1st Sunday of Lent

Life can easily spin us out of control. While there are so

many wonderful opportunities before us, we can also get easily

distracted and exhausted. There is always something to do, respond

to, or check. The clutter of our lives can take us off course, and the

best remedy for getting back on track is the experience of the de-

sert. Here we can face our demons square on, resist them, and get

back on course. We desperately need the season of Lent. This sim-

ple time of year forces us into greater awareness and grounds us in

what is good and true.

What weighs you down and keeps you trapped? Maybe

you are trying to do too much and please too many people. It could

be that your fragile self-image is always pushing you to prove

yourself and find success. Anxiety and worry, ultimately due to a

lack of faith, can quickly tempt you with despair. It could be that

you are listening to too many voices and allowing all of the nega-

tivity that is present erode the genuine goodness in your heart and

in all of God’s creation. Or maybe you struggle too much with fear.

Perhaps so much so that you are far too preoccupied with your own

agenda and goals and left with little psychological or spiritual room

to consider and respond to the plight of your neighbor. Do anger,

bitterness, stubbornness, and hatred have homes in your heart?

How about greed, gluttony, pride, apathy, or lust?

For many, their passions and what can be found on the

internet are their downfall, and they are robbed of their inner life

and freedom. What is it, specifically, that tempts you away from a

childlike trust in God? Define this and use the next few weeks to

allow God to chart you a course away from them. Silence, being

alone, grace, honesty, struggle, tears, and dryness are all found in

the desert. You will also find God and your true self in this holy

place. Ready to go?

STAR OF BETHLEHEM HANDICRAFTS

Maysoon Khair will be at our church this weekend, February

29 and March 1, representing the School of Joy for slower learning

children and over 100 Christian families who make their livelihood

through the selling of their hand carved olive wood religious articles.

Due to the bad situation in the Holy Land and the interruption

of the tourist trade that is happening with our Christian families in Beth-

lehem, they must seek alternative ways to earn a living.

After all masses there will be a display of these beautiful hand

carved items such as nativity scenes, crucifix, rosaries, last supper and

many other beautiful religious statues.

Please stop by and look over the carvings that are available

and help support this self-help project to keep the Children and Chris-

tians living in the Holy Land.

Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowls

Rice Bowls are available at all church entrances. Please take

one home and throughout Lent, drop in your spare change or

currency. All contributions are forwarded to Catholic Relief

Services, which provides life-saving assistance in nearly 100 countries.

CRS works on our behalf to care for the poorest of the poor in our world

and to end global poverty. CRS also funds agricultural and water pro-

jects and mother and child health projects. The CRS Rice Bowl Project

asks us to: Pray to deepen our relationship with God and to reflect on

what type of person He calls us to be. Fast to remove the things that get

between us and God and to live in solidarity with those in need. Give

Alms to our brothers and sisters in need, honoring Jesus’ call to serve

our neighbor.

Prayer Shawl Ministry

at St. Augustine

St. Augustine’s Prayer Shawl Ministry is looking for people

that knit, crochet, embroider, etc. to join their Prayer Shawl

ministry. The next meeting will be held on Saturday, March

21, 2020 from 10am to noon at St. Augustine in St. Monica’s

hall. Any parishioner of St. Augustine and Good Shepherd

can request a prayer shawl for someone whom you feel

needs comfort by calling Ann Denoncour at 508-883-6714 or

by calling the parish office at 508-883-8794. These shawls

bring a tangible sign of God’s love in comfort to each recipi-

ent.
