custer's Last Stand; It is a hand carved bench featuring a Bear on each end and Instrument playing mice above the bench, very unique!
The guys were headed to Billings when Kelly lost a rear tire to a VERY LARGE SCREW, he kept it to show anyone who wants to see it. It was about 4 inches long and 3/8 of an inch through. Thank Heaven he is such a good rider. He was pulling a trailer also. He said the trailer started swaying, then the rear of the bike followed, then just squatted. He got it over to the side of the road and they started looking to see what happened. Thankfully, Randy Bates had a tire plug with him, they extracted the screw and put the plug in. Kelly had to call road side assistance to get the bike to Billings which was their destination The HONDA SHOP IN BILLINGS took the bike right in and set about putting a new rear tire on for some weary travelers. They did a great job and got them out and on the road in about two hours. Mike said from flat to back on the road was about 5 hours. THANKS BILLINGS FOR A GREAT JOB. Kelly was happy that you had just the tire he needed! They wound up spending the night in Billings and Mike said he had a very large chicken fried steak for breakfast (enough for two). The new Roadhouse Grill in Big Sky is owned by the brother of the lady who is hostess of the Lodge. The guys said the food at Roadhouse was great with very nice portion sizes. Anyone traveling that way stop in and treat yourselves. The trip was pretty much a big circle, going through southern Idaho on Hwy. 20 to their second stop of the trip at Idaho Falls.There are lots of stories and pictures to share with

They came home by Missoula to Lewiston, La Grande and Bend, then south.There is a long pass (about 50 miles) from Missoula to Lewiston that was 106 degrees that just about finished the guys off with heat. They had to spend the night in Prineville because of too much heat. Despite lots of liquids, Kelly got sick from the heat and they all were pretty much done in by then. A good night’s rest was welcome. They saw a lot of wildlife on the trip and loads of great scenery. They had another great meal in La Grande at the SILVER SPUR, large portions and TASTY! I'm sure when you seen Kelly, Mike and Randy, they will all have more stories to tell.

Hi Everyone,
It was a real pleasure to see so many of you at Gold Rush in Montana. From a Rider Education standpoint this was a very successful Gold Rush and it is all thanks to those of you who participated in the RE Program. Here are some of the highlights about your participation:
26 - GWTA Members achieved Level II in the Rider Education Program. Level II means they took the Entry Quiz and attended the Co-Rider Seminar or the Skill Rider Course (SRC).
1 – GWTA Member achieved Level III in the Rider Education Program. Level III means they met the requirements for Level II and had a current First Aid Card.
18 – GWTA Members achieved Level IV in the Rider Education Program. Level IV means they met the requirements for Level III and had a current CPR Card and attended a Rider Course in the past two years, which included the SRC we held at Gold Rush.
Most of these Members bought the patches and rockers that are associated with their respective level. If you see the patches and rockers showing up on their jackets and vest, I hope you will congratulate them on their accomplishments and commitment toward Rider Education.
In addition to the accomplishments above there were three GWTA Members who renewed their Level IV. All three of these Members are Motorcycle Safety Instructors and because of the requirements to maintain their Certification they can renew automatically. I would recognize those three here:
5th year renewal – Matthew Storbeck from Region F, Chapter W in Michigan 19th year renewal – Chuck Gibbs from Region E, Chapter A in Colorado 19th year renewal – David Hollinsworth from Region J, Chapter T in Ontario Congratulations to the 3 of you for your commitment to Rider Safety.
I would also like to acknowledge the following four individuals who stepped up and volunteered to conduct the Skill Rider Course. Without them it would have been difficult to have this program at Gold Rush this year:

Dave Hollinsworth from Canada Mike Zmiarovich from Washington.
On Thursday afternoon I held a seminar called “The Seasoned Rider”. It was a really fun course from the MSF. After the course one attendee came up to me and said, “I feel like I should ride my bike to the nearest car dealer and trade it in and drive home”. I won’t mention any names but I think his comment should remind us about a lot of factors we should all take in account when we decide to continue riding. Believe it or not the Motorcycle Safety Foundation considers a “Seasoned Rider” as anyone over 40 years of age. In the Seminar we discussed several aging factors such as eye sight, hearing, reflexes, reaction time, medications, and our health in general.
I am really looking forward to Gold Rush in Boyne next year where I hope to see several Members renew their Level IV status and continue the commitment to Rider Safety.

