PARISH MISSION STATEMENT Our Mission: Knowing that all things in this world are gifts of God, presented to us so that we can know God more easily and make a return of love more readily; recognizing God as the Origin of Life, the giver of freedom and the source of all that we have and are and will be; knowing ourselves to be recipients and caretakers of God’s many gifts; grateful for all that we have received; eager to cultivate our gifts out of love for God and one another. The Mission of the Good Shepherd Parish is to give witness and to celebrate the Risen Christ’s Presence in the life of each person. To accomplish this goal we ask our parishioners and visitors to recommit themselves to being disciples of Jesus and in so doing we will strengthen our community and help one another to live our faith in the fullest possible way. “in necessary things, unity; in doubtful things, freedom; and in all things, charity.” Augustine

Gospel: (Matthew 28:16-20) The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them. When they saw him, they worshipped, but they doubted. Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.” Reflection
Matthew gives us the clearest reference to the Holy Trinity when Christ sends out the Eleven to make disciples of all nations, “baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” This is the only ritual evidence we have regarding Baptism. That the manner to baptize is given in this Scripture carries a twofold meaning; first that the Trinitarian blessing is essential to Christian Baptism and that the other ritual details are up to each Apostle to determine as he sees fit. This would account for the great diversity among the early Christian communities, especially in regard to the Eucharist.

Vineyard Lights, a full-color coffee table book that documents all of the stained glass of Good Shepherd Parish, is hot off the press and is available for purchase at St. Augustine’s church. Parish Finance Council: Fr. Nagle and Beth would like to thank the following parishioners for their “yes” to serve on our parish council and there will be a few others joining as well. Valerio Destefani, Judy Federowicz, Mark Alexander, and George Balco. The Parish Finance Council forms a critical advisory function. The Council will help in reviewing annual budgets, parish income statements on a quarterly basis, assist in the creation of capital campaign plans, review and assist in the creation of annual reports for parishioners, and advise the pastor on ad hoc financial matters such as investments, beneficiary trusts, repayments of any debt, and safeguarding the assets of the parish.
St. Augustine’s Lift: Wow! It is still hard to believe that we actually have a LIFT! The LIFT is successfully going up and down and has been well received. Marie Mercer, our leader, realized our need and decided to act on it. We would like to thank: Darran Reubens, the architect, for his clear design, Joe Capobianco, who found creative ways to make it happen and attended to countless details, and Fr. Nagle, who believed in the project and fully supported it. Our church community was so generous with prayers and donations. Thank YOU! There were also many special, heartfelt dedications in the Book of Elevation. When we introduced the project at the beginning of last summer, we pointed out that our parish prayed the Year of Mercy prayer each weekend from December 8, 2015 to December 8, 2016, and we requested the intercession of Mary, the Mother of Mercy. Fr. Nagle had explained that mercy is 5% forgiveness and 95% healing. By having a LIFT added to easily access the basement we are ALL able to gather as a community. This has helped to heal our church building. Perhaps you have noticed that the outside door is painted blue, which is Mary’s color. We are all so grateful.

Young Musicians Joining Good Shepherd Parish This Summer! We have a wonderful group of young Catholic musicians joining us starting this Memorial Day weekend May 26/27.
Thomas Muglia and Benjamin Cortez will be here through June 9/10. MaryAnne Muglia and Dominic Smith will follow
Father’s Day weekend through July 1st. Stay tuned, more to follow!
Since birth, 18-year-old Thomas Muglia, from Gilbert, Arizona, has been surrounded by music. His mother was a music teacher and his father, a singer-songwriter, once had a soundproof studio in their backyard. From a young age, Thomas has been refining his prodigious talent amongst friends and family, in multiple choirs at church and school, in coffee houses and at open mic nights. In high school, Thomas found a passion for performing and songwriting. He soon came into his own, leading worship at church, playing gigs throughout the Phoenix area and writing and recording his own music. He was on American Idol in 2016. http://thomasmuglia.com/
Benjamin was born in Mesa, Arizona into a family of musicians. From an early age, he was encouraged to explore numerous instruments and his parents' enormous CD and record collection. After his parents recognized his natural ability to recall and perform melodies he heard, they arranged for him to take piano lessons. He soon after learned his way around his dad's guitars and basses, and at age 7, began to play drums for church services. From then until today, Benjamin has jumped at every opportunity to play music professionally and better his craft, including performances at national Catholic conferences, performing with his bands Aunt B and The Jaime Cortez Band, and other freelance studio and live gigs in the metropolitan Phoenix Area. He now studies jazz performance with a focus on piano at Arizona State University. https://www.benjamincortezmusic.com/
MaryAnne, older sister of Thomas, is a singer/songwriter born and raised in Tempe
AZ. Things she loves includes the piano, singing for people, string quartets, and gluten
-free foods, especially in the local restaurants!! She is so grateful for all of the
wonderful friendships made, and experiences she has had over the past few years and
is so excited to continue pursuing music. MaryAnne is a student at Northern Arizona
University and a member of the band Ezekiel. Follow her on Facebook at MaryAnne
Muglia or Instagram @maryannemugliamusic
Similarly, Dominic is the child of Catholic musicians and a student at NAU who shares that he has been lucky enough to share many musical experiences with many different people over the course of his life, and he has found that there's nothing quite like creating music with people. He is also a member in the band Ezekiel. Follow him on Facebook at Dominic Smith: A Mumblr or Instagram @thebandezekiel

