WHY Conquered People ResistRussia is forcing her satellites to

maintain huge stand in g armies as athreat against th e West in the cold war.These countries are forced to bear thetremendous expense of the ir a rmies ata time when manpower could be usedto rebui ld the ir war -wrecked economy.Much of the industr ia l and agricultural production of Eastern Europe is beingsent to Russia as a result of cleverly

planned one-sided trade agreements belween the Soviet and her satel li te countries.

Living standards have been greatly reduced. Private business has been systematically attacked. Land owners resenthaving the ir estates broken up. Parentshave their children forcibly removed.In order to r et ain the ir ecclesiasticaloffices, the clergy has been forced toswear to uphold the State.Is it any wonde r tha t the people resist, cut down production, destroy theircrops, refuse to obey government directives?

Purge Trials Provide ScapegoatsTo keep the people's minds off the

dec lining l iving standard, Communistrulers are providing "scapegoats." Partyleaders understand enough about humanpsychology to know that people will forget many of their problems if they havesomeone else to blame for the povertythat exists.The only question is whom rhe- Communists wil l blame.

Communist parry leaders are constantly jockeying for power and control . As aresult of this rivalry, some leader, areable to gain enough power in theirhands to enforce their personal dictates.

DissensionThis struggle for power within theCommunist ranks is far more ominousthan most of you realize. It is destinedto remake the map of Europe-and ofAmerica!The mysterious controversy in Czechoslovakia is essentially between Communist gcvernrnent leaders and thosewho concrol the party, Dictator Gottwald, the head of the government,emerged supreme. Rudolf Slansky, theSecretary General of the Czech Communist Party and a dose friend of Stalinperished on the gallows along with tenco-defendants,Bur why should Slansky, who alwaysfollowed the party line from Moscow,now be delivered up by Stalin to Dictator Gottwald? It was Gottwald andnot Slansky who often deviated fromthe party and was accused of NATION

ALISM.Here is what happened behind thescenes, Stalin knew trouble was brewing. Not daring to risk the loss of Czechoslovakia's industrial potential, he sent arepresentative to Prague to settle thedifferences and keep the country behindthe Iron Curtain. Gottwald told him thatCzechoslovakia was in such serious

trouble that unless the Soviet would permit a limited nationalism, the countrycould not be depended upon to suppor tRussia.Stalin had to face realities. He knewhe couldn 't force the people to increaseeconomic and military aid while the irl iv ing standards sank lower and lower.Gottwald promised to keep product ionat its present level so long as Stalin allowed Czech Communists to run thecountry the way they wanted. But whenhe can't keep produc tion at its presentlevel, and resentment against Russiabuilds up, there will be serious trouble.How New U. S. Foreign Policy WillAffect EuropeThe new administration in Washingron is already planning a number ofvital changes in foreign policy for eastPI'n Europe, Up to now the policy ofthe government has been to containRussia-to keep her from spreading.

Our leaders have been on the defensive,lcuiug Russia make the first moves, andthen trying to block her. The conflictsin Korea and French Indo-China are adirect result of this fruitless policy.Now all this is going to be changed.

The new Secretary of State, John FosterDulles, has a new policy planned whichwill roll back the Iron Curtain.He intends to "dislocate by peacefulmeasures the internal structure of theSoviet Union." Through propaganda,the encouragement of resistance and thehelp of Radio Free Europe, our new administration plans ro liberate the countries of eastern Europe by peacefulmeans.Though it may take a few years,prophecy shows this policy will succeed!There is to arise in Europe a union often nations-dictararships-that will restore the Roman Empire for the lasttime. (Rev. 17: 12-14.) Since there arenot yel Len antidemocratic nations inEurope to form this union, some mustinevitably be liberated from behind theIron Curtain.Europe Resents U. S. InterferenceWhat our leaders have not yet learnedis rhar many Europeans resent American capital istic domination. Tiro is nota friend of America even though hewants our aid. Franco's Spain is stillfascist. Germany has not been convertedro Democracy. European countries wantour money but think we are using them

Countr ies which will be liberatedin Eastern Europe will pre tend to be ourallies only as long as we have the moneyto support them.By our new foreign policy, paradoxically, WE ARE SEALING OUR DOOM!Instead of remaining loyal to thecause of democracy, the very Europe thatwe are helping to uni te will transformitself into a third force in the world,holding the balance of power betweenEast and Wesr-a force prophecy sayswill suddenly attack and destroy theUnited States and Britain-the descendents of the House of Israel ( Isaiah47:6).

America to Be Invaded!The coming United Europe that isgoing ro astound and shock the world isdescribed in Revelation 17 as the "beast"

- t he last revival of the Roman Empire.I t will be a union of ten nations, dicta-torships, that will give their power andallegiance to a supreme authority. Theywill last until the second coming of JesusChrist (Revelation 17: 13-14).Notice that a "woman rides the"beast." Th is coming union in Europewill be under the direction of a greatfalse church, In Ephesians 5 and II Corinthians 11, a "woman" is symbolicallyused to signify a church.The coming union will be a revivalof FASCISM and NAZISM. Because thisUnited Europe will he ruled by thechurch, called "Babylon the Great," thewhole system-religious, political and

economic-is called "Babylon" in prophecy (Rev. 17).Now notice what God says throughthe prophet Isaiah about "Babylon": "Iwas wroth with my people (the UnitedStates and Great Britain), and gavethem into thine (Babylon's) hand: thoudidst show them no mercy; upon theancient hast thou very heavily laid thyyoke" (Isaiah 47: 6) .This prophecy is not speaking of ancient Babylon of Nebuchednezzar's time.It is the daughter of that Babylon (verse1) . Who -What -was Jesusbefore His Human Birth?