Dirty Bingo Thank You !
We want to thank all who contributed Dirty Bingo gifts at Big Sky. Some of the gifts were 'real' winners and went back and forth multiple times! A huge thank you to everyone who played and participated in Dirty Bingo on Monday and Thursday. It was a great way to meet new friends and Destination Friendship was in full swing. See you at Boyne in 2014. Ron & Eva Wodehouse WILL WONDERS EVER CEASE Due to a mix-up with the silent auction bidding, I (Rose Kimball) was jokingly forced into playing the "Rock, Paper, Scissors" game at Gold Rush so that my bid would get a basket. Since I didn't want to play it in the first place, I thought "I'll try to lose so I can sit down". Well wouldn't you know, I ended up "undefeated" and got the ongoing RPS magnificent belt. Guess the secret to winning is "don't try too hard". The other funny part is that Bonnie and I started the first round together and ended up the last round together, too, for first and second places. 4th of JulyParade in Concord CA
N-CA,CHAPTER P members met early at Mt Diablo High School and lined up to be in the Parade. There was a large rain cloud that went overhead and dropped a few drops of rain here and there before the Parade started. Chapter P was Entry #19, and drove into the Parade formation about 10:15 am to go the new route through the Concord streets.
The day was already hot and everyone was happy to find some shady areas in the parking lot before driving the route.
Members Cesar and Virginia, Mel and Marilyn, Dan and Jody, and Eric were on two wheels, and Richard, Leonard, and Harry drove trikes.
The motorcycles were all beautiful!!!! It was a great parade, just the right length, and past admiring people of all ages under lots of trees. And then everyone was off to lunch at Mimi’s, which was a popular spot. Everyone enjoyed the day! Region B Karen Davis
A Life In The Days Of A Biker Pt. 9By: Dave Norton - Region A, Chapter M, Moutain Valley Riders.
Part 9: A Complete 360!
Last time we left Dave peeking in the window at the Yamaha dealer… The 360 Enduro was a perfect match for me at the time. It had plenty of power for street riding and hill climbing, yet was light enough to toss around on the dirt and haul out of the mud without help. In short order it morphed into a true dual-purpose street/dirt bike, with a minor in desert racing. Mods included Akront aluminum rims, Cheng Shin full knobbies with rim locks, extended swingarm, forward-mounted Curnutt shocks, fork stroker kit, fork brace, cushy desert seat, Preston Petty fenders and headlight/number plate, longhorn bars, compression brake and Don Vesco plastic desert tank. Those tall dirt knobbies took a bit of getting used to on the street. Wider turns at lower speeds were necessary. It was waltz-me-around-again-Willie as the knobs just walked their way sideways. It was controllable, just different.

The Vesco tank was a point of embarrassment for me. I worked for Steam Power Systems (later to be Dutcher Industries) building a prototype steam car in San Diego. We approached Vesco to do some plastic work for us, and talked him into donating one of his new desert gas tanks for my current XL250 in order to evaluate the rotary-molding technique and
materials Vesco used. The tank sat unused for a year. When I got the RT3 I returned the tank to a local dealer. I said I’d bought the wrong Vesco tank and would like to swap it out. They did, but commented that it was “odd” that I’d managed to buy a prototype test tank that was never sold. Very embarrassed, I admitted I worked for the company Vesco had given the tank to a year earlier for engineering evaluation. Oops. By this time the local motocross scene had gotten a bit more competitive, and I had no chance to finish higher than mid-field against the “real” racing bikes and racers. Racing at Carlsbad put me in mind of a quote from A Band of Brothers: when asked by his grandson if he was a hero, one of the surviving warriors responded “No, but I served in the company of heroes.” Well, I rode in the company of racers. The bike was really set up more for desert than motocross, and I was itching to try. The opportunity came when our welder mentioned that his brother was helping lay out and mark the course for a desert race near the Mexican border the following weekend, and we could stay with them. I got my entry in and helped mark the course all day Saturday. Sunday morning there were a couple of hundred riders practicing the run to the smoke bomb when we got word that one of the experienced racers had hit a soft spot, gone off big time, broke his neck and died at the scene. We gathered everyone, cancelled the race, passed the hat and gathered a few hundred dollars for the widow. It was a freak accident, but it did underscore the inherent danger. My desert riding continued, but I never tried racing again.

Introduction
Philosophy:The philosophy of this organization is, to be dedicated to the service of its members. Purpose:This organization is directed by the members. Its purpose is to be a social organization for the owners of Honda Gold Wing and other model motorcycles (regardless of manufacture), their families, and friends. Objective:The objective of the organization is to provide the environment and organizational structure in which members may enjoy social gatherings and events without political endorsements or religious affiliations. It also encourages good riding habits, involvement in civic and charitable affairs, and the projection of a positive motorcycling image to the general public.
Elections Now is the time of year when Chapter Members start thinking of a new Chapter Director to take over the reins. (This could be the current one.) This is an excellent time to train them into this position if you haven’t all year long. It is a very rewarding and fun position. If you are a new member, don’t shy away as this is a great way to utilize the “Destination Friendship” motto and becoming more involved. Don’t wait to be asked, step up and volunteer!
Board of Directors:Composed of the Chairperson of the Board, nine Elected Directors that are elected by the membership. This information will be posted in Touring News when the existing Directors time is expiring so membership can vote on them. As of this time, Region A and F positions are open. Am/Can Post Gold Rush Tour Gold Rush was coming to Montana and Big Sky in particular so a number of my fellow chapter friends got together and planned an extended trip north to Glacier and Canada. It was the first ever visit for three of our party so it seemed the perfect time. Further planning brought the trip to the booking stage and on Friday July 19th we all saddled up three bikes, two trikes and seven people to begin our journey. Rose and Cal Kimball would each ride their own bikes (Rose rode her trike and Cal on his two wheels, both 1500 Gold Wings), Dave Donnelly and Donna Welter on his ‘02 Gold Wing, Kellie Hargreaves on her BMW, Glenda, our Touring News Director and I, Jim Boggess on our ‘03 Gold Wing Trike. Kellie by the way is Region E’s Family of the Year winner, and we all made up this energetic crew). Early by our standards, we departed Big Sky and had breakfast in Belgrade and followed I-90 to Missoula were we turned to go north on Hwy 93 with a stop at St. Ignatius to view this beautiful old church.

