women will stand toe to toewith any person that threatensthe freedom of their country. The fear of death does not

phase these soldiers as muchas their deep love for whatthey believe is right does. Lovefor their homelands, love fortheir families, and love for thepeople they are protecting, and love for their fellow service-men. With every minute theyspend in combat they knowthat, when they attempt to re-turn fire in mid-combat, deathcould be their only reward. They know that at any momentan enemy bullet could fatallystrike them leaving their spousewidowed, and their childrenbroken. Yet they stand unitedand fight.

The chance to be a part ofthis great country is such asprivilege, yet only a select fewreally accept that fact. Most ofus just go on day by day takingadvantage of the fact thatmany people died just so wecan live our lives in a free na-tion. On this special day, in re-membrance of these braveHeroes, I would like to offer mythanks and gratitude to you. This nation would not be nearas great as it is now if you, thebrave young men and womenthat some of us call grand-mother or grandfather, motheror father had not risked yourlives for it. Veterans are veryspecial people, they are an un-ordinary group of brave individ-uals who looked withinthemselves and found outwhat the true meaning of free-dom meant to them. They in-termingle among us just tryingto live on with their life, and for-get about the past. Some stillto this day wear our countriescolors in pride, refusing to goanywhere without their uni-form. My grandfather is one of

the people that just wishes tocontinue on with daily life, butfor those who know what heendured, we are truly im-pressed, and forever in debt. Some members of my familyknow that he does not like tobring up what happened in thewar, because it’s a sore spot forhim. I understand this com-pletely, but each time I see him,I feel like I’m in the presence ofgreatness. He fought on thefront lines in World War II, andstayed longer than his termcalled, just so he could finishwhat in his mind, he was sent

there to do. This is true bravery, and it is something that only aselect kind of people have, and these people are our na-tions Veterans. The guys thatwent from using a pickaxedeep under the surface of theearths’ crust in a mine one dayto firing a weapon for causeunknown the next.Veterans are a special peo-

ple, they are freedom fighters, and they will continue to fightuntil unpeaceful threats are di-minished throughout. Thankyou, you’re all Heroes in mybook.”

A Program Offered by Achieving Dreams for

Disabilities

SEEKING:The Special Horses for Special People program

is seeking well-trained horses. For more information please contact Susan Eberline 507-461-5652

Adults and kids from the 4-Hprogram were a big help withstarting our own horse ridingsessions in Waseca at theWaseca County Fairgrounds.Besides the ADD board, we arefortunate to have volunteers towork the program, bring horsesand wagons. Without the

Waseca & Steele County Sher-iff's Posse's and other horseowner's, we wouldn't be ableto provide this experience.Right now we have 125 riderssigned up each year and weare always looking for kind, gentle horses to give rides. There is a lot of chaos at times,so it's very important that wehave the right "horses". Thereare wagon rides given to thosewho are unsure or scared toget on a horse. Again, this pro-gram is put on by AchievingDreams for Disabilities (ADD)and only for those with disabili-

ties. It is a free program. Anyquestions can be directed toKari Haslip 507-835-2058 or Sta-cie Brinkman 507-835-3444. Do-nations are always acceptedand appreciated.”

TEAMAcademy...PreparingStudents forHigh School

andTheir Future

By Jill Courtney,Director

Our students are our future! At TEAM Academy we wantour students to be prepared forhigh school, college, and join-ing the workforce someday. Here are a few of the things weare doing now so they areready for their future! Each spring, our 6th graders

visit the Waseca High School. They meet some of the teach-ers they will have next year and

get a tour of the building. Our6th grade students are alsoheld to the same homeworkstandards as 7th graders. Ifthey have missing assignments, they are not allowed to partic-ipate in extra activities atschool (band, choir, studentcouncil, etc.). We encourageall of our students to partici-

pate in community sports andother activities. This helps themto meet new friends outside ofTEAM Academy, learn to worktogether as a team, and useproblem solving skills.Spanish is taught to all stu-

dents at TEAM starting in kinder-garten.

Similar to other important scientific discoveries such as penicillin, the discovery that chickens can regenerate their own hearing occurred almost by accident. While studying how drugs that are known to cause hearing damage affect the tiny sensory cells in the ears, scientists needed to permanently

damage a chicken’s hair cells. In this study, research assistants administered a common antibiotic for 10 days, known to cause hearing loss, to laboratory chickens. On day 11 many of the hair cells were lost and a few days later, even more were lost. Surprisingly, when the scientists looked three weeks later, almost all of the hair cells had returned. Now, we know this ability is true of all vertebrate animals except one, mammals, including humans. NOT FAIR.

