“They were unanimous in their praise

of our Pelican Waters Golf Course.”

WHAT A FANTASTIC start to the year we’ve had here at the Palm Lake Group. I was lucky to enjoy the Isuzu Queensland Open golf tournament at Pelican Waters Golf Club in recent weeks. There was a great vibe around the golf club that weekend - it was quite the community event. There was also a proud moment for Palm Lake Group Managing Director Scott Elliott and I to be at the presentation of Anthony Quayle’s first ever professional win at our company’s golf course. The young Queenslander was humble in his accomplishment and we look forward to watching his career progress. Speaking to many of the golf professionals at the Queensland Open, they were unanimous in their praise of our Pelican Waters Golf Course. It was immaculately presented and we must give credit to the team who worked tirelessly to get the course looking sharp for the event - even in torrential rain in the days leading up to tee off. The positive response to the event (and Pelican Waters Golf Club on the whole) bodes well for our redevelopment of the precinct. In exciting and timely news, most of the main council approvals for this project have now been received and we will accelerate the project, starting with a renovation of the clubhouse and driving range. Watch this space.

In other great company news around approvals, all the critical approvals for Palm Lake Resort Forster have now also been received and we have engaged our civils contractor for the project. Earthworks will start on this site in earnest in April and, alongside Pelican Waters, these will be some of the most comprehensive earthworks we’ve done in any one project in the history of the Palm Lake Group. While it’s always hard to predict the weather (and its impact on construction site schedules), we anticipate having houses to sell at this location at the start of 2021. With around 1000 people already on our Palm Lake Resort Forster contact list, it’s one project that I know will move quickly. To keep up to date with progress on the site and be first to hear of our stage releases, make sure you contact our Sales Centre on 1800 756 740 to add your contact details to that list.

Another big project that we will undertake in autumn is the Palm Lake Resort Beachmere Bay eight-rink championship undercover lawn bowls green. The steel work will commence as this magazine goes to press and we aim to be celebrating the official opening of this highly anticipated resort facility late in June. While on the subject of Beachmere Bay, our highly skilled golf course maintenance professionals from Pelican

Waters Golf Club have been spending time here, working on this resort’s own nine-hole golf course. We are lucky to have this calibre of golfing know-how within the Palm Lake Group and Beachmere Bay’s course will surely attract many sporting enthusiasts whose retirement dream is easy-access golf.

Rounding out my company update, we are on the final countdown to the opening of our fifth and sixth aged caring communities in Beachmere and Toowoomba respectively. Beachmere will welcome its first residents in June and we can’t wait to show you around this opulent, absolute waterfront community that is truly breaking the mould when it comes to aged care.

Enjoy the read. This is your time.

BRINGING THE SWING

It was just the third time in the tournament’s 95-year history that it was played on the Sunshine Coast and golf enthusiasts of the region definitely celebrated the return of the event. It offered a few other notable milestones. Anthony Quayle, 24, fought off brilliant South Australian amateur Jack Thompson at the first hole of a sudden-death playoff to give the young Queensland golfer his first professional win – made all the more special being on Anthony’s home soil.

“I’m really pumped at the moment,” Anthony told Golf Australia, straight after his win. “It hasn’t sunk in yet. But it feels incredible!”

In another milestone, Sarah Wilson became only the second female in the 95-year history of the Queensland Open to tee up against the men - an especially sweet moment on her “home track”.

“It’ll be interesting to test my game amongst the other men but I’m super grateful for the opportunity to compete and see how good I can go,” Sarah said, in the lead-up to the event. “I’ll give it a good nudge.”

The 19-year-old amateur ended up in tied 64th position among the field of 132 players.

THE PALM LAKE RESORT brand is synonymous with luxury over-50s community lifestyle resorts. But, did you know our family-owned company was also responsible for last month bringing the 2020 Isuzu Queensland Open golf tournament back to the Sunshine Coast for the first time in 30 years?

Palm Lake Group took ownership of Pelican Waters Golf Club back in November 2018. The Greg Norman-designed course is one of Australia’s premier courses which made it the perfect addition to the Palm Lake Group portfolio of 35 exclusive over-50s residential communities up and down Australia’s east coast. Part of the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia, the $137,500 Queensland Open was played from February 20-23 at Pelican Waters Golf Club.

For more and more Palm Lake Resort residents, golf makes their world go around. Whether an ex-champion player, a lifelong fanatic, or a weekend hack, there are many various benefits associated with the game - which is why Palm Lake Group is putting more focus on this popular sporting pastime.

AUTUMN EDITION 2020

Page 4: Good things come in twos - Palm Lake Resort

Palm Lake Group Managing Director Scott Elliott says the Queensland Open was a boon for the Sunshine Coast.

“We were very excited to partner with Golf Australia and bring a major event of this calibre back to the Sunshine Coast after three decades, both for the benefit of the game and for the benefit of our local community,” Scott says.

Exciting times ahead Palm Lake Group CEO Manuel Lang says the company’s purchase of Pelican Waters Golf Club and associated development land (including an approved residential precinct) secured the future of the establishment. Agreements in place with Sunshine Coast Council will deliver more than 33 hectares of rehabilitated conservation land to the local community and secure a reconfigured golf course with a sports and recreation zoning in perpetuity.

“Our redevelopment of the Club and the Greg Norman-designed golf course will exceed all expectations of quality and finish,” he says. According to Manuel, earthworks alone for the redevelopment of this site will make it “one of the most significant projects” of any in the Palm Lake Group’s 40-year history. He confirmed that work will begin on the renovation of the clubhouse and driving range shortly.

We love golfGolf is a significant feature among the various Palm Lake Resort lifestyle communities. The sport has been acknowledged for keeping residents physically active and healthy, their minds alert and, importantly, their social calendars full.

