The Eastern Panhandle region located
between Maryland and Virginia is an
interesting mix of historical sites, therapeutic
spas, and thrilling, live thoroughbred racing.
History buffs will enjoy a visit to the
well-preserved Shepherdstown, the oldest
town in the state and Harpers Ferry National
Historic Park, the site of abolitionist John
Brown’s failed attack on slavery. It’s also
the national headquarters for the famed
Appalachian Trail. A number of mineral
springs provide healing waters in the eclectic
town of Berkeley Springs. And the region
boasts gaming excitement at Hollywood
Casino at Charles Town Races. The casino
offers year-round live thoroughbred racing,
more than 5,000 video slot machines and a
variety of tables games. And the golf offerings
in this northeastern part of the state are just
as varied and provocative.
The casual Woods Resort in Hedgesville
features two scenic 18-hole courses, a spa,
restaurant, and on-site condos. The
Mountain View course wanders around a
wooded plateau along Third Hill Mountain
which dominates its views. Carved from a
forest, Mountain View's fairways are framed
by dogwood, maple, oak, and pine trees.
Most holes play flat and fair, but several
water hazards and the medium-sized greens
prove challenging. The most difficult hole
is number 6, a 415-yard, par 4, requiring
an approach shot over a canyon to a
well-bunkered green. The Mountain View
course rates 4 stars from Golf Digest’s Places
to Play, an annual survey of subscribers,
considered one of the most reliable rating
sources in the industry. The Woods Resort’s
Stony Lick mid-length course is well
maintained and has medium-sized greens.
Water hazards also come into play to create
a challenge on several of its holes.

Cacapon Resort State Park, Berkeley Springs
Minutes from the Woods Resort sits the
first of five state parks with golf courses,
Cacapon Resort State Park, home to a Robert
Trent Jones Sr. designed layout. At 2,300 feet
above sea level, set between two mountain
ranges, the challenging championship golf
course makes prime use of the rolling
foothills at the base of the ridge. There are
three ponds on the course which come into
play on four holes. The course has several
other water hazards in the form of small
streams coming from the mountain side.
The course is known for a double green that
is over 100 yards wide. Golf Digest has named
the course the number one municipal course
in West Virginia, as well as in the top ten
overall in the state. The course has a
4 star rating from Golf Digest’s Places to Play.
This state park resort offers a nostalgic
48-room lodge with restaurant, plus a
12-room group lodge known as The Old
Inn. It was the first lodging in the state
park system.
Also in the region is the mostly
undiscovered Locust Hill Golf Course
near Charles Town. This 18-hole scenic
layout continuously receives 4 stars from
Golf Digest’s Places to Play.

The Hatfield-McCoy Mountains Region
is located in the southwestern corner of
West Virginia along the Kentucky border. Its
mountainous topography has allowed golf
course architects to create challenging layouts.
It’s this same rolling terrain which has made
this region of West Virginia a mecca of sorts
for adrenaline junkies, as home to the well-
known Hatfield-McCoy Trails. This is not a
golf trail though, this is a system of trails for
all-terrain vehicles or ATVs. As one of the
largest off-highway vehicle trail systems in the
world, Hatfield-McCoy Trails stretch more
than 500 miles and offer something for
every skill level. Trails range from the scenic
mountain views of Pinnacle Creek, to the
tight and twisting trails of Bearwallow. Many
trails connect to West Virginia's “ATV friendly
towns” where visitors can grab a bite to eat
and experience true Southern hospitality.
The region was named for the famous post
Civil War decade-long feud between the
Hatfield and McCoy families. Labor battles
are also part of the mountainous region’s
history, with conflict between coal miners and
mining companies in the 1920s. With mines
located throughout, the importance of coal
from a lifestyle and historical perspective
permeates the region. In fact, the Coal
Heritage Museum is located in Madison and
a re-enactment of one of those labor disputes,
turned bloody battle, is held annually in the
small town of Matewan.
The nearby Twisted Gun Golf Club in
Wharncliffe is appropriately known as the
jewel of the coal fields. This links-style course
is placed on a former mine site in southern
Mingo county. With forgiving fairways and
smooth greens, the course has four sets of tees,
playing from 7,015 yards from the back
tees to only 5,155 yards from the forward
tees. Twisted Gun was recognized by

in the country, ranking 17th of courses that
the public can play for under fifty dollars.
The small town of Lavalette is home to two
18-hole golf courses. Sugarwood Golf Club is
a championship layout. Its front nine has tree-
lined fairways and water coming into play
on three holes. A railroad track runs through
the middle of the course, but it seldom gets
used. The back nine has three lakes coming
into play. Its signature hole is number 13, a
171-yard, par 3, which requires an accurate
tee shot to an undulating, island green.
Twin Silos at Lavalette is a hilly course
featuring water hazards, mature trees, and
sand bunkers incorporated into its design.
Strategically placed ponds come into play on
at least eight holes. This well-maintained
course also boasts impeccable landscaping.
The signature hole is number 9, a 350-yard,
par 4, featuring a double green.

