Liphook Golf Club

14

Liphook is a traditional golf club with one of the best courses in the country. Opened in 1923, the course was soon recognised bythe R&A as an exemplary inland heathland course and is also an early example of strategic design for golf courses.

This section provides information about the course and clubhouse. There is a brief history of Liphook Golf Club and a section onBohunt Manor Golf Club which was founded in the same year as Liphook and shares the course and facilities.

By today’s standards, Liphook is not a long course having both an SSS and Par of 70, measuring just 6295 yards from the championship tees and 6188 yards from the medal tees. The course has fi ve par 4 holes of over 400 yards and three par 5’s. It’s tight fairways, lined with an abundance of heather, gorse and trees, put a premium on accuracy but its biggest defence are its greens, true and fast with subtle breaks and burrows. They are among the best in southern England. With its undulating fairways, heather, gorse and trees the course is outstandingly beautiful. There is a profusion of rhododendrons in the spring. Well manicured throughout the year, the course retains its heathland character with fast-running fairways and greens.

Page 15: Golf Guide to Hampshire

“among the best in southern England”

15

The Liphook course was designed at a turning point in the architecture of golf courses. The Company appointed Arthur Croome tolay out the course; in doing so it was opting for a supporter of a new philosophy – the ‘strategic’ as opposed to the ‘penal’ schoolof design.

A partner in the same design fi rm was Tom Simpson who became a member of Liphook and Master of the Green. Tom was responsible for a number of additions to the design of the course, carried out in the spirit of a ‘strategic’ course. Subsequently, the design of the course has changed relatively little. In 1949, the order of the two halves was reversed to accommodate the new club-house built ten years later close to the original 10th hole.

Club committees have from time to time invited course architects to survey the course and minor alterations have been made toaccommodate changes in golfi ng techniques and technologies.

Stoneham Golf Club

18

Laid out in a beautiful undulating piece of heathland on the northern boundary of Southampton, Stoneham Golf Club has always presented a good challenge to all standards of golfers.

Accurate positioning is more important than length, meaning brain will always be rewarded more than brawn.

Every hole is different with the front nine going out anti-clockwise before the back nine winds clockwise inside of it.

The undulations on the course mean that you rarely get a fl at lie & small greens mean that your short game will get a good test ifyour approach shots are a little wayward.

The 100’ climb up the 18th, which also plays in to the prevailing wind, means that the refreshments awaiting you in the clubhouseare always very welcome.

Page 19: Golf Guide to Hampshire

a beautiful undulating piece of heathland

19

The challenge that Stoneham presents means that it has hosted a number of top amateur & professional events; the Brabazontwice as well as the inaugural Dunlop Masters which is now known as the British Masters.

In September 2012 we will be hosting the fi nals of the English Champion Club, so 136 of the top amateurs in the country will becoming to test themselves over the course.

This is in addition to our own Pro-Am in July when 150 amateurs & 50 professionals from the South East of England will be playing fora prize fund in excess of £10,000.

Stoneham Golf Club is right up there with the very best in the county. A course for the technical minded golfer, the naturalbackdrops of trees and landscape can easily distract any who dare show a slight lapse of concentration to this wonderful 6000+yard golfing heaven.

Tylney Park Golf Club

24

The Rotherwick Course at Tylney Park is an example of the very best inland golf available in Britain. The course is set in 200 acres ofHampshire parkland which is registered by English Heritage as a protected park and garden.

In 2003, a leading fi rm of golf architects were asked to re-design the golf course in such a way that would do justice to a site whichhas long been felt could unlock more potential as one of the fi nest parkland settings in the south of England.

Situated next to Tylney Hall Hotel and close to Basingstoke and Farnham, the golf course gives players of all ability a great golfexperience.

Whether you are looking for membership, somewhere to bring a society or just a great day’s golf, Tylney Park Golf Clubis the place to come.

North Hants Golf Club

26

Home since 1957 of the famous Hampshire Hog and a recent open qualifying venue, North Hants is one of Hampshire’s outstanding courses with a reputation of having some of the fi nest and fastest greens in the South of England. Located less than 5 minutes from the M3 on the Surrey/Hampshire border, it is a true heathland gem where visitors always receive a warm welcome.

As a course it stands up to the rigorous comparison with some of it’s perhaps more famous neighbours in Surrey and Hampshire. AJames Braid layout that was improved by the legendary Harry Colt in 1913, the course is a superb example of a mature heathlandlayout with a delightful mix of heather and tall trees bordering each impressively manicured fairway.

The modern welcoming clubhouse which serves great food ensures that golfers, members and guests fully enjoy their visit. Aboveall North Hants is a friendly, informal, non-stuffy environment that belies it’s 108 years of existence makes a great place in which to enjoy your day’s golf.