From our newest resort locations and their state-of-the-art golf simulator rooms, residents and their guests can tee off on 19 different courses from all over the world, and still make it home in time for lunch. Or maybe you want to live alongside the ‘real thing’? As well as a golf simulator room, Palm Lake Resort Beachmere Bay offers its very own nine-hole golf course that meanders between wildlife-filled waterways in a green belt immediately adjacent to the resort. There’s also a separate four-hole course alongside adjacent Palm Lake Resort Beachmere Sands which is further helping the local Palm Lake Resort residents get their daily dose of greens - and iron! Other Palm Lake Resort addresses offer mini-golf-style, chip-and-putt greens (which are also a magnet for visiting family members and grandchildren!) as well as golf enthusiast social groups.

Play Pelican Waters Golf Course for FREE until 2028 - with your new home!Located just one hour north of Brisbane in the stunning surrounds of Caloundra’s Golden Beach, Pelican Waters Golf Club is bounded by lush bushland and scenic creek

land. The designers have intelligently integrated this amazing natural landscape and translated it to a simply exhilarating golfing terrain. A Greg-Norman designed golf course with superior greens, undercover driving range, practice putting and chipping greens and a well-stocked golf shop, it’s not surprising that Pelican Waters ranks among the best in the country – it has been voted No. 25 in the Top 100 Public Access Golf Courses (thanks to Golf Australia Magazine 2019) as well as No. 1 golf course on the Sunshine Coast.

In celebration of the successful Isuzu Queensland Open, Palm Lake Group is offering new homeowners the chance to play Pelican Waters Golf Club FREE until 2028! This FREE membership offer applies to any new home purchased between April 1 and September 30, 2020, at Palm Lake Resorts Beachmere Bay, Caloundra Cay, Cooroy-Noosa or Toowoomba. RESORT UPDATES

Toowoomba Bargara

>> Continued on Page 10

Palm Lake Resort has been supporting the artistic pursuits of our creative homeowners for years, so it is only natural that we’d support the artistic talents of other artists via the upcoming annual Toowoomba Grammar School Art Show on March 28-29. Palm Lake Resort is the diamond sponsor of the event, which will feature the work of more than 250 artists from right across Australia. Attendees will enjoy more than 800 art pieces on display (and for sale, priced from $40). In the lead up to the show, you can follow a special Art Trail which will see featured art pieces hanging in prominent locations around town, including the Palm Lake Resort Toowoomba Sales Centre! Drop into the centre to enjoy the art and grab a coffee while you’re there.

Four shiny new Mercedes Benz buses will be spotted on the streets of Toowoomba as of this month, bearing distinctive Palm Lake Resort branding as they ferry our residents around town on a daily bus route. The buses will take resort passengers on shopping trips and more. Daily trips run from 12 noon to 2pm which is such a convenience (and great social fun!) for our homeowners.

In another announcement that will benefit the homeowners of Palm Lake Resort and the greater Toowoomba area, Darling Downs Health has grand plans to redevelop Toowoomba Hospital. The new additional campus will be “strikingly beautiful” with multi-disciplinary health services, located north of the CBD, adjacent to the second range crossing.

At Palm Lake Resort Bargara, the news on everyone’s lips is our exciting resort extension. The purchase of an additional parcel of land adjacent to Palm Lake Resort Bargara, fronting Rifle Range Road, settled in late 2019 and plans are well underway for the expansion of our current resort. The additional area provides Palm Lake Resort with the opportunity to develop more than 100 new homes, many of which will offer the coveted RV garage design to support the community of travelling adventure seekers who seem to flock to this location. With a warm and sunny, holiday-everyday climate not unlike Hawaii, Bargara is a popular base for over-50s looking for that seachange lifestyle in Queensland. As well as all the new homes, this extension will house an additional country club and tropical resort-style pool, giving all Palm Lake Resort Bargara residents access to three exclusive country clubs across the entire resort – more than any other Palm Lake Resort address across Australia’s east coast. Palm Lake Group is working with residents to finalise their preferred inclusions for this facility which may include, among other things, a tenpin bowling alley, billiards room, bar, outdoor fire pit and more. Construction of new homes will begin later this year but, in the meantime, for those interested in this development, Palm Lake Resort’s ‘Priority Purchase Offer’ exists. If you purchase a home in the existing Palm Lake Resort Bargara with a view to later buying in the new extension, you will enjoy significant benefits which are best explained by our local Sales Team, so feel free to contact them to find out more.

It seems good news comes in twos at our newest and most exclusive and distinctive Palm Lake Resort address. Caloundra Cay’s three-bedroom, two-storey homes have been a unique addition to the Palm Lake Group’s collection of designs, where ground-level homes have, in the past, been the norm. Recently, however, these spacious and luxurious two-storey designs have had an exciting upgrade – an internal lift now comes as standard. These luxury new home designs fuse opulence, sophistication and that trademark Caribbean vibe that Caloundra Cay has become known for and the addition of a lift is a convenient cherry on top – not to mention a pretty cool conversation piece!

The local Sales Team will unveil some brand new ‘doubly delightful’ two-storey display homes at a vibrant Caribbean Street Party like no other. The streets of Caloundra Cay will literally come alive with the sights, sounds and tastes of the Caribbean for the event on April 29. Make sure you keep the date free and freecall the Sales Centre to confirm your name is on the invitation list.

Caloundra Cay’s resident population is increasing at lightning speed which means we’ve been able to extend the resort activities calendar to include extra events, movie screenings and more. They’ve recently started a ukulele group, tenpin bowling group and added an art workshop giving residents an introduction to watercolour, acrylics and sketching. It’s facilitated by resident Delwynne, who studied art at Eastern Washington University and was a director of the San Diego Watercolour Society. She has judged art competitions and previously taught in the USA, at the Watercolour Society of Brisbane and in her own watercolour school. There is such a depth of talent at this resort already and it’s only growing!