It is a National Historic site that was built between1890-1893. The 58 hand painted murals were done by a cook at the mission who was an untrained painter. Pictures do not give it justice. We pushed further north toward Flathead Lake and saw mile after mile of fruit and especially cherry
Tree’s and couldn’t resist the Flathead, Rainier Cherries that grow in the area. We spent the night in Kalispell at a super little independent motel called ‘Hill Top Inn’ who had rags and buckets ready for us to clean our bikes.

After a late start on Saturday and after two u turns we headed for Glacier National Park and the Road To the Sun. Beautiful scenery and very warm for Glacier at over 80 degrees. My bike overheated three times to the summit. The traffic was moving very slow and loaded with a trailer my fan did not come on.

There were so many people at the summit that parking was a premium and a good-fellow winger from Canada made room by moving a trash barrel to squish us in. We Americans and I'm sure

Canadians, are loving our National Parks to death. I think it would have been more fun taking one of those old replica Ford buses though the park.
The “Red Bus” Tours
After crossing into Canada at Waterton Lakes we continued on HWY 3 through Alberta and BC. To the newbies on our trip it was exciting to cross into two Providences within hours. Alberta and BC are beautiful and very clean and Cranbrook is a super city and full of life.

Speaking of life, it is tradition with this group to share in the nightly purchase of beer and fixings. It was my turn, so I went across the street and got two six packs of beer (we usually drink Coronas, but they were out). I was shocked to hear the gal say, “that will be $38.00.” Wow! The Canadians really like their beer. A can of chew by the register had $35.00 on it. The Lazy Bear Inn was a good place to put our heads down and we were comfortable except Rose fell down a stair because a hand rail was missing. Thankfully, she is ok after falling into a barbeque cooker that was not hot.
Sunday was a long ride, as we went south out of Cranbrook, but very pretty as we went through the canyon and put out at the Port of Roosville. We continued on to highway 2 and eventually on to Hwy 89 to Great Falls. We were ready for the hot tub in Great Falls but guess what? No hot tub or pool. Went across the street and ate at the Kentucky Fried Chicken place. Up and at ‘em early. We headed to Red Lodge, MT and eventually The Bear Tooth Highway. Rolling hills and pretty country sides were our companion. After arriving in Red Lodge at the Alpine Inn Lodge we all were looking forward to the hot tub that I knew was there. Guess what? The hot tub was broken the week before at the Bear Tooth Rally. Probably a Harley type, the owner said don't ask how. The next morning the owner cooked up a super breakfast outside. Then he gave us a tour of the lodges he built and owns. After leaving the lodge we ascended Bear Tooth Pass. The legendary pass lived up to its name and the scenery was spectacular. After lunch in Cooke City we headed down Chief Joseph Highway which I felt was the best relaxing scenery of the trip towards Cody WY.

Spending the night in Cody was great and guess what? The hot tub worked. Kellie decided she wanted to see a genuine western rodeo and the rest of us just laid back and chilled. Come Wednesday morning it was time to say our goodbyes and Kellie headed south at a fast pace (you know those Beemer riders) and the other four headed for Casper and eventually Longmont CO. Glenda and I stayed in Cody while I visited the museum and all I can say is WOW! What a world class place that is. It has very thing from the history of the

west, very costly art work, to Buffalo Bill, to the world largest collection of guns of all varieties..
Shell Falls in the Big Horns, WY
Glenda and I traveled Thursday to Spearfish, SD via the Big Horn Mountains. Shell Canyon and the falls are a must see if you get that way. A cousin’s family reunion was scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday with Glenda's side. A total of 63 showed up from all over the country. We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to travel around the country. We saw our GWTA friends and made new friends along the way. Gold Rush and Big Sky made this trip very memorable along with our traveling companions. Thanks for letting me share our adventure, Jim Boggess Region E, CO, Chapter A