We’ve all been concernedabout our skin care at sometime or another. Julie Con-way is working to help peopleout. I asked her to tell usabout her business and here’swhat she had to say.“I was introduced to a skin

Eligible blood donors of allblood types are encouragedto give blood through theAmerican Red Cross this springto help ensure a sufficient sup-ply for hospital patients.Donated blood is perishable

andmust constantly be replen-ished to keep up with hospitalpatient need. Red blood cellsare the blood componentmost frequently transfused byhospitals and must be usedwithin 42 days of donation.Eligible donors can give red

blood cells through either aregular whole blood donationor a Power Red donation, where available. Power Reddonors give a concentrateddose of red blood cells duringa single donation, allowingthem to maximize their impact.During this type of donation, red blood cells are separatedfrom other blood components,

and the plasma and plateletsare safely and comfortably re-turned to the donor. While donors of all blood

types are encouraged to giveblood, type O, A negative andB negative donors are urged togive Power Reds if they meetthe additional eligibility criteria.Type O negative is the universalblood type and can be trans-fused to patients of any bloodtype in an emergency. Similarly, type O positive can be trans-fused to Rh-positive patients ofany blood type. Types A nega-tive and B negative can betransfused to Rh-positive ornegative patients. Power Reddonations help ensure a stablesupply of these critical bloodtypes.Make an appointment to do-

We all understand the dy-namic on a sports team wherethere are usually one or two su-perstars whose faces show upin endorsement deals. Then wehave the rest of the teamwhose names are harder to re-member, but who grind it outevery game. Now let’s play ourown game: what are the firstwords that come tomind if I say“essential nutrients?”I would venture to say protein

is the superstar that comes tomind first. It’s the “Michael Jor-dan” of nutrients and it seemswe can’t get enough of it. I dis-cuss protein in my book, Super-Life, The 5 Forces That Will MakeYou Healthy, Fit, and EternallyAwesome.” I would venture tosay protein is not the superstareveryone makes it out to be.Instead, we need to focus on

the whole “team” – the widearray of macro and micronutri-ents that our body absolutelyneeds to be healthy. Here is a cool story. In the

early 1900s scientists attemptedto create the first nutritional for-mulas for infants. They focusedon what is known today asmacronutrients (protein, fats, carbohydrates primarily), butthis was not working. The infantswere not developing well, sothe scientists looked further onlyto discover they were lackingother essential compounds. Sothey tried adding some syn-thetic vitamins, but the infantsstill were not thriving. It was notuntil later on that scientists dis-covered the body’s absoluteneed for micronutrients forhealth.Very simply, micronutrients are

essential nutrients our bodiesneed in less than 100 milligramsper day. These include mineralssuch as chromium, iron, and

zinc, just to name a few. Itseems like too small of anamount to care, but eventoday we are still understand-ing just how important they areto human health and diseaseprevention. Some highlights oftheir amazing functions arelisted below.• Chromium – Chromium is a

trace element that plays an im-portant role in ensuring properinsulin function. Improper insulinfunction leads to diabetes!• Iron – Without iron, oxygen

would not be shuttled through-out our body to oxygenate ourcells.• Zinc – Nervous, reproductive

and immune systems are highlydependent and influenced onzinc levels. So we know that it’s not just

the superstars we want in ourteam; we need a full team tobecome successful at health. The question is how do we en-sure we are getting enough mi-cronutrients and where do weget them from?• The first point is to get plenty

of diversity in your diet. Eachfood you eat contains differentlevels of nutrients. The more di-verse you eat, the more likelyyou will provide your body with

the wide range of macro andmicronutrients.• Focus on organic or wild-

crafted foods. Plants get theirminerals from the soil they growin, so the richer and more di-verse the soil is, the betterchance the plant has to up-take the minerals in the soil, which will then be absorbed byyour body.• Sea veggies are an un-

Gardening Tips for FlowersRemove forced bulbs from

storage. Use some for indoorenjoyment and move a few ofthe potted bulbs from cold stor-age directly outdoors toplanters, window boxes or inthe garden. This is a great wayto brighten up drab areas andcreate a surprise in the springlandscape.Prepare flower gardens for

planting. Check the soil mois-ture before digging in. Grab ahandful of soil and gentlysqueeze it into a ball. Lightly tap

the soil ball. If it breaks intosmaller pieces, it's ready to beworked. If it stays in a ball, thesoil is too wet to work. Wait afew days and try again.Once the soil is dry enough,

work 2 inches of aged manure, compost, or peat moss into thetop 6 to 12 inches of soil. The or-ganic matter will improvedrainage of heavy clay soilsand increase water-holding ca-pacity in sandy soils. Use the soiltest information as your guidefor adding fertilizer and othersoil amendments. Rake the gar-den smooth, sloping the soilaway from the building or cen-ter of island beds. Lightly sprin-kle with water or wait a week toallow the soil to settle.