AUTUMN EDITION 2020

As news of Palm Lake Resort Cooroy-Noosa’s coveted community lifestyle spreads, Stage 5 sales have been progressing fast. Boundary homes in this stage are hot property with their leafy bush outlook and private, north-facing orientation. However, there are still a few of these great spots remaining for those who act quickest. Beyond Stage 5, the final stage of the resort is underway and our local Sales Centre is looking forward to marketing those last homes in the second half of 2020.

As this magazine goes to press, work continues on the resort’s exciting new recreation room. It’s a facility that has been born out of necessity. A freestanding building situated next to the Bowls Club, the room will house a studio for our resort’s enthusiastic yoga and tai chi devotees as well as doubling as a location for our resident rock band’s weekly jam session (not at the same time, we may add!). We love to inspire and encourage our residents in their personal interests and facilities like this add to their lifestyle. We look forward to (literally) ‘hearing’ more on the Rec Room - especially on band days!

Speaking about our wonderful resident population, there’s a dedicated group who are developing a very profitable recycling program, turning our resort’s empty bottles and cans into cash which is then being turned into useable items such as a community trailer, and more. We love the energy this group brings to the program and we are equally grateful to see these kinds of sustainable practises embraced.

There’s real excitement in the air at Beachmere Bay right now (and it’s not just the invigorating Moreton Bay seabreeze!). During autumn, there will be an exclusive release of just 15 premium waterfront homesites within Stage 1a. This stage will feature 31 homes in total and offers a mix of all nine designs available right across the greater resort (ranging in size from 185-245sqm). However, it will be just an exclusive 15 of these 31 homes that will enjoy direct canal access and the relaxed ambience that organically emanates from a position as grand as this. Anyone interested in this premium and unique release of canal homes is urged to contact the Beachmere Bay Sales Centre now to put their name on the list to be among the first to know when Stage 1a becomes available.

In the meantime, if you haven’t already visited Beachmere Bay to learn more about life at Palm Lake Resort, there will be a decadent ‘Oh so Hamptons’ Beach House event on March 24. Following this event, in early June, there will also be a huge community market-style open day. This large-scale, family-friendly event will see the greater Beachmere community and local business owners descend on Beachmere Bay. With market stalls, food trucks, performing school students, live music, roving entertainment and more, it’ll provide a great opportunity for visitors to tour our resort grounds and look through Palm Lake Care Beachmere, which will be newly open at this time. Local families will be encouraged to bring a picnic rug, take in the entertainment and enjoy a taste of what our beautiful local Beachmere community has to offer. Stay tuned for more details as we get closer to the event.

AUTUMN EDITION 2020

Putting personal touches on a newly-acquired house is what makes that house a home. And when buying off the plan at Palm Lake Resort, we’ll help you do just that!

INSPECTING YOUR FUTURE home in two dimensions, printed in black and white on large-scale paper, may be a less-traditional way of buying real estate. However, if you are willing to buy off the plan (as is an option at all of our newest Palm Lake Resort locations), the benefits can be game changers.

It’s important to remember that all the newest Palm Lake Resort developments offer multiple display homes for in-terested buyers to walk through. These fully furnished and inspiring abodes come in an ever-changing array of designs and help our buyers get the answers to any questions they may have about their potential off-the-plan purchase.

According to Palm Lake Resort Caloundra Cay Sales Manag-er Alysia Nechvoglod, buying a Palm Lake Resort home off the plan means the homeowner can put bespoke finishes on their home - as long as they do so before the home’s slab goes down.

“They can choose all their preferred internal paint colours, benchtops and cabinetry,” Alysia says. “They can also upgrade their ceiling fans, floor tiles or even choose timber flooring.”

While external colours are not able to be changed, Alysia says Palm Lake Resort’s construction team is also flexible with other minor variations.

“Maybe the homeowner wants extra power points or a power point in a different location – we can help them with that if the home is bought early enough,” she says.

“While Palm Lake Resort’s standard colour ranges are wonderful neutral palettes developed by our highly ex-perienced consulting interior designer, when we give our off-the-plan buyers the opportunity to choose their own internal colours, for example, it makes theirs a much more personalised home that they can instantly connect with.

“Buying off the plan at Palm Lake Resort means that a homeowner can create the home they really want.”

Palm Lake Resort Regional Sales Manager Jen Nichols says beyond the physical changes a homeowner can make when buying off the plan, the other big benefit comes with plan-ning the actual move itself.

“Buying off the plan means you have the opportunity to work the timing to your advantage. Once you know when your new Palm Lake Resort home will be complete, you’ve got more freedom to plan the best time of year to sell your existing home, to prepare your home for sale and then to settle the sale of your existing home so you can move straight into your newly completed Palm Lake Resort home,” Jen says. “Buying off the plan gives you peace of mind, with the ease of moving from one home to another without the need to rent in between.

“And remember that unlike typical buy-off-the-plan devel-opers who require a sizable deposit and ongoing progress payments, at Palm Lake Resort you can sign up for a home for as little as a $1000 deposit.”

You can buy off-the-plan homes at Palm Lake Resorts Caloundra Cay, Beachmere Bay, Cooroy-Noosa, Toowoom-ba and Bargara. To find out what opportunities await in your preferred location, contact that Sales Centre. Contact details can be found on Page 34 of this magazine.

IT GOES WITHOUT saying that our needs change as we age. Whether it’s your backyard pool or your pool table, there are some things that you are willing to give up now that you’re a little bit older. Your family home is no different. But downsizing comes with its own set of challenges. How do you condense a lifetime of memories into a much small-er space? Enter, the KonMari method. Outlined in Marie Kondo’s 2014 book, ‘The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up,’ the KonMari method has been celebrated the world over by people who say it really did change their life. It’s less about decluttering and more about keeping what makes you truly happy. Approach it with the view that everything in your house is going except for the things that spark real joy - and you will be amazed at the results.

