For a wedding, I am looking for a party pack for a girl and a boy - Sharon

There is something special about having children at a wedding. And even more so when something is planned just for them. Giving each child a party pack is a brilliant idea! On a side note, if there are many kids attending you may also want have a special kiddies table and ask the venue to prepare a kid-friendly menu. As an added extra have a baby sitter on hand so the parents too can enjoy the evening.

For the party packs here are a few suggestions:For young kids under the age of 3, our Goodie Boxes are ideal. They are filled with age appropriate toys like play dough, a cookie cutter, small toy and pencil crayons to colour the pictures on the box.

For older kids, consider making up your own “goodie boxes”, fill our kraft gable boxes with confetti eggs, daft disguises, trivia game boxes, one of our felt craft kits and a lollipop or two. We also love the idea spotted over at Martha Stewart Weddings of providing each child with a disposable camera, pencil and a list of “kodak moments” for a photographic scavenger hunt!

GOOD LIFE

PHOTOGRAPHY - WE LOVE PICTURES

Casey & Richard fell in love on a Route 62 Christmas road trip jaunt and Richard asked her to be his girlfriend over Moema’s picnic bits in a Zoo Lake rowing boat two months later. He proposed with a ring in a plush toy shark’s mouth (his alter ego) at a picnic under autumn skies at Kievietskroon Estate. So it goes without saying that their wedding

would mirror this with a seaside shindig.

TYING THE KNOTThe ceremony site was a glade of trees decorated with metres and

metres of ribbon and paper daisies strung from the material-wrapped tree and guests were greeted with cocktails like Blue Crush, Polka

Dot Bikini and Thunderstorm. To the sounds of crashing waves and Jose Gonzale’s Heartbeats, the couple literally tied the knot. Their hands were tied together and they exchanged Irish cladder rings

before making their way through a cacophony of streamers and cheering to the beach for a group photo.

10 | www.ingoodcompany.co.za

Following the ceremony guests enjoyed yoghurt fruit lollies and had their pictures taken at a striped photo booth, while Shark &

Penguin (as Casey and Richard are affectionately known) braved the wind for their official pics with a bright bunch of balloons in tow.

PINSTRIPED PICNICThe catering company, the

dynamic duo at The Corner Cafe, spoke their language

and translated their wishes for a chilled beach lunch

into a bottled tapas picnic-basket starter followed by braaied fish and gourmet

burger alfresco banquet. The rain set in as the feast began and an intimate reception to the sounds of modern folk

songs and old swing favorites followed suit. The couple lit a wall of meringues on their Amy Atlas-inspired sweet table

before cutting their three-tiered pinstriped cake.

With the wedding a few days away, it is always a good idea to organise a bridal luncheon, not only to say thank you to your lovely ladies, but also to spend some real quality time together. And whilst

the last thing the bride may want to do is plan another party, be rest assured that our DIY spa day is easy and economical – so that

the bride too can sit back and relax!

www.ingoodcompany.co.za | 19

SPA DAY STATIONERY

As the bridal luncheon is only attended by a few, it will be easy to post or hand out an invitation. Be sure to invite your

retinue early on, so that they can be sure to reserve the date. After all, it is in

their honour!

20 | www.ingoodcompany.co.za

SALON SET UPThis party is designed to be held at home, the ideal location being your dining room table, or if weather permitting, a patio table and chairs. Initially the table will be “set” for the spa activities and then afterwards it can be quickly transformed into a dining area for a light

lazy lunch. However, all luncheon foods and drinks can be set up beforehand alongside on a sideboard, so as to minimise tasks to be performed during the lunch. Set the table with linen then for the first setting place a face cloth like one would a placemat. In addition,

place the goodies that each guest will need to perform their own manicure and facemask.

SAVVY SUCCULENTSFor long lasting flowers, and ones that can be prepared days in advance, fill ceramic pots with succulents. For an added touch of elegance push through a pin with pearl or diamante bead on top into the centre of each flower. These potted flowers also make great favours

for your guests.

SWEET SENTIMENTSWhilst you may reserve the bridesmaids’ gifts for the rehearsal dinner, a bridal luncheon may be the ideal time to thank your bridesmaids in an alternative gift giving way.

