Act 1

1)

2)

The first shot begins with an extreme long shot pan of a neighborhood to communicate how extremely isolated it is, during this shot there is a voiceover sound bridge of a women suggesting that the main character is the ‘most hated man in America’, this links with the imagery as it represents how he feels so alone and shut out from society due to his abduction of his wife, this allows the audience to perceive what genre the film is from.

This follows to a sound bridge of what seems to be an interview, asking whether he killed his wife, this follows to a close up of his expression, he looks helpless, like all hope is lost; this gives the audience an idea of what the storyline is about and gets an introduction to the main character, however they are unware of whether he is the antagonist or the protagonist- is he innocent? This highlights role confusion within the character conforming to its genre.

4)

The next part of the trailer is communicated through shift in location shown through a flashback of a happy memory, hence the use of fade to black. Concurrent with this is a monologue of the Nicks wife who is missing, which is a diary entry, suggesting she has the perfect married, however this voice over seems eerie, suggesting not all is quite right, but the trailer gives nothing away.

A pan towards the man is used to show the amount of people have come to support the search for Nicks wife, he seems adamant to say he was not involved with his wife’s disappearance for reassurance, this makes him seem more guilty. A sound bridge is again used over the imagery of the crime scene, this is where the second character is introduced who is the detective on the case of his missing wife. Her personality is shown to be strict and judgmental, she is convinced he has murdered her, building tension within the plot.

6)

From this specific point not even the police is on Nick’s side they are also accusing him for the disappearance of his wife and are suggesting that he putting on an act to gain better media coverage. At this point the audience are able to see that everyone is judging nick and invading his personal space, there is no escaping, and he is stuck.

The non-diegetic music continues to be slow and eerie. From the trailer the audience are able to see that the police, his in-laws and the community are all convinced that he is a murdered. At this point in time we have not actually seen Amy yet, only a diary entry, this suggested that she may be dead, the audience are unable to sympathies’ with Nick as not even the audience know if he is capable of murder, they are also judging Nick, questioning did he do it?

7)

8)

This follows to a fade to black and the fourth character is introduced this is one of Amy’s old boyfriends from the past, he is found at the volunteer center trying to help find Amy. This gives a huge sense of the unknown why did they breakup and why is he so interested in finding her? Was he involved? There is a voice over used to communicate that Amy has many admires, so anyone could have taken her.

From the next imagery we are introduced to Amy during the build up to her disappearance, again a voice over of her diary entry is used however this one is not so joyful, it suggest that he believes that she is unloved by her husband. From this imagery the audience are able to get a sense that Amy is frightened of her husband in her own house. This again builds to the plot as this makes us believe that he was involved with her disappearance.

ACT 2

9)

10)

At this moment the next Act is represented this shows the plot getting more intense by clues that Amy has left. The trailer gets much faster suggesting a race to find where Amy is. Now that there is clues there is finally the hope in finding where she may be. Many are still convinced that Nick is involved, the audience may feel is as well due to the fact that Nick makes a sly remark about ‘solving Amy’s treasure hunt’ sounding extremely sarcastic. The audience are not revealed to what the clue is or means creating mystery.

At this point in the trailer the non-diegetic music gets much faster and intense suggesting a sudden change in the atmosphere getting much deeper and darker into the plot. This is highlighted when the detectives go into the run down part of town where she was last seen. Concurrent to this is the clip of Nick and Amy’s ex-boyfriend talking, at this moment suspense is extremely high, and it shows the plot unraveling. This then cuts back to the last scene suggesting that Amy wanted a gun, this makes the audience why she needed a gun? Was she in danger?

11)This follows to a fade to black and again showing Amy on the run up to her disappearance, she seems frustrated with the lack of communication she has with her husband, this links with what she says on the diary entry, were she says ‘I feel as though I could disappear’ this could mean two things, firstly that Nick pays her no attention that she is ignored, or that he could get rid of her. The echo is her voice suggests she is long gone and there is no finding her. She seems frightened and in despair.

ACT 312)

13)

At this part in the trailer Act 3 is introduced, this is where Nick now has the full blame for the disappearance of his wife suggesting he is a ‘sociopath’ that he has a lack of empathy. He is now the prime suspect, the whole of American is now against him, there is no escaping, and this gives a sense of entrapment.

The next imagery shows Amy’s blood, but it has been mopped up. The police are convinced that Nick has attempt to stage a crime scene, at this point the images get much quicker and shorter. At this point the audience believe that Amy is severely hurt, therefore there is a race to find her, hence the reason the clips are getting faster- time is running out. Nick is angry about this accusation, as shows an aggressive nature towards the police, could this mean he did it? This really conforms to its genre.

14)

15)

Within the next scene the 5th and the 6th character is introduced, this is nick twin sister and his solicitor, these are the only people that seem to be on his side. Through this imagery we get the sense that Nick has no hope as they suggest his case is really difficult to fight. The plot is building – what did they find in that house? Whose house is it?

A voice over is used again of an abstract from Amy’s diary, she mentions how she is frightened of her own husband, this suggests that he is behind it all. Within the last act the voiceovers become more concurrent with his wife, his sister, his solicitor, and the police. This highlights the confusion he is feeling, he doesn’t know who to listen too, or what is right or wrong at this point. He’s so deep in this muddle there is no turning back.

Within the next scene the audience are able to see the extent to which the disappearance has escalated too. This problem has become famous. This shows from the beginning that he is the most hated man in America due to the disappearance of his wife.

16)

17)

18)

At this point in the trailer the plots starts from the beginning when Nick is being interviewed. This suggests that Nick is still in the same position started with. Although the lady smiles, he is aware no one is on his side, highlighting isolation. He feels as though he has to prove his innocence.

From this imagery even the audience believe that Nick is guilty, as he puts his hands on his wife, he is portrayed in such a bad light during the trailer, that the story is siding to him being the reason for the disappearance of his wife, due to the fact he seems to display such anger towards her during the sequence.

Nick and his wife seem shocked that he is capable of him physically putting his hand on her, as though this was unexpected this makes the audience thing what else is he capable of, killing his wife? This creates a shift in narrative, Nick is seen as the antagonist, this makes the viewers feel uneasy as they are unaware of how to feel about Nick.

20)

21)

During this clip it its clear that everyone has gone against Nick they all believe he was the cause for the disappearance and even suggest that he is a ‘sociopath’, even his lawyer suggests that he makes a confession, at this point the trailer is speeding up, this highlights the chaos that Nick is feeling, and that everything is happening so quick he is unaware of what to do.

This follows the a voice bridge of numerous people blaming Nick for the disappearance of his wife, this communicates the struggle of trying to prove his innocence, it almost seems as though Nick is being suffocated with all the accusations that he cant even fight for his innocence, it almost seems as though he has given up. This follows to a sound bridge of Amy expressing that her husband could kill her. This once again highlights that Nick is guilty,