“A common misconception is that KonMari will make you a minimalist, but that is not necessarily true,” says Gemma Quinn, Australia’s first certified KonMari consultant. “As long as something makes you happy, you can have it – just make sure you celebrate and enjoy it.”

One of only two master KonMari consultants in Australia, Gemma frequently travels between her current base in Melbourne and her hometown of Brisbane sharing her knowledge. As Gemma explains, the KonMari method asserts that tidying up is the tool to help you live your best life. As such, your first step is to imagine exactly what your ‘best life’ might look like.

“Look at it from a macro level first – maybe you want to cruise through the rest of your life?” says Gemma. “Then, take it to the micro level – does ‘cruising’ mean drinking tea from your favourite cup every morning, or going to see a couple of movies every week? From here, you can begin to implement the small changes that will help you achieve your ultimate goal.”

A big part of KonMari is keeping the things that ‘spark joy’. And while this may seem easy to apply to sentimental items, there is some confusion as to how more practical items – like, say, a spatula – can spark the same kind of joy.

“Pick up any object, and I can guide you to find joy in it,” says Gemma. “You may ‘just’ see a frying pan, but if it heats quickly, stops your mixture from sticking to it and gives you the fluffiest, tastiest pancakes, then that fry pan enables you to live your best life.”

Now, use that fry pan as a gauge to compare your other fry pans. You will quickly notice how few spark true joy – and how few you actually use when you cook. And if you don’t use them when you cook, why give them space in your home?

The humble fry pan is, of course, just one of many things you can apply the KonMari method to. The KonMari method recommends tidying by category, not location. It stipulates that you should begin with clothes, then books, papers, kimono (ie. miscellaneous items) and, finally, senti-mental items.

“The idea is to develop your sensitivity to what ‘sparks joy’ as you go through the process,” explains Gemma.

Go around the house and collect every paper, for example. This will allow you to see them all in the same place at the same time. This, Gemma says, will help you weigh up what’s important to you – like with the fry pan, seeing similar items together will help you decide which one sparks joy.

“Go from easiest to hardest in each category,” says Gemma. “Socks, for example, may be easier to tidy up than your

When organisation extraordinaire Marie Kondo shot to global stardom, so too did her ‘KonMari’ method of tidying. But how can the ‘Japanese art of decluttering and organising’ help you downsize?

SPARK JOY IN DOWNSIZING

dresses. Consider which socks are your very favourite socks to wear – maybe they feel good in your shoes when you play tennis, or are discreet enough to wear with your favourite shiny shoes? Find your three favourite things in each category and use them to discern whether the other items spark the same joy.”

The goal of the KonMari method is to free your life of clutter and obligation, to enable you to do the things you truly want to do. That may mean discarding that unfinished knitting project that has been hanging over your head, or saying goodbye to a relationship that has caused you grief.

“When you let go of something with gratitude and un-derstanding, it’s liberating,” says Gemma. “Be truthful to yourself and consider what really sparks joy – free from obligation or someone else’s expectation.”

Let go of the tools that don’t help you, and the things that won’t help you live your best life. Use the good china – or, if you don’t like doing the washing up, use crockery you can put into the dishwasher.

“Tidying up in this way is a big deal,” says Gemma. “It can be life-changing and liberating if you want it to be, but you can’t do it without being honest with yourself.”

Most of us know that we have too much stuff, but it can be incredibly emotional trying to part with things that have decades of personal memories attached to them. It’s important to remember that KonMari is there to help you choose the very best bits of your life to take with you into the future – it’s helping you put several suitcases of emo-tional baggage into one easy-to-carry duffel bag.

“Going into retirement is so exciting; you get to do all of those things you’ve always wanted to do, whether it’s knit, cook or play golf,” says Gemma. “But so many people don’t know what it is that brings them real, true joy, and the goal of the KonMari method is to find that out.”

Ask your children...If they could keep just one item of yours, what would it be? You don’t have to give it to them now – or do so, if you are happy to let it go. “It’s a beautiful conversation to have with your children and their answers might surprise you,” says Australia’s first certified KonMari consultant (and master) Gemma Quinn. “It will be the obscure things – a cake tin, or a clock that has always been on your night-stand – that you wouldn’t otherwise realise they have a connection to.”

FOR MOST OF US, wallpaper is something reserved for the glossy pages of interior design magazines – seemingly too difficult for any mere mortal to execute. But according to interior design extraordinaire Eleanor Davis (who is responsible for styling all the newest Palm Lake Resort country clubs and display homes as well as the amazing Palm Lake Care aged caring communities), it doesn’t have to be that way. Wallpaper can, and should, be used to add a touch of elegance to any home.

“A lot of people shy away from wallpaper, but it creates such a timeless ambience,” says Eleanor. But Eleanor doesn’t just advocate for any wallpaper – she says it’s a case of the darker and moodier, the better.

“I love dark wallpaper, especially when it has a linen look,” Eleanor explains. “If you have a light-coloured sofa and a dark wall, it’s magical.”

For the unconvinced, try one small wall or section at a time. Whether it’s the end of a hallway, one side of a bath-room or even behind your bed, it won’t take long to fall in love with wallpaper’s ability to transform your space.

“When it comes to styling your wallpaper, pair the décor back and keep the furniture light and simple to create contrast,” says Eleanor. “It’s a waste to not put anything against your wallpaper, so consider an eye-catching mirror or a large artwork if nothing else.”

But most importantly, have fun experimenting! There are a number of removable wallpapers on the market now – check out The Wall Sticker Company or LuxeWalls online – so there’s less pressure to get it right on the first try. Consider where you will put your wallpaper, which colours you have to work with and say hello to your new, maga-zine-worthy home.

