MEMBERS’ WIREPelican Waters Members Newsletter
Dear Members,Firstly, Welcome to our new members who have joined over recent months, I hope that you enjoy our club and meet many new friends through your golf.
Thank you to the 31 volunteers, who assisted our maintenance team
with renovations of greens, cleaning up around trees and weed wanding
of our fairways. We appreciate your support as this helps with the little
jobs that need to be done, but also helps the greens and course recover
quicker so that all members benefit.
Thank you to members who have been assisting with repairing divots
on fairways including the fix up holes. I also urge you all to assist with
bunkers. I noticed on members competition days there are many bunkers
that are not being raked properly and members who pick up the rake
and drag behind them ( I saw this first hand ). This is not raking bunkers
properly and just remember by doing this you are affecting a fellow
member and you too may have this happen to you. It will take maybe 1
minute longer to rake the bunker properly. Don’t forget not to walk up the
faces of bunkers & always exit out the back of the bunker.
Good luck to our men’s pennant team who start their season this Sunday
7th February at Woodford. We hope you can go one better this year by
winning the pennant. Our ladies’ season also starts soon and we will let
you know how they are also going once their season starts.
Finally, we appreciate the support of our members and guests to recent
events including the Friday Night Drinks, Degustation Dinners and don’t
forget the upcoming Oriental Night. Our new head chef, Clive, and his
team are creating such great food I’m sure you all agree. Our plan in the
near future is to open 1 night per week for dining to further enhance our
food and beverage offering.
Happy golfing and socialising,-

GENERAL MANAGER
LADIES match committee
This will run for the year from 19th January through to the last game prior to the Medal of Medals Competition, usually held the first Tuesday in December. If you would like to be involved in the Eclectic Competition for this year, please bring your $10 payment and put your name down on the competitors list for this competition next Tuesday.
We are in the midst of course renovations, which we are sure will ensure that the course is maintained in the most spectacular of conditions. We are hoping that the recent wet weather will assist in bringing the course back to playable conditions very quickly. Thanks is extended to Troy and his crew and also the volunteer helpers.
Let’s hope that the recent high temperatures and oppressive humidity will soon pass and that we can get back to enjoying our games in reasonable conditions.
Hoping that you all have great rounds in the coming month.
Given that the Monthly Medals have started for the year on the Saturday now, the ladies have elected to start the Eclectic Competition.

MEN’S match committee
A big thanks goes out to all the members that give up their time to volunteer to help Troy and his team with coring, pitch repairs, sanding divots and weeding. Without this help it would take a lot longer.
It is great to see so many members out playing golf, even though we have had some rain of late. Talking about rain and storms, please do what the golf operations tell you out on the course. Especially when it comes to sirens to stop play, as this is in the best interest for all. The last thing we want is an ambulance coming out to pick someone up from lightning strike - always obey directions.
It is great to see the course in such great condition and I am sure after the reno’s the greens will be back to their best too.
Big thanks go out to all the Vets, especially for supplying our new honour board inside & rules board outside. The honour board will last a lot longer plus some names are no longer blocked by couches, well done!
I have noticed and also received feedback from the volunteers on Monday, that the pitch marks and divot repairs are a lot less than previous times. However, after the rain when carts are on paths some members forget to take a sand bucket with them when walking over to play their ball. Make sure you do it or the other player can run out and do it for you. Please help each other as this helps to maintain our course and helps to not slow the play.
Most of all, enjoy your golf.
Hello members,
February sees us in full swing for Course renovations despite the rain & the record hot temperatures.

Last year on the PGA Tour, Jason Day was the third ranked player in driving distance averaging over 313 yards (281m) behind Bubba Watson (315) & Dustin Johnson (317). He also keeps the ball in the air for the longest time (6.7 seconds) and hits the ball higher than any other player (132 feet). Next time you’re playing, count how long your ball stays in the air! The following are some key points he works on in his game.
Swinging harder is not the best way to hit it further. Have you ever tried to swing slower, with more control and discover the ball actually goes further from a more centred hit? Jason focuses on fundamentals such as grip, setup and making solid contact. With the driver setup, it is essential to angle your spine away from the target and by slightly dropping with your right shoulder below your left (for a right hander).
To start the backswing, take the club back straight and wide as possible without disconnecting your arms from the body to create a wide swing arc. The wider the arc, the
more power you can generate. Be careful not to slide or laterally sway away from the target, instead try to create a nice, tight body coil not allowing your right knee and hip to drift away from the target.
Jason likes to hit draws and fades to help him understand how to hit the ball straight. One key to hitting a straight drive is to keep the club head from lagging too far behind your body as you swing down. Try to feel as if your body, arms and club are moving to the ball together as a unit.
Following impact, it is important not to “quit” on the ball and continue your swing through the ball. The wide arc on the backswing should be mirrored on the follow through extending towards the target.

