Southern Idaho Volleyball

2011 Roster

With just four returners, CSIvolleyball fans will be treated toall new look in the 2011 season

The College of Southern Idaho volleyball team will look to its four sophomores for leadership and its 11 freshmen to help get the Golden Eagles back to the NJCAA National Tournament and hopefully its 10th Na-tional Championship.

With so many new faces, expect CSI to try a lot of different combinations early. One position where the Golden Eagles bring back experience is middle blocker. Returning starter Beth Carey

took home all region honors as a freshman. The 6-3 Australian is joined in the middle by Taylor Wilkinson. Wilkinson moved into a starting role the last couple weeks of the 2010 season. Both will be pushed by incoming freshman Brooke Jensen. The 6-2 middle from Utah brings a big block to the court.

“Those three are part of a group that I think will be one of our strongest blocking teams we’ve had since I’ve been here,” CSI head coach Heidi Cartisser said. “All three will be interchangeable and give us choices depend-ing on who is having a good day.”

At setter Cartisser will have options but replac-ing All-American Barbara Alcantara will be tough. Sierra Hansen, a returning sophomore, will compete for a spot in a 6-2 or 5-1 offense with freshmen Ashia Joseph and Marie Fujii, both of Hawaii.

“All three are very tal-ented,” Cartisser said. “They each bring different strengths to the court. The most dif-ficult part will be deciding how to utilize them to give us the best chance to be suc-cessful.”

With a young setting group, passing will be key all season, especially early.

Cartisser will look to freshman libero Heather Meeuwsen to anchor the

5

2011 Outlookserve receive as well as keep the team in system in the back row. She is joined by sophomore Ashleigh Pollard and freshman Melissa Marsing as defensive specialists.

“Ashleigh is a great passer and server. She gives us options be-cause she can hit on the front row as well,” Cartisser said. “Melissa just brings energy to the court that is so important to keep momentum in a match. Heather will be our libero. I’m excited to watch her grow. She is very quick and reads the ball very well.”

Liene Mellupe, a 5-11 freshman from Latvia, and Taila Gnass, a 5-11 freshman from Brazil, will compete for a position on the right side.

“Liene is the whole package. We can look to her on either the out-side or right side. She also can pass and serve. Taila is a big block and will give us the option of running a 6-2 so we can have both of them on the court.”

On the outside, Cartisser can look to returning redshirt freshman Scharae Steel (Reno, Nev.), and freshmen Emily Ottinger (Palm-dale, Calif.), Keani Passi (Waianae, Hawaii) or Kaylee Holmstead (Declo, Idaho).

Steel went down with a torn ACL in the first weekend of play last season so will enter this year as a freshman playing age. She was the Golden Eagles top left side heading into last year.

It will be a battle though as Ottinger, Passi and Holmstead are all very talented.“I think we have one of the most volleyball savvy teams we’ve had in a long time,” Cartisser said. “They all

just understand the game so well.”All four outsides are very powerful and are able to put balls away when needed.“I think once they figure out when to put a ball away and when to tip and when to use the block, we will be

tough to defend,” Cartisser said. “I’m excited to watch them push each other and compete for the position.”The Golden Eagles will have a tough road through their region again this season. While CSI opened the year

ranked No. 5 in the nation. Salt Lake was pre-season ranked seventh, North Idaho College 17th and snow Col-lege 24th.

Only two teams can advance to the NJCAA National Tournament. And all the teams in the Scenic West Athletic Conference will be young this season. Look for some inconsis-

tencies early but tough teams late in league play.

Heidi Cartisser joined the College of Southern Idaho as the head coach in fall of 2006.

She led the Golden Eagles to their 9th NJCAA National Champi-onship in 2009. It was her second trip to the national tournament. In 2007, Cartisser led CSI to a Region 18A championship and a 10th-place finish at the NJCAA National Championships. In her five years at CSI, Cartisser has compiled a 153-50 record.

The former Golden Eagle, who played at CSI from 1991-1993, graduated from Albertson College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1995.

Her coaching career began at Treasure Valley CC in Ontario, Ore. Cartisser coached the Chukars from 1995-2000. At that time, TVCC was a member of the Scenic West Athletic Conference. In 1997, Car-tisser led TVCC to the regional playoffs for the first time in 19 years.

After coaching at Treasure Valley, Cartisser took the head coaching job at Chicago State University. CSU competes in the Mid-Continent Conference. In her first year at Chicago State, the team won more matches than the previous seven years combined and won its first conference match in school history. In her second season, the team improved statistically in almost every category and won more conference matches than the previous year.

In 2003, Chicago State finished fourth in the conference, posting the highest conference finish ever in school history. In her last season there, CSU finished with the most wins ever by the Division I school.