D ID CHRIST exist prior to his Human birth through the virginMary? Was he God? Was heactually born in HUMAN flesh? Or ...was he born of a divine mother, immaculately conceived? What does the Bibleteach on this vi tal subject?We cannot know the answers to thesequestions until we first realize just what-o r who-is God. Is God a Person . . .an Essence ... or only a Principle oran Idea?

The word "God" is grossly misunderstood. Men have always liked to "createGod in their own image" by puttingtheit own interpretat ion on the meaningof the word "God." Here-from theBible is the real meaning of this word.In Genesis 1: 1 the original Hebrewword translated "God" is "Elohirn," theplural form of the Hebrew word "EI"or "Eloah meaning mighty one. Thisword is plural-it means MORE THANONE. However, it is not a plural likeboys or girls but rather a uni-plural wordlike church or family. There is one God,but composed of MORE THANONEMEM-BER.Scripture Reveals God NOT One

PersonFirst, let's read Genesis 1:26 whichsays .. . what? Read it!"And God said, Let US make man in

OUR image, after OUR likeness . . ."Do you think God was talking toHimself? Not ice wha t God continuesto say, "And the Lord God said, Beholdthe man is become as one of us toknow good and evil ..." Notice it-

God said ". . . the man is become asONE of us ..." God could not havesaid ONE of us if there were only oneperson composing God.Now, for the final clincher, let's turnover to I Samuel 4: 8. The Philistineshad heard a grear cry which went upfrom the camp of the Hebrews whenthe ark of God had enter ed the camp. . . and they were afraid-so read on."Woe unto us! who shall deliver us outof the hand of these mighty Gods?These are the Gods that smote the

Egyptians with all the plagues in thewilderness." That certainly finishes it-THESE ARE THE GODS! Meaning plural-no t one person, but more than one,ferming and composing God who is aKINGDOM.

Is God a Trinity?If the family of God has more thanone member does the Bible reveal justhow many persons are in this family?Is it a trinity composed of three mem

bers-Father, Son and Holy Ghost?To begin with, the word "Ghost"should be translated "Spirit." When theKing James version of the Bible wastranslated in 1611, people firmly believed in ghosts. Due to this fact, thewords which should have been translated "Holy Spirit" were translated "HolyGhost," thus giving this most sacredword a wrong connotation.Christ himself, in unmistakable words,reveals just how many persons there arein the family of God. "No man (o rperson) knoweth the Son but the Father; nei ther knoweth any man the Father save the Son and he to whomsoeverthe Son will reveal him." (Matt . 11: 27.)How many persons ment ioned? Onlytwo, the Father and the Son. If therewere another member of the Godhead,he would certainly know both the Fatherand the Son, would he nor?

Now consider-is Christ the Son ofGod? As he is the Son of the Person hecalled the Father, and if the Holy Spirit is a separate person, he couldn' t be theson of the Holy Spirit could he? Andyet your Bible plainly says tha t beforeJoseph and Mary came together "...she was found with child of the HolyGhost," There it is! If the Holy Spiritwere a separate person in the family ofGod, then Jesus is the son of THAT person and NOT of the Father!

The truth is that the Holy Spirit isno t one of the Persons of the Godhead,but is the substance of which those whoare in the Godhead are composed. "Godis a Spirit ..." (John 4:24.) There isonly one Spirit which composes God

but God is a family of more than oneperson. Just as we humans are composedof flesh and blood (material substances)so the family of God is composed ofSpirit ... the Holy Spirit. Just as weuse the power of material muscle tocarry out our human plans so the familyof God (Elohim) uses the power of theHoly Spiri t to carry out the divine plan.If Jesus is now part of the family ofGod, when did he achieve that status?

How Jesus Became a Son of GodLet's examine the sta tement made in

John 1: 1. "In the beginning was theWord, and the Word was with God, andthe Word was God." In the originalGreek the "Word" is "Logos" whichmeans one who speaks-a spokesmanone who personifies the very words ofGod.According to John 1: 3, it was the"Word" which made all things. Therefore he had to exist before anything else(Eph. 3:9; Col. 1:10-19). God createdall things by Christ, who employed thepower of the Holy Spirit. The Fathergave the order to Christ who spoke thewords which were executed by the powerof the Holy Spirit.Again-we read in Malachi 3: 1. "Behold, I will send my messenger . . . eventhe messenger of the covenant." A messenger is one who brings a message-aspokesman-a "Logos,"

When this promised Messenger camehe was called Jesus. That was his humanname just as John or George or Jamesmight be your name. However whileyour parents might have named you anything that sounded good, there was areason for the name Jesus. The angeltold Joseph that he should call his nameJesus because he should save his peoplefrom their sins (Matt. 1:21) ,God always names people wha t theyare. When the Devil was a shining archangel his name was Lucifer which means"Light -bringer" or "Shining star of thedawn." When he rebelled, his namewas changed to fit his new character so

creation-in the Garden of Eden-Goddid not intend any animal flesh to beeaten. God's revelation on that point isvague, and many have argued it bothways. However, God has revealed thatcer ta in animal meats are to be eaten asfood now, in this age, and Jesus whocame to set us an example did eat fleshas well as vegetables and fruits, andso do I.What the Great Architect of YourStomach In:..tructsWhen the very first written revelationcame from God to man thru Moses, Godinstructed man as to which kinds of animal flesh man ought or ought not to eat.You will find this list in Leviticus 11.

