PROS MUST PLAN(Continued from page 34)

(5) An opportunity to show the pro'sown sincere personality and competence inmaking the sales transaction a matter ofservice rather than the store method ofcold exchange of cash for merchandise.

Check Up Pro trong PointsIn preparing himself to get the drop on

budding competition the pro will be wiseto go over his entire membership list andsee just what he knows about each memberand the member's game, equipment andneeds.

It will surprise many a pro to be re-minded by such a survey that he doesn'tknow as much as he should about a lot ofhis comparatively new members and thegolfing prospects in the new members'families.

The pro's very strong point of expertfitting of clubs has been neglected duringthe long period when clubs that preciselyfit haven't been available. Players havebeen so eager to get new clubs they'd buyalmost anything they could find.

Many of the older and wealthier mem-bers-have clubs that are too heavy andhave shafts that are too stiff. Actuallyone reason for a club having a first class

professional is to attend to rectifying suchcases as these outgrown clubs. The prohas to handle these cases with discreetjudgment but if he doesn't look into themhe's going to lose sales-and his memberswho go elsewhere won't be fitted properly. It will be a loss all around-except to thestores.

I've mentioned the shop arrangementand stock as being a vital matter to theyounger professional but the older pro-fessional too can well spend some timeconsidering the price range of his shopstock and keeping his displays constantlywith "that new look."

This year far more than in years pastthe pro has to think of what he's got inselling points that the stores haven't got.And the pro has to make sure that themember is made keenly aware of thesuperior points of pro shop stocks andservice. You can't expect the member togo to any trouble making the discoveriesfor himself.

If a pro loses out in competition withstores in the battle for golf business thatwill begin in earnest this year he can'tcomplain that luck was against him. He'llhave to blame himself for overlooking thesame sort of smart planning and work thestore would do if it had the inside track ongolf business that the pro logically has.
