Program GuideThis evening’s program is intended to focus our attention on Jesus Christ. The first half of the concert is designed to help us reflect on his suffering and death, and the second half on his resurrection and exaltation. The apostle Paul highlights the centrality of these events to the gospel message: “Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:1–4). The word gospel means “good news”—hence the Church’s historical description of the day Jesus died as “Good Friday.”

The concert begins with a setting of the hymn My Faith Looks Up to Thee for unaccompanied choir with soprano soloist. It sums up the purpose of this evening, to take a close look at Jesus and recognize our need for him. Psalm 22 by Felix Mendelssohn gives us a rare opportunity to hear this wonderful text set to music. Jesus himself spoke the first verse of this Psalm from the cross with the intention of helping us understand the significance of his crucifixion. The Psalm progresses from speaking of the utter forsakenness and horrors of crucifixion to proclaiming that the Lord heard the cry of the afflicted, with the result that all nations will praise the Lord. The two Psalm settings by Gustav Holst are contrasting in nature. Accompanied by string orchestra, Psalm 86 combines a prayer affirming trust in the Lord interspersed with verses of the Psalm sung by tenor and soprano soloists. For tonight’s performance of Psalm 148, words from Horatius Bonar’s hymn “O Love of God, How Strong and True” have been substituted for the original lyrics (which, incidentally, are not from Psalm 148!), providing opportunity to give triumphant praise to God for his love shown to us in Christ Jesus.

The second half of the program features the Dettingen Te Deum by George Frideric Handel. It was written to celebrate the safe return and victory of King George II from the Battle of Dettingen in 1743. It was the last time a monarch of England led troops in battle. Variously attributed to St. Augustine, St. Ambrose, or Hilary, the text of the Te Deum is an ancient hymn dating from the 4th century. A hymn of praise to the Trinity, the outline follows closely the form of the Apostles’ Creed with petitions added to the end at a later date. Written for a large orchestra including three trumpets, the overall mood is one of great rejoicing in victory over death. The pairing of this great text with Handel’s festive and triumphant music helps us begin to offer the praise which our victorious Lord so gloriously deserves!

TextsMy Faith Looks Up to Thee

Ray Palmer, 1830

My faith looks up to Thee, Thou Lamb of Calvary, Savior Divine:Now hear me while I pray, take all my guilt away,

O let me from this day be wholly Thine.

While life’s dark maze I tread, and griefs around me spread, be Thou my guide;Bid darkness turn to day, wipe sorrows tears away,

Nor let me ever stray from Thee aside.

May Thy rich grace impart strength to my fainting heart, my zeal inspire; As Thou hast died for me, O may my love to Thee

Pure, warm, and changeless be, a living fire.

When ends life’s transient dream, when death’s cold, sullen stream shall o’er me roll,

Blest Savior then, in love, fear and distrust remove;O bear me safe above, a ransomed soul.

Psalm 22

My God, my God, why, O why hast thou forsaken me? Why art thou far from helping me while I cry? My God, I cry to thee by day, but yet thou hearest not, and at night do I take no rest. But thou Lord, art holy, thou who dwellest in the praises of Israel. For our fathers trusted in thee, and as they trusted, thou didst deliver them. And they cried to thee, and were delivered, they trusted in thee, and were not confounded. But I, I am a worm, and no man, the scorn of men, and of the people despised. All they that see me laugh and scorn me, shoot out their lip, and they shake their head. He trusted in the Lord, that he would send help and deliver him, and delight in him.

I am poured out like the water, and my bones they are also all out of joint. My heart is within my body melted like unto wax. Now my strength is dried up, even like a potsherd, and to my jaw my tongue it cleaveth, me thou hast laid in the dust of death; for dogs have compassed my dwelling, and assemblies of the wicked me have enclosed; my hands and my feet they have pierced with anger, they part my garments among them, and for my vesture they cast lots.

