Maple Leafs Set To Tee Off 2009 Season

GOSHEN, Ind. – The Goshen College men’s golf team showed some signs of improvements in 2008 under then first-year head coach Josh Hire. Hire, a local PGA Professional has brought a renewed sense of pride and passion to the strug-gling program. A season ago, the hard work paid off for the first time as the Maple Leafs knocked 40 strokes off their season best that cul-minated in the team title at the Goshen College Invitational. This year’s team looks to take the next

step, but will have to do it without top of the lineup junior Taylor Ten Harmsel, who suffered a broken foot this summer. Despite the loss, Hire has remained positive about the work his team has put in. “I am feeling good about where the guys are this fall,” he said. “They are working hard and I’m proud of the effort they are putting in. Hire will continue to look to the rap-idly improving Phil Shenk to lead the squad. “Phil is very consistent and doesn’t get into trouble on the course,” Hire explained. “He also has an outstanding short game.” The biggest addition to the team is freshman Matt Nafzinger. “Matt has been a nice addition. He is a long hit-ter and has the desire to improve.” While Hire remains realistic with his goals, he is confident the program is head-ing the right direction as players continue to progress along with the program.

Local Professional Golf Association of America (PGA) head professional Josh Hire begins his second season as the Head Men’s Golf Coach at Goshen College in 2009. Hire has spent the past five-plus years as the head professional at Timber Ridge Golf Club in Millersburg, Indiana, which has served as the host to the Goshen College Invitational. “I look forward to fostering integrity, honesty, and hard work in young adults through the Goshen College golf program,” said Hire, who took over for four-year head coach Cory Furman last July. “I intend to use my skills as a golf instructor to encourage growth both on and off the course.” At Timber Ridge, Hire does individual instruction, hosts and organizes golf matches and tournaments, and works with local high schools to initiate and expand their golf programs. “Josh brings an expertise that will no doubt provide the excellence we are looking for in our golf program,” said Demant. Josh and his wife Jennifer have been married five years and live in Millersburg. They are expecting their first child this fall.

The official tournament and practice home of Maple Leaf golf, Timber Ridge Golf Club is located just 15 minutes from campus. Recently hired head coach Josh Hire, has been the Professional Golf Association (PGA) pro for the Millersburg course for the past three-plus years. Its narrow fairways and fast greens make for an exciting round of golf. Complete with driving range, chipping green, practice bunker, warm up putting green, and pro shop, Timber Ridge Golf Club is an ideal location for the Goshen College Golf Team.

Goshen College golf team members – as well as students, staff, faculty, and community members – don’t have to go far to get in a few holes as the Highline Golf Course sits right on campus. Three stand-alone par-3 holes stretch from the softball field to the south end of the GC Athletic Complex and around the south end of the soccer field. The small, elevated greens will test the accuracy of a player’s short irons whether they are taking a lunch break or practicing for their next tournament round.
