Woolgoolga High School 1 June 2012 Issue No.8
GOOD NEWS WEEK
Web address: www.woolgoolga-h.schools.nsw.edu.au E-mail: [email protected]
Students from Woolgoolga High School attended a regional drumming
workshop drawing students from Coffs Harbour and district high schools.
The drummers came together at Coffs Harbour High School to perform as
a mass ensemble. The rhythms of Africa resonated through the school
with many students left with sore hands at the end of the session.
The aim of the workshop was to celebrate the distinctive rhythms of Afri-
can culture that is becoming a part of life in many schools in our region.
We recognise positively the value of our students' diversity and this was
clearly demonstrated during this unique occasion.
Our students had lunch at the Jetty before learning more
about Australian indigenous culture from the Muttonbird Island
display. For some of our students it was the first time experi-
encing the Jetty area. The whole day was a great experience
for the students, both socially and culturally. They all had a
wonderful day and were exceptional representatives of our
school.

I would like to begin this newsletter with a
thank you to the 55 local employers and
business people who descended on
Woolgoolga High School last Wednesday
to inform our Year 10 students about the
possibilities of future employment. The
afternoon began with our senior hospitali-
ty students creating an excellent lunch for
over 230 students and adults. There was
time over lunch for our students to ask
questions and interact as adults with the
local business people. After lunch the
students, went into small groups to listen,
interact and gain an understanding of the
many career opportunities available to
them. Local community mentoring is a
very important part of this program. I vis-
ited many sessions, for example, Leigh-
tons sent 5 of their employees and their
session was excellent. The pay rates for
Leighton employees was indeed impres-
sive, quite similar to working in the mines
at remote locations. It was heartening as
an educator to hear employers stating in
many sessions the importance of a good
education to ensure a quality lifestyle
when they become adults. The im-
portance of English, Maths, Science and
in fact all subjects was stressed in many
sessions. Thank you to the Woolgoolga
Chamber of Commerce (Ray Willing and
Alistair Milroy in particular) and Youth
Directions (Sue Donnelly) for their signifi-
cant planning of the day. Also the spon-
sors, ETC and CHESS employment for
sponsoring lunch. The hospitality stu-
dents used this experience as an assess-
ment task. Thank you to Fiona Fluechter
and Alex Sutherland for organising the
Hospitality students. Well done! A special
thanks to Year Advisor Jenni Williams
and Careers Advisor Jeff Allen. Some
photos from the day on page 7.
Congratulations to Karen Dorahy from
Toormina High School. Karen has been
appointed as our new science teacher
and will begin at Woolgoolga High in term
4. She comes with a wealth of experi-
ence and will be a welcome addition to
our teaching staff.
Helen Young our Head Teacher Mathemat-
ics has identified the most talented Mathe-
matics students in Year 10. At present
there are approximately 18 students identi-
fied and these students will be accelerated
to complete their HSC in Mathematics in
2013 (whilst in Year 11). Mrs Young strong-
ly believes that all of the accelerated stu-
dents will achieve either band 5 or 6 re-
sults. What a great initiative!
Community Consultation Survey
Many of our senior students and the P&C
have asked that we add a navy blue tie to
our school uniform as an OPTIONAL EX-
TRA for senior students. This is due to the
impressive look of our students when they
don the school jackets and ties for our for-
mal events outside the school. I ask that
parents and community members use this
link to fill out a very short survey (2 ques-
tions only).
http://kwiksurveys.com?u=whstiesurvey
Over the past couple of years our school
numbers have fallen. The school now
needs to consolidate our Head Teacher
Positions. We are looking at restructuring
some Head Teacher positions. The first
step in this process will be to combine the
Home Science Department and the Indus-
trial Arts Department. The combined de-
partment will become a TAS faculty. If you
have any comments regarding this issue
please contact the school.
The Senior Student Information Night
will be held on Wednesday 20 June from
7.00pm to 8.15pm in the Woolgoolga High
School hall. This night will inform both stu-
dents and parents of the options available
in the senior school years. Pathway options
will be discussed with regard to subject
choices, expectations, senior student cul-
ture, Board of Studies requirements—just
to name a few of the topics. It is important
for both parents/caregivers and students
attend.

