Preface to the Second Edition
It is a truism to state that much has changed for the Moscow mathematicalcommunity in the almost twenty years since the idea for this book was conceived andwe approached about forty mathematicians in the Soviet Union for contributions. Some accepted, others did not reply, and some declined with an apology that timeswere too uncertain for them to be completely open about airing their views.
In the meantime, many have emigrated, others remained, but the contactsbetween the first and second groups are more numerous than anyone could haveanticipated in the early 1990’s: some of those who emigrated return regularly toMoscow for seminars, teaching and conducting research, and some of those who re-mained go to conferences, sabbaticals and other visits abroad. This interminglingof Russian mathematicians with those from outside of Russia has had several con-sequences for mathematics, both within and without Russia. Thus, to mention butone example, we see in the U.S. (say, at UC Davis, or Penn State) the organizationby Russian mathematicians of “mathematical circles” as a method for training highschool and undergraduate students by their slightly older peers, as was common inRussia (see footnote on p. 143).
When we were asked to prepare a preface for this second edition, it seemed natu-ral to solicit an update by a Moscow mathematician. V. M. Tikhomirov graciouslyagreed and contributed on very short notice the beautiful article “On MoscowMathematics—Then and Now”, which is much more than an update, giving us anoverview of 20th-century Moscow mathematics.
Reading this account was like a trip down memory lane. We hope it will provokethe same reaction from those who have experienced Moscow mathematics in thatperiod, and, for others, that it will provide some flavor of what it was like to bethere.
Tikhomirov sent us his article just before the 2006 International Congress ofMathematicians in Madrid began. So he had no way of knowing that out of thefour Fields medals in Madrid, two would be awarded to mathematicians born andtrained in Russia, one of them in Moscow. One of them has remained in Russia, andthe other lives and works in the U.S. but has kept close ties with mathematiciansin the old country.
So we join our hope to that of Tikhomirov and many others that the newcentury will be as productive for Moscow and Russian mathematics in general asthe preceding one was.
In addition to the new article by Tikhomirov, this edition contains an index ofnames and a short list of errata. We are grateful to V. I. Arnold, who sent a wholepage of corrections as soon as the first edition appeared.

HMATH/6.RAMS on the Web www.ams.org
This volume contains articles on the history of Soviet mathe-matics, many of which are personal accounts by mathematicians who witnessed and contributed to the turbulent and glorious years of Moscow mathematics. The articles in the book focus on mathematical developments in that era, the personal lives of Russian mathematicians, and political events that shaped the course of scientific work in the Soviet Union. Important contribu-tions include an article about Luzin and his school, based in part on documents that were released only after perestroika, and two articles on Kolmogorov. The volume concludes with annotated bibliographies in English and Russian for further reading.
The revised edition is appended by an article of Tikhomirov, which provides an update and general overview of 20th-century Moscow mathematics, and it also includes an Index of Names.
This book should appeal to mathematicians, historians, and anyone else interested in Soviet mathematical history.