GOLF News
We have also had another successful course renovation during the week and the course is expected to recover to its extremely high standard within 3 weeks.
Golf Operations:
Storm/ Inclement weather procedure:
With the current weather patterns and inclement weather the Sunshine Coast is currently experiencing, please make sure adequate care is being taken whilst out on the course. In the event of such weather, where possible, players will be warned before play about the potential for severe weather occurring on the course. In the event of a potential lightning strike a decision must be made to cancel or suspend competition play as early as possible to allow enough time for members and guests to clear the course.
Course Closures
If the playing conditions are deemed dangerous, the Manager, Pro Shop or Member of the Committee will close the course. For players on the course one long blast will be sounded with an air horn from the clubhouse directed at the 1st tee and 18th green. Where possible, golf shop and drinks cart or course marshal will advise players on course of the impending severe weather. On hearing this horn all players MUST either mark their balls or leave them where they lie (first option is preferable) and leave the course immediately and if safe, return to the clubhouse. If a player continues to play, they are immediately disqualified.
Re-Opening the Course
When conditions have improved and play can safely resume the Manager, Pro Shop or Member of the Committee will re-open the course and players will be advised that the course has reopened. I thank all members for their understanding and cooperation during such circumstances.
Drinks Cart Specials:
Please keep a look out for our new weekly beverage specials out on the drinks cart, as well as the reintroduction of fruit salads and individual fruit pieces on selected days.
Upcoming events:
Glasshouse Mountain Golf Zone – Men’s Pennants
I wish our Men’s pennant team the best of luck for the
upcoming Pennant season which begins this Sunday February 7th where the team will be travelling to Woodford to begin their quest for another Pennant title. The boys came extremely close last season finishing Runners Up to Wantima and no doubt will go one step further during 2016!
Please come and support the team during the season;
7/2/16 - @ Woodford – 11am
14/2/16 - @ Caboolture – 7am
21/2/16 - @ Kilcoy – 9am
28/2/16 - @ Pelican Waters – 11am
6/3/16 - @ Pelican Waters – 11am

Happy Golfing!
Dear Members,
We have definitely had an extremely warm start to the year with temperatures certainly higher than average and golf results to match. With these high temperatures in mind, please make sure whilst on course you are staying hydrated with sufficient water and electrolytes.

Around the greens
We also received rainfall for the last five days of the
month bringing the January total to 220mm. As a
comparison, last year in January we had recorded a total
of 263mm of rainfall on the course. With such heavy
downpours the bunkers were filled with water and the
faces washed out in places creating an enormous amount
of repair work for the maintenance staff.
Having received drying conditions throughout the
majority of the month the greens were groomed to
remove the dead material producing a better putting
surface. These drying conditions also made it necessary
for us to apply wetting agent to the greens and the
surrounding areas. Following the rainfall we did receive
the humid conditions have made it necessary for us to
continue with a preventative fungicide program on greens
for pithium control.
With only a small amount of bird damage in the collars
we have not seen the abundance of black beetles as in
2015. We are in the process of spot spraying herbicide
to remove unwanted weeds in the fairways and tees.
Preparations are underway to renovate the greens and
tees during the first week of February. This will allow us to
incorporate our amendments and continue to improve the
soil structure in the greens.
We have a number of members who have volunteered
to go through the course and clean-up, or remove any
shrubbery which has become unsightly. This will not only
improve the look of the course but will also speed up the
play of golf.
The photo above taken beside the 8th Tees is one of the
areas that are to be tidied up.
Hi Members,Up until 26th Jan we had only received 89mm of rainfall on the course. Then on Australia Day we had 2 downpours recording 30mm from 7 til 8 in the morning & another 57mm after lunch.