Senior Girls’ Netball 2012 As mentioned in the last newsletter, WHS was represented at the CHS senior netball round robin by some of our outstanding students. Many of these ladies are in Year 12 and have been involved in this team since Year 7. With every year, these students have always enthusiastically played to the best of their ability, displayed excellent sportsmanship and enjoyed playing with their friends. They have shown commitment, passion and enjoyment in their involvement in this team. These ladies have represented Woolgoolga High School in the most positive way. As a school, we would like to acknowledge and thank them for their involvement throughout their school years. These students should be proud of upholding the great reputation Woolgoolga High School has in the community.
To the Year 12 students : Elly McKenzie, Kate Mayes, Jesse Ward, Megan Wyatt, Erica Thompson, Bronte Seymour and Ashleigh McBrien - the team will miss your leadership, skill and personalities. We wish you all the best for your futures. To Keely Owen, Alison Schmidt and Jasmine Thorpe in Year 11 - We will look forward to your leadership next year. To all the junior girls who will be stepping up to this team in 2013 - We will look forward to you continuing to uphold our reputation as a strong, competitive, great team.
I would also like to thank the Thorpe family for helping organise umpires and venues over the years. Especially Sam Thorpe who umpired this year. Thanks to the parents who have assisted with transport, scoring and supporting this team over the years. Thanks to Mrs Rook for coaching the team for this competition. Without staff supporting and volunteering their time for these events, they would not happen!

Helping our Year 10 Students
Make an Informed Choice in the Senior School
At the Youth Careers Forum held last week, all of the Year 10 students were given a workbook for choosing HSC courses to be completed in class over the next four weeks leading
up to the Senior Subject Selection Night on Wednesday 20 June 2012.
Year 10 students have been asked to look back over the last two years and reflect on what strengths and weaknesses they have in their six core areas – English, Maths, Science, History, Geography and PDHPE – as well as their current Year 10 electives.
Please keep in mind the three golden rules of subject selection.
Choose what you are good at.
Choose what interests you.
Choose the subjects you really NEED to provide for further study at the
tertiary level (TAFE/university) or full time employment.
Teachers of Year 10 will be taking some time to discuss and complete the relevant sections for their specific subject areas in the workbook over the next four weeks. This process will greatly assist in assuring that the senior subjects our Year 10 students take are the ones that give them the best chance of success in the HSC.
The subject selection timeline is outlined below:
The process of choosing senior subjects can often be a confronting one with many students and parents not knowing where to start. We hope that this advice based on the student‘s track record of success over the last two years in each subject area will be an excellent starting point to help the students make an informed choice.

Red Cross thankful for community support
Woolgoolga Red Cross would like to thank the community for its generous support of Red Cross Calling this year. The
campaign for 2012 officially closed this week with over $10,000. Every little bit helps and Woolgoolga Red Cross Branch is
proud to have been part of the national campaign. Red Cross Australia greatly appreciates the support of its Red Cross
members and volunteers who generously donate their time and efforts, a true indication of the Power of Humanity.
Once again Woolgoolga and the Northern Beaches community have facilitated the work of Red Cross and shown much
empathy for those less fortunate than themselves. The campaign took off strongly with a $500 donation from Leighton
Fulton Hogan. It ended with Woolgoolga Lions Club taking the tally over the $10,000 mark. ― This is a remarkable
achievement and possibly the highest per capita collection in the State‖ local Coordinator Judith Jackson said. Volunteer
collectors came from Woolgoolga High School, John Paul College and the Christian Community School. There were many
other volunteers and businesses that helped out. Our thanks in particular go to Lions and Rotary who added weight to the
community effort (see full list of businesses below).
The community‘s generosity will help fund every day Red Cross programs such as a daily phone call service to isolated and
eldery Australians to check on their wellbeing and safety, assisting people in all facets of life including those that have
fallen upon hard times, food programs that provide a nutritious breakfast to kids who would otherwise go to school without a
proper start to the day, or disaster response programs that enable Red Cross to prepare and immediately respond to
natural disasters like the floods that we have recently seen in Queenland and Northern NSW. The work of Red Cross and
the power of humanity connect with people in times of need
Red Cross Australia is a member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, and is part of the largest
humanitarian network in the world, with millions of members and volunteers in 188 countries. In 2014 Red Cross Australia
will be celebrating 100 years of service to the Australian community.
Thank you to the followings businesses who chose to 'show the face' of Red Cross to the wider community and for
confirming the power of humanity; please show your appreciation by supporting them.
