Goodbye Noel and Liz – Gwyn Balch

St John Ambulance in the Northern Territory is saying goodbye to Noel and Liz

Talbot who are leaving Alice Springs to live in Kadina, South Australia. Noel has

worked for St John for the past fifteen years as the Sales Consultant and he is

well known throughout Central Australia in communities, small towns and the

cattle stations. He always knew where to go for fresh scones and morning tea.

Both Noel and Liz made such an incredible impact on St John in the Northern

Territory and contributed countless hours volunteering their time for their

community. Last Friday was Noel’s last day and as it was Children’s Week both

Noel and Liz ran the sausage sizzle for all the children. This has been an annual

activity for the past eleven years that St John has been involved with.

Staff, family and friends attended a wonderful dinner at the Elkira Motel and

presented them with a digital photo frame. St John Chairman, Mike Mooney

and CEO, Ross Coburn travelled to Alice Springs to attend a special dinner to

thank both Noel and Liz.

Ross Coburn presented them with a beautiful landscape painting of Central

Australia.

They will be missed by their many friends and colleagues throughout the

Northern Territory.

For those of you who didn’t have the pleasure of knowing Noel this is a little

bit of information.

Noel was employed by the South Australian Railways

for 37 years from 1958 to 1995. After living in

Peterborough for 9 years he moved to Alice Springs

for a promotion with the railways. After 8 years he

left the railways and was employed by St John.

He first joined St John Ambulance in 1980 in South

Australia as a private member. After transferring to

Alice Springs in 1991 he was promoted to Divisional

Superintendent of the Alice Springs Adult Division. He

held several leadership roles and was Territory Officer

Cadets for eight years.

I asked Noel what he liked most about St John:

“I enjoy every aspect of St John – the friendship and

fellowship with members of St John and being in a

position to help my community. My work with cadets

gave me a great sense of satisfaction and pride.”

I then asked him about his most memorable St John

moment:

“In the course of my work and travelling many

thousands of kilometres each year throughout the

Territory I often came upon situations that called on

my first aid skills. A vivid memory is coming across an

accident in a remote area of the Territory where a car

had rolled with the two occupants trapped inside.

With the assistance of a remote area nurse we

worked on them for four hours until the Royal Flying

Doctor arrived.”

Although they will be leaving the NT they will be re-

joining St John in South Australia once they have

settled into their new home.

Thank you Noel and Liz and we hope to see you back

in the NT in the near future. Enjoy your retirement.

Cadet Camp Part 3 – Kimberlee McKay

Our last full day on camp was a busy and exciting one.

We all loaded into the buses early and headed out to

go camel riding. It was to be a warm, windy and dusty

day which made us feel like we were in the Sahara

Desert rather than 20 minutes out of Alice Springs.

The camels all had cool names and one of them was

famous for giving kisses (which Ron just had to check

out!). Some of the Cadets were quite afraid of getting

on a camel, either due to their great height or

because of their bad reputation for spitting and being

nasty. With a little encouragement, and a few false

starts, every cadet successfully rode a camel. It was an

amazing opportunity for all the Cadets as many had

never been away from home before, much less rode a

camel!

Next on the itinerary was a game or two at the

bowling alley for everyone except Kelly and me. We

used this opportunity to visit the one camp member

who was missing-in- action.

Sam Cameron (Tennant Creek Cadet Superintendent)

was finally admitted to the Alice Springs Hospital due

to a nasty infection from a spider bite after soldiering

through the pain for 4 days! We were glad to report

back to the Cadets that she was quickly improving on

the right antibiotic (although she has a deep hole in

her leg from doctors digging out all the nastiness

which the Cadets found fascinating!).

The afternoon was rounded out by Quiz session run

by Amy and me. We challenged teams’ knowledge of

sport, movies, animals and music. The teams’ tables

were stocked with chocolates and Minties to increase

blood flow to their brains! Surprisingly the adult team

won (must have had lots of chocolates and Minties).

After dinner it was time to get costumed for the

theme night/disco - the theme was Superheros and

Villains.