Gardening Tips for EdiblesSpring is the time to get busy

in the garden. Northern gar-deners can plant asparagusroots and rhubarb plants assoon as the soil is workable andplants are available. Dig anddivide existing rhubarb plants,or plant rhubarb transplantswith the crown buds 2 inchesbelow the soil surface. Space

the plants 3 feet apart. Grow infull sun to light shade in well-drained soils. Wait one year tomake your first light harvest andtwo years for the longer largerspring harvest.Plant dormant bare root fruits,

vegetables and herbs in yourprepared garden as soon asthey arrive. Those plants thatstarted to grow in transit willneed a bit more care. Plantthese in a container of well-drained potting mix and growin a well-lit location indoors, in acold frame or other frost-free lo-cation. Transplant them out-doors into the garden once thedanger of frost has passed.Northern gardeners should re-

move winter mulches on straw-berries as the temperaturesbegin to hover near freezing orwhen the covered plants begintop growth. Rake the straw intothe aisles between plantings.Leave it there to serve as sum-mer mulch, reduce weeds andconserve moisture. Or add thestraw to the compost pile andlet it decompose for future usein the soil.

Trees, Shrubs and RosesAvoid pruning trees during

leaf expansion when the barkcan easily be damaged andduring wet weather when dis-ease can be readily spread. Ittakes several years to get over-grown trees back into shape.Start by removing damaged, crossing, opposite, or rubbingbranches. Leave healthybranches with wide crotch an-

gles (where branch joins trunk).Over time develop a strongframework of properly spacedmajor branches spiraling up thetrunk.Remove any screening, cloth

strapping, or winter protectionnow. Hardware cloth fencingcan stay in place. Make surethe material is not rubbing orgirdling the plant. Continuemonitoring for animal damageand apply repellents, scaretactics or fencing as needed. The growing and planting

season has begun. As the soilthaws and temperatures warm, the nurseries are busy digging, transporting, and selling treesand shrubs. You can start plant-

Tips for Indoor PlantsKeep your Easter lily looking

good through the holiday andbeyond. Place the plant in acool bright location and keepthe soil slightly moist. Placemar-bles in the bottom of foil wrap, baskets or decorative cover-ings that lack drainage holes. As you water thoroughly the ex-cess water will drain throughthe soil, out the bottom of thepot and collect in the bottomof the decorative container. The pot will rest above thewater on the marbles, eliminat-ing the risk of root rot. Comeback to seemy late April tips forsuggestions on growing your lilyfor years to come.Cat owners should consider

alternatives to the traditionallily. Ingestion of small amountsof the plant can be very toxicto cats. Consider a bouquet offlowers, a mum, or a pot offorced crocus or iris.Finish repotting plants that

have outgrown their contain-ers. Large plants that havereached the maximum pot sizeand have nowhere to go canbe top-dressed or root pruned.Topdressing, a short-term solu-tion, is done by carefully remov-ing the top 1 to 2 inches of soil.Replace that removed soil withfresh soil and water it thor-oughly.

Lawns and GroundcoversStart laying sod as soon as sod

is available for sale. Site prepa-ration is the same whetherseeding or sodding a lawn.Work several inches of compostinto the top 6 to 8 inches of soil.Rake smooth so the soil slopesaway from the house and is aninch below the adjacent walksand drive.Use the driveway, walk or

curb as your starting point. Laythe first row of sod next to thelongest of these straight edges.Butt the sod ends together andstagger seams as if you werelaying bricks. Use a knife to trimthe sod to fit.Rake out any dead areas in

the grass and be patient. Waitfor the surrounding grass to fill inthese areas. Consider reseed-ing larger bare spots and deadpatches. You can purchase alawn patch kit from your localgarden center or make yourown. Mix a handful of qualitygrass-seed mix into a bucket oftopsoil. Remove the deadgrass, roughen the soil surfaceand spread the seed-soil mix-ture over the area. Mulch re-seeded areas to conservemoisture and water oftenenough to keep the soil surfacemoist.

Say Hello to Lorraine KalbowThis month of April, 2017, brings us to introduce

another of our residents, Lorraine Kalbow.Lorraine Helen Gieseke was born in her

grandmother’s house in Janesville, MN March 29, 1926. Her parents were Fred and Lois Gieseke and she grew up in Janesville with her 2 sisters and 3 brothers on their family farm. Lorraine remembers many an hour spent milking cows.

Lorraine went to country school for her first 8 years, then to high school in Janesville. She graduated in 1943 and then took a job as a bookkeeper at the stockyards in Waseca. She worked there for 2 years until she married Orben Bauleke and started a family. They raised one boy together in Waseca until Orben died in 1965. Lorraine then went back to work at Montgomery Ward. A few years later she met Don Kalbow on a blind date and they got along so well that they married after just 6 months. “He was a wonderful man” she says. They continued to live in Lorraine’s home while they spent their leisure time dancing, playing cards in a card club, and were active at Sacred Heart Church. Lorraine also enjoyed gardening and sewing for people in town.Don and Lorraine moved to Colony Court a few years ago when Don got sick. Their doctor thought it might be a good fit. Don has since passed away and Lorraine has stayed on. She says, “Colony Court is a wonderful place – and there’s Bingo and other fun games and music to enjoy. Everyone is really good to you here.”

Thank you so much for choosing us, Lorraine. We love seeing your smiling face hearing that deep giggle every day!