Put together a small photo album of photos of you and the bridesmaid. Or frame your favourite.Write a traditional long letter about how thankful you are for being your bridesmaid, as well as highlighting special memories that you share. And pop in a pick in the flower arrangements and give one to each girl.

THE PROPOSALRiaan designed a book cover with title “The true-life-love story of Louise and Riaan - an on-going fairy tale based on real events - past and present”. Inside the book he stuck photos of all the women in her life, with a little letter from each of them stating their approval. He organised that the book be placed on display at their favourite book shop and then told Louise that he’d like to go spend some time browsing there. She saw the book cover, and he suggested that she pick it up and look at it, and on the back cover it said “Will you marry me Louise?”

“The idea for the invitations was to convey the magic you

feel when reading a fairy tale. People are always amazed and inspired when we share our own story with them and so we came up with the theme of “Sharing your Story”. We wanted the invitation to be

made up of ‘goodies” so people would interact with them

and add little things in the invitation that were special

to people we knew: Riaan’s dad loves gardening so this was the

reason for Cosmos seeds that people could plant to start

their own story. The bookmark included the planting

instructions. My mother sews beautifully – so we die-cut the

butterfly wings and placed real material pieces underneath. We

used old book illustrations for visuals and Riaan created our silhouettes. The back of all the items had pieces of an old book “Tis Folly to be Wise” - guests actually had a lot of

fun because they got together and started pasting the story

on the back together.

SOMETHING…OLD: My grandfather’s old police cufflinks (he passed away in 2009) that I used as buttons in the groomsmen’s rosettes I made.

NEW: My wedding dress (lace coloured with coffee and cold dye)

BORROWED: Material from Riaan’s shirt that I covered my shoes with

BLUE: A badge I made for our very first date that said “EK KEN RIAAN”. I had saved and put on my wedding bouquet.

The picnic baskets included goodies like Smoked Snoek Terrine, Mini Mielie Loaf, Karoo Beef and Chicken Sosaties, Cape Cheeses served with Homemade Grape Preserve. Extras included a wooden cheeseboard, wooden cutlery pack with spoon, serviette, wet wipe, toothpick, seasoning and a scented disposal bag. The linen serviettes had the menu printed onto them, and for fun there was a cootie catcher and a personal letter to every guest thanking them for the role they play in the couple’s lives.

The story dolls made by Lovelab: “I am a “story doll” and I was invented and created especially for you. My story has not been written yet and that is why there is a pen tied to my body. You may decide who I am and what I look like ... and then you can write my story on my body. I hope we will become best friends! ♥ Tell mommy she can wash me in the machine - this is a special “laundry marker”.

GOOD LOOKS

PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANDREA CARLYLE

Leanne & Andrew were always destined to be together and with a relationship spanning

over 13 years, there was no better way to celebrate a new year together than with a new life as husband and wife. Not only did

their wedding take place in the heart of the bushveld in Waterskloof but under a rare

blue moon too.

50 | www.ingoodcompany.co.za

THE PROPOSALOn a golf course of all places; it was on the 14th hole of Roman road,

Celtic Manor in Wales. I was having a shocking round, I was on the green for about 5 and had already 2 putted - I was just about to pick

my ball and move on when I noticed out of the corner of my eye that there was something in the hole... It took a few minutes before I realised

what it was. Andrew had managed to place the ring box in the hole without me knowing. I just stood there for ages staring into the hole until Andrew finally picked up the box, opened it and asked me to marry him. It wad totally unexpected. I was in tears! Needless to say I couldn’t

continue playing golf!

GOOD LOOKS

Planning a wedding often does not only involve the wedding reception, but most likely other “dinner parties” like early on there is the engagement party or just before

the big day, the rehearsal dinner to consider. These occasions can be just as glamourous with minimal effort

as our Elegantly Entertaining range stands to show.

60 | www.ingoodcompany.co.za

DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER Well suited to a pre-wedding party is an all white colour scheme

with the addition of diamonds as the accent. This is especially a good choice as white lends itself to simplicity and an air of “low key” but

the addition of diamonds brings in just the right amount of glamour without being over bearing.