This is not a ceremonial, r itualist ic, orsacrificial law later done away at thecrucifixion of Christ.

This is a basic l aw-a revelation fromGod to instruct man which kinds ofilesh will properly digest and assimilatein the human system, and which willnot. It is not a part of God's great SPIRIT-UAL LAW, summed up in the Ten Com-mandments.It is necessary ro understand that Godis the author of ALL law, and ther e arecountless laws in motion. There are lawsof physics and chemistry. You know ofthe law of gravity. There is the greatimmutable SPIRITUAL law to regulateman's relationship to God and to fellowman-the law of LOVE-the TenCommandments. God gave His nationIsrael civil statutes and judgmenrsNATIONAL -Iaws for the conduct ofthe national government. Is CAPITAL PUNISHMENTGod's Way?

Why doesn't God strike down euil doers and punish them?Is it His will that criminals escape punishment?

EDGAR HOOVER, head of theF.B.I., in a discussion on "Crimein America," reveals theseshocking facts: "ONE MILLION American gir ls have venereal disease; 100,000girls disappear every year i nt o whi teslavery; a major crime is committedevery twenty-two seconds; a murderevery forry minutes ." Crime and violence of every kind are increas ing byleaps and bounds in spite of the factthat America is spending millions ofdollars for law enforcement .Why? What 's wrong with the American system of law enforcement thatcrimp is no t discouraged?Instead of ignoring this problem, it's

time to face it. Jesus faced it!Christ Will Stamp Out Crime!Christ is going to return to this earthto rule the nations. He promised His

followers-you and me-tha t if weovercome sin we will rule with H im we will have authority over the nations(Rev. 2:26-27; 19:14-16). You wil l becarrying Out God's government and willneed to know God's way of preservingorder-s-of teaching people the right way,of PREVENTING crime.

How He Will Do ItTo understand God's government, we

must first study His way of governingpeople in the past. We also need tolearn how God deals with us now, andwhat He wil l do in the future. Remember, you are going to need, and use,this information!The administration of the civil gov

ernment in ancient Israel reveals God'smethod of dealing directly with unconverted, fleshly, sinning people.The government of Israel had church

and state combined. It was a physical,f lesh-born church or congregation. Theadministration of civil and religiousstatutes and ordinances was combined inancient Israel.Bea r in mind that ancient Israel wasnot p romised salvation at that time.All the promises under the old covenantwere material, for this l ife (Lev. 26:312), Since those Israelites were no t conver ted and did not have the Holy Spirit,

they could not understand spiritualthings. They were like most peopl etoday. God dealt with them in a purelyphysical manner, punishing them fortheir crimes.Th e Administration of Dea th

What Was It?Almost no one really understandsthe meaning of " the minis trat ion of

death wri tten and engraven in stones"(I I Cor. 3). Let's s tudy it.What is this ministration-administering or executing of the death penalty-which was engraved on stones?Was Paul referring to the Ten Commandments? Were the Ten Commandments engraven in whole stones?No! The ten commandments werewritten on two tables of stone, but notin whole stones.Then what was written in wholestones? Nor ire Deuteronomy 27: 1-6.Moses commanded the children of Israel

to set up great whole stones , and plaster t hem w it h plaster, and write uponthem all the words of THE CIVIL LAWwhich he had JUSt repeated to them. THEADMINISTRATION OF THESE LAWSEMBODIED THE "EYE FOR EYE, TOOTHFOR TOOTH" PRINCIPLE (Deut, 19: 21).The punishment for breaking many ofthese civil codes was DEATH. Thecarrying out of these laws was the "MINISTRATIONOf death." This was whatPaul spoke of-not the ten commandments!The ten commandments are an entirely sepa ra te and disrincr law code.The ten commandments are spirituallaws which last forever (Ps. 111: 7-8 ) .Because the principles of the ten commandments formed the basis of the civilstatutes and judgments , a violation ofthese princ ip les was punished by civilauthority ONLY INSOFAR as they werelater repeated in the civil statutes andjudgments.THE ADMINISTRATION OFDEATH WASTHE CIVIL EXECUTION OF PUNISHMENTS FOR VIOLATION OF THIS CIVILLAW CODE WIlICH MOSES S PO KE TOTHE PEOPLE.Perhaps some of these punishments

seem rather harsh to us. Rut a carefulstudy will reveal the all-wise purposebehind them. Such things as murder,kidnapping, and adulte ry were pun ishable by DEATH.How well calculated these judgmentsare. They show evildoers the enormityof sin and crime!

A Lesson fo r UsMany peop le today rake such rhingsas divorce and remarriage very l ightly.