We had some fantastic and creative costumes on the

night including a Boom Gate (that's another story!),

Superman, Cat Woman, the Joker, the Hulk, Astro

Boy, ninja, an ANZAC, St John Volunteer (Geoff) and

Super Mum (Joylene), Everyone had a great time, but

sadly we knew it had to come to an end. Thursday

would be an early start. We had to clean up, get

packed, and for those of us from up the track, pack

the bus and drive to Tennant Creek.

As always it was hard to say goodbye. All the Cadets

made new friends and had fantastic experiences

together. Email addresses and phone numbers were

exchanged, photos taken and promises to see each

other at next years NT Cadet Camp were made. Every

time we drove through a spot with mobile phone

coverage on the way back to Tennant Creek and

Darwin, the Cadets would receive text messages from

the Cadets in Alice Springs wanting to know how our

trip way going. I'm happy to say the trip home was

uneventful (no boom gates were harmed on the

return trip!)

Once again, a big thank you to the fantastic team who

helped make the 2009 NT Cadet Camp and

competitions a great success - Geoff Kain, Joylene

Kain, Ron Owen, Kate Anning, Paul Berry, Kelly Raven,

Michael Hatfield, Sam Cameron, Darren Whatley, Julie

Murray, Matthew Sperling, Amy McKay, Gwyn Balch

and all the Cadets who attended.

Bowling night – Benny Butler

Some photos of the annual Ten Pin Bowls night held at

the Nightcliff Bowls Centre in Darwin.

This is a first long distance report to you from Katherine,

over the phone exclusive with the organiser of the night,

Angie Butler, who states it was all go and everyone

enjoyed themselves. So it’s all lanes and go! go! go! Best

of luck to Alice Springs.

Attending from throughout the Territory were Darwin

Adults and Cadets, Palmerston Adults and Humpty Doo

Adults. For their first time, Mrs and Mrs Rudder, two

great members from Katherine Adults. It was great to

have them with us in Darwin.

Hi again,

Still busy. Lee did the last Mindil Markets with Steve

Bone (Darwin Division) and Henri Raafs (Humpty Doo

Cadets) with the effervescent Hayley from Humpty

Doo cadets. The snake man got bit, got patched up

then on with the show. There were a couple of sore

eyes with fireworks residue falling from the sky.

Greg did the Palmerston BMX with Axl and Aiden as in

the photo. Not much work that night.

Saturday afternoon/night was a long one. We will

have to devise a way to split these into two shifts.

From 1530 to well after midnight is a big ask and I

hope Courtney from Darwin (1st observer shift) was

not discouraged. John Fasham from Darwin Division

got into the swing of things quite quickly and we had

to call for assistance twice with a suspected

LOC/spinal with pain to knees. The other ambulance

was called to a possible airway trauma which ended

up resolving itself. They transported a badly bruised

hip that came in while we were waiting. Restock

meant it was after midnight back to Humpty Doo.

Not much sleep later and Greg was off to Adelaide

River to assist Batchelor Division with the Darwin

Motorcycle Club's Pony Express over some quite

rough country. Not long into the event we were called

to a fractured wrist which was a thrill for new

Batchelor member Anthony.

That was about it. From then on the day got hotter

and dustier. We then became the Batchelor Banditos.

Pictured are Roz Jones Greg and Anthony

Lee did the Jingili BMX later that Sunday with Karina

and Les Anson (Darwin). The new track was very

impressive and Karina took some photos with that

phone that no one can get the pictures out of. A lot

fell off but no serious injuries.

Anzac Heritage week 3 – Benny Butler

It’s been a long week and I am

pleased to say another full

attendance with many and varied

questions as to why? where? and

the night ending with a test.

This week the main topic was

Gallipoli, for the 9 months from

when the troops initially landed

and lived on the peninsula to the

major battles at the Nek and Lone

Pine and finally the evacuation.

Each student received a Poppy and

all are actively asking to attend the

Remembrance Day service as they

now begin to understand the tragedy of it all.

Subject learned so far and topics

covered: How it all started; the

assassination; the treaty of the triple

entente, France Britain and Russia; the

First AIF and Gallipoli; Belgium, France,

Poziers and more; Palestine and the Light

Horse; Simpson Kirkpatrick and his

donkey; how the war ended and why on

the 11th Nov 1918, and the signing or the

Versailles Treaty.

WWII: Germany invades Poland and

more.

That’s it reporting to you from Katherine.
