GOLF BUSINESS CANADA Winter 2004 54 55 Winter 2004 GOLF BUSINESS CANADA Golfmax News The NGCOA Canada and hand-held GPS provider GolfLogix, the world’s largest provider of handheld Global Positioning Systems (GPS) for golf courses, announced recently that a three-year agreement has been signed, making GolfLogix the preferred supplier of handheld GPS technology for the Golfmax Purchasing Program. Under this program, members of NGCOA Canada are provided with dis- counted pricing on the GolfLogix System as well as free installation. After test marketing the product at several NGCOA Canada Chapter Golfmax Tournaments last fall, we received tremendous response from our members,” states Peter Leyser, Director of Golfmax. “The feedback received indicated that the GolfLogix In mid-summer 2004 Golfmax Inc. decided to convert many of the Golfmax Internet applications to a points-based “loyalty” format. This was a big decision for us. The following summarizes what was behind this decision and what it means for NGCOA Canada members. Loyal subjects Loyalty programs exist in virtually every retail sector. These programs come in many different flavours, but the market- ing premise is the same – offer rewards to your customers that can only be obtained through repeat business. The Web has become an integral player in the implementation of these increasingly prevalent programs. Consumers are filling their wallets with loyalty cards of all types. Credit card companies and retailers are competing hard to gain loyalty business. Golfmax Inc. investigated several loyalty programs used in many retail sectors and analyzed how the golf industry and our company could benefit from this trend. We concluded that golf fits best as an incentive within other, pre-existing loyalty programs, which do not currently have a golf component. We saw a significant “grow the game” opportunity and a big role for Golfmax Inc. The primary objective behind the conversion of our Internet applications to a points based format, therefore, was to better position golf as a reward incentive for non-golf related loyalty programs. The working model To accomplish this we have made changes in GolfmaxOnline, our marketing and business application for NGCOA Canada members. Any NGCOA Canada golf course can now post offers which are automatically translated into point values and made available to golfers through Golfmax.ca, our consumer website. When an offer is redeemed, the issuing course is immediately credited for cash payment through their GolfmaxOnline account. We also made changes to the Golfmax.ca website. NGCOA CANADA NEWS

At Cardinal Golf Club, as at most public courses, the most pressing issues normally revolve around concerns like the number of rounds played, pace of playand a host of other problems we often see as larger than life.

For at least one day in mid-September on a golf course in Kettleby,Ontario, all of that changed. For two Cardinal Golf Course employees in particular things changed forever.

Trevor Clark, Cardinal’s West Course Superintendent was going about hisdaily routine when he looked back from the 9th green and saw a man down.Trevor immediately went to the man’s aid and found him to have no vital signs.Trevor used his two-way radio to call the pro shop for assistance, and RobBrandon, a member of Cardinal’s Professional staff answered the call. After calling 911, Rob quickly made his way to the scene with Cardinal’s on-site defibrillator. Trevor and Rob, both trained in the proper use of the machine, administered a shock to the man’s heart and performed CPR until emergencymedical crews arrived on the scene, saving the man’s life.

There is no question the heart attack victim in this case was extremelylucky - his attack took place in close proximity to the clubhouse, Trevor happened to be working on that very hole and had open communication to callfor assistance. Add to this that two level headed, quick thinking individuals wereon hand to administer aid, and our victim’s fate was much improved. While notall heart attack victims will be saved, the successful intervention at Cardinalserves as an example of what is possible with today’s technology.

As all operators across the country are aware, a comprehensive Health &Safety program is now mandatory in the workplace. It was through the develop-ment of this program that Cardinal decided to go a step farther and try preparestaff for possible medical emergencies. The cost of acquiring the defibrillator

and the subsequent training on it’s use is at first glance considerable, however, saving a client’s life has made the up-front costs a non-issue.

Here at Cardinal, our two heroes have become an inspiration to us all; theyhave shown us what wonderful things we can accomplish when we have the rightequipment, the proper training and the courage to try.