Their human reason sees very littleharm in it. So people are ru shing to thedivorce courts to seek an easy way outof any mari tal di sagreement that mayarise. Thus, the home and family, whichare the foundations of all decent andreally happy society, are being undermined by millions of thoughtless, selfish,misguided people.Today, God calls divorce and rernarriage adultery (Mark 10:2-12). In anc ient Israel adultery was punishable byimmediate death (Deut. 22: 22) .This same provision to protect thesanctity of the home and parental authority is set forth in the law regardinga rebellious son. If he obstinately refusedto obey his parents, his life was forfeited

(Deut. 21: 20-21). A stern measure?Yes, but rhis prevented children fromgrowing up with an attitude of contemptand rebellion against everything good anddecent. Others would hear and fear. Toomany young people in America don'trespect par en ta l and government authority. And too few parents ever botherto exerc ise authori ty or to teach or t ra intheir children.Taking the life of one reprobate

often saved the lives of many decentpeople. People today take sin-crime-lightly, but God wants us to FEAR todo wrong!Remember that " the fear of the Lordis the beginning of wisdom" (Ps. I l l :

10). We must first learn to reverenceand fear our Crearor and His Laws.Then, when we come to know God asour Father, love will cast our that k indof fear which would separate us fromGod.God gave Israel these penalties to

out some of God's civil laws. But Chris tshowed that they perverted these lawseven while they claimed to follow Moses(Mark 7:5-13). They replaced God'sspiritual and civi l laws with the "tradi-

The punishment for false witnesseswas made so severe as to effectivelydiscourage that practice.Israelites did not pay taxes to keepconvicts alive in association with o ther

hardened criminals. How much our nation could learn from the wisdom andjustice set forth in these laws! America 'scomplicated, bungling system of law enforcement seems rather pitiful when wecompare its actual effectiveness to thatof Israel. Unlesswe have tha t love which only 'the HolySpirit can give, we sin, and the wagesof sin is dea th- (Romans 6: 23) .But what is sin? "Sin is the transgress ion of the law" (1 John 3:4) . Authority of Civil GovernmentGod is permitting the worldly governments to rule this world now to keeporder so we can live in peace. We are tobe subject to the civil rulers, and torealize that they hold their authority

from God to carry out the enforcementof law and order (Rom. 13: 1-8).No nation is carrying out the righr-eous judgment s of God, but it is Hiswill tha t they admin is te r civil government to maintain law and order . Christians are to pray that they will so rulethat we may lead quiet and peaceablelives (l Tim. 2:1-2).The Bible teaches that God has turnedover the task of civil government tothe unconverted people of this worlduntil they learn that human governmentcan't bring peace and happiness-untilChri st re tu rns to rule with us over allnations with a rod of iron. But are the 'civil authori ti es sinn ingwhen they condemn a criminal to death?The Bible answer is th at these menare responsible to God for the way theyuse their office. The apostle Paul saidof civil authori ties , ". . , he bearerh notthe sword in vain: for he is the ministerof God to execute wrath upon him thatdoeth evil" (Rom. 13: 4) .Being human, civil officers sometimesexecute a man who is no t guilty. But itis God's responsibi li ty to judge the irmisconduct. Even if they have misused

their office, they may be forgiven if theyrepent when God opens the ir minds toHis truth.But they will be held accountable ifthey willfully abus,e the authority Godpermits them to wield. DO YOU believe God's word?Many of you have been trying to hideyour eyes from God's law. You spendmuch time and effort in a vain attemptto excuse or justify hreaking one of thecommandments (Mat. 5: 17-20).Remember, (Mat. 5: 17-20) that eventhe least commandment is still verymuch in force!Have you been "postponing" obedience to God? Why?Do you think tha t reason will standup in the judgment?God's word says that your reward forsin is DEATH (Rom. 6:23). Yes, in thiscase the Bible teaches CAPITAL PUNISHMENT. Remember that this time God

himself will carry out that punishmentif you don't repent!I f you haven 't done so already, you'dbett er take Peter's advice to "Repent,and be baptized everyone of you in thename of Jesus Chri st for the remissionof sins, and ye shall receive the gift ofthe Holy Spirit" (Acts 2: 38).You will have to REPENT of breaking

God's law. You will need to be baptized as an outward symbol of your willingness to bury your old, di sobedientself. Then God will give you the HolySpirit, through which you will receivethe love to keep His law.God loves you. He wants to give you

eternal life!But, in His wisdom, God has decreedthat you must first learn to live the right,the sensible, and the happy kind of life.God's eternal, spiritual law-the TenCommandments-is the basis of thatsensible way of life.

man has twisted the truth of the EternalGod into something it was never meantto be and thus caused his own suffering.

These Religions Are Not God'sReligions of this earth change theirdoct rines and form to sui t the societiesthey serve. Christianity, Hinduism, Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism, Islamismand the other largely followed religionsof the world have all changed a greatdeal from their first conception by theirfounders. But, the greatest changes have

been made in Chris tianity. The difference between these other rel igions andChristianity is t hat the others were allmanufactured by men while Christianityhas become a perver ted, degenerated,paganized counterfeit of the originaltruth of God our Creator.