“I personally don’t think a house is the same without wall-paper,” says Eleanor. “For me, it’s always hot!”

So, you’ve made the decision to sell your home. With these tips from Palm Lake Resort’s resident interior designer, Eleanor Davis, you can capitalise on the selling process and embark your next adventure with your best foot forward.

PREPARING YOUR HOME FOR SALE

Heaven scentLooks aren’t everything when it comes to real estate – sometimes, it’s the smells that sell. Fill your home with these scents to nudge buyers toward an offer.

Citrus It’s said to be the most appealing scent for buyers, and one field test found that scents with citrus notes could add tens of thousands of dollars to what a buyer thinks a home is worth.

Baked goods From bread to brownies, filling a home with the smell of baked goods is one of the oldest tricks in the real estate book. Even today, studies have shown that it’s still effective.

Subtle scents Sometimes the less distracting the scent, the better. Options like pine, cedar or scented herbs are complex yet subtle, allowing your buyer to focus on what’s really impor-tant – your home.

ELEANOR DAVISPALM LAKE GROUP

INTERIOR DESIGNER

“Your buyer needs to be able to visualise themselves in the space. ”

WHETHER IT’S TOO LARGE, too high-maintenance, or maybe it just doesn’t feel like home anymore, making the decision to sell your house is a big one. As enticing as your next step may be (into a community of likeminded neighbours in a lifestyle resort equipped with world-class facilities, perhaps?!) the sentimental value you attach to your home can cloud the selling process. Thankfully, Palm Lake Group interior designer Eleanor Davis has years of experience making homes look their very best.

“When it comes to selling your home, first impressions count,” says El-eanor. “Presentation is key, so ensure your home is looking spectacular before allowing inspections to begin.”

Set the standard from the start, Eleanor says, by ensuring the front of your property – including the pavements, garage door and front door area – is clean and clear of any hazards or unsightly distractions. Your buyer wants to know that they are purchasing a home that has been well cared for, so deal with any minor maintenance, too. When they cross the threshold into your home, your buyer wants to feel welcomed – a home that feels cold and empty probably won’t bring them back for a second inspection. But with that being said, it is also important to declutter and depersonalise, says Eleanor.

“Your buyer needs to be able to visualise themselves in the space,” says Eleanor, “which could be hard to do if you have personal trinkets and photographs all over the place.”

Go for a simplified palette and use colour in strategic places. While you may love your bright, mismatched dining chairs or gaudy chaise lounge, eccentric furniture or bright feature walls could make it hard for your buyer to visualise themselves in the space. While you don’t need to spend a small fortune, it is important to purchase pieces that accen-tuate your space. Two beautiful lamps in the lounge room and some carefully chosen cushions and nick knacks will make all the difference.

“If you can, go out and buy a nice rug in a neutral colour,” says Eleanor. “Try to find a rug that’s around two-by-three metres – put the feet of your couch on the rug and you should still have plenty of room for a coffee table.”

Ensure all your furniture is correctly positioned in each room, moving it away from the walls where possible to make your space look larger.

“You’ll notice this trick applied to display homes, and it makes such a difference,” says Eleanor.

The more space you can create without the house looking empty, the better, so embark on a decluttering mission prior to your first home in-spection. This will give you a clear space to work with, and also be a big help when it comes time to pack up your things and move out.

“The kitchen is one place that can easily become cluttered, so hide your appliances where possible,” says Eleanor. “Leave any upmarket oils and wines on a tray on the countertop, add a beautiful plant and a bowl of fruit and you’re sorted.”

The Kitty Kats and their five-piece band have become firm crowd favourites across many Palm Lake Resorts. This time they blew the roof off Toowoomba’s Pinnacle Country Club (picured left), bringing their 1940s sassy swingin’ soundtrack to a dance floor full of appreciative guests.

Invited guests could not help but fall in love with Palm Lake Resort Caloundra Cay when they visited on Valentine’s Day (pictured right). There was a sumptuous lunch in the opulent Hemingway’s Country Club, live entertainment, smiles, laughs and loads of love (for the display homes!) shared.

The crown jewel of New South Wales’ mid-north coast, Forster is a seaside escape that was just voted best regional destination in the state in Wotif’s 2019 Aussie Town of the Year Awards. And we’re building a Palm Lake Resort there!

suburb spotlight FORSTER, NSW

The wavesLovers of the ocean will feel right at home at Forster – perched on the oceanic inlet of the Coolongolook River, the surrounding beaches and lakes make it the ultimate natural playground. Take in the stretches of white and deep blue from just about any direction or head out on the surrounding waterways which are peppered with islands to explore. The best place to make the most of the views is Bennetts Head lookout – perfectly positioned on the rocky outcrop, this spot offers sweeping views of the surrounding cliffs, beaches and the Tasman Sea. Or, head a little further up the road to the lookout at Second Head. It’s here that you’ll have prime view-ing of the Forster Ocean Baths and, across the river, Forster’s twin town of Tuncurry.

The flavoursIt wasn’t just the stunning water and natural surrounds that scored Forster a nod in the Wotif awards – it’s also a hub for delicious food. Traditional Forster flavour is home-grown and hearty, and there are plenty of places to grab a mouth-wa-tering bite around town. Beach Bums Café, perched right on Forster’s main beach, is the perfect spot for a casual, quality meal. Bella Bellissimo sees patrons chow down on delicious pizza or pasta while eating up the lake views through the large windows. Not to mention, you can get your fill on a number of different cuisines, from Turkish to Chinese and everything in between. And of course, don’t miss out on an oyster while you’re in town. Wallis Lake Oyster Company is a

primary producer of the world famous Sydney Rock Oyster (Emperor SRO) species and export these incredible morsels right around the world.