The Metro Valley Region of West Virginia
is home to the state’s two most populous
cities, Charleston, the state capital and
Huntington, home to Marshall University.
Both metropolitan areas offer a variety of
cultural activities and dining choices. The
golf courses in the region are traditionally
maintained and take advantage of the rolling
hills and waterways throughout.
A suburb of the capital city, South
Charleston is home to Little Creek Golf
Course. Established in 1921, it boasts a
challenging 6,096 yard layout, which winds
over and around beautiful mountains,
demanding a variety of shots and placing a
premium on accuracy off the tee.
The Kanawha County Park & Recreation
Commission operates two golf courses in the
Charleston area. Big Bend Golf Course is
an 18-hole championship golf course located
in Tornado. The county-owned course was
designed with every skill level in mind. The
fairways are tree-lined, and water comes into
play on three holes. Some of the greens are
large and have enough slope to test putting
skills. The Coal River flows alongside part of
the course and adds to the beautiful scenery.
Coonskin Park features the county’s
18-hole, par 3 golf course and driving range.
This executive course was built on flat terrain
among rolling hillsides. The course is open
in places and challenging in others as the
tree-lined fairways can be quite tight.
There are small, target greens on some holes
and mounding throughout. The Elk River
flows alongside the course on the back nine.
The most difficult hole is number 13, a 295-
yard, par 4, featuring a dogleg left fairway.
The region is also home to the Mardi Gras
Casino Resort, conveniently located off
Interstate 64 just west of Charleston, offering
live greyhound racing, table games and slots.

The Mid-Ohio Valley Region of the state
is bordered by Ohio, with the wide Ohio
River separating the two states. Rolling
hills and valleys define the Mid-Ohio
Valley Region, providing an abundance of
outdoor activities. These include boating,
fishing, mountain biking, birding, canoeing,
camping and, of course, golf.
A major metropolis for the region is
Parkersburg. The city's rich heritage, much
of it involving the early oil and gas industry,
is presented at several museums and historic
sites. Most notable among these is the
Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park,
home to a 7,000 square foot mansion built
in 1798. It’s preserved in its original glory
and open for tours, providing a snapshot of
what life was like for the wealthy barons in
the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
Parkersburg is home to two publicly-
accessible courses. Worthington Golf Club
was built on relatively flat terrain, so it’s a
favorite among walkers. A creek, which
winds throughout the layout, provides a
challenge on several holes. The South Hills
Golf Club is a championship 18-hole design
with each hole offering its own unique
set of challenges. Measuring just under 6,500
yards from the back tees with spacious
landing areas strategically accented by
both fairway and green-side bunkers,
accurate shot-making is a must. Water
hazards are encountered on several of the
holes. A meandering stream flows through-
out most of the course.
Greenhills Country Club in Ravenswood
offers one of the areas more challenging
layouts. The 18-hole championship course
has a lengthy, yet wide open, front nine
and a hilly, shorter and tighter back nine.
The course boasts some of the best main-
tained greens in the state.

Golf Club of West Virginia, Waverly
The 18-hole Golf Club of West Virginia
in Waverly features rolling fairways, well-
manicured greens and a player-friendly
layout. The course, which opened in 1959,
was constructed on hilly terrain but provides
generous landing areas in the fairways.
Water hazards, in the form of a large lake
and four small ponds, come into play on six
holes. The course was cut out of a forest so
many of the fairways are tree-lined. The
signature hole is number four, a 541-yard,
par 5, featuring a unique green that is
shaped like the state of West Virginia.

Tucked halfway between the two
panhandle regions is the Mountaineer
Country Region. Morgantown, home to
seven golf courses, is golf-central for the
region. It’s located just an hour south of
Pittsburgh. As home to West Virginia
University, the town offers lots of nightlife
and dining options, as well as other outdoor
activities, such as mountain biking, rafting
and fishing.
Lakeview Resort in Morgantown offers
two championship golf courses, a full service
spa, two restaurants, a 187-room hotel with
standard guestrooms and suites, as well
as 52 two-bedroom, fully-equipped condos
alongside one of the courses. The resort’s
two 18-hole courses are distinctly different.
The historic Lakeview Course opened its
first nine holes in 1950 and the second nine
in 1954. The Lakeview Course is rated 4 stars
by Golf Digest’s Places to Play and has been
rated among the top 100 public courses in
America. The course offers an intricate
tree-lined design, featuring large undulating
greens, tight fairways and scenic views.
The Lakeview Course boasts two signature
holes - the 564-yard 7th which features a
180-foot vertical drop from tee to green and
offers beautiful views of Cheat Lake and the
620-yard 18th which is one of the most
challenging par 5s you’ll ever encounter. The
green has never been reached in two.
The newer Mountainview Course was
designed by Bryan Ault and opened in 1985.
The course winds through the foothills
of the Allegheny Mountains, is very hilly
and challenging, and its medium-sized
greens have some undulation. It’s rated
3 1/2 stars by Golf Digest’s Places to Play.
Also in the greater Morgantown area
is Alpine Lake Resort in Terra Alta. The
18-hole course at this laid back resort is