True Christianity as taught in theBible and inspired by God was revealedby the Creator of the earrh-our Creator-and is a way of life here on theearth at the present time to prepare onefor a life to come-living under Christwhen he comes to take over the governments of the ear th.

Today many eminent scientists arecompletely clisgusted with religion. Theysay that it imposes a code of living onmen tha t no man can hope to live up to,therefore encouraging hypocrisy. Theysay that it is a belief in superstition,fables and fairy tales which their sciencediscredi ts and proves impossible. Butonly their speculations oppose the Bible.Actually the things these men of sciencediscover-when science is held pure andtrue and is not speculative-prove theexistence of God and prove the greatnessand glory of the laws he set in motion.

This They Have OverlookedThere is one thing that our scientistsand economists who scoff at religionhave overlooked. Man MUST HAVE SOME

THING OR SOME ONE TO WORSHIP.Adam worshiped God, then the devil,but he worshiped some being of a h ighe rorder than himself.The scientists who believe in evolut ion of mankind tell us that the remainswhich they find of what they call prehistoric men are accompanied by the remains of items used in the worship ofsome kind or kinds of god or gods. Ifthere is no such thing as a god- i f man

has no need of oue and there never wasa god who created the earth in the firstplace then JUSt where did the idea of agod start? Why have men even fromear liest history worshiped gods? Thetruth is the Creator revealed Himse lf tosuch men as Adam, Noah, Shem. Menonce had knowledge of God (Rom.1:21), but, rejecting His rule, degenerated into false conceptions and worshipof imaginary gods.Again, the fact is tha t man MUST worsh ip some being or some thing! It is asmuch a part of his nature as his eyes andears are a part of his physical makeup.

Within the past few generat ions theworld has seen the rise of these scientistsand economists who believe that religionis the downfall of man, holds him backand keeps him from social progress.They see, for example, the unwillingnessof the Hindus to kill the monkeys whichravage their crops yearly while thousandsare dying of starvation. The religiousbelief is that they would blacken thesoul of an ancesror if they killed thesacred cows which would furnish meatfor the mil lions who die of s tarvat ionevery few years in oriental countries.Ignorant of the True God

On a crisp, bright morning not longago, the students of Ambassador College climbed into a chartered bus whichwas to take the group on a "surprise"tour.Until the group was well on its way,almost no one but Professor Walker,who planned the excursion, knew thedestination of the day. Each student wasdelighted to discover that portions of thetour would be spent viewing educational

spots in Los Angeles and tha t fabulouscity, Hollywood.A most interesting place was the firststop! By a specially tr ained guide, thestudents were taken on a tour throughthe new, u ltr amodern CBS Televis ionCity. Indeed If one didn't have someoneto escort h im th rough this immensebuilding (400,000 square feet of floorspace), he would quickly be lost in thelabyrinth of rooms, halls, and corridors.In one of the stage control rooms, itwas a surpr is ing thing to see nine television machines which, when they areused for special observance purposes intone color, clearness, and the like, areused all at one time! To give you anidea of rhe expense that goes into atelevision show, it might be interestingto note t hat a half-hour show of minorimportance costs no less than $37,000to produce.After spending a most delightful hourin Television City, the group scrollednext door to the origina l Farmers Market. There the students ate lunch andlooked through shops or "stalls" whichcontained hundreds of imported anddomestic items - fruits, vegetables,cheeses, glassware, clocks, clothing, birdsto enumerate only a few! Several Students were fascinated with a beautifulparrot which at times seemed to blurtout qui te an interesting conversation.

After this, one group of s tudent svisited the City Hall of Los Angeles,while another toured the Los AngelesTimes Bui ld ing . From the twenty-f ifthfloor of the City Hall , the tallest building in Los Angeles, we could view thegreat panorama of cities and mountains,It is certainly a wonder to see from theair rhe ribbon-like highway and railwaysystems interlocking rhe commercial andindustrial areas,

In the Los Angeles Times Building,we saw hundreds of volumes of pastarticles and pic tures for references andthe machines that produced them. TheUni ted Press Teletype machine was aneyecarcher. One could see the keys ofthe typewriter jump up and down withapparently no one in the room directingthose keys. The machine was automatically controlled from New York . But alleven more amazing, s ta rt li ng s igh t appeared when the group came to the endof a long stairway to find a large pressroom filled with monstrous machinerywhich roared and boomed so loudly thatour ancestors of a hundred years agowould probably have jumped out of theirshoes with fright! About twenty-six tonsof newsprint paper is used daily in themachines for about 450 ,000 interestedpeople who buy or subscribe to thepaper. It is a s tr iking fact that only sixper cent of the income in the newspaperbusiness comes from the consumer, andthe remaining nine ty- four per cent ofthe revenue comes from advertisementsin the newspaper. Few Americans realize the important contribution rhat advertising has made to our living standard.On Wilshire Boulevard--the nextstopping place, we dined at a cafeteriawhere one could have all the food hewanted to eat for only a little over adollar. Surprisingly enough, though, noone went back to the line for more thana second helping!To help the diges tion of the meal, wewere taken to see firs t-hand the production of a comedy radio show. And toend the evening perfectly, the groupwent to see a dei ightfu l televis ion production. Until we had seen these twoproductions, many of us hardly realizedthe amount of labor and equipment necessary for every broadcast and telecast.

