    The history of golf in India can be divided into 4 phases:

    1. White Man's Sport until 1947

    2. Old Man's Game until 1980

    3. Rich Man's Pastime until 1990

    4. Emergence of Indian professional golf players in 1990's

    India First country outside Great Britain.

    The Royal Calcutta Golf Club 1829.

    59years before USA & Europe.

    Till the 50s golf clubs were affiliated to Royal CalcuttaGolf Club.

    In 1954 a training scheme under George Willard.

    1955, a group of golfers got together to form the Indian

    Golf Union as the controlling body for the game.

    1958 - Indian Championship was moved away from theRoyal Calcutta Golf Club & played alternately at Delhi,

    Bombay and Calcutta.

    1964 - India Open Golf Championship, which was firstplayed in Delhi, won by the Australian golfer, PeterT

    hompson.

    Indian Golf Union

    Formed on 20th December 1955.

    Starting with only6 golf clubs at thebeginning, now194 golf clubs and manymore under planning.

    The Indian Golf Union is the apex body of golf in the country.Responsible for the promotion and development of golf in India.

    Starting with only six golf clubs at the beginning, we boast of194golf clubs and many more under planning.

    The IGU holds 12 14 categorized tournaments

    Mr AD Vickers was the first President of the IGU.

    India started participating in the World Cup (Eisenhower Cup)from its inception in 1958 has continued till date.

    The National Golf Academy has formally being inaugurated on 26

    Nov 08 at the Chandigarh Golf Association Range in Chandigarh.

    IGU regularly conducts Coaching Programs.

    A structured Junior porgramme under the able guidance of Mr

    Dominic Wall was also launched.

    IGU also brought the Referees school for the first time to India in2002.

    Interesting Facts of Indian Golf

    The First Indian Open was held in 1964.

    Ruda Valji and Shadi Lal were invited to participate in the WorldCup Qualifying event at Singapore in 1969.

    The Indian Open joined the Asian Golf Circuit in 1970.

    Mrs NM Desai became the first Indian to win the Ladies All-IndiaAmateurs in 1970.

    Lakshman Singh, Rajeev Mohta, Rishi Narain and Amit Luthrawon the gold medal in team golf at the IX Asian Games in Delhi.

    Ali Sher, won the Indian Open in 1991,1993 and golf startedgetting respectable space in the sports pages of Indian media and

    hearts of fans.

    19-year old Rashid Khan, 16-year old Ashbeer Saini, and

    16-year old Chikkarangappa were presented with the secondRolex Excellence Awards at a ceremony held in theDelhi Golf Club Friday, March 5th.

    There is huge expectations not only from these youngster but

    also from others to excel in the sport and increase our medal tallyin the 2016 Olympics as golf is been included in it.