TABLE GEMSDivine faceted table gems to add shimmer and sparkle to your party. Scatter decoratively over your dinner table to create a glamorous look your guests will love. IN GOOD COMPANY SHOP Various shapes and sizes – see GET THE GOODIES for more details.

www.ingoodcompany.co.za | 61

WHITE WONDERThe advantage of such a theme is that the big ticket table items

are usually those that you already have at home or in the case of a restaurant or venue – they come standard and are of good quality: white linen tablecloth, napkins, ceramic ware and clear glassware. Therefore, with just a few additional pretty details you will have a

table that sparkles and shines.

Kim and Dale were recently married at Toadbury Hall, Muldersdrift and whislt it was a small intimate wedding, the occasion was bright, bold and beautiful!

HOW WE METDale and I went to the same high school and we were friends throughout school, and we started dating about a year out of high school. After 4 years of dating, we went away for the weekend to a game lodge and Dale had arranged a game drive for us the afternoon we arrived. He had organised for them to set up a picnic for us in a dry river bed and this is where Dale nervously proposed to me. That evening we then enjoyed a private dinner that the lodge had organised especially for us.

SULTRY SUMMER Our wedding day was different to the norm as we had a really small garden wedding shared with only our family and closest friends. Toadbury Hall was accommodating to our request and they allowed us to use their Gazebo and their beautiful gardens. As our wedding was mid summer and outdoors, we chose the bright colours of green and pink to go along with the colours of the summer season. We had one long table set out in the gardens beneath the trees next to the little lake.

WE NOW PRESENTI throughly enjoyed our small intimate wedding but the highlights of the day was when I walked through the gardens down the path towards my dad as he waited for me with my bouquet and tears in his eyes. My next highlight was walking down the aisle with my dad towards Dale and seeing his face light up as he saw me. I also loved as Dale and I walked to our song, towards the table full of our family and closest friends and they greeted us as husband and wife.

CAKE IN A BOXEach place setting had a silver base plate with a name card/menu folded into the napkin and each guest received a chocolate cupcake personally packaged in a transparent box with a ribbon and name card. Our wedding cake was a two-tiered white vanilla sponge cake decorated with pink and green polka dots.

Six Ways to Get a Spring Look

CreateFRESH FROM THE FARM

Bring the garden to the table centre, displaying fresh produce

bought on the day from local green grocers or your garden.

ReflectNATURAL LIGHT

Combine stoneware with the subtle shimmer of silver. Mercury glass votives or vintage flatware

will create a romantic atmosphere.

HuntUNIQUE CONTAINERS

Look around your home for vessels to complement your

table setting. Use tea tins and cups as vases or a breadbasket.

AddEDIBLE PLACE CARDS

Personalise each place setting with a little sweet treat like a dainty fairy cake or flower shaped ice biscuit, with a little nametag.

ArrangeBIG BLOOMS

A spring table is only complete with an oversized arrangement of “just picked” pastel hued flowers.

In this case, more is more.

LayerCHINA AND GLASS

Simple china and clear glass look elegant but feel casual. Choose plain and etched designs to add

interest without distracting.

HOW WE METSeppi is a photographer and I am a stylist so we met through work. We had actually worked on a few shoots together and always had such a laugh together that our relationship progressed. I come from Canada

originally and I went back there after a year of us dating to visit friends and family. Seppi came out at the end of my trip to meet my family. I think we both knew we were supposed to be together after that because

we both really missed each other! We arrived back in South Africa together and continued right where we left off!

THE PROPOSALNine months later, we took our

dogs to our local park for a walk one morning and Seppi was acting

rather strange, not sure which direction to go and making funny,

nervous comments and than he proposed! I, of course said yes!

WELL SUITEDMy family had already planned a holiday to SA for December so we started planning the wedding around their arrival. We both didn’t have too many ideas about how the wedding should be but we knew we wanted a real celebration and for sure was that Seppi was going to wear the 3 piece brown pinstripe suit that his father wore to his parents wedding in the 70’s so we sort of started planning the decor around that piece. Not disco, just vintage!

www.ingoodcompany.co.za | 101

BRIC-A-BRACClose friends of ours own and run Shepstone Gardens, so we knew where wanted to have the wedding, so location was taken care of right away. The location is so amazing that you don’t really need to decorate too much because it speaks for itself. But I just wanted to add a few touches with my sourcing of teacups and biscuit tins. My florist and good friend Cindy read my mind exactly when it came to the arrangements! Everything was quite simple but special with a mixture of colour and pattern. Even the cake was a surprise gift from one of my best friends was quirky and delicious!