The wild Wallis Lake is your portal to Forster’s surrounding towns and islands, including Green Point – which is right on the doorstep of beautiful Booti Booti National Park – Coomba Bay and Whoota. To Forster’s north, Darawank Nature Reserve offers untouched beaches, calm, clear waters and hiking trails. Closer by, get lost exploring hidden beaches and pristine bushland. McBrides Beach offers rock pools and grassy campgrounds, while a visit to The Tanks – on Forster’s main coastline – isn’t just a natural playground for locals on land; there are plenty of fish to say hello to if you take the plunge. For the golfers, there are two great courses nearby, run by the Forster Tuncurry Golf Club. The Forster course is nestled just off One Mile Beach with holes 1 to 6 of the front nine positioned on the beach side of the club house, while the Tuncurry course is carved out of seaside bush land.

AUTUMN EDITION 2020

When it comes to our newest luxury Palm Lake Resort homes, the kitchen is at their heart. And at the heart of those chic kitchens is an equally as sophisticated appliance brand.

THE ITALIANS ARE known the world over as a stylish bunch who manufacture quality products. With origins in the north of Italy, SMEG produces appliances that are stereotypically Italian – and sit perfectly within any modern Palm Lake Resort home’s kitchen.

SMEG was founded by Vittorio Bertazzoni from Guastalla, a town near Reggio Emilia in northern Italy, and is today one of the country’s leading home appliance manufacturers. The Bertazzoni family’s entrepreneurial history began way back in the 19th Century. Starting out as blacksmiths, the Bertazzonis soon branched out into building cookers.

The very first Bertazzoni kitchens were put on show at the World Expo held in Milan in 1906. By 1948, the SMEG company was formed in an era of economic growth and rapid urbanisation. Radical changes in lifestyles and living patterns, the new concept of the nuclear family, and a huge increase in the number of female professionals were all factors inspiring SMEG to develop ground-breaking technologies and products that would meet the demands of this new society and revolutionise home living.

PALM LAKE RESORT kitchens are filled with premium SMEG appliances as standard, including gas/induction cooktops (depending on the resort location), 60cm built-in ovens, dishwashers, rangehoods and microwaves with trim kit. Letesha Kirby, spokesperson for SMEG’s exclusive Australian distributor, says SMEG is the perfect choice for Palm Lake Resort homes for the parallels between the two brands, including premium quality, style and sophis-tication.

“Lifestyle resort homes are some of the last homes that people buy so they deserve to be special and feature premium products,” Letesha says.

SMEG ovens, for example, offer the best cooking results via patented “Thermoseal” technology. Ingeniously, these ovens operate without the constant intake of external air. Using physics, SMEG’s unique and energy-efficient Thermoseal ovens feature precise temperature control, even heat distribution and moisture control within the oven cavity.

To help Palm Lake Resort residents get the most out of their new SMEG appliances, they are invited to attend the SMEG showroom in Brisbane to enjoy a glass of wine, a cooked lunch and all the product information they need. Where residents can’t get to the showroom, Letesha and her team (including SMEG’s own in-house chef, Jan Woods, pictured above) will bring their demonstration to Palm Lake Resort. Either way, residents leave a demonstration with new-found confidence around the operation of their kitchen appliances.

In the second half of the 1950s, SMEG launched one of the first gas cookers with an automatic switch-on function, an oven safety valve and cooking programmer/timer. In 1963, the laundry and dishwasher range was launched and soon produced a world first in 1970: a 60cm, 14-place setting dishwasher.

SMEG has enjoyed a long-standing relationship with Australia. It’s a little-known fact that in 1971, SMEG manufactured the hugely successful range of dishwashers in Australia under the “Dishlex” brand name. In 1986, the SMEG brand was introduced to Australia in its own right.

Fast forward to today, and SMEG is run by the third generation of Bertazzoni entrepreneurs, but it still keeps the memory of its beginnings alive in its Italian name: Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastalla (SMEG) or the “Guastalla Emilia Enamel Works”.

SMEG continues to aim to identify with, and reflect, the defining characteristics of Italian design, such as inventive elegance, originality and product quality.

THE ENGINE ROOMPalm Lake Resort homes offer an array of premium SMEG appliances as standard. And, we’ll make sure you know how to get the most out of those appliances. You’re welcome.

FEED A CROWD IN 30 MINUTESIf you’re entertaining a crowd, your SMEG oven will not let you down. Brisbane-based chef Jan Woods is engaged to demonstrate SMEG appliances to residents of our newest Palm Lake Resorts and she has come up with a range of great ideas to make the most of these quality appliances. Use Jan’s Italian grilled chicken breast recipe as the hero in her clever plan to feed a crowd in 30 minutes…

1. Set your SMEG oven to the fan grill function at 220°C and let it heat up to temperature.

2. Place your tray of prepared Italian grilled chicken breasts (recipe below) on the top shelf of the oven, right under the grill.

3. In a second baking tray, place 8-10 lamb chops, 12 chipolata sausages and five roma tomatoes (halved, seasoned with salt and paper, and drizzled with olive oil). Place this tray directly under the chicken.

4. Directly on the floor of the oven, place two loaves of store-bought garlic bread (use baking paper under them to save the mess).

5. Set your timer for 30 minutes and while your oven is doing its magic, use the time to prepare a couple of beautiful salads or some vegetables as sides. Easy.

Ingredients

4-6 chicken breasts

3 tablespoons dried oregano

2 tablespoons dried thyme

3 tablespoons dried basil

2 tablespoons garlic powder

½ tablespoon dried chilli flakes

Good pinch of sea salt

1 tablespoon grated lemon zest (optional)

1 tablespoon olive oil

Method

Set your SMEG oven to 220°C fan grill. Line a 20cm oven tray with baking paper and add a wire rack. Spray the rack with oil to prevent food sticking.Place chicken breasts in a large zip-lock bag. Add all the above ingredients to the bag, seal, shake and massage until ingredients coat the chicken well. Remove chicken from the bag and place it on the wire rack/tray. Sit it on the top shelf in the oven, right under the grill. Cook at 220°C for around 23-25 minutes.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE

Pictured from top down: 1. SMEG espresso coffee machine, various col-ours, $499. 2. SMEG 1.7l electric kettle in various colours, $199. 3. SMEG stand mixer with wire whisk, aluminium flat beater, dough hook and 1.8L stainless steel bowl included (optional acces-sories available), $639. All available at Harvey Norman and other retailers.