A number of the men students at Ambassador Col lege have been busy forabout the last month working to convert what was once a bare piece ofground into an ath le tic field. Althoughnot as large as mos t big college or university athletic fields, it will provide

ample room for the track and fieldevents, plus two large tennis courts. Oneof the tennis courts will be ready for usein a short time.There will be a one-e ighth mile trackcircling the field. The running surfacewill be comparable to tracks " f manymajor universities. There will be enoughroom to permit four runne rs abreastat one time.The tennis courts have been builtinside the circle of the track. The courtswill not face due north and south butwill angle to the east just enough top reven t the sun shining in e ithe r play

er's eyes dur ing the afternoon. Becausethe weather condi tion was almost perfect when the courts were poured, theywill be of the finest professional qualityplus having ext ra width. Both are official championsnip size courts.The pole vault and broad jump willbe built beside one another and will belocated to the east of the tenni s courts.The runways for the pits begin at thenorth end of the field parallel to theeast straightaway of the track. Theymake a slight tu rn wi th the track andthen become straightaways to the pits.

This provides sufficient track space forthe pole vault and broad jump events.The h igh jump and Shot-put will be 10-cared on the north part of the field.Bleachers are going to be constructedon the west side of the field which willprovide a perfect view of the maintenni s cour t besides allowing the trackevents to st art and finish in f ron t of thespectators.The ground not being used for athletic act iv ity will be covered by a beautiful lawn. There will also be a hedgearound the ent ire a thlet ic field.There are several reasons why anathletic field of this type is more suitable

than one for football and baseball, Thepresent Ambassador campus in Pasadena will never be large enough to compete with large universities in thesesports. I f the student body were allowedto become as numerous on this campusas is the case in many colleges, we wouldlose the effecr of personal contact whichis so essential in developing well-rounded character . the days that He ordained?WHOSE Sabbaths Does God Hate?Hundreds of pamphlets have been

written in an attempt to expla in tha tGod abolished His sabba th and feastsin ancient Israel. Yet many of these sametracts attempt to prove tha t God cruellypunished Israel for breaking these days.Stop ro th ink! Here is an obviouscontradiction. Both ideas can't be r ight .Why would God punish a nation forrefusing to observe days that supposedlyhad already ceased to exist? That justdoesn't make sense, does it?It's time we examined the historicalevidence of the Bible instead of assuming fables. Did God hate the days Heordained or did He punish Israel forbreaking them?Several chapters are devoted by theprophet Ezekiel to a condemnation ofIsrael for breaking the sabbazbs God hadgiven. This is historical proof that thosedays were then in existence and thatGod greatly disapproved their transgression. Take special note of Ezekiel 20:12-26 and 22:26. The punishment inflicted upon the House of Israel wasfor desecrating the sabbaths with idolatrous practices sanctioned by their ownhuman laws ihar were not good.What was t he ext reme evil of thissin? rejec ting the only si gn between themand God whereby they might know thatHe was indeed the Lord of all. With the

Th e Eternalsaid: "I hate, I despise your feast days,and ... yOl l f solemn assemblies." Notice it. "Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul harerh : for theyare a trouble unto me." (Amos 5: 21;8:10; Isaiah 1:10-15; Hosea 2:11).These were not divine institutions,

but man-appointed days observed inIsrael. These days God despised. Ancient Israel did no t continue to observethe holy days of God. They refused Hisjudgments and statutes (Ezekiel 20:18). They copied the heathen idolatrousfeasts of surrounding nations. Historyproves this fact!The chronic ler of ancienr Israel prese rved a record of just such a change in

the laws of God, when the House ofIsrael separated from Judah. "And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighthmonth, on the fifteenth day of themonth, like unto the feast that is inJud ah, and he offered upon the altar.. . sacrificing unto the calves that hehad made . . . the f if teenth day of theeighth month, even in the month whichhe had devised of his own heart . . ."'( I Kings 12: 32, 33).This was the initial step by which the

House of Israel departed from God'slaws. To keep his peopl e f rom returning to Judah where the sabbaths andfestivals of God were still observed, theking of t he House of Israel substitutedfeasts of his own devising-in place ofkeeping holy the days God made holy.

Thereafter Israel altered the newmoons, and changed the sabbaths intoi do lat ruus days for sun-worship. Onespecial feature should be noticed. Israelpartially retained a perverted form ofthe original days. The heathen nationsdid not keep thei r festivals as completerest days, but Israel, t ak ing ove r thefeasts of the heathen Baal-s-sun-ioorship-tlJrned them into idolatrous restdays acco rding to the statutes of thekings of Israel (2 Kings 17: 8) .When the House of Israel is nextfound in hisLUry, as the nations of North

western Europe, they are keeping theday of the sun! So the Ever-Living Godnever hated nor abolished His feasts.Bur He did hate the different dayswhich Israel Invented'

Did Judah Remain Faithful?The House of Israel changed the days

God instituted. The house of Judah saysthe Lord also "changed my judgmentsinto wickedness and my sta tures morethan the countries that are round abouther : for they have refused my judgmentsand my statutes, they have not walkedin them" (Ezekie l '): 6 ) .Now notice the first chapter of Isaiah.