challenging with narrow fairways and small
greens, some of which are elevated. Water
only comes into play on two holes, but it
does so with gusto on the 10th hole as
the green is surrounded by water on three
sides. The Alpine Lake Resort, which
features an on-site motel for convenient and
value-priced golf packages, was chosen by
Golf Traveler magazine as being a top-50
"scenic & friendly" destination in the U.S.
The Mountaineer Region also boasts two
of the top-rated private courses in the state.
Pikewood National in Morgantown was
named the “Best New Private Course in
America” when it opened in 2009 and is
currently ranked 3rd in the state by Golf
Digest. The Pete Dye Club in Bridgeport is
named “Best in State” by Golf Digest and it’s
the only course in West Virginia on GOLF
Magazine’s 2011 ranking of the “Top 100
Courses in the U.S.” Other accolades for the
course include being ranked 10th on
GolfWeek’s “Top 100 Modern Courses” and
landing at number 45 on “America’s 100
Greatest Courses” by Golf Digest in 2011.
The Pete Dye Club was built on 250 acres
atop and around a reclaimed coal mine. The
famed architect Pete Dye was involved in
every aspect of the design and layout. And
although Dye courses are notoriously
difficult, as a members-only course, he
tamed it down just a bit here so that golfers
of all skill levels can enjoy. Yet it’s still
challenging enough to have hosted a
Nationwide Tour event for several years.

The newest and most upscale state park
resort is located in the Mountain Lakes
Region of central West Virginia. Stonewall
Resort sits serenely on the shores of
Stonewall Jackson Lake in Roanoke, WV.
Overnight lodging options here include a
198-room lodge and deluxe lakeside cottages.
The resort also boasts an 18-hole Arnold
Palmer signature golf course, state-of-the-art
health and fitness facilities with indoor
swimming pool, full-service spa, conference
facilities, and two restaurants. Outdoor
amenities include a marina with boat
launch, fishing and pontoon boat rentals,
swimming pool, and hiking and biking trails
inside the Stonewall Resort State Park.
The Palmer Course at Stonewall Resort
boasts narrow, tree-lined fairways to pedestal
greens with lots of elevation changes in
between. And it may just be the most highly
acclaimed publicly-accessible tract in the
state, having been named one of GOLF
Magazine's "Top 10 New Courses You Can
Play" and Golf Digest’s second “Best New
Course in America” when it opened.
Celebrating ten years of operation, it’s
currently ranked number two in the state by
Golfweek’s “Best Courses You Can Play” and
listed at number eight on Golf Digest’s “Best
in State” rankings. Stonewall Resort’s course
also landed 42nd on Golfweek's “Top 100
Resort Courses.”
Golf writer, Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh
Post-Gazette described The Palmer Course
best a few years after it opened: “The course
has just about everything. Par 3s that play over
water, par 4s that cut across wetlands and have
subtle elevation changes and par 5s that weave
through hardwoods and evergreens and
around mounded sand bunkers. The 183-yard
second hole might be the best par 3 in West
Virginia; and the elevated tee shot at No. 13, a

view from the new Adirondack-style

overlooks the lodge and lake.”
The region also boasts several challenging
9-hole courses, including Riverbend Golf
Club in Buckhannon and Cherry Hill
Country Club in Richwood. Elevation
changes and stone bridges add character
to the picturesque setting of Riverbend
Golf Club. The course is surprisingly
difficult considering the fairways are flat
and the greens are medium speed. Cherry
Hill Country Club is located in a rural
area on Hinkle Mountain. It’s a fun test of
golf with wide-open fairways and small,
target greens. Palmer Course at Stonewall Resort, Roanoke