Be not far from me, O Lord God: O my strength, hasten thee to help me; deliver thou my soul from the sword, and my darling from the dog’s power; save me from the mouth of the lion! From the horn of the unicorn thou hast heard me. I will declare thy name to my brethren, in the congregation will I praise thee.

O praise the Lord, all ye that fear him. And honor him all the seed of Jacob. Fear him, all ye that are of the seed of Israel. For he hath not despised nor abhorred the poor in affliction, neither has he hid his face from him, but when to him he cried, he heard his voice. Thee will I praise, Lord, in the great congregation; I will pay all my vows in the sight of them that fear him. The meek shall eat, they shall eat and be satisfied, and they with their hearts shall praise the Lord, that seek him, and your heart shall live forever; the ends of the world shall remember, and shall turn to the Lord their Maker. All the kindreds of the people shall worship before him; for the earth is the Lord’s and he rules over the nations.

Psalm 86

To my humble supplication, Lord, give ear and acceptation; save thy servant, that hath none help nor hope but thee alone. Send, O send relieving gladness to my soul oppressed with sadness, which, from clog and earth set free, winged with zeal, flies up to thee.

Bow down thine ear, O Lord, hear me; for I am poor and needy.Preserve my soul, for I am holy; O thou my God, save thy servant that trusteth

in thee.Be merciful unto me, O Lord; for I cry unto thee daily. Rejoice the soul of thy

servant, for unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul. For thou Lord art good and ready to forgive, and plenteous in mercy unto them

that call upon thee. Give ear, O Lord, unto my prayer, and attend to the voice of my supplication.

I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart, and I will glorify thy name forevermore.

To thee, rich in mercy’s treasure, and in goodness without measure, never failing help to those who on thy sure help repose. Heavenly tutor, of thy kindness, teach my dullness, guide my blindness, that my steps thy paths may tread which to endless bliss do lead.

Psalm 148 (O Love of God, How Strong and True)Horatius Bonar, 1858

O love of God, how strong and true, eternal and yet ever new, alleluia, alleluia!

Uncomprehended and unbought, beyond all knowledge and all thought! Alleluia!

O wide embracing, wondrous love! We read you in the sky above, alleluia, alleluia!

We read you in the earth below, in seas that swell, in streams that flow. Alleluia!

We read you best in him who came to bear for us the cross of shame; alleluia, alleluia!

Sent by the Father from on high, our life to live, our death to die. Alleluia!

We read your power to bless and save, e’en from the darkness of the grave, alleluia, alleluia!

Still more in resurrection light we read the fullness of your might. Alleluia!

Dettingen Te Deum

We praise thee, O God: we acknowledge thee to be the Lord. All the earth doth worship thee, the Father everlasting.

To thee all angels cry aloud, the heavens, and all the powers therein. To thee cherubim and seraphim, continually do cry,

Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God of Sabaoth;Heaven and earth are full of the majesty of thy glory. The glorious company of the apostles, praise thee. The goodly fellowship of the prophets, praise thee.

The noble army of martyrs, praise thee.The holy Church throughout all the world, doth acknowledge thee;

The Father of an infinite majesty;Thine honourable, true, and only Son;Also the Holy Ghost, the Comforter.Thou art the King of Glory, O Christ.

Thou art the everlasting Son of the Father.

When thou tookest upon thee to deliver man, Thou didst not abhor the Virgin’s womb.

When thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death, Thou didst open the Kingdom of Heaven to all believers.

Thou sittest at the right hand of God, in the glory of the Father. We believe that thou shalt come, to be our judge.

We therefore pray thee, help thy servants, Whom thou hast redeemed with thy precious blood.

Make them to be numbered with thy saints in glory everlasting.O Lord, save thy people, and bless thine heritage.

Govern them, and lift them up forever.Day by day we magnify thee;

And we worship thy name, ever world without end.Vouchsafe, O Lord, to keep us this day without sin.O Lord, have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us.

O Lord, let thy mercy lighten upon us, as our trust is in thee.O Lord, in thee have I trusted, let me never be confounded.