It is addressed in particular to Judah.In thi s chapter it is especially mentionedthat th e Jews instituted the ir own appointed feasts and probably added another day to the new moon period."Your new moons and your appointedfeasts my soul hateth," said the word ofthe Lord (Isaiah 14: 1). THIS WAS THEBEGINNING OF WHAT IS CUSTOMARILY CALLED "JEWISH FEASTS." Beinginstituted by the Jews they were naturally "Jewish."But nothing is said about th e Jews'instituting their own Sabbath. It is notsurprising, then, that th e letas have preserved the right Sabbath of God to ourgeneration. Page 14their own appointed feasts and newmoons, but also retained the Biblicalones-"the new moons and sabbaths,the call ing of assemblies." These theyturned into abominations and profanedby idolat ry and labor. No wonder Godabhorred THE MANNER in which theJews treated His holy time (Isa. 1: 13).Whereas Israel changed every singleday, Judah , under the guidance of a fewkings who kept the correct festivals (2Chronicles 30 and 35), was religiouslydivided. Some Jews remained true tothe annual festivals, others kept them invain because their hearts were not right,whi le yet other Jews invented their ownannual occasions. The Jews neverchanged the sabbath, although they deliberately profaned it by work (Jeremiah 17:21-27).For that sin, especially, they weredriven out of Judea and deprived of oneof the blessings of God-the opportunity of keeping His days. They became theproperty of their enemies and "theLord . . . caused the solemn feasts andsabbaths to be forgotten in Zion" (Lamentations 2:6). Jeremiah does not joyover the abol ition of the festivals, butlaments over their being forgotten.In the Days of Ezra and NehemiahEven after having to suffer the privations of war for rejecting the ways ofGod, the Jews did not fully learn theirlesson. Those who returned to Jerusalemmade a covenant not to buy on the Sabbath or holy days (Nehemiah 10:31).Yet they continued profaning these hal

lowed days. Here is what Nehemiahwrites in his historical account:"In those days saw I in Judah sometreading wine presses on the sabbath,and bringing in sheaves, and ladingasses: as also wine, grapes, and figs, andall manner of burdens, which theybrought into Jerusalem on the sabbathday . . . Then I contended with thenobles of Judah, and said unto them,What evil thing is this that ye do, andprofane the sabbath day? Did not yourfathers thus, and did not our God bringall this evil upon us, and upon this city?Yet ye bring more wrath upon Israelby profaning the sabbath" (Neh. 13: 1518) .This stern rebuke of Nehemiah had aserious reaction on the carnal mindedJews after the time of Nehemiah. Instead of turning to keep the sabbath inthe spirit as God intended, the Jewssoon began to formulate scores of rulesof their own for its observance. Thiswas the tradition of the elders againstwhich Jesus spoke (Matthew 15:3) .

The beginning of this tradition isclothed in obscurity because of "thelong blank in the history of the Jewswhich follows the time of Nehemi-

The GOOD NEWSah ..." (Ency. Bib., p. 2425). Whenthe observance of the sabbath comes tolight somewhat before the time ofChrist, it was a radically different observance than that of which Nehemiah spokein the fifth century B.c.

Traditions in Jesus ' DayFrom the gospel accounts, and other

historical evidences, the Jews held thefollowing traditions, to enumerate buta few: no one could carry water to athirsty animal-that would be a burden- bu t he could lead the animal to drink';one could relieve the distress of the ill,but not heal; one could not break ordivide anything that was previouslyunited, as tha t was a form of grinding;neither could one eat grain from thefield as that was a species of threshing.But the Jews didn' t s top with this introduction of human traditions. Afterthe death of Nehemiah, they began toalter the days when the annual festivalswere to be held. By the time of Jesusthe sects of Juda ism were in great confusion over the passover and pentecost.

The apostle John shows that thePharisees were holding the Jewish passover at a later time than did Christ(John 18:28). The J.ews in Judaea nolonger observed the Biblical passoverat the beginning of the fourteenth ofNisan , as did Jesus and the Galilaeaus.They held their sacrifice toward the endof the fourteenth and ate it on the nightof the fifteenth which was really thefirst high day of the feast of unleavenedbread.To this day, the Jews fail to distinguish between the night of the passover (Exodus 12: 22) and the nightafter the passover (Numbers 33: 3; Exodus 12:42) when the Israelites leftEgypt. The Jews do not keep the realpassover.The Jews were also divided over theexact date for the ce lebration of pentecost-the feast of firstfruits (Jewish Encyclopedia, article, "Pentecost") . TheJews' feast of firstfruits or pentecostwas celebrated by the Pharisees on aspecified day of the month. The Sadducees main ta ined that pentecost wason a particula r day of the week, since ithad to be counted (Lev. 23: 15). Thisperversion of God's festivals deservedthe name given by the gospel writers:"Jewish feasts" (John 6:4; 5:1).How did Jesus regard these regulations? Did the teaching of Jesus indicate that he abolished these man-maderegulations and freer! the sahhath fromthe bondage of tradit ion? Or did heabolish the sabbath and the festivals?These questions are of major imporranee. III the next issue will appear thereal teaching of Jesus-something verydifferent from church doctrines today.