The New River-Greenbrier Valley Region
is located in the southern part of the state. It’s
home to Winterplace Ski Resort, the New
River Gorge Bridge, a 1700-foot span which
is the longest steel arch bridge in the Western
Hemisphere, and Tamarack, a unique
cooperative project in Beckley which houses
a collection of local arts and crafts and
indigenous foods for sale.
In the New River-Greenbrier Valley
Region, the renowned Greenbrier Resort
beckons. The resort’s first course, The Old
White, was built in 1913 and recently
underwent a restoration back to the original
layout envisioned by renowned architect,
C.B. Macdonald. In 2011, it was announced
that The Old White Course was now The
Old White TPC, joining the most
prestigious golf courses in the nation within
the PGA TOUR's The Tournament Player's
Club Network. And in that vein, The Old
White TPC will once again play host to The
Greenbrier Classic, a PGA TOUR, FedEx
Cup event the first weekend of July 2013.
The resort’s second course, The
Greenbrier, was redesigned by Jack Nicklaus
in anticipation of hosting the 1979 Ryder
Cup. Both Golfweek and GOLF Magazine
recently named it the top course in the state
in their respective public categories.
The Greenbrier Resort is listed as a
National Historic landmark, with its
classical architecture, beautifully manicured
landscapes, plus a level of guest service
which harkens back to bygone days. The
resort ranks fifth in Golf Digest’s list of "Best
Golf Resorts” and two of the courses are on
Golfweek’s list of “Best Casino Courses.” In
addition to the three award-winning golf
courses, a variety of recreational activities are
available, including indoor and outdoor
tennis courts and a 40,000-square-foot spa.

The most exciting addition is the resort’s
new 103,000 square-foot casino. It’s open to
resort guests and members only. The Casino
Club at The Greenbrier provides world-class
gaming, including table games and slots,
plus live entertainment, international cuisine
and unique shopping outlets, all located
beneath the resort grounds. This historic
resort offers traditional guestrooms and
suites, as well as guest and estate houses for
golf groups to choose. The Greenbrier is
indeed a special place for golfers to
experience Southern hospitality, exciting
nightlife and the history of the game.
The Resort at Glade Springs is also
located in the New River-Greenbrier Valley
Region and boasts three championship
courses. Designed by noted architect George
Cobb, the aptly-named Cobb Course
features rolling fairways framed by mature
forest leading up to some of the largest
greens and bunkers you’ll ever play. The
resort’s Stonehaven Course features non-
returning nines and some of the most
beautiful landscape around. It’s currently
rated 4 stars by Golf Digest and both it and
the Cobb Course are in the top ten of

Golf Digest’s best in state list. The recently
opened Woodhaven Course offers dramatic
views overlooking Glade’s Creek and
mountainous terrain and offers a unique
complement to the other two courses.
Lodging options at Glade Springs include
rooms and suites in the Inn; two-room
Executive Suites; four to six bedroom
Chestnut Hill Lodges; and two and three
bedroom Villas or Manor Houses, which
allow golf groups to choose one bedroom, a
floor of four bedrooms, or the entire house.
Grandview Country Club in Beaver
provides many elevation changes and great
views of the countryside. The front nine is a
bit flat, while the back is much hillier. Water
comes into play on several holes. This
medium-length layout has three sets of
teeboxes for a fun, challenging experience.
Additionally, two of the five state parks
with golf courses are located in the region.
Pipestem Resort State Park has two golf
courses. The 18-hole championship course
overlooks the Bluestone Canyon and the
9-hole short course is a challenging collection
of par 3s. This state park resort boasts modern
cottages and the hotel-style McKeever Lodge,
overlooking the canyon. Nearby is Twin Falls
State Park in Mullens. Water comes into play
on 15 of the 18 holes here. Strategy rather
than strength is called for on the George
Cobb layout. Twin Falls offers a 48-room
mountaintop lodge and 14 comfortable
vacation cottages. Both state park courses in
the region are given the prestigious 4 stars by
Golf Digest’s Places to Play.

The Potomac Highlands Region of West
Virginia is bordered by Virginia to the east
and Maryland to the north. The Allegheny
Mountains are most prominent in this
region, which make it a draw for skiers and
snowboarders during winter months. This
same terrain has allowed golf course
architects to create challenging layouts.
The Gary Player-designed Raven Golf
Club at Snowshoe Mountain Resort is
ranked the third best public course in the
state and one of the best resort courses in the
nation by Golfweek, plus it lands in the top
ten of “Best in State” by Golf Digest. In
designing this course, Player stuck close to
the lay of the land. The front nine winds
tightly through a hardwood forest and
around several lakes, and then the layout
climbs higher for the back nine, with
cliff-side tee boxes offering scenic beauty and
challenge. Although its slope rating doesn’t
adequately reflect it, the course is one of the
toughest in the state.
Golf packages are available at The Inn at
Snowshoe but condos and townhomes are
also available. Plus the village area of
Snowshoe Mountain Resort has a variety of
shopping, dining and nightlife options.
One of West Virginia’s hidden gem
golf courses is located in the town
of Franklin, The Highlands Golf Club
at Fisher Mountain. Fisher Mountain offers
magnificently unspoiled mountain views,
