The Golden Eagles have never faced Presbyterian, Charleston Southern or Monmouth. SCOUTING THE OWLS Kennesaw State comes into the game with an 0-1 record after a 28-23 loss to No. 19 Samford last Thursday ... the Owls are 4-4 in games following a loss ... This is only the third season in the program’s history ... Redshirt freshman linebacker Bryson Armstrong picked off a pass and recovered a fum- ble in addition to his seven tackles and two pass break-ups ... The Owls rolled up 545 yards of total offense in the loss to the Bulldogs, the seventh time in the last 12 games and fifth of last six that KSU has tallied more than 500 yards of offense ... Junior QB Jake McKenzie had a career-best three touchdowns against Samford -- two rushing and one passing. OPENING DAY WOE With the 41-14 to FCS No. 25 Western Illinois, the Golden Eagles dropped back-to-back opening day games for the first time since 2010-11 and back-to- back opening day home games since 1996-97. Tech is 43-48-5 on opening day. LABOR DAY SALE Redshirt freshman quarterback Andre Sale recorded his first start behind center for the Golden Eagles against Western Illinois on August 31. While the tough defense for the Leathernecks made it difficult for the Tech offense, Sale did a solid effort under pressure. He ended the contest with 223 yards and two touchdown passes on 11-for-22 passing, including a 61-yard strike for his longest pass of the contest. However, WIU did return an interception 45 yards for a touchdown. NORMAND INVASION Senior linebacker Elliott Normand earned the start at will linebacker against the Leathernecks and did his job, striking for 18 total tackles in the 8/31 contest. He ended the game with four solo tackles and 14 assisted stops. That one game alone would have put Normand 14th on the Tech tackling charts for the season in 2016 and was a quarter of what Normand himself had last year. Normand was five shy of tying the school record of 23 tackles in a game, set by hall-of-famer Jim Youngblood against UT Martin in 1972. DOUBLE-DIGIT STOPPERS In addition to Normand’s tally, Deontay Wilson and Deven Sullivan also reached double digits in tackles in the contest against WIU. Wilson had 11 stops – one solo and 10 assisted – while Sullivan had 10 – four solo, six assisted. STREAKS SNAPPED Dontez Byrd’s three-game 100-receiving yard streak was snapped against Western Illinois as he caught three passes for 76 yards and one touch- down. His numbers were bolstered by a 52-yard touchdown catch … Yeedee Thaenrat also saw his two-game 100-yard rushing streak come to a close as he was held to 11 yards on seven carries. NULL VALUE The Tech rushing attack was held to zero yards

HEAD COACH MARCUS SATTERFIELD

Marcus Satterfield made a splash in his first season in Cookeville. Ener-gizing the fanbase and the community with a high-intensity, high-oc-tane energy, Satterfield helped lead the Tennessee Tech football team to

its best season since 2011 and it was obvious that it was just the beginning.Trust the process, indeed.Over the course of his career, it has been a process – one that has proven successful as he helped build top-notch programs at Temple and Chattanooga. But now, with his first season with the Golden Eagles in the books, the focus remains on one word – championships.Satterfield, 40, was announced as the Golden Eagles’ 11th head coach on Jan. 4, 2016, and he wasted no time working in the community trying to build support and working with his players to make Tennessee Tech a power in the Ohio Valley Conference again. The son of a high school football coach – Bill Satterfield at Greenback, who Marcus played for between 1990 and 1994 – Satterfield was more than used to the demands of the position. After graduation, Satterfield spent one year at Chattanooga State Community College before transferring to East Tennessee State University, where he was a three-year letterman for the Buccaneers between 1995 and 1998, receiving his bachelor’s degree in history in 1999.Satterfield then entered the coaching profession at Chattanooga, serving first as a volunteer, another as a restricted earnings coach, then one year as a wide receivers coach. He then moved over to Knoxville, spending two seasons as a graduate assistant for Phillip Fulmer at the University of Tennessee, helping direct the team to Peach Bowl appearances in 2002 and 2003, serving as the interim running backs coach for the second. He also spent one year each at Richmond and Western Carolina as the wide receivers coach, then entered the Ohio Valley Conference for the first time as he joined the UT Martin staff for three years, working as the passing game coordinator, then becoming the associate head coach in 2008.In 2009, Russ Huesman named Satterfield the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Chattanooga, a tenure that lasted four seasons and saw the Mocs earn winning seasons each year.Matt Rhule then brought Satterfield to Temple in 2013 as he was named the offensive coordinator. He also worked with the quarterbacks for two years, then the running backs in his final season in Philadelphia. That 2015 season was a special one as the Owls opened the season 7-0, were ranked in the Top 25 for the first time since 1979, won 10 regular-season games and an American Athletic Conference East division championship, as well as earned the team’s first win over Penn State since 1941.Just a couple of weeks after playing in the Boca Raton Bowl, Satterfield, with his wife, Sarah, and daughter, Harper, were in Cookeville, taking charge of a program for the first time.In just a few short days, Satterfield had his staff together, a signing class inked and players ready to start working toward their ultimate goal – an NCAA FCS National Championship. While the 2016 season didn’t see that, the Golden Eagles did post one of its strongest seasons in recent years, overcoming many obstacles, and proving that it is, after all, a process.