A FEW GOOD MENI think the whole wedding was memorable but a couple of moments that stand out were, when my Dad was walking me down the aisle with all of my close friends and family around us and seeing Seppi at the end waiting for me with that look on his face, I will never forget it! I couldn’t wait to reach him and stand there together! Another super memorable moment was when Seppi, his Uncle and his Mom’s longtime Boyfriend all did a strip dance for the wedding and all ended up in their Canadian boxers! Was such a laugh and everyone had such a great time! We really do love pictures and this photographing duo as well! From the first time I “met” Maike over the Internet when she placed a wedding order with us to nowadays when I am sniffing back a few tears as they make their way to Cape Town to set up ship there. So, if you are getting married and looking for a photographer that can translate your personalities into the photos then pick them! You too will feel the love.

ABOUT MAIKE AND TRAVISWe met in University, while getting our degrees in photography. I was in my 1st year, he was in his final year. Travis already started shooting weddings in his 3rd year with his best mate and amazing wedding journalist Otto Schulze (he will be Travis’s best man as well as our photographer at our wedding).

After I finished my studies we both decided to take our love for portraiture and documentary and turn it into wedding documentary - and approach the whole thing as a team. We shot our first wedding together in February 2008 and have shot exactly 36 weddings since then.

We try to keep our approach to wedding photography simple and quirky - since we feel the whole thing is taken a bit too serious! We love building Love Booths for the reception and make brides kiss cows and grooms jump off hay bales. We are getting married in September and are planning to carry on shooting as many awesome weddings as possible as a married team!

Check out some of their work in this issue, as well as you are going to love their website:

HOW WE METHOW WE MET Well there are two versions, mine and his. His: We were at varsity and were waiting for our class to start, sitting outside on some broken chairs with a bunch of friends. Friedl was there and said: “I like your skirt”. I smiled and said “thanks”Mine: I went to a church that I use to go to as a kid when I recognised Friedl from class. He came up to me and said hi. I remember saying something about how the carpets in the church are older than I am. We smiled. But I guess when we really met, as in properly, is when we went to go watch a play together at varsity. We were in class waiting for the lecturer. Friedl came in and asked if someone had R5. I asked why and he said he wanted to go see a play called “Bodies” on campus. I said I had a R10 if he has change. Chuckle. I gave him the money and he ran out and I ran after. We sat outside the theatre waiting for the play to start and started talking. We were friends from then on.

108 | www.ingoodcompany.co.za

Our wedding day inspiration came from different places: our family, websites, movies and a love of all

things vintage. Our wedding invites were designed by Carla, Friedl’s sister and Friedl drew all the pictures for

the invites and the fans.

To see the tables set out was just the best and my

mom did such a great job on the flowers!

110 | www.ingoodcompany.co.za

It was difficult to not go overboard

with the decor. For the tables we found antique ornaments

for each guest as their place card

and also collected antique side plates.

It was really fun as we had to go to every antique sale we could and my bridesmaid was a

great help!

www.ingoodcompany.co.za | 111

Finding a venue I think was the most difficult. We wanted

something that was going to allow us to make the space

our own, we really wanted an old barn and to get married

outdoor. I really loved Clarens as it is an old town and very

mountainous, so we went there one day with my folks and

looked around. And once I saw the photos of a bush wedding at

Oranje Guest Farm I was sold on it.

112 | www.ingoodcompany.co.za

We had so many great ideas

and wanted to have a fun and

relaxing wedding. I often feel like

a wedding always just turns out

to be the same as all the other

weddings because people don’t

realise that there is a different

way of doing it. So we really tried

to add our own flavour. Yes it

took a lot of hard work and time.

But it was worth it.