The prospect of a slowing China that cast such a long shadow across the market last year has darkened ominously at the outset of 2016. With markets in a tailspin around the world, Ord Minnett analysts have taken a deep breath and done our level best to corral our thoughts on the outlook for the Australian market.
There are risks lurking in dark corners – China, the property market, APRA, the political merry-go-round – but we see the balance as still tilted in favour of reward. This view stems, in part, from the resilience of the consumer and robust economic forecasts.
In addition, we believe that further Australian-dollar weakness will give additional support to companies earning in US dollars. The constructive case for banks remains stable net interest margins, cost reductions and near-term capital certainty.
Equity market views – Our December 2016 target for the S&P/ASX 200 Index of 5,500 suggests some 10% upside for the Australian market over the coming year. Our preferred sectors remain financials, REITS and health care, while we are still underweight resources and consumer staples.
Economic perspectives – China and the Fed look set to take centre-stage again in 2016. Deepening concern about economic deceleration in the former has upended markets this year and will likely remain
a headwind until a semblance of stability emerges. In Australia, we suspect there will be echoes of last year’s underwhelming economic performance in 2016. Despite this, we are still pointing to an improved GDP growth outcome at 2.7%. We also expect the RBA to remain on hold.
Commodity angle – Despite an extremely challenging year in 2015 – the Bloomberg Commodity Index fell 25% – there doesn’t appear to be immediate relief on the horizon. Our commodities team remains bearish across most base metals, and broadly across the commodities complex.
Currencies – We see the Australian dollar biased lower over the next three-to-six months on the back of US Federal Reserve tightening and the outlook for commodity prices and Chinese growth. We forecasting the currency to fall to US$0.67 in the first quarter of CY16, versus the consensus view US$0.70. Our relatively more bearish view on the Australian currency is an important factor in our overweight call on US-dollar earners, particularly in sectors such as health care.

MEMBERS WIRE
February is upon us already “wow” doesn’t time fly. I’m settling in to my role now and I’m beginning to get to know a few more of you by name. Remembering names is not one of my strongest points and as it’s slightly golf related I’ll give you an example.
Having just moved into a property in West Pymble, Sydney
NSW, I met my new neighbour through a hole in the fence I
was fixing. After introducing ourselves I thought I will never
remember his name so I thought I would associate his name
with someone I knew (not personally). So for the next 6-7
months when we come across each other I would greet him
with a confident “Hi Sandy. How are you today”. I suppose
finally he thought he had better put me straight & he said
“By the way my name is not Sandy, it is Lyle”
Sandy Lyle - Professional Golfer Alexander Walter Barr “Sandy” Lyle, MBE is a Scottish professional golfer. Lyle has won two major championships during his career. Along with Nick Faldo and Ian Woosnam, he became one of Britain’s top golfers during the 1980s. He spent 167 weeks in the top-10 of the Official World Golf Ranking from his debut in 1986 to 1989.
I digress, let’s get back to Kitchen & have a look at what is
happening in February. Firstly, member’s drinks. This Friday
coming I really wanted to do traditional British fish and
chips. Yes “homemade chips”. I’ve tried to come by some
Cod or Haddock, but unfortunately I would have to purchase
too large a quantity to make it worthwhile, so my best option
which is of the same taxonomic order, is Hake from the deep
waters off New Zealand.
We look forward to seeing you from 2nd March on
Wednesday nights as well with the start of Wednesday night
dining off our a la carte menu.
TASTE
Did you know The sensation of taste can be categorized
into five basic tastes: sweetness, sourness, saltiness,
bitterness, and umami (How many of you have heard the
word “umami” I used to think it was a Japanese seaweed).
For a full definition of taste, google it and you will appreciate
that us Chefs really do have a job on our hands satisfying
everyone as each of us are unique to our own particular
taste sensations.
Anyway for those that were lucky enough to be at our 2nd
degustation dinner from the feedback I received I believe
that I certainly managed to tickle a few of your taste buds
that night. Thanks again for your continued support and I
have provided a Thai recipe for you to make and wet your
appetite in preparation to joining us on the 10th.