Ingredients

6 good sirloin steaks

Salad:

2 packets of store-bought leaves (your choice, I used rocket, mesculine and spinach leaves).

1 large punnet beautiful mixed cherry tomatoes, cut in half

2 Lebanese cucumbers, sliced diagonally

1 packet fresh bean sprouts

½ bunch spring onions, sliced

1 bunch coriander, cut up (use leaves and stalks)

1 bunch mint, cut up

1 bunch Thai basil, roughly torn

1 large red chilli, cut up (I use seeds too, as I like it spicy!)

Dressing:

½ cup sweet chilli sauce

1 lime, squeezed

2 tablespoons fish sauce

1 clove garlic, crushed

1 dessertspoon chopped fresh ginger or ginger paste

1 dessertspoon coconut sugar

¼ cup water

Method

For salad: Add all the salad ingredients into a large bowl and toss gently.

For steak: Fan grill steaks on top shelf of your oven right under your grill at 220°C degrees for approx. 15-20 minutes or until done to your liking. When steak is cooked, leave to rest for 10 minutes, before slicing finely into strips.

For dressing: Add all ingredients to a small bowl or jug and mix well. Check for taste. Leave aside in fridge and only dress your salad just before serving. Note: You can also buy a good quality Thai dressing as a time saver.

To serve, add steak to salad ingredients and fold through. Add dressing. Do not add all your dressing at once, add half, mix through and taste. I also love to add small edible flowers to make this salad really pretty - and memorable!

Whether it’s indigestion or intuition, your gut can influence your health in more ways than one. Read on to find out why it’s so important to nurture your ‘feeling brain’.

ACCORDING TO HIPPOCRATES, the father of Western medicine, “all disease begins in the gut”. And while his sweeping statement may not be entirely true, research suggests he was certainly onto something.

“If you had to choose one core thing to work on, health wise, for the rest of your life, it would be your gut health,” says Jema Lee, nutritional educator and coach. “Your gut – along with your liver – is the powerhouse of your body.”

An overwhelming array of diseases can be linked to gut health. Autoimmune diseases (think rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Crohn’s and other inflammatory bowel diseases), any kind of bowel challenge, and even mental health concerns can trace back to an unhealthy gut.

“Your gut health influences your overall health in so many ways, from how you think to how often you get sick, and even your skin’s ability to heal from bruising and scratches,” says Jema.

So, how can you tell if your gut health is poor? Bloating and flatulence – especially if it is a particularly bad odour – are two common indicators, though regular sickness could be a sign that you need to focus on your gut health.

“Our immunity typically weakens as we age,” says Jema. “Considering the fact that 80 per cent of our immune

system is in our gut, it makes sense that improving our gut health will also help us improve our resistance to illness.”

What’s more, erratic behaviour in your mind – like mo-ments of severe anxiousness and worry, dramatic mood swings and brain fog – could indicate erratic behaviour within your gut.

“The most important thing to understand is that as we age, our digestion and metabolism shifts,” says Jema. “We may not want to eat the foods or quantities we used to and may prefer to eat much slower.

“You also want to make sure you’re going to the toilet as often as you eat. Think of it like keeping rubbish in the kitchen too long – the longer food ferments in your stomach, the more it will upset the bacteria and villi.”

In her work, Jema has found that as they get older, a lot of people move away from dense foods, red meat and other ingredients that are hard to digest.

“Don’t keep eating if you’re full, and try eating slower,” says Jema. “As your lifestyle slows down, so too will your metabolism.”

Jemma’s final words of wisdom? Eat as close to nature as you can, reduce your stress and listen to your body – and, above all, follow your gut.

health and wellness GUT FEELINGS

Read all about itKombucha & Co by Felicity Evans, $29.99 Kombucha and other fermented drinks are great for gut health, but they’re expensive to buy and you can’t be sure of the quality. But it’s easy to make your own kombucha (kefir, jun, ginger beer, honey mead and more) when you know how.

The Probiotic Kitchen by Kelli Foster, $35 Optimum gut health without all the supplements: The Probiotic Kitchen takes probiotics beyond pills, and beyond fermenting, into a world of quick, easy and delicious dishes.

Invest in a quality probiotic: “You can add natural probiotics into your diet – like kombucha, yoghurt and fermented foods – but be aware that there are a variety of probiotic strands and not all of them are going to work for you,” says Jema. “In fact, some may imbalance your gut health further.” Your best bet, Jema says, is to take a high-quality, pharmaceutically manufactured probiotic.

Balance your fibre intake: “There are two types of fibre – soluble and insoluble,” says Jema. “Too much of the wrong type can make your digestion too slow or too fast.” Finding the right fibre balance is like baking a cake; you wouldn’t only use wet or dry ingredients, would you? The best fibre comes from nature, so eat a rainbow of fruits and vegetables and a variety of nuts and grains. Also, avoid packaged foods.

Drink clean water: “Our drinking water contains 34 chemicals and toxins, only one of which can be tasted,” says Jema. Water can be a sneaky source of the toxins that are damaging your gut and stomach lining, so consider switching to filtered water if you have persistent gut issues.

Avid golfers will agree that a day on the green is more than just a sport or a hobby – it’s the key to living a happy, healthy life. You may think that sounds extreme, but it turns out they’re not wrong.