Planning a wedding from England was all but easy, where to find a venue without a ‘Big Five’ theme, with an outdoor view to blow our guests away, and then the most important, a barn! I’ve always wanted to have the reception one. I saw pictures of a friend’s friend’s wedding at The Cowshed, Lydenburg and immediately emailed the lady - she had our dates. We planned, cried, fought, prayed, planned and planned some more!

GOOD LIFE

The day before our wedding, it poured with rain and we started praying (dat die spoeg spat!). We even got stuck in deep red farm mud on our way to the venue: ‘all part of the fun!’ we said. The next morning, the clouds moved away to form a beautiful circle all round the venue, making way for blue skies to wow the crowd. And the sunset... to top all other! It was amazing! Nobody could stop talking about how incredible the day turned out to be!

You are only a bride for one day, so make the most of it by „flaunting“ this title everywhere you go: from a printed t-shirt at the rehearsal dinner to the luggage tag on your honeymoon bags.

RESERVED FOR THE BRIDE At the rehearsal, tie a sign across the aisle, letting everyone know that this is specially for the bride’s grand entrance. GIFT TAGS The bridesmaids can use these as little gift tags for the bride’s bridal shower or wedding gifts. Or the bride can use the other versions for her gifts to be given at the bridesmaids luncheon or rehearsal dinner. T-SHIRT Print onto iron on transfer paper and then press onto t-shirts for the whole bridal retinue for the bridal shower, bridesmaids luncheon and the getting ready on the day of the wedding. Consider ironing this onto a sash for the bachelorette evening as well!

Download the free printable at www.ingoodcompany.co.za/goodtimes/downloads

Also available are bridesmaid, maid of honour, matron of honour, mother of the bride and mother of the groom.

126 | www.ingoodcompany.co.za

WRITE A LETTER The groom can pen one to his bride to be opened on the day of the wedding. Or use the other versions to ask your bridesmaids if they will be your bridesmaid or use for their thank you cards. DOOR SIGN Frame it and hang on the door, letting everyone know especially the groom that the bride is inside and not to enter whilst the bride is getting ready. LUGGAGE TAG Label the bride’s honeymoon bag, so that this is one suitcase not to get left behind, and hopefully hint at an upgrade! PLACE CARDS Designate the bride’s seat at all pre wedding occasions, use in conjunction

with the other versions for the bridal shower or bridesmaids luncheon. CHAIR BACK Look at making the bride’s chair that extra bit special with a pretty heart decoration or flower bouquet on her seat.

what’shotWith springtime around the corner, a whole new group of brides will become wives and love must be in the air as this is the season many ladies become engaged. Either way, the excitement is tangible, and the biggest question on everyone’s minds when it comes to weddings is what is the next big thing? I think nothing sums it up better than the traditional bridal adage of something old, new, borrowed and blue.

sweet sensation Whilst Dessert Buffets were all the rage last year, they are here to stay! And no one does it better than Amy Atlas. The great thing is that you already have this in your wedding budget, namely des-sert and a wedding cake. In fact, if you supply little boxes/bags on the table you can even literally eat into your favours budget!

engagement photo shoot You may have heard of them before but most likely it is just conjures up images of faded backgrounds and cheesy formal portraits, but engagement photo shoots are standard for most international brides, and if you take a look at today’s versions you can see why! These are hip and happening and a true reflection of the couple and their personalities. Another trend on the back of this; is having a “Trash the Dress” photo shoot. This is where you and your new hubby get all dolled up again but no longer have the time constraints of a cocktail hour to have some stunning photos together. Maybe it is some you missed on the wedding day, maybe you want to do something completely different, and for some it maybe the chance to really “take the plunge”!

TOP WEDDING TRENDS FOR 2010

dashing dane Too often the focus is only on the bride, and whilst one can appreciate it is “her” Big Day, there is a lot to be said for the modern 2010 groom. Most likely the bride will make just about ever decision when it comes to the wedding, but there a few things that usually are left up to the groom, one of which we like to think is his attire. It gives the opportunity for the groom to express his own personality. Now don’t fret bridezella’s! This trend is well-suited (pun intended) to your wedding day - today’s men are reverting back to good Old Hol-lywood Glam. Think smart black tuxedos, pristine white shirts and bowties - AKA James Bond! And if your groom wants a bit of colour we like the idea of coloured stripy socks or quirky cuf-flinks - sweet but discreet.

family style It has been fashionable in the past few years to do things differently when it comes to the menu and how it is served at weddings - but it seems brides are looking back to the good-old days where everybody sat around the table and enjoyed course after course and each others company. The dinner-focused reception is back - think either large round tables or long tables all in row.