Cartisser moved back to the Magic Valley area in the spring of 2005 with her family. Her husband Jim assisted at the College of Southern Idaho in the fall of 2005, helping the Golden Eagles to their eighth national championship.

Erin joined the CSI volleyball program as an assistant coach in 2007. She brings the experience of a coach and player to the Golden Eagle vol-leyball program. She grew up in New Plymouth, Idaho before competing at Treasure Valley for two years under Heidi Cartisser. Erin then played one season at Lewis Clark State College in 1999 as a defensive specialist, where she helped her team advance to the NAIA national tournament.

In her final year of eligibility, Erin transferred to Chicago State Uni-versity, where she reunited with Coach Cartisser. In 2002, Erin was an assistant coach at the University of Great Falls. In May 2003, she was named the head coach at Independence CC in Kansas, where she compiled a 22-12 record her first year and a second-place finish in the Kansas Jay-hawk Conference. In 2004, the team finished the season 40-9 and won the conference, region and district titles, qualifying for the NJCAA National Tournament. She coached two All-Americans.

From there, Erin took over duties at Lewis Clark State College as the head coach. Erin then joined Heidi for the third time, this time as an assistant coach for CSI.

Erin and her husband Gary have two daughters – Piper and Paige.

“I don’t know what I’d do without Erin. She brings that intense, hate to lose at-

titude to practice every day. She has played for me and coached with me so

she understands what I want and how I like to coach. CSI and I are lucky to have her as part of the Golden Eagle family.”

Babes brings playing experience and an enthusiasm for the game of volleyball to the court. A family affair, Babes follows in the footsteps of her sister All-American Aneli Cubi-Otineru who played for CSI in 2005 and helped lead the Golden Eagles to a national championship. An-other sister, Kawena Cubi-Otineru played for CSI in 2006, the first year Kalulu assisted for the Golden Eagles.

She began her volleyball career, playing club ball for the Kame-hameha club team in Hawaii in seventh grade. She continued to compete for that team for five years. A standout at University of Hawaii Lab High School, Babes led them to four state championships. In 1986, Babes competed on the 16U Junior National team, earning all-tournament honors.

Babes played one year at the University of Hawaii, ranking sixth all time since 1985 in service aces per game. In 65 games, she recorded 26 aces. Kalulu has four children - Darren, Daylen, Darian and Del.

“Babes is the type of person that will do anything you ask her to do. She un-derstands the game of volleyball so well and is always willing to help wherever

needed. Babes teaches players how to be intense and focused while taking the love

of the game to another level.”-Heidi Cartisser

Gerald L. Beck began his career at the College of Southern Idaho in 1975 and became president of the college in 2005. His many titles at the college include Instructor, Coordinator of Trade and Industry Programs, Dean of Continuing Education/Summer School, Vice President of Instruction, and Executive Vice President/Chief Academic Officer.

Dr. Beck is an Idaho native. He received his bachelor’s degree in Technical Education, his master’s degree in Teacher Education, and his Ed. D. in Adult Education from the University of Idaho. He completed his post doctoral at Harvard University Institute for Educational Management.

In addition to his duties at the college, Dr. Beck is a member of the Twin Falls Rotary Club, and is a board member of the State Workforce Development Council appointed by the Governor. He serves as a board member on many local organizations including Southern Idaho Economic Development Organization, Region IV Development Association and Magic Valley Regional Medical Center. He is past president of the Idaho Association of Private Industry Councils.

Dr. Beck and his wife, Barbara, have three adult children and three grandchildren. He attributes much of his success to the opportunities provided by the college and the support from his family and co-workers.

Former CSI women’s basketball coach Joel Bate took over Golden Eagle Athletic Director responsibilities in January 2007.

Bate, who had been teaching in the English Department since he arrived on the CSI campus in 1993, gave up teaching in the classroom to work with student-athletes and coaches on a daily basis.

Bate coached at CSI from 1993 until 2000, leading the Lady Golden Eagles to the national tournament in 1999. During that span, Bate compiled a 144-78 record. He coached four NJCAA All-Americans and four NJCAA Academic All-Americans. Two players went on to play professional basketball, including Jessica Gibbs Mesna who assisted current coach Randy Rogers. In 1999, Bate earned Region 18 Coach of the Year honors.

Prior to working at CSI, Bate taught and coached at Bishop Kelly High School in Boise. He taught senior English and headed the English department. In addition to his teaching duties, he coached girls’ volleyball, track and basketball, where he

compiled a 114-32 record and four third-place state finishes.Bate earned his undergraduate degree in marketing at Boise State University and his master’s degree in English at the

University of Idaho in 1986.Bate and his wife Donna and three children live in Twin Falls.