(West Tisbury Library Tuesdays and Thursdays 12-1pm / Oak Bluffs Library Wednesdays and Fridays 12-1pm / The Family Center Mondays and Wednesdays 11:30am-12:30pm)
The IGI Summer Lunch Program was designed to help make sure that children have access to healthy meals while school is out. Our current organizing partners include the West Tisbury Congregational Church, Edgartown Federated Church, the Hebrew Center, the Food Panty , Good Shepherd Parish and St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church.

The Holy Trinity: The Central Mystery of our Christian Faith and Life
Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity which is a mystery difficult to comprehend. In our daily lives we begin (or should begin) every one of our prayers, activities, programs or works with the Sign of the Cross and call upon God, “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” Even if we remember the Trinity several times a day, it is difficult to understand the full meaning because the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit we invoke constitute a great mystery--the central mystery of our Christian faith and life. The Most Holy Trinity consists of this: the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God, and yet there are not three Gods, but only one God with three attributes. We have Father who is the Creator; Son, the Redeemer; and Holy Spirit, the Sanctifier and the Counselor. This is the Mystery of the Trinity of Persons in the one God. Our faith tells us that these three Persons are indeed distinct and yet together.
Jesus himself tells us that just as the living Father has sent him, he is sending out his disciples. They have to go and baptize all in the name of the Trinity. He also tells us that he and the Father are one and he will send the Spirit on the Apostles who will counsel and guide them in their work. The divine missions of the Son and the Holy Spirit fulfill God’s plan of loving goodness, which the atrium children come to know in the Kingdom of God materials. We pray on Sundays in our Profession of Faith (the Creed): I believe in God, the Father almighty … and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord …I believe in the Holy Spirit … The first person is the Father and he is called Father because he is the source of life for the Son. The second person is called the Son because he receives his life from the Father. Father and Son love each other with a love more complete and perfect than we can imagine. Their love is so perfect that it is a person, the Holy Spirit. The third person then is the personal love between Father and Son and is the bond of Union between the Father and the Son. Or reflect on the Offering prayer of the Eucharist, “Through him, and with him, and in him, O God almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours for ever and ever.” Together we sing the Great Amen, joining our belief and trust in God as one body sharing in the very life of God.
What’s the Big Deal about Church?
Why is she so important? Because she is how we know Jesus. She tells us (by her teaching), shows us (by her saints) and feeds us (by her sacraments). Why is Jesus so important? Because He is how we know God. He told us, showed us, and fed us. Why is God so important? Because He is how we know love. He IS love. Why is love so important? Because it’s how we know happiness.
Without love, our happiness is not true happiness. Without God, our love is not true love.
Without Jesus, our God is not the true God. Without the Church, our Jesus is not the true Jesus.”
- Peter Kreeft, Before I Go: Letters to Our Children about what Really Matters

As We Remember Those That Protect Us, On Memorial Day and Always… No one has greater love than this, To lay down one’s life for one’s friends. John 15:13
Dear God, Thank You for the men and women who protect us and preserve Your gifts of life, country, and freedom at home and abroad, even at the sacrifice of their own lives. They and their families are the true heroes among us.
As we remember all those who have laid down their lives so that we can continue to enjoy the rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Let Your perpetual light shine upon them, and grant them eternal rest. Please send out Your angels to protect all who serve our country, and keep us free from injustice and harm. In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen
The Movie - Pope Francis - A Man of His Word,
written and directed by three-time Academy Award nominee Wil Wenders, is intended to be a personal journey with Pope Francis, rather than a biographical documentary about him. A rare co-production with the Vatican, the pope’s ideas and his message are central to this documentary, which sets out to present his work of reform and his answers to today’s global questions from death, social justice, immigration, ecology, wealth inequality, materialism, and the role of family. The move opens in Vineyard Haven on June 1.