Avoid buffets and the long queues that go with them, and have every course plated and served to the guests and waiters serving drinks (basically what you would experi-ence in a restaurant). And to keep things interesting consider have a course, possibly a starter that has to be passed around or a dessert that is made up from a selec-tion of dishes placed on the table.

fine favours Centuries ago, European aristocrats would send their wedding guests home with bonbonniere: a box filled with delicacies made of sugar. Whilst the trend in the past few years is to give non-edible favours, it seems brides are reverting back to sweet delicacies and more notably ones that are homemade, therefore making them more personal and with emphasis on memories rather than money. Combined with stunning packaging and a thoughtful note, you will have favours that are pure finery.

SOMETHING NEWhome sweet home With the economy taking a bit of a knock and with it wedding budgets, a great new trend has arisen: The “Backyard Wedding” as Americans like to call it. Maybe you are fortunate to already have a big enough home/garden. Or maybe your parents or other family or friends do. Nowadays, so many traditional venues ask quite hefty price tags and whilst this does include furni-ture and equipment, crockery, cutlery, glassware and table linen, there are many other factors and costs that are not included, especially to the extent where minimum num-bers are required. Hosting at a home will have the costs of hiring some of these items, but you may be fortunate in that a number of the items your host may already have. The advantages will be being able to create your own look that suits the home and your wedding style, and the thing we like the best is that you could purchase items that you love and use them at the wedding and then in your new home!

ceremony revamp If you want to avoid a cookie cut-ter wedding, revamp the ceremony. Whether you choose to host the ceremony in a church, ballroom or under a tree the idea is to make your guests feel right at home. Ideas include: Forgo the common aisle down the middle arrangement and seat your guests in a circle, that way everyone has a front row seat! Avoid assembly lines of chairs and create a lounging style using a mix of couches and chairs. Or what about benches or quilts on hay bales! Create your own “altar” by using a signature piece of furniture. Or make a real feature overhead with paper lanterns in mass. Serve drinks and play festive music dur-ing the ceremony, or even if the actual ceremony is quite traditional and formal, this is a great option just before and after the ceremony.

blogging bride Brides are not only using the inter-net in a big way to look for ideas and shop online, but also to communicate to their bridal party and wedding guests. This is especially the case when the guest list is spread all across the globe or a destination wedding is in the making. Couples now have the option for a reasonable fare to set up their own wedding website or better yet for free a wed-ding blog from wordpress or blogger.

grand getaway Maybe it is just me, but the idea of the bride & groom “Going Away“ seems to have fallen along the wayside years ago, but it is back and with a bang! It is about creating one last memorable moment to leave in your and your guests’ minds. Ideas include a fancy get-away car or a fireworks display. But grand does not need to mean costly, the same impact can be made with a tandem bicycle and your guests waving sparklers or releas-ing sky lanterns. In the midst of all your wedding day plan-ning, take a few minutes to plan the last few moments, or better yet assign this to your groom, so you too can enjoy one last big surprise!

love bowls One of the most memorable moments during your wedding ceremony will be the exchange of rings. It is the first time that you will actually touch each other as husband and wife, and for many, many years to come it will be a constant symbol to you and others of the one you love.

We think that is why there is such a thing as a ring pillow, a place for these beauties to be showcased and put on display for all to see. So what is there not to love, love about these ring bowls. Not only are they sublime in their simplicity, but they are practical too - it is not likely you will use your ring pillow again, but this bowl is perfect for placing on your dressing table should you wish to take your ring off or any other jewellery for that matter.