WHEN IT COMES to getting your heart rate up, you don’t always have to sweat it out in a cardio session. Finding a low-impact activity that you enjoy, and are happy to do regularly, is a sure-fire way to ensure that you are getting in enough exercise. A few rounds of golf every week could be all you need to keep fit and healthy.

Did you know that you can walk up to seven kilometres playing an 18-hole golf course? Reports state walking can benefit your health in more ways than one – it can reduce your risk of heart disease, improve the fitness of your heart and lungs, help to manage conditions like muscle and joint stiffness, high cholesterol and diabetes, strength-en your bones and even improve your balance. Regular ex-ercise – as we all know – can also help you to keep fit and trim, particularly if you’re ditching the golf cart and rolling

your clubs from hole to hole yourself (rather than carrying them, which can cause stress to your back and shoulders). Plus, being outside and breathing in the fresh air benefits your digestive system, strengthens your immune system and gives you more energy and a sharper mind. And we can’t forget the power of good old vitamin D from the sun for promoting bone growth and strength by helping our bodies to absorb calcium – just ensure you stay protected by wearing sunscreen and a hat when you’re out on the course.

Above all this, golf is a great way to keep in touch with friends – and also to make new ones. So, grab your clubs, hit your local course and enjoy a day spent doing your body some good. It turns out, a golf session is just what the doctor ordered!

All Australians have been moved by the devastation that our country’s recent bushfires have brought – none more so than the residents of Palm Lake Group who are working hard to support bushfire relief.

Concert benefits rural fireys A destructive bushfire at nearby Pechey moved Palm Lake Resort Toowoomba residents to reciprocate the support their region received from their local rural fire service. These wonderful residents organised a Bushfire Appeal Concert raising more than $7000. Palm Lake Group management vowed to match the residents’ efforts dollar for dollar and the resort was able to present a cheque to the Rural Fire Brigade at Cabarlah for $14,505 (pictured above). They will use the funds to deck out their trucks with satellite phones, radio kits and tablets for mapping purposes.

Donations aplenty Residents of Palm Lake Resort Cooroy-Noosa also banded together to support bushfire victims and their local rural fire service by donating a Waeco fridge, more than 800 bottles of water and a water pump (with installation).

Busy hands support wildlife After all these years, Palm Lake Care Deception Bay residents are still giving back to their local community in meaningful ways. The handy men of this beautiful centre took it upon themselves to build and donate bird and mammal boxes to support wildlife displaced by

the bushfires. As this magazine went to press, they had completed 32 boxes for Wild Care Qld and were the only aged caring community supporting the organisation in this way. Bravo boys!

Raffles, sewing, knitting Palm Lake Care Mt Warren Park residents were also deeply moved by the plight of our wildlife in the wake of the fires. Being such a giving community, the residents organised a raffle prize and sold tickets, collecting $550 which was donated to their local rural fire brigade. They have also been busy knitting and sewing joey pouches to send to wildlife carers.

Volunteers shine Palm Lake Resort Willow Lodge had a staff member and resident, who are also dedicated Red Cross volunteers, on the bushfire front line. As well as their volunteer heroes, the resort community itself raised money for bushfire relief through a coordinated effort between the Residents’ Committee, Social Club, Darts Club and Bowls Club. Palm Lake Group Managing Director Scott Elliott also pledged a sizeable donation to the Country Fire Authority on behalf of the Palm Lake Group’s Victorian resorts.

Interest in Palm Lake Care is at an all-time high and we are eagerly building the infrastructure to meet demand, with Beachmere and Toowoomba just months away from opening.

PALM LAKE CARE BEACHMERE is only a few months away from welcoming its first residents as finishing touches are put on this impressive $35 million waterfront aged caring community. It will be one coveted address for the residents who will call this distinctively Hamptons-styled community their home. Offering elegant architecture and interior design, not unlike Palm Lake Resort Beachmere Bay right across the road, it’ll feature 102 private suites, deluxe waterfront suites and couple’s suites, to keep partners together. All this, as well as uninterrupted views of Moreton Bay and direct beach access.

Palm Lake Group consulting interior designer Eleanor Davis is responsible for bringing Palm Lake Care Beachmere’s Hamptons-styled interiors to life. Sophisticated and sumptuous, Eleanor says the Hamptons style will give the residents of this aged caring community the impression of a year-round holiday. Palm Lake Care Beachmere will offer residential, respite and palliative care options. There will be loads of communal areas for dining and lounging (with more intimate nooks for catch-ups with visiting friends and family), a café, hair salon, movie theatre and more. The undercover deck, overlooking the beachfront and Moreton Bay, is already shaping up to be a popular spot for relaxation.

Toowoomba is next in line In previous years, Toowoomba has been a very successful location for Palm Lake Group with our popular over-50s

lifestyle community situated in Cranley. However, by the time October rolls around, there will be a whole new Palm Lake Group community on the range – Palm Lake Care Toowoomba.

Palm Lake Works project manager Mick Munro is on the team putting together this world-class aged caring community right before our eyes. As Mick explains, Palm Lake Care Toowoomba’s designers took full advantage of the expansive site which allows for a sprawling layout featuring six ground-level wings – or ‘neighbourhoods’ as they will be called. One of these neighbourhoods will be dedicated to a special 24-suite secure memory support unit for residents with dementia. Each of the neighbourhoods will then be connected to a main pavilion area. With a soaring 5.5-metre ceiling height, Mick says this reception pavilion will provide a grand and opulent welcome fitting this luxury aged care community.

Each of Palm Lake Care Toowoomba’s high-end neighbour-hoods will offer a more intimate residential experience than other standard aged care facilities, with smaller lounge and dining areas in every neighbourhood, and more hot beverage stations than ever before, to support residents and their visiting family and friends. Residents’ suites will each offer its own ensuite bathroom, as well as an integrated wall of cabinetry featuring large-screen TV,