ARE PHYSICAL LAWS WORKING IN OURBODIES, REGULATING OUR HEALTH.Now this MEAT question has to do withthese laws!I have known men who make a hobbyof bitterly accusing others of SIN foreating pork, oysters, and clams.Let us get this straight and clear!We usually speak of SIN in its spiri tual aspect. That is the aspect in whichit usually is considered in the NewTestament. The Bible definit ion of it isthis: "Sin is the transgression of thelaw."The penalty for violation of that spiritual law is DEATH-but not the first,or physical death, but the second, orspiritual, and ETERNAL death in the"lake of fire" (Rev. 20: 14) .Now the eating of wrong food is nota transgression of this spiritual law, andis not a sin in this sense. To violate thephysical laws of health brings the penaltyof disease, disability, pain, sickness, andthe first death. It is not necessarily spiritual sin.

That is what Jesus made plain, as recorded in Mark 7: 14-23. Here Jesus wasspeaking of spiritual defilement, notphysical health. Not t hat which entersinto a man's mouth, but the evil thatcomes OUT OF HIS HEART, defilesthe man SPIRITUALLY. What defilesthe MAN-and he is speaking of defiling the MAN, not injur ing the bodyis transgression of the Ten Commandments-evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness,blasphemy (verses 21-22), etc. Thesethings have to do with the SPIRITUALlaw, and not with the physical laws ofhealth. Specifically he was referring to apossible particle of dirt which might geton food from dirty and unwashed hands-H e was nor here speaking specificallyof clean or unclean meats at all. But Hewas speaking of SPIRITUAL defilement,not physical health.

BEFORE THE FLOOD.Notice, before the Flood, Noah tookinto the ark of the CLEAN animals, tobe eaten for food, by SEVENS; but ofthe unclean, of which he was not toeat during the Flood, by TWo's--onlyenough to preserve their lives. The inference is inescapable that the additionalclean animals were taken aboard to beeaten for food while Noah and his family were in the ark.The ins truction in the II th chapterof Leviticus, then, was not some ritualistic regulation for the Mosaic period only.

The same is truewith oysters, lobsters, dogs, snakes, rats,and skunks.It's all a matter of what we have become accustomed to dOing. It seemsstrange and horrifying to us to hear thatsome Chinese eat mice as a delicacy. Butthe Chinese are horrified to hear that weeat nasty, slimy, filthy oysters! But somehuman grown-ups, like little babies, willeat anything they can get their hands onand stuff into their mouths.At so-called "qual ity" grocery storesin large towns and cities, specializing inrare delicacies, you can purchase "delicious" canned rattlesnake-if you carefor it.So far as I am concerned, you mayhave my portion if you wish to try it.I do nor care to eat it for the same reason I do nor eat slugs, skunks, cats, oreels-for the same reason I do not eatpoison ivy or weeds. Yes, and for thesame reason I do not put fuel oil in thegas tank of my car!The day will come when the learned(so-called) doctors WIll at last learn that

Better let a smallportion of unfit meat go into yourstomach this once than arouse the prejudice and indignation of another againstyour religion and turn him forever fromthe truth.Two othe r point s to be briefly mentioned. God condemns aim the eatingof animal fat, or blood (Lev. 3:17;7:23; etc.) . But te r, olive oil, and somevegetable oils and shortenings are allright, but animal fat should be Cllt offbefore eating meat. Hamburger is notgood because mixed with much fat. Lardshould never be used. These things will

wreck any stomach in time.I t may 110l be spiritual sin to eatunclean meats. Yet, if one del iberatelydoes it out of lust of appetite, that breaksthe tenth command and becomes sin.But in all events wrong food injures

Sincere Plans of Men BringOnly Unhappiness

Both of these plans have wroughtnothing but unhappiness on this earth.They did not allow for the avariciousnatures in human beings. As long asman rules mankind there shall be suffering, war and misery and poverty.Religion as practiced in this world today-ail the religions, including Christianity, ARE merely superstitions, fables,myths. Great thinkers see these ir regularities and thus throw God 's word intothe rnhbish heap of discredit. I f theywere to study the Bible as dil igently asthey do the science which they claim discredits religion, they would know wherethe errors ale and perhaps see that God'st rue teachings are the only way of bringing peace to this worid.Instead they have devised societies ontheir scient ific principles, leaving outGod and His laws.

What We Learned in EuropeWhile Mr. Hoeh and I were in Europelasr summer , we were asked many timesto describe America to people of manycountries who were interested in ourway of life, our government and our society. We found that people in manycountries of Europe have a better knowledge of U.S. history than many people

right here at home.They have misconceptions about ourstandard of living. These they haveacquired from the American movies thatare shown in Europe, and the fact thattoo many Americans traveling in Europedon 't wan t to be bothered to take thetime to tell anyone about their country.Europeans read in their newspapersabout our government scandals, the mismanagement , the g ra ft and cor rupt ionin our government.Then we turn around and try to tellthem that our democracy is the bestform of government on earth. This isan unbelievable contradiction to most ofthem. They think of America in termsof Chicago gangsters , New York racketeers and Hollywood actors and actresses. They know virtually nothi ng

Our moral codes are, in principle,highly idealistic and righteous. But inpractice they are often morbid.

We tell ourselves that we live in aChristian society that emphasizes brotherly love and respect for our fellow manand the worship of God.