SOMETHING BORROWEDgreen is the new black! There is a conscious ef-fort of brides to do things in a way that take the environ-ment into consideration. And this does not mean one has to sacrifice style, in fact just the opposite can be true! So forgo the repurposing of tin cans (still a good recycling use for them though) and have the groomsmen “bor-row” some pretty paper garlands that you may have used to decorate the ceremony or venue site, and have these stuck behind your going away car. In fact be even more green and take a bike!

classic cake Wedding cakes in the past few years have been all chocolate or pretty colourful but it seems now it’s all about the classic white wedding cake. Order a simple, three-tiered cake with white icing or fondant form-ing a surreal backdrop for one of these “borrowed” item: Use an antique cake topper from your parents’ or grand-parents’ wedding. Decorate with the same fresh flowers that match your bouquet. Take a close look at your dress, and the leave the cake clear of any colourful add-ons, rather opt for white on white like your dress, think similar beading, lace or bows.

fashionable friends We know you have heard this before: the idea of “rewearable” bridesmaid dresses. But the horrors of websites like uglydress.com and the movie 27 dresses really makes one wonder why brides even bother to spin this little white lie. But we think 2010 bridesmaid dresses really are “borrowed” straight from the runways! The colours are hot, the styles are something you would wear for a night out on the town and the ac-cessories are identical to what you would buy in “normal” shops. The trend really is to have a look that is “co-hesive” rather than “cookie cutter”. It is about having the same colour or the same style or the same look or feature – but not all three; like you all went on a fabulous shopping spree!

vintage and retro touches Brides are “bor-rowing” trends from a completely different era and with much success: birdcage veils, tea length dresses 40’s style hairdos, gloves (either short or long), vintage glass hur-ricanes and coloured glass votives or old coca cola bottles and mason jars, old-fashioned phones and books, old typewriters for guest books, bikes for going away...

bouquet bliss What we love about trends is sometimes they are just so original it like a blast of clean fresh air! One automatically thinks flowers when you hear the word bouquet! But instead brides have not only “borrowed” other items for the bouquet, the other items are entirely the bouquet, think butterflies or brooches only. And better yet able to preserve forever!

SOMETHING BLUEput on your blue suede shoes One of the most important wedding decisions to make will be the colour palette. But even if you go for an all white or neutral colour palette it doesn’t mean you have to forgo colour completely. Have a little surprise up your sleeve, or in this case under your dress. Put your best foot forward and wear bright and we mean BRIGHT coloured shoes on your wedding day. And you know what we are going to say next: splash out on a designer pair as you can definitely wear them again and again!

We like the idea of having touches here and there: a monogramme on wedding stationery, shoes for the bride and/or bridesmaids or just the ribbon on favours.

out of the blue Your guests most likely know that you are already engaged, and some already know when you are getting married, so this trend is about sending a 3D Save the Date that obviously highlights the actual day that you are getting married but more so to have a fun un-expected element to it! Maybe it is a mini calendar, puzzle, luggage tag, bookmark and then our favourite has to be “Erica and Sam’s 164 Days until they tie the knot save the date card” –a list much like one would read a facebook status of what they would be doing everyday during the run up to the wedding.

turquoise: the colour of 2010 When it comes to colour, there is no question who is the know-it-all. And Pan-tone has announced not only all the colours that will be fashionable for Spring 2010 but have also declared that turquoise is the colour of the year! Fabulous news for brides as this colour has so many options. For it can look romantic and dreamy with white if done in textures and layers but then equally modern and sophisticated if sharp, clean lines are used.

singing the blues More and more couples are get-ting involved in their choice of music, gone are the days of having any odd string ensemble at the ceremony and booking a DJ for the reception, couples are looking at what music do they actually enjoy. So whether it is a jazz band or putting together a playlist on your iPod song for song it is about creating the atmosphere to suit the style of the wed-ding and personalities of the couple. The highlight of this being the first dance: couples are not only going for dancing lessons but are following in the foot steps (or rather dance steps) of the likes of Strictly Come Dancing and putting on exciting show pieces with outfits to match! Have not heard about the Little White Dress?

and a penny in your shoe Whilst you may follow all or none of these, one trend that never changes year after year, is to follow your heart! Have a “penny in your shoe” for your thoughts: what you and your husband-to-be love, what makes you happy and I promise you are guar-anteed to have a wedding that will be the “Wedding of the Year”.
